I just finished installing my heel toe shifter, mustache bar, and removing my battery (21 minutes, I'm old) to charge it as I have no maintainer, and Harley Davidson online is back ordered for 5 to 12 weeks. The 2019 Slim is 100% put back together, the right way, and ready to ride. A shout out to Matt for you video on loading Harleys, as I said I went 500 miles to get this Slim, and trailered it back. Your video of loading and securing bikes was great. Not only did I look like I knew what I was doing, by using a chock and tying it down like you demonstrated, it was perfect, road those 500 miles just fine. Just wished I would have seen the Transport Mode video before I trailered the bike 500 miles with its flashers blinking, hence the dead battery. All is great took her for a short ride today. Thanks again you guys are great..

Enjoyed every moment of the video👌. It only took me 10 minutes to change the battery on my 2014 Breakout, and I’m not a mechanic. Some people just want to trash Harley.
I've done a few in the last couple of years and timed myself today. I can remove and replace an ’18/’19 Softail battery in less than 10 mins, as can anyone in our workshop. I laughed so hard at this rubbish! 🤣
I think you are on to something, Harley myth busters at Laidlaw Garage. So many people out there giving bad info and posting wrong info. You should start doing more of these videos to show exactly what you just did, prove these idiots wrong. Thanks for exposing the frauds out there, Matt. Not all Harley techs or riders know what they’re talking about all the time. I believe what we saw there was an old school guy just pissed at the general direction HD is taking and decided to cast their negativity back on HD, which in turn made them look very foolish. Matt You and Nick are my to best virtual friends. I've learned so much (straight truth) form your videos. I just bought my first Harley, 2019 Billard Softail slim, based on your reviews. I went 500 miles for this bike the price made the trip worth it. I trailered the bike back to Oregon without knowing about the tow mode, so like you said in the video I watched earlier today, my lights were flashing for 500 miles. After I backed the bike off the trailer and went to start it the battery was dead. Which brings me to this video and a Big thanks to you and Nick for explaining how to access the battery easily.

There are ripoffs out there. It looked like a Florida plate on the bike and some kind of bike gathering. So whoever country is he’s ripping people off or whoever he’s working for is definitely ripping people off . Back in the 80’s I got ripped off by a shop in Chicago where I had my bike in storage for the winter. They did several hundred dollars of work on it that wasn’t needed and that I didn’t ask for . When I went to pick it up and they were charging me $700 more than the storage fee I was irate. They did the bit of we have your bike and your key and your not getting it until you pay . It was crazy ! I spoke with the owner and negotiated a few hundred down and left . The place was out of business a few months later. Apparently someone with deeper pockets than I had most likely sued them out of business.

my first question would be, "Why would anyone need to change the battery on a Harley that's one or two years old?" The original battery on my 09 FXDC lasted 9 years before I decided to replace it (it was still working fine, I just got a bit paranoid with it being 9 years old). I did keep a trickle charger on the battery since new and I think that might have helped it last so long.

I know this is a 4 year old video, but I had a question. Do you have to deal with the alarm system at all? I saw a video on a 2017 FXDLS, which I have, and they removed the main 40 amp fuse to make sure the alarm didn't go off. Just curious.

Good to know! Still, on your classic Harleys you could do all your own maintenance with the toolkit that came with the bike. To get at the battery you didn't need any tools!
I have a different thing....to service the rear brake on an FLTCU you have to remove the battery to reach it properly! That's not to mention the right saddlebag, and sidecover. But it's a touring bike....they had to put everything somewhere! And it would be cool to do MOAR mythbusters!

Could you imagine someone stuck on the side of the road without the tools needed for that process? Plus it wasn't the same model used in Scottys video. But if Matt says it doesn't matter you have to take him at his word because he does do honest reviews and videos. Been watching him a long time. That said. Problem with the video was attacking Scooter Tramp Scotty. He was just filming the mechanic talking about the process. He just put the information out. For all those who do not know Scooter Tramp Scotty. He has put on more miles then anyone you see in this video combined and then some. Probably more than all those combined commenting on this video. So the light you put him in is going to ruffle a lot of peoples feathers because when it comes to being a TRUE Biker and not no weekend warrior or RUB. Scotty is the man. It's actually those type of people Harley-Davidson has chosen to ignore. The blue collar working man and they wonder why their stock is in the tank and sales are nothing like they used to be. Guess it might have something to do with having to second mortgage your house to get a new bike. Or it could be that Harley-Davidson has to compete against itself on the Used Market. If you are going to put information out on the internet, you need to make sure its accurate. I dont know anything about scotty, except that despite being corrected in his comments numerous times he has decided to leave his video up. He could have called a dealer and asked what the book time was. Scotty provided a voice to this guy Country. He deserves to be called out for having done that, because Country was giving out some terrible information attacking the motor company in a totally false manner. Furthermore, Scotty has now said that he simply doesnt care that the video is innacurate in the comment section! I cannot fathom the mindset that leads someone to upload something 100 percent false, be inormed its false, and then simply not care. It's simply irresponsible.

The company long ago made its decision on the clients they want and now their sales are suffering from that decision. Upside with the company wanting to cater to RUBS though is anyone can pick up a nice used bike with no miles on it for dirt cheap. Thus making Harley compete against itself in the used market.

I had to order my 2004 Impact Blue FXSTI at the end of January 2004. I bought both the FSM and the parts catalog to take home to read while waiting for my bike to be built and shipped the following April. Those books are the best investment you can make.

Just changed the battery on my Ducati Monster 1100 ... that's really "a pain in the a..." - no misconception ! On my 2017 Fat Boy S the procedure took me less than 10 Minutes - Thumbs up ! If i need to buy new battery at Harley dealership. How i know i could get fresh this year battery? I dont want to buy battery that have been sitting at dealer storage many years. How i know when it is produced?
Nah the exhaust is low enough it clears. The service manual assumes the bike is stock and the step I skipped was the wheel speed sensor disconnect because I dont have abs. But that's just one clip.
Country might be used to working on bikes from another country everyone's mechanic take your bike to a Harley-Davidson dealership it's worth it thanks for the video Matt and Nick
I watched this video and another. I was able to do it in 40 minutes from start to finish my first time. The biggest challenge was not dropping the screw when connecting the positive terminal. I did this and had to pull the battery back out to fish the screw out. I did have to pull the oil dip stick and cover the opening because the battery kept hitting it when trying to remove and install the battery. I have 2018 Fat Bob by the way.

would it be possible to use my jump starter on the battery in the event im stranded? This battery change may be easy, but it seems like a poor design by HD making it hidden under the monoshock.
Cool video: Thanks! Although you can no longer jump start the new Softails, it’s easy to replace the battery, if you forget to plug in the factory attached Pig-Tail (H-D slang for tender lead) to your Battery Tender.
Good lord, I had no idea my '14 Dyna Street Bob had such an easy access battery. One phillips head screw holds the cover on and you have complete access to the battery underneath. You could pop that thing out in 20 seconds. It's almost impressive how overly complicated the new Softail frame made this job.
When I saw that, I was disappointed because I don’t think Scotty should have posted it. It was a mistake, but the guy shooting the vid, Scotty Kerekes is a cool guy with an interesting story Matt. He’s lived off of his bike only for 20+ years, riding and staying all over the US and Mexico. Love your channel too even though I’m more partial to older machines, but you make it interesting to keep up with what’s going on in the Harley World of new bikes.
Really 30 minutes to remove a battery? That is still way too long. Most bikes I have owned I can pull a battery under 5 minutes. Maintainability is being abandoned. That’s what pisses Harley riders off.
Ok, but how long to change a battery on the live wire? Also according to my buddy country I have to drain my primary to change my seat is this true Matt?
What I think is funny is that on one hand you got Country saying "Don't take it to a Dealer "; and on the other hand Matt Laidlaw saying, "Don't take it to Country "...when in reality you shouldn't take it to either. OK, I'm not a wrench but I have certainly done my share of user maintenance over the years. I removed the battery without much problem, but putting it back in I cannot get the caddy around the back tab so that the whole caddy seats properly. I have struggled for several hours pushing, pulling, wiggling, removing and reinserting the caddy with no avail. The caddy will not travel far enough back. I have a 2018 sport glide. So if there is some tip or trick to getting that caddy to hook back over that back tab. I'd sure appreciate it hearing it. If this guy did it that easily, something sure was different.
Nick and Matt, there are so many untrue Harley myths out there, basically related to Harley haters, that you could spend hours on debunking. Please continue debunking the most damaging ones like this one. I have to admit, this myth is out there in the Facebook softtail sites. Since my Heritage Classic is still quite new, I haven't had a chance to find out if the talk was true so I was under the impression it is difficult to get at the battery.
Right, still more tedious than on twincam models but doable. I just wonder what the actual type of connector is that HD uses to trickle load the battery. I got a few odd loaders lying about - most C-TEC but none of the connectors fit ...is there some sort of converter kit I need or can I get the counterpart of this gender neutral plug to fit my C-TEC's cable with ? Yeah, I certainly did not need to take my battery out of my bike, still cranks instantly. Of course I am a near daily rider.

Russ wernimont has a drop in cartridge coming. They make some awesome stuff. I’d look there first.

If you are going to put information out on the internet, you need to make sure its accurate. I dont know anything about scotty, except that despite being corrected in his comments numerous times he has decided to leave his video up. He could have called a dealer and asked what the book time was.
Scotty provided a voice to this guy Country. He deserves to be called out for having done that, because Country was giving out some terrible information attacking the motor company in a totally false manner.
Furthermore, Scotty has now said that he simply doesnt care that the video is innacurate in the comment section! I cannot fathom the mindset that leads someone to upload something 100 percent false, be inormed its false, and then simply not care. It's simply irresponsible.

Do you expect people to take the argument "The handbook says so?" So if that's your take on Scotty pull up the same bike and show it to them on video without editing. I get it. Your a Cheerleader for Harley Davidson because you work for them. You have the Rah Rah Harley is the best motorcycle in the world. Fact is the location of that battery is a joke. Try changing that battery on the side of a road during real world conditions. Especially for someone who doesn't work on their own stuff. See here is the problem with Harley Davidsons Dealerships. The arrogance is what is killing the company. The dealerships try and put a good face on the company but the facts of the matter is the company is hemorrhaging. Everyone knows it but them. Should have Scotty did a correction or explanation? Sure, but he also might not share your view because the bikes were totally different. He and others could see this video as an attempt to help Harley Save Face for a poor design. If this wasn't Matt's channel that's exactly how I would've seen it. But because I believe Matt has integrity and does honest reviews I don't think that's the case here. One thing you youngsters will learn if you ever get around the older guys. They truly don't give a crap about the company because the company don't give a crap about them. The company long ago made its decision on the clients they want and now their sales are suffering from that decision. Upside with the company wanting to cater to RUBS though is anyone can pick up a nice used bike with no miles on it for dirt cheap. Thus making Harley compete against itself in the used market.

I had to order my 2004 Impact Blue FXSTI at the end of January 2004. I bought both the FSM and the parts catalog to take home to read while waiting for my bike to be built and shipped the following April. Those books are the best investment you can make.

Just changed the battery on my Ducati Monster 1100 ... that's really "a pain in the a..." - no misconception ! On my 2017 Fat Boy S the procedure took me less than 10 Minutes - Thumbs up ! Though i have to admit, that i never had to change a battery (stock HD) on a new motorcycle that early.

Would you have to remove a stock exhaust pipe if it was present? Or at least the slip-ons?
Nah the exhaust is low enough it clears. The service manual assumes the bike is stock and the step I skipped was the wheel speed sensor disconnect because I dont have abs. But that's just one clip.

I watched this video and another. I was able to do it in 40 minutes from start to finish my first time. The biggest challenge was not dropping the screw when connecting the positive terminal. I did this and had to pull the battery back out to fish the screw out. I did have to pull the oil dip stick and cover the opening because the battery kept hitting it when trying to remove and install the battery. I have 2018 Fat Bob by the way.

Good lord, I had no idea my '14 Dyna Street Bob had such an easy access battery. One phillips head screw holds the cover on and you have complete access to the battery underneath. You could pop that thing out in 20 seconds. It's almost impressive how overly complicated the new Softail frame made this job.
When I saw that, I was disappointed because I don’t think Scotty should have posted it. It was a mistake, but the guy shooting the vid, Scotty Kerekes is a cool guy with an interesting story Matt. He’s lived off of his bike only for 20+ years, riding and staying all over the US and Mexico. Love your channel too even though I’m more partial to older machines, but you make it interesting to keep up with what’s going on in the Harley World of new bikes.

Really 30 minutes to remove a battery? That is still way too long. Most bikes I have owned I can pull a battery under 5 minutes. Maintainability is being abandoned. That’s what pisses Harley riders off.

OK, I'm not a wrench but I have certainly done my share of user maintenance over the years. I removed the battery without much problem, but putting it back in I cannot get the caddy around the back tab so that the whole caddy seats properly. I have struggled for several hours pushing, pulling, wiggling, removing and reinserting the caddy with no avail. The caddy will not travel far enough back. I have a 2018 sport glide. So if there is some tip or trick to getting that caddy to hook back over that back tab. I'd sure appreciate it hearing it. If this guy did it that easily, something sure was different.
Nick and Matt, there are so many untrue Harley myths out there, basically related to Harley haters, that you could spend hours on debunking. Please continue debunking the most damaging ones like this one. I have to admit, this myth is out there in the Facebook softtail sites. Since my Heritage Classic is still quite new, I haven't had a chance to find out if the talk was true so I was under the impression it is difficult to get at the battery.

Right, still more tedious than on twincam models but doable. I just wonder what the actual type of connector is that HD uses to trickle load the battery. I got a few odd loaders lying about - most C-TEC but none of the connectors fit ...is there some sort of converter kit I need or can I get the counterpart of this gender neutral plug to fit my C-TEC's cable with ? Thanks in advance !
