I pay cash for groceries, gas, etc… if I receive a $5 bill in change, I put it in a jar and at the end of the year I usually have $300!!!

I stated putting a quarter in a jar everytime I use my washer & dryer. The money adds up. I take that money and go out and buy my laundry products that are on sale and I also use coupons. Right now on sale is buy one laundry detergent and get 2 free.
To me it's a Win Win.

Just a note with the loose change - take it to your bank (if possible) instead of a Coinstar. Coinstar charges a percentage fee, while your bank will not.

Here's an idea you may or may not like, but might be funny to try once:
When people ask you what you want for your birthday, ask for the gift of cash, then put it in your account.
It saves them effort and time and it boosts your savings!

    1. Have a no spend month.
    2. Put reminders of your money goals in front of you.
    3. Increase your automatic savings in small increments.
    4. Save all loose change in a jar.
    5. Get competitive.
    6. Cut something from your budget & see if you miss it.
    7. Do the pantry challenge.
    8. Limit social media use.
Everyone should be doing #3 nowadays. You can automate paying bills, investment allotments, putting money into savings accounts, etc.
#4 - Paying with cash is dumb. I hate having to pull out extra money from an ATM when you can just use a debit card to pay the exact amounts. Even better would be to use a credit card because then you also get extra perks, but you can’t say that if you are a Ramsey Solutions NPC.
8 - That’s always a good idea. Social media is accelerating the downfall of Western society.

I agree. I NEVER use cash. I charge everything even if it is $1. We pay in full and rack up frequent flyer miles. We did home repairs and bought $2000 in Lowe's gift cards. We have used FF miles to go Iceland and Greece.

Rachel, I’m all for adding to savings, but only if everything is paid off. If I am disciplined enough not to spend, that money is going to pay down debt. Maybe I’m looking at this as a person who has a nice savings account and no car and mortgage payment. But I do have debt and that’s my goal😀

  • @katyedwards3935

I need to do a no spend August because I went on vacation last week and spent more than I made making me over budget by enough to have a starter emergency fund and a little more. On top of that, I still owe an additional $1000 to my endodontist for a root canal I'm getting done. This will probably not work cuz I have a charitable donation that automatically comes out of my account every month and I also have insurance payments to make and tithing to my church to do. With the final crown being put on next month, it'll probably be another over budget month. So I'll aim for a no spend September if I can't do it in August.
