She was my platonic soulmate and much more like a sister than a friend. Max’s storyline this season was incredibly powerful for me, it was like seeing someone that finally understood how I have felt since her death. It hits harder because her and Billy never got to resolve their issues and relationship. Only Eleven got to really see how Billy used to be in his final moments. Losing someone (especially a sibling) in those circumstances would leave so much guilt & regret.
This is the kind of scene that I really miss from most modern shows and movies, and especially the most recent MCU movies. Just letting the actor act with these long lingering shots on the actors. No slick editing, no jump cuts, no fancy effects or green screens or CGI. Just a camera focused on one actor, with a slight zoom in effect and letting the actor actually have an extended take of her actually acting and crushing the subtleties of this emotional scene. And best of all, there's no stupid slapstick or goofy joke at the end to totally undercut the scene.

Because of the guilt I felt. The guilt I couldn’t have done more to save him and this scene and the running up the hill scene really struck a chord with me. How max was running to her friends after being in a depressed and suicidal state. Rest In Peace Billy and Rest In Peace to my brother, Joshua.
She should have gotten an Emmy nomination for this season, even this episode. Max has gone through so much, and in this we get to hear her speak about her guilt and suffering. Amazing performance by Sadie Sink!
I related to this scene so much, losing my brother to suicide, feeling the guilt even though it wasn’t my fault I feel like I could’ve done something if I had known, the depression & grief. Losing a sibling is tough, but losing a sibling you had unresolved issues & Unrealized dreams with is hell… just as did max with billy.
I feel so bad for Max, despite her brother hating her, she still tried, and tried to not have a strained relationship with him. And now that he's dead, they can never fix their bad relationship
From just knowing some people- some older siblings in abusive families take the beatings of the abuser to stop the abuser from hitting the other children and other people like another parent - so once billy died not only was his dad dealing with grief for his son but also was turning the abuse to his wife - all mixed together

Honestly I like to imagine the same thing for them, that if billy had lived he would of been a little more understanding and compassionate after being possessed and she would have appreciated and respected him a little more.... Her character was beautifully written they really showed what trauma and abuse can do to a person she says if he was alive everything would be right again though it never was if he was alive her mom or her would not struggle to get by. Ladies never rely on a man to take care of you or your kids stuff like this happens so much.

To apologize for not saving him like she feels like she should (even though she realistically wouldn't have been able to), and to still extend him grace and hope of a relationship after he abused her and treated her like garbage. This whole scene is just amazing.
I identify a lot with this scene. I lost my 38 year-old sister in 2020. Even though she had a different mother, she was a good one to me and sometimes I got excited when visiting her in Scotland. Ever since she was gone, my father had pictures of her in his working room. I can only think of her and what it was like for her in the past.
I remember watching this scene in June 2022, but watching it now makes me feel so much more emotional as I can kind of relate to how Max feels now. My mum got with a new boyfriend in June 2021 (after breaking up with her old boyfriend who was my step dad for 11 years who I got along with very well) and he wasn't the nicest person I'll admit. He would drink 2-4 bottles of cactus-jacks a day and get drunk to the point where he'd become abusive to my mum and my older brother with autism, among other things he would do to. However, sometimes he would be okay, and him and my mum would have a laugh together, but his mood could change within 2 seconds, he was very unpredictable. This lasted for about 2 and a half years. And then, on the 14th of December 2023, my mum rang me telling me that his mum and dad found him dead in his house, she was heartbroken and sobbing down the phone to me, I didn't know what to do. It didn't feel real. For so long I'd been wishing something would happen to him because I hated seeing him abuse my mum and brother, but now it actually has it doesn't feel right. I feel selfish for wishing that, because of the effect its had on my mum and his family. I've now realised that there's good and bad in everyone, but sometimes you don't realise there's good in certain people until they've gone, and if there wasn't any good in them then them passing away wouldn't leave people feeling so upset by their death. I'm so sorry.
Don’t feel bad for wishing that, it’s a normal reaction to a person that was hurting the people in your life, and while I’m happy that your mom and him had some good moments, he wasn’t good to her or you and your brother, so now all you can do is heal together and try your best to be strong, and it’s ok if you can’t always be strong, you just have to try.

I didn't like Billy. But his death is not justified. I was so emotionally unstable in this episode because I was afraid for Max. I hope she survives in Volume 2.
This season made me like Max. I didn't like her character in the earlier seasons, but this one finally gave her some depth of character rather than just being the archetypal "strong female character" who is better than everyone else and snarky all the time. *Spoilers for the second half of S4* That said, I think that they should have killed Max off at the end of this season, and the Duffer Brother's unwillingness to kill off any established characters is one of this show's greatest weaknesses, because it leads to massive cast bloat and many characters who are just kind of.... there... But not really doing much. Hopefully the next season has a more significant body count, because the stakes keep ramping up but the writers can only stomach killing off new characters every season. It's gotten to the point that any new character that gets introduced I just assume will become fodder at some point, especially if they're likeable like Samwise Gamgee or Eddie.

I saw a comment recently that pointed out that 1st, it’d be unfulfilling writing. Dear Billy was a really great episode that represented Max deciding she actually wants to live (bc we later find out she did contemplate taking her life). To kill her off permanently just 4 episodes later wouldn’t have been a good move, imo. she’s barely even alive anyways lol. She essentially did die and is now a vegetable from being resurrected. She is in a coma and El cannot reach her at all. This provides good motivation for the next season and more push to go into Vecna’s mind to retrieve and save Max. For next season though I think it would make sense to kill off established characters as it being the last season. Everyone thinks it’ll be Steve. I think it’d be interesting if it was Nancy or one of the 4 boys. Like Dustin or Lucas. (Not Will because I truly think he deserves redemption and joy by the end of the series). I also agree this season brought a lot of depth into Max. Sadie is very talented and I’m excited for next season!

I think you missed the whole entire point of the last episode about Maxs real feelings about her brothers death. The guilt was eating up at her that she was actually relieved deep down that he is dead as she said he made her life hell. I don’t think it necessarily bothers that he is dead but the fact she is relieved he is dead also the other parts of her feels guilty because she wanted him dead and now he is dead she may feel her thoughts came true because she thought them.
Billy had a bad upbringing and hella abusive dad and he turned this abuse over Max. They never rewrote this part. Max deep down wanted him to die when he abused her so much. But the thing is, a death is painful but also a powerful event. An event that make all humanity to pity/forget how awful the dead person was when she or his alive.

you clearly don’t know how abuse works, its completely normal for an abuse victim to both love & hate their abuser. It’s not excusing billy’s actions whatsoever & it’s a very realistic portrayal of how complex & nuanced their relationship was. Their relationship wasn’t black & white bc no relationship is?? & deep down billy was a good person, he just never got the help he needed. If he had lived on, he definitely would’ve tried to change as a person even if it took time - it’s very difficult to break the cycle of abuse but you really can’t blame max for wishing him to still be alive so that they can mend their relationship. She SAW him sacrifice himself for el - who he didn’t even know - all because she showed him his happiest memory & he apologised to max while choking on his own blood as he was dying because he was truly sorry. Billy & max both deserved better & they both deserved to heal from their trauma’s. I really don’t understand why people are so against that.

I didn't like Billy. But his death is not justified. I was so emotionally unstable in this episode because I was afraid for Max. I hope she survives in Volume 2.
This season made me like Max. I didn't like her character in the earlier seasons, but this one finally gave her some depth of character rather than just being the archetypal "strong female character" who is better than everyone else and snarky all the time.

That said, I think that they should have killed Max off at the end of this season, and the Duffer Brother's unwillingness to kill off any established characters is one of this show's greatest weaknesses, because it leads to massive cast bloat and many characters who are just kind of.... there... But not really doing much. Hopefully the next season has a more significant body count, because the stakes keep ramping up but the writers can only stomach killing off new characters every season. It's gotten to the point that any new character that gets introduced I just assume will become fodder at some point, especially if they're likeable like Samwise Gamgee or Eddie.
@@SightUnseen555 Although I agree they should kill off an established character I don’t think Max would’ve been the best one at this point. I saw a comment recently that pointed out that 1st, it’d be unfulfilling writing. Dear Billy was a really great episode that represented Max deciding she actually wants to live (bc we later find out she did contemplate taking her life). To kill her off permanently just 4 episodes later wouldn’t have been a good move, imo. she’s barely even alive anyways lol. She essentially did die and is now a vegetable from being resurrected. She is in a coma and El cannot reach her at all. This provides good motivation for the next season and more push to go into Vecna’s mind to retrieve and save Max.
For next season though I think it would make sense to kill off established characters as it being the last season. Everyone thinks it’ll be Steve. I think it’d be interesting if it was Nancy or one of the 4 boys. Like Dustin or Lucas. (Not Will because I truly think he deserves redemption and joy by the end of the series). I also agree this season brought a lot of depth into Max. Sadie is very talented and I’m excited for next season!

I think you missed the whole entire point of the last episode about Maxs real feelings about her brothers death. The guilt was eating up at her that she was actually relieved deep down that he is dead as she said he made her life hell. I don’t think it necessarily bothers that he is dead but the fact she is relieved he is dead also the other parts of her feels guilty because she wanted him dead and now he is dead she may feel her thoughts came true because she thought them.
Billy had a bad upbringing and hella abusive dad and he turned this abuse over Max. They never rewrote this part. Max deep down wanted him to die when he abused her so much. But the thing is, a death is painful but also a powerful event. An event that make all humanity to pity/forget how awful the dead person was when she or his alive.

you clearly don’t know how abuse works, its completely normal for an abuse victim to both love & hate their abuser. It’s not excusing billy’s actions whatsoever & it’s a very realistic portrayal of how complex & nuanced their relationship was. Their relationship wasn’t black & white bc no relationship is?? & deep down billy was a good person, he just never got the help he needed. If he had lived on, he definitely would’ve tried to change as a person even if it took time - it’s very difficult to break the cycle of abuse but you really can’t blame max for wishing him to still be alive so that they can mend their relationship. She SAW him sacrifice himself for el - who he didn’t even know - all because she showed him his happiest memory & he apologised to max while choking on his own blood as he was dying because he was truly sorry. Billy & max both deserved better & they both deserved to heal from their trauma’s. I really don’t understand why people are so against that.
