  • There’s nothing more beautiful than seeing blankets of waving goldenrod in an open field. And if you didn’t know, the medicinal uses of goldenrod are just as far and wide and beautiful. This herb is one of nature’s greatest herbs that grow freely. A wonderful respiratory herb, UTI herb (urinary tract infection), anti-inflammatory herb, wound healer, and more. Goldenrod tincture is one of the easiest ways to preserve this herb, and I’ll give you a recipe for it further down. I can’t wait to share more about goldenrod with you in this video.
Just a quick note: people often think that goldenrod and ragweed are the same thing. They absolutely aren’t. In fact, most people aren’t allergic to goldenrod, period. While almost everyone is allergic to ragweed!

I was told the "yellow things" all around my new property are bad and give people allergies. You have no idea how excited I was to see this video and realize that those yellow things are actually an abundance of golden rod in my own back yard. Thank you!!

Sounds like you have an opportunity of teaching others the truth about these wonderful “weeds”. ❤ My mother in law swears she’s allergic to goldenrod. I’m thinking it may very well be the ragweed instead.

I have a field covered in Goldenrod. I fill a half gallon mason jar with fresh goldenrod and cover it up to the top of the jar with 80 proof vodka put a lid on it and set it in the pantry. Awesome tincture in 6 weeks.

You brought up a great memory when you mentioned you used goldenrod as part of a table arrangement. Before dinner, my grandma used to take us out into the wilderness and pick plants that we wanted on our dinner table. We would take them to the garage and spray paint them gold and silver and let them dry. Then she would arrange it all to be on display for all the dinner guests. Us grandchildren were so proud at dinner 🥰

I missed my time outdoors here in Okla. I started moving up here from West Texas, so I have been trying to catch up from all my expenses of travel of @485 miles one way and 10 to12 trips. I know goldenrod grows everywhere because I've seen it in fenced fields and up on hills. I plan to get out and shoot pictures and document locations of herbs I find. I do have several field books with colored pictures so I can just look for that color as I drive around. Thanks for the information videos MK

Thank you for your knowledge! Just found goldenrod today in my yard. I loaded one of the plant identification apps. I cut it all back and the transplanted the rootball to an area that won’t get mowed! I also put all the leaves I cut into my dehydrator. I’ll make a tensor in a day or 2. This will be my second herb in my personal apothecary. I found some comfrey last week and did the same.
Looking forward to learning lots more from you!!!! 🙏🏼

I’m SO EXCITED TO MAKE THIS TINCTURE. I was able to harvest a good bit of GOLDEN ROD on the homestead today. There were SO MANY BEES doing work on them that I decided to leave half for them and BECAUSE I LOVE SEEING THEM BLOOMING EVERYWHERE. They always show up right after the SPIDER LILLIES down here in 9A and they are always a sure sign for me that FALL IS NEAR. ☺️ THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS GREAT INFO FOR US NEWBIES THAT ARE SO INTERESTED IN MAKING THIS LIFE STYLE CHANGE. I have been working really hard to clean the man made chemicals out of my body for the last 3 years and IT HAS CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR ME SO PLEASE KEEP SHINING LIGHTS and THANKS AGAIN 💡💡💡 I PRAY MANY BLESSINGS OVER YOUR HOMESTEAD 🙏🙏🙏💚🦋

I took a young family man to a town close by to get help paying for his electric bill. He has three little girls and a son just over 1yo. On the way back I looked closer at a patch of yellow flowers; up close I realized they were goldenrod. This patch was atleast 30' by 60'. I cut enough to fill two jars with tops. I stripped the leaves from the short stems and saved a few tops; I have them in a mess nylon bag drying in my house. I gave the bugs enough time to escape before I poured the juice to the tops and leaves. That was a rewarding trip. I also collected the fluffy seed pods from the plants that were mature next to the pond in the same area. I will plant them some place else. I think I saw Yarrow earlier close to this place. I will check around in the Spring. MK

This herb is beautiful. Were I'm at it's just now starting to bloom it's also very invasive were I'm at. And here in a few weeks I plan on foraging at least enough to get my family though the winter and next summer.

I was curious if you know anything about edible plants absorbing chemicals from near by plants that are not edible that [ some] might have liver failure properties to them? I recently heard about Rooibos tea and a plant that grows often near the tea that causes liver failure. That the rooibos tea plant can and been shown to absorb the liver fail chemicals. It might be all false info but im very interested. I've stopped drinking my Rooibos tea bc of it. I heard ppl on youtube say that soe ppl were hospitalized for liver failure that thankfully cleared up over time of the ppl not consuming the tea grown next to the liver toxic

I made my golden rod tincture. Place it on the self in a dark area. I allowed it to sit longer than 6 weeks. The color is amazing and the liquid is so beneficial. Thanks for the info

I've seen goldenrod all along the roadside too. I didnt pick them because of that. I'll keep looking though. My question is now that the flower are turning or beginning to turn to seed can they still be used and can the seed be harvested for a herb garden in my yard?

I make a tincture with Goldenrod but I also dry a lot of it for herbal infusions.
Besides all the medicinal properties you are also getting a lot of nutrients that you wouldn’t ordinarily get in your diet. Free vitamins and minerals. 😊 And it tastes pretty good. ❤

I do, but I would call it more an infusion, with a longer steeping time.
      About twenty minutes.

Hello Amy, I hope you are well. I have a question. Today I opened my GoldenRod tincture from last fall. Last September I filled it absolutely to the rim, using fresh plant material and 100% grain alcohol diluted with distilled water for a 1:1 ratio, to match a 100 proof alcohol, like a vodka. Nowhere is there any sign of mold, however I detect a slight vinegar, or fermented odor. I can't tell if it's just the Goldenrod, or if it fermented ever-so-slightly? What are your thougts, please? Maybe this is normal? Idk I'm so new at this. Thank you for the videos. You explain everything clearly and at a pace I can follow. Your Grandparent's farm looks dreamy. Kind regards, Lynn

Thank you so much, Amy! I have a field of goldenrod flowering now and more closer to the house that is in bud. You'd be welcome to come and gather all you want! I'm waiting for the ones close to the house to bloom before I collect mine because I don't want to battle chigger bites I'd surely get walking across that field of tall grass. My Vodka is waiting and so are the Boston Round amber bottles. Again, thanks for the valuable information.

When is goldenrod past its' prime for harvesting? I dried some and left it hanging for about a month and some of the flowers look puffy, almost like dandelion. Is it still useful medicinally? I'm wondering if I foraged to late.

My golden rod has been neglected and been drying all fall. It has gotten kind of downy(?) for lack of a better word. They blooms are still yellow but have some white on it kind of similar to a dandelion gone to seed. It is still okay to save for tea?

CAUTION: Identifying species by binomial name is important, you can go on BONAP and look at the county maps to see what species are in your county, at least one species of genus Solidago (goldenrod), Solidago odora (sweet goldenrod, aka anisescented goldenrod, aka fragrant goldenrod) was used by the Cherokee as an Abortifacient (something that induces abortions), but there are no reports that I've seen of any other Solidago species in the US being an Abortifacient, so it is important to identify species. Many people just say "goldenrod" and then give people advise on use, but goldenrod (Solidago) is a genus not a species.
