The Anglo-Japanese relationship started in the 19th century and Japan based their navy on the British. Japan and Britain had to stop being allies because the UK was scared that the USA wouldn't like their alliance so they dropped their alliance to create the four powers treaty later an alliance including the UK, USA, Japan and France
I thought the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of the early 20th centaury was stopped due to pressure from other British dominions such as Australia and New Zealand etc. You're probably right about some pressure from the US as well. Another similarity to point out is they both had Russia as their common rival in the late 19th centaury. Hence the alliance.
@@ToastieBRRRN Japan has been an ally of many Europeans nations since the 19th century that's why they were in Peking during the boxer insurrection

I find the concept of island mentality really fascinating. My grandma is from an island called Gotland (the biggest island in Sweden) and, at least according to her, some people there are a bit sceptical of mainlanders (especially back in the day, maybe not as much nowadays), and have a strong regional identity. I thought you might find this interesting. Also, it’s a beautiful place, and I can highly recommend anyone to visit Gotland.
I think the imperialism mainly comes down to a few factors: 1) Resource scarcity on islands, especially those farther from the equator. 2) Industrialization, which can also be accelerated by resource scarcity (necessity is the mother of invention basically). 3) Lots of ocean access.
Also, Britain was never gonna successfully invade and occupy France or the HRE/Germany/Spain due to the latter having a massive size and population advantage, meanwhile all those larger countries have the potential to invade/ally with one another to invade Britain should Britain sit back and not intervene - which means for the sake of it's own continued existence, it needed to look elsewhere for the ability to grow in power to keep up with the larger, more powerful nations; thus leading to colonialism. Same goes with Japan, only China was already semi-united, just rarely ever got it's shit together enough to start worrying about other countries.
To put it another way, Islands have a natural moat to protect them from outsiders - but that's a moat without a drawbridge - which means the moment you settle anywhere outside of that moat, your own defence now works for your enemy since you'll have to transport every single soldier, weapon and bit of food via boat which massively increases the logistics issue and leaves them open for naval interception which multiplies the cost of war. Because of that, you need an overwhelming advantage over the people on the other side of the moat for taking that territory to not fuck you over in the long run.
Finally a comment that hits the nail on the Head!

I live on Kyushu, which is the 2nd largest Island of Japan and is significantly poorer than Honshu. While there is definitely a sort of Kyushu identity I never hear any animosity towards people from Tokyo. There's no independence movement and people very much see themselves as Japanese before they see themselves as Kyushuan. Although I think if you went down to Okinawa you might find a more distinct cultural identity since they were originally their own kingdom which got taken over by the Japanese.
Kyushuu (and by extent, hokkaido) has a history of the government doing heavy crackdowns on non japanese cultures (force assimilation, hence why it would leave japanese nationalism more there more than other already japanese places.
Kyushu is the third largest island. Hokkaido is the second largest.
One reason might be that many landlords of Japan were beaten down by the Americans after WWII, so the independency became weaker. I think this is also a reason for the over-populated Tokyo and the low birth rate. However, I see politicians are doing their jobs to improve self-governance in Japan. Things may change years later.

Although there are similarities those two nations are very different.
The british isles failed to fully integrate, the Japanese archipelago did (Celts vs Ainu.)
The British have been much more involved in European politics. Partly because they are three times as close to the mainland than the Japanese are to theirs, the geography of the isles makes them easier to invade as well (flatland vs valleys and mountains.)
The Japanese empire attack on China was very similar to the English war against France actually (hundred years war) the relative population are relatively similar even, Japan didn't really have a European style colonial empire spreading to far continents.
Finally, the British isles have been shaped by large farmlands and grazing lands (in England really) while Japan has been shaped by valley rice farming.
Britain is more similar to France than it is to Japan, similarly, Japan is more similar to Korea than it is to the UK.
Well about the population, Japan was always way more populated than Great Britain (main island), on the other side the British islands have more natural resources than Japan, in fact this was one of the main factors that started industrial revolution in England
(edit) "Rice" countries have an advantage when it comes to population. Historically, It is why their population has been so large. (edit) It is the best domesticated crop of the old world, and the second best overall.
@@90skidcultist It depends on the age distribution of that population. You aren't building anything when 40% of your population is at or near retirement age.

Not as fun to say UK is the same as France, seems stranger that Japan is similar despite it being so far away
Your research is underrated.
Interesting! Being German, I always thought Japan and Germany were very similar. 1. We fought together in WW2 (Guys, I know that‘s very bad and we are all very ashamed of it, but still it‘s fact…)
2. We are both very wealthy and prosporous nations despite our dark past (Germany is wealthier and economically stronger than the UK)
3. We both have the oldest population on earth.
So with our similar older history (WW2) and more recent history (growing very fast economically despite being heavily damaged by the war) I find Germany and Japan to be very similar countries.
Definitely true in some ways yes. Both Germans and Japanese are hard-working and punctual. Plus, both your countries are major manufacturers.
Just a shame you murdered 6 million Jews, apart from that germanys quite nice aha
Probs but island nations always have the most relations and things in common
As a person from an island country (Dominican Republic), I've always thought about this phenomenon yet you're the only one who's put it into words. The Hispanic Caribbean (DR, Cuba, Puerto Rico) has always had a distinct culture from the rest of Latin America, and nowadays, it's these cultures that see the most cultural projection (just look at how big the bachata and reggaeton genres have gotten).
I wonder if people in the outer Hebrides are offended that you kept calling them skye.

We in the U.S. love Japan and U.K. 🇺🇸❤🇯🇵🇬🇧 If course I can't leave out Ireland 🇺🇸❤🇮🇳. Wait, that's India. Hehe 🇺🇸❤🇮🇪. But in the U.S. California acts like an island, cultural export, outsized presence, knows they are better, colonizes all the states nearby with more Californians, eats a lot of fish, was even its own country (for 2 months) and has royalty who marry into royal families (Hollywood). Haha But seriously, that's kind of real. What makes California like a giant island? The massive Alps-like mountains along its east making it hard to traverse in and out? Almost no one lives in the Sierra Nevada of California and those mountains are mostly National or State Parks anyway. Its big cliffy coastline? The treacherous deserts in the south east? The big mountains and volcanoes blocking the north entry into California? Just curious, but it seems like the culture and systems of California resemble England and Japan in some ways. If you asked almost anyone in the U.S. if California should just go ahead and be an island they would seriously agree. Haha
When I learned about Japan, I was wondering the exact same thing. The more I learned about it, the more I was like "this really is just the UK but in a different ocean".
Everything is so similar, with the notable exception being food of course.
