The dynamics of bc and Alberta would be complex to say the least.
Aside from some people in Vancouver which has a shit ton of ontarian immigrants who basically have dumber politics than california the only problem British Columbians have with Alberta are that Albertans really cannot drive for shit and that a loud minority of Albertans are completely rude tourists who get in the way of locals trying to go about their business. My prediction is that pragmatism would win and BC and Alberta would end up being close allies cooperating on economic and military matters.
Most people in BC really dont care about politics either way which is actually our problem because those who do tend to be assholes. The current wave of sort of pseudo eastern liberalism is coming to an end though because their idiotic economic management has made stuff too expensive for locals there are a lot of people who really want something new and the way the NDP locked down locals while allowing near free access for foreigners has completely pissed people off because we are ultimately quite localist/local first people. I just hope we dont go too far in the other direction and develop a reputation for outright hostility to outsiders.

The whole "independence" concept General Knowledge talks about ... like this hasn't happened decades ago. Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of Canada separately from being Queen of the UK. The Commonwealth has evolved over quite some time since the days of the Empire. Multiple sovereign states now share the same monarch.

@@elementallynx493 I agree. Why would anyone want to deny the history of Ontario, or any other province that uses the ensign or the George cross? Everyone should be proud of their history and celebrate it, you are British settlers after all. Ontario was primarily settled by the British, be proud of that and enjoy your flag. I'm British, but I'm proud of Canada as a fully independent country that we helped create, and an ally and friend. Canadian provinces could go down the route of some other ex-British territories around the world and replace their flags with random new flags (that often look like a child created them, in my opinion). It seems to be only small insignificant territories or countries, and ones that are very self conscious, insecure, and anti-British that seem to need to do this. Canada is certainly perceived as a strong independent post colonial nation, and not anti-British. Canada doesn't need to tinker around with it's provincial flags to prove this, like some impoverished sub-Saharan African state. Be proud of what you are. You were British. You're now Canadian. Enjoy your flags with their ensigns and George crosses and your history. We love you as you are, apart from Quebec, of course!

Tensions between Quebec and the western provinces, particularly Alberta, are mainly economic, cultural and political. Indeed, Alberta maintains that the high standard of living of Quebecers depends on equalization, to which it contributes largely for the benefit of Quebec. The fact that the official language of Quebec is French, that it is the only French-speaking province in North America, irritates the rest of the majority English-speaking country, although two official languages, English and French, are on the same footing. of equality thanks to the Official Languages Act of Canada, adopted by the government of Pierre-Elliot Trudeau in 1969. Western Canada considers itself to be governed by Prime Ministers from Quebec - such as Trudeau father and son, Mulroney , Chrétien - tend to favor Quebec, which is largely false. The disputes between Quebec and Ontario lie in the part which the Ontario capital, Toronto, monopolizes economically in relation to Quebec, thanks to the intervention of the federal government, which tends to favor Ontario in many areas. Hydro One, Ontario's state energy company, refuses, for example, to buy clean and cheaper electricity from Hydro-Québec.

The Crown as an entity is such an important part of relations with indigenous peoples that it would be very very tricky to get rid of the Queen.
Pass a bill to replace all reference to the crown with the office of President.. Not all too tricky..
I still find weird that Canada has treaties with their own people. Treaties are between independent nations and are not needed for their own citizens. Either they are Canadians subject to the charter of rights and freedoms and as such have the same rights and duties as everyone else, or they aren't and as such should not be a concern of the Canadian government and taxpayers.

Quebec has had 2 independance referenda in the last 50 years and still has a rather large independance movement.
It's quite funny seeing someone who has no real background with canadian history give his take on it considering just how complex this whole thing is even for Québécois citizens.
Your language division is not quite correct as it only takes into account native speakers. For instance, 94% of Québec speaks french, 50% is french/english bilingual. Around 100% of Ontario speaks english, 10% is bilingual. Part of new brunswick could join up with Québec considering their 33% of french speakers that are currently getting shafted.
Another difference between provinces and territories is that each province has a Lt. Governor to represent the crown, give Royal assent to laws, and ensure that there is an elected government. The territories each have a commissioner, who performs the same functions but is an employee of the federal ministry of indigenous and northern affairs, and represents the federal government, not the crown
3:17 Lloydminster would probably cause a lot of issues for Alberta and Saskatchewan if they were to be independent of each other. The city exists in a weird limbo between the 2 provinces that would only get worse were there to be any issues regarding border policy.
Another interesting development from this scenario would be the independence of First Nations without Canada. There are pockets of land throughout Canada variable in size that are separate jurisdictions. Although very small in size I think many would seek their sovereignty and independence as nations (some are self-governing already) or seek new agreements with the newfound nations. The treaties they have with Canada would no longer exist so then what. Very interesting scenario.
First Nations are happy in Quebec. In fact, wasn't it called the "French and Indian War" because everyone was against the greedy English ?
As a Canadian (living in Québec) I totally agree and also if it ever happened Québec (which has more than half of Canada whole army) would be the most powerful of all of them
@@JollyOldCanuck The secession of a province is legal in Canada. Using the army to prevent that from happening would be illegal, and would likely cause a civil war.
@@JollyOldCanuck Ok, so your point is that because you hate a group of people because they have a different language and culture, the illegal use of state sponsored violence against then doesn't bother you? You have gone along with that mustachioed guy who became infamous somewhere between 1939 and 1945.
As a Canadian I gotta say: great video!
As A Canadian and a New Brunswicker, I totally agree with your findings although every province has people who would disagree.
Oh boy, I'd been waiting for this one! So interesting! Surely an independent Quebec's currency would be called "piastre" 😋
Yes. And it's pronounced "piass".
une piastre is the equivalent of one buck, a slang both meaning dollar so Québec money would very likely be called dollar. It might just be blue instead of green :) although canadian money is very colorful...
It physically hurt to look at BCs flag without the union jack, the top looked empty
I'm from bc and I'm cool with keeping it as it is tbh.
Also, in terms of relations between the provinces, there's a chance Alberta's and BC's relations would break down due to Alberta being a landlocked province and needing to get it's oil to market. The easiest access would be to the Pacific, across BC, and due to the gov't and general population of BC's environmentalism, this would be (and currently is) a real contentious issue and has already led to cold relations between the 2, relatively speaking of course. Chances are Alberta, being an independent entity at this point, would likely strengthen it's relationship with the US though and work out some sort of trade agreement and allow Alberta to get it's product to market.
So Ontario can’t keep the Union Jack but the other flags can keep the Scottish flag and a french symbol. I’m pretty sure the person who made this video is just anti Uk
Agreed. And he didn't recognize the stylized Union Jack that is the NFLD flag.
Agreed, was thinking exactly the same thing! Was like, whats he gonna do with the French and Scottish symbols, but then just proceeds to keep those and remove every union jack in sight..... Canada would still have the jack in its flag today if it wasn't removed by the anti UK leader in the 60s without even a vote...
aren berberian exactly I mean I’m not all pro uk, but I know a anti uk attitude when I see one. Cause no way would he go, oh yeah you can keep the symbols of all these other countries, but not of this specific country
I actually really like the Canadian Red Ensign too it highlights what makes English Canadian different from the US and Quebec which is there association with Britain and the Commonwealth.
Lol and doesn't know shit about the countries history
As a Canadian from Nova Scotia I'm so happy that you've validated my claim that we have the best provincial flag!
But I'll be honest, Québec's is way better for a national flag
With bcs flag you either love it or hate it
Québec far better
@@weeg2141 and I love it
@@triky814 Love from Scotland to Nova Scotia!
The movement is real for a wexit! Alberta and Saskatchewan as their own nation.
An easy two line mnemonic verse (seemingly inspired by the famous Roy G Biv mnemonic) for this is:
Ynn N Princeedward'
Basmoq N Nova'
which are the initials/first parts of:
Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island,
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia.
Note that Ynn (which is pronounced "in") contains all three territories, while Ynn N Princeedward' contains all of what can be called the "northern row" and Basmoq N Nova' contains all of what can be called the southern row.
Note also that each line of the mnemonic follows certain rules that make recalling them correctly rather easy. First, each line is constrained to contain exactly five syllables. The line must stretch from coast to coast. The territories and provinces are represented by their initials unless they are at the end of a line, in which case it is represented by the first few syllables of its full name with spaces removed.
All members of the northern row, except Prince Edward Island, include, in their mainlands, part of the Arctic, defined as north of the sixtieth parallel and all members of the southern row, except Nova Scotia, share a land border with the United States.
This mnemonic is the Canadian part of the well-known (or at least known) "Woc An Tl Ma Flor'" mnemonic for all the states, divisions, and regions of the US, and all the provinces and territories of Canada.
check labrador frontier, there's a ambiguity there...
I want to see jj McCullough do his own take on this
Yeah! It would be great coming from an actual Canadian, who knows about the inner going-ons in Canada.
JJ is anti-Canadian. Every Canadian that doesn't want to become American in his fantasy north-American merger is by his definition Anti-American. He loves poking fun at Canada's inferiority issues with America, but will get very defensive when any Canadian is at all critical of America. He is a hypocrite and a shill columnist for the Washington Post. If you are happy being a Canadian citizen and you don't want to become American, be aware that J.J. is trying to change your mind.
Same
jj is annoying

I was thinking recently about redesigns for the Canadian province and territory flags and from there about how they'd fair on their own. It seems that the British red ensigns were adopted by Manitoba and Ontario as a protest against the Canadian national flag being changed from a red ensign.
I also think there's a dormant border dispute between Quebec and N&L which may reignite if they were independent countries.
what if each russian subdivions became independent? (special 1 hour) sauhauhsauhs
Join his discord and suggest this there if you want to see this in future then he will definitely see it link in the description
But a good idea! I'll do it
I'd hate to see our amazing country break up into 13 different countries. It scares me just thinking about it.
10. Yukon, Northwest Territory and Nunavut cant become a country.
5:41 I mean, they probably would immediately try to become part of the states
Pronounced: NU-fund-Lin also s’sk-CACH-WAN. Love your videos. Oh, and I’ll probably be quizzed at the end of this video. 🙂
N O, it's pronounced New-f'n-Land.
What's with this "dump the union Jack" and the Crown. Don't fix what isn't broken.
Yeah personally I think the union jack on some of our flags makes us more unique removing everything british would be unlikely in most places in Canada
It's the flag of another country, tf is it doing on our flags?
You mean the crown that was responsible for slavery and residential schools?
Only Quebec is like
Heck yeah!!
ROBBEY43 tbh almost no one in quebec wants independence anymore apart of the old heads, like yeah we have a culture of our own but that’s about it. i’m both from quebec and canada and i’m proud of it 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Fairly certain that in the first ten seconds you have Greenland as part of Canada in the map on the left. Denmark may have something to say about that.
2:00)About 1875, BC was considering joining the US.
4:28)They could put the Maple Leaf Flag in the upper left corner
4:53)The NB, PEI and Saskatchewan lion looks like the one on the coat of arms used by Richard I(Plantagenet).
But of trivia but all the Canadian Provinces would retain the monarchy upon independence. This is because of a system known as “Monarchy in the Canadian Provinces”. Just as Canada has a Governor-General to represent the monarch federally, each province has a lieutenant-governor to represent the monarch provincially. This institution would remain upon independence making each newly independent state remain a monarchy, unless the new country (most likely Quebec) were to decide otherwise
Me: *imagining the provinces starting wars due to hockey teams* "peaceful eh?"
This had me rolling on the ground laughing.
It would be the worlds biggest hockey fight. :)
PEl, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick would lose right off the back
There is actually a border dispute between Quebec and Newfoundland, specifically in respect to the land border between Labrador and Northern Quebec, as well as to the maritime border between Quebec and Newfoundland (and it just so happens that there is an oceanic oilfield directly on top of the current border).
Great vid dude. However what happened to the Great Lakes on those maps, they look so bad and a big chunk of Alaska is in BC.
I might actually disagree with you on a need to change Ontario's flag cause it perfectly represents what Ontario is at it's core and what makes it different from the USA is that loyalty to Britain and the Commonwealth plus I actually kind of like the Canadian Red Ensign a bit more then the current maple leaf flag though that doesn't mean I don't like the maple leaf it's just I like the look of the Canadian shield a bit more. Too be fair though this is coming from a American loyalist who was born and still lives in Philadelphia ( Ironic isn't it XC ) so I'm a bit biased here but yeah I really wish I was living in Canada with how rough it's been here in the states lately.)
