Now, we have far more non-white, non-judeo-christian diversity in the country. That equation looks different, but it is still possible to solve the problem of friction that that kind of diversity brings. Democracy thrives, indeed is built, on a high friction environment.

I've always heard that until the 90's or so, people treated the president like a celebrity. They loved him and everyone, even the contender, had massive respect for him. Personally, I wasn't alive back then, but we need that back.
We have too much diversity to do something like that. Agreement comes from monogamous societies and the it's not even really a good thing for everyone to love the same person. Society would stagnate

Religously, in the beginning, most immigrants were white Europeans of either Catholic or Protestant faith. Both were broadly welcome in a time when the sting of the brutal religious wars in Europe were still fresh in everyone's minds, and the theocratic monarchies in Europe staunchly detested any who were not religiously homogonous with the regime. Ethnically, the majority of the immigrants were still coming from Europe in through the 20th century, though of course a large number of Africans were brought as slaves. Both are incredibly diverse ethnically and they bring/develop inner and outer race prejudices through the generations. We have always dealt with the melting pot of faith, ethnic heritage, and race-- it was just a different equation in the past. Now, we have far more non-white, non-judeo-christian diversity in the country. That equation looks different, but it is still possible to solve the problem of friction that that kind of diversity brings. Democracy thrives, indeed is built, on a high friction environment.
