      How do they know it hasn’t been touched or tampered with

      You are usually charged for bread if you eat it in countries like Italy, Portugal, Spain and Greece. You can simply just tell the waiter/waitress you don't want it to avoid charges. In Portugal they sometimes bring a plate of bread, butter, olives, etc. If you touch it, you will be charged extra.

    In Italy when you sit at a table in a restaurant you have to pay the so-called "coperto", it happens everywhere in Italy, they didn't scam you. Typically this coperto includes bread or breadsticks, and service in general.

    • @studiocalder818
      @studiocalder818 27 днів тому +3

      And the tablecloth that in Italy you often find even in the simplest places and is always clean!

  • @AutomaticUzi
    @AutomaticUzi Місяць тому +12

    Once again, the extra 2/3 €uros per person, that you find in the bill is called "coperto" is a fee that they charge in every restaurant, pizzeria, trattoria that covers the cost of the service, bread, breadsticks and similar, the use of table cutlery, tablecloth, napkins, glass and usually a bottle of still water from the tap.
    Even if you refuse bread, you still get charged.

    • @studiocalder818
      @studiocalder818 27 днів тому +1

      We do not have a mandatory tip. I personally willingly spend a small fixed amount for a clean tablecloth (when it's there I appreciate it) and good service

  • @marcoreina1525
    @marcoreina1525 Місяць тому +12

    As other viewers have commented you were charged for the "coperto". It is not a scam but the exact charge MUST (it's a law) be mentioned in the menu. Hence, when checking the cost of the pasta, the beer, the wine etc., do check the cost of the "coperto" too. It's unavoidable but you will know upfront, before getting the bill, how much you'll be charged. No surprises at the end!

    As far as I can remember, you get charged 'coperto' in most Italian restaurants. Like a cover charge for cutlery, glassware, napkins, table cloths etc, and the bread is usually included in this. Not all of the restaurants have this, but many do and it's not an optional charge. Some even bill you for tap water!

    • @josievlogsthings
      @josievlogsthings  Місяць тому +6

    Quel costo si chiama coperto e comprende la possibilità di poter mangiare seduto con una vera tovaglia , fazzoletti, posate e bicchieri...veri non di plastica. Questo è il costo della lavanderia. In più ti danno anche il pane o pizza. Tutto nasce da una usanza antica tipica delle trattoria che sono da distinguere dalle Osterie che sono diverse dai Ristoranti e dalle locande.

    • @Thaidesert
      @Thaidesert Місяць тому

      @@TimC883 noo just ask chat gtp: In Italy, it's common to be charged for bread in restaurants, even if you didn’t specifically ask for it. This practice is tied to a couple of cultural and economic factors:
      Coperto (Cover Charge): The "coperto" is a small cover charge per person, which is a standard fee for the use of table settings, utensils, and sometimes the bread itself. This fee is not optional and is typically added to the bill automatically. It is a way to cover the cost of service, including the bread, which is considered part of the meal experience. The coperto is usually modest but can vary depending on the region or type of restaurant. so It might feel like a scam if you're not familiar with Italian dining culture, but it's generally not intended to deceive you-it's just part of how the restaurant industry works in Italy.
