      I've used a flashlight that kinda worked with smaller batteries than it was designed for, and they ended up leaking. (I don't remember whether I'd put C cells in a flashlight that was intended for D cells or AAA's in a flashlight that was designed for AA's, but I think it was the former.) After an evening of using my flashlight for some night games and noticing it was getting rather warm, I opened it up to see what was going on inside, and a weird dark-colored liquid ran out and onto my fingers. Burned like tomato juice on a cut!

    Swimming parallel to the shore has helped me a lot in the past. I am not the best swimmer, was on vacation in Tunisia in the fall 15 years ago and was swimming in the Mediterranean Sea and suddenly it became quite windy and the current pulled me away and the water temperature was quite cold in the current. At first I swam straight towards the beach without success and panicked. When ic calmed down, I swam / drifted parallel to the coast (fortunately crosswind) and got over a kilometer, two hotels away in shallow water. This helpless feeling of being pulled out by a powerful current and being absolutely powerless still gives me the creeps today.

    2:53 This still only works if you're in range of a cell tower; it just doesn't have to be one served by your carrier. For instance, if you're a T-Mobile user in a town where ATT is the only company with service, your phone will show zero bars, but you'll still be able to call 911 because your phone can connect to the "foreign" company's tower _for 911 calls only._ However, if you go too far out into the mountains, you might not have service from _any_ cell tower, at which point you really can't call 911 without going to a place with service.
    This is also why if you're lost in the wilderness, calling 911 immediately is better than changing your voicemail. I've seen a Facebook post going around claiming that if you're lost in the woods, you should change your voicemail so that if you can't get ahold of anyone before your battery dies, someone will still find out you need help when they call you and get your voicemail. *This advice sounds good, but requires you to be within range of one of your own company's cell towers.* Calling 911 works if you're in range of *any* company's cell tower.

    That 911 thing is a myth...I have tried it on 3 occasions and never had my call go through. ..I had to drive to a place that had service or use a land line.

    • @kitop310
      @kitop310 Рік тому +2

      You’re correct. Now, a cell phone with service turned off or no SIM card WILL connect to 911 (and probably other countries’ emergency lines), but only if in an area with cell service. Cell phones are tiny radios with about 0.8 watts of power +/-, hence the need for a cell tower close by.
      Satellite phones and features like SOS on the new iPhones are a different story, but need fairly unobstructed line-of-sight to the sky.

    • @philipmcniel4908
      @philipmcniel4908 8 місяців тому

      The truth is, you need to have cell service from *any* local cell tower for your call to go through. So if there are no local cell towers at all, you won't be able to call 911, but you should still try to make a cell phone call if you have zero bars just in case there's a "foreign" company with a cell tower in range.
      Example: I live in a town where only two companies have cell service--ATT and US Cellular. If you're a T-Mobile user in our town, your cell phone will show zero bars (since T-Mobile has no local tower), but you'll still be able to call 911 because your T-Mobile phone will connect to the ATT tower _for 911 calls only._ However, if you're way out in the mountains south of town where there are _no_ towers in range, you won't be able to call 911 without driving back to town.
      p.s. This is also why if you're lost in the woods, calling 911 immediately is a better plan than changing your voicemail (I've seen a Facebook post saying you should change your voicemail if you're lost in the woods so that people will know where you are if your phone battery dies and they try to call you). The idea in that Facebook post sounds great, but requires you to have service from *your own company's cell tower.* Calling 911 only requires you to have service from *any* company's cell tower.

    • @halucca22
      @halucca22 Рік тому +1

      If your legs are spaced apart you’ve created the condition for electricity to complete a circuit and fry you ( one foot is closer to the source / more intense charge while the other is further from the source / less intense charge, so electricity moves through the easiest channel to equalize - your body) By keeping your feet close together there isn’t the distance between charges necessary to enable a circuit to form and travel through your body. You can try baby steps but bunny hops keep your feet the same distance from the source of the electric charge and thus reduce the likelihood of a circuit forming.
