In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about ValuJet Flight 592 was a commercial passenger flight that crashed on May 11, 1996, in the Florida Everglades, killing all 110 people on board. The aircraft involved was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 operated by ValuJet Airlines, a low-cost carrier based in Atlanta, Georgia.
The crash was caused by a fire in the cargo hold, which was initiated by improperly stored and labelled hazardous materials, including oxygen generators. The generators had been improperly packed and labelled by SabreTech, a maintenance contractor hired by ValuJet. The fire quickly spread to the passenger cabin, causing the plane to lose control and crash into the Everglades.
The accident led to a number of changes in airline safety regulations, including stricter rules regarding the transport of hazardous materials, improved training for airline personnel, and increased oversight of maintenance contractors. ValuJet Airlines eventually merged with AirTran Airways in 1997, and the ValuJet name was retired.
