Hahhahaha. I had to go back and re-watch that video. I was completely off trail then. Several folks got off trail there. I did meet a guy who also took a wrong turn there. He did fall and was pretty beat up. Can’t remember his name, or if he finished the trail, but he was still hiking when I last saw him. He was pretty beat up though.
@@ChuckHowell-Outdoors Oh man I hope he made it too! It's so sad to see how many hikers that put all the time, effort and money in to be taken out by an injury. 😩 I'm currently on day 22 of your thru-hike series 😁 I can't wait to see the videos of you coming through my hometown of Rocksylvania 😆 🐾
Well done! Very detailed and enjoyable. I love when you let us listen to the sounds of birds and the nature around you, though I completely understand the desire to add music. Thanks for taking us along. Hoping and praying that knee settled down!
Sunday, February 25th: Nothing wrong with staying in the shelter. There's always trade-offs. Just be aware when the hiking bubble arrives, norovirus lives in shelters. You got this! Good luck! Mountain Crossing is good place to resupply. Happy Trails! Ross08
Beat video I have seen so far of the descent off Blood. Well done! I can see why people want to do it in dry weather! Thanks for sharing and best of luck to you.
Best wishes Chuck from Jekyll Island, Ga. Great video and comments. The trail will greet you every morning with hope. Emotions will be a roller coaster but that’s part of the challenge. Prayers for a safe journey. “ Everyday is a gift and our only response is gratefulness!” Hike on !
Thank you for the video. It was great. Thank you for taking us along. Enjoying very much. Have followed you since you first started posting. Rest your knee.
I usually pick 3-4 people per year and follow their AT hike. Very much liking your narrative and hiking style/ability/age. Very relatable, very matter of fact and humble. Easy to root for. Stay healthy and go get em!
I did a small section hike for my 65th birthday. I took 4 days to do Springer to Neel Gap and that was slack packing through to Woody. I backpacked SOBO over Blood to Lance because I didn’t want that decline. I still got twisted around a little too going up Blood. So it hasn’t been marked any better in three years 😉. I’m enjoying your hike.
Blood Mountain is a tough one, hiked it many times, my son and I done a night hike there on Thanksgiving several years back, we slepted in the shelter and it was very cold and woke in the morning with snow on us that blew through, lower elevation the next time lol. Great video!!
I love that Blood Mountain shelter. It sure is beautiful up there. I can see why one would get turned around up there with the roughness of the trail. That's a nice little cabin. Enjoy!
Later on when you get to Hot Springs, NC consider a section slack with the Trail Head Lodge. NB 326.5 on FarOut ..can push/pull you all the way to Erwin TN..Walk Safe …Be Well…subscribed and Tracking
Glad you were able to share a cabin. It beats staying in the hostel. Hope you're able to get some warm gloves while you are at Neels Gap. You still might run into some colder weather. Love your videos and glad you had a good day to descend Blood Mtn. Happy Trails...Winkle
Great. Thanks for detailed video. Now I understand why everyone says down from Blood Mountain is worse than up. Congrats on reaching Neel Gap - milestone. Safe hiking.
Hey Chuck, hope your hikes going well, thanks again for your help down from gooch mountain shelter…I’m resting my knee at home will get back on trail in about a week.
Super fantastic!!!!! I’m glad to hear you’re getting back on trail. My videos are a little behind, but just letting you ( and I guess a lot more folks now) that I should be in Franklin in a couple of days
Enjoying your videos. You’ve had great weather to start. I thought coming g down Blood Mountain was much worse than going up. Glad you got a cabin. Looking forward to sharing your journey.
Outside the knee pain is typically the IT band. That can be an overuse issue. Do some stretching of the glutes and the TFL muscle. Some things like this can also be caused by the way a person walks or the shoes. Anyways, something like this needs a day of rest probably. Otherwise it can get worse. Stretching is one of the best things to do or massage the TFL with a foam roller or by hand.
Thanks. I’ve been doing the stretching and using the roller. I’m sure it’s an over use issue. I had to look up the TFL, but I know what is is now. I’ll definitely roll it. I’ve also taped the knee with KT tape. It just needs rest. I’ve slowed down a bit, and plan on taking some town days to rest it.
The Blood Mtn shelter used to have windows, but idiots kept knocking out the glass. Also the Ga Trail club used to maintain the fireplace, but too much use resulted in closing it down (also fear of burning down the oldest structure on trail). No windows panes and heat designed to deter folks from sleeping inside. Oh! I forgot…mice live in the rock walls and come out at night like roaches. I’d rather get a room in town.
Great video. What program are you using to edit your videos? If your feet/legs start bothering you more, look into the Altra Olympus shoes. They have significant more cushioning than the Lone Peaks, but still have the same toe box. They might be a bit less stable though! I don't know that it would make a difference to your knees, but it might. I had to switch to them due to foot pain.
Thanks for the tips! The Lone Peaks are working fine. My feet are feeling good. I’m sure the knee is just from over use, and the only real cure is rest. I’ll be doing that as much as I can. I’m using Power Director to edit my videos. The videos are shot straight from my IPhone 15.
I have been following UA-cam hikers on the AT for the last 6 years at least. I've never seen anyone actually sleep in the blood mountain shelter. When I hike the AT when I'm 62. I'm going to sleep there just because nobody else does.
That would not be fun at all with ice on it!! Lol more like death trap......☠️ glad to see yournot trying to over do it. With trying to get as many miles as you can and just enjoying yourself. Just take your time maine isnt going any where. 😁 wowit only took you 3 days to get to neel gap. Thats very impressive. And thats crazy withall the shoes. Im guessing someone has to cut thos down every year tho. People under estimate the A.T
10:44 was a total jump scare for me 🙈 I thought you were going down 🙀😅 Thankful that you didn't!🙃🙌

Thanks. I think I’ll leave the music out from now on. I don’t even listen to music out here. I just love the sound of the trail

I think the bubble is starting around 1 March but I could be wrong.
Yeah. Trying to stay ahead of the bubble
@@ChuckHowell-Outdoors I was way ahead of it last year. Even with that, in Vermont, NH and Maine things started to get crowded. Stay strong
Beat video I have seen so far of the descent off Blood. Well done! I can see why people want to do it in dry weather! Thanks for sharing and best of luck to you.
Thanks
FYI - The new Sawyer filters come with an extra O-Ring inside the cap 😉
Yep. Found it and found another one in a hiker box, so doing well
Coach Chuck. Taylor Trantham following your journey. Stay safe out there.
Cool! Good to hear from you Taylor!!!!!! Glad to have you along.
I love that trail, the rock stairs, the beautiful terrain. Thank you for all the detail!
Thank you. I plan on doing a video soon that has less of me and more of the trail.
Glad you showed detail of the rocks coming down Blood Mountain and the cabin too. Great video.😊❤
Thanks
Best video I’ve watched coming off blood mountain looked tougher than I would have thought. Thanks for sharing 👍🥾
Appreciate it. Now if I can just keep from getting lost o. The trail😂
Couldn’t have said it better
I’m not gonna stop here…Way to go Chuck! Thanks for sharing…from East Tennessee.
You bet. Glad to have you along
Very nice. Cameras never can show the steepness for some reason. And that's why your knees hurt. Happy safe hiking on.
Very true! Going too fast is part of it, but the trail can be much tougher than the camera can show
Thank you for the video. It was great. Thank you for taking us along. Enjoying very much. Have followed you since you first started posting. Rest your knee.
Awesome! Thank you! Taking a zero today and knee is feeling well
Really appreciative of the footage. Ive watched a lot of these and you have shown views of the trail already that I have never seen before!
Awesome, thank you!

Blood Mountain was beautiful, but several in our small bubble made wrong turns up there.
My knees are hurting just watching you navigate down blood mountain.
Serious pounding on the joints, it feeling much better. Thanks

You take as many breaks as needed. You will find your pace. Just keep going!❤
Thanks
I love that Blood Mountain shelter. It sure is beautiful up there. I can see why one would get turned around up there with the roughness of the trail. That's a nice little cabin. Enjoy!
Easy to get turned around. Many of the hikers around me made a wrong turn in that area
Thanks for the views.
You’re very welcome
Thanks for sharing honest feelings.
Hard to hold them back
Get some rest Chuck! So happy for you. My husband and I are following your journey. I'm hoping to follow in your foot steps one day.
You can do it! Glad to have you along
Thanks for sharing the journey. That one section of downhill rock on the trail looked like it could give somebody some problems. Stay safe
Very true!
Later on when you get to Hot Springs, NC consider a section slack with the Trail Head Lodge. NB 326.5 on FarOut ..can push/pull you all the way to Erwin TN..Walk Safe …Be Well…subscribed and Tracking
I’ll definitely give it consideration
You picked a great time to start!
Got lucky…..and blessed

Great video production! That was flatrock gap at that last trail junction.
Thanks. Kinda hard to keep up with the names of all the gaps
Thanks for sharing Blood Mountain with us!
You earned a good rest in a very nice cabin!
Thanks Richard!!!
Good job, now you’re in Good company with Fresh Ground,he does an excellent job with his ministry 👏👏👏🌿
Absolutely!!!!!
One section of Blood Mountain could be marked a little better it appears.
Glad you made it through there.
Following from Connersville, Indiana
Yeah. Several people took wrong turns in that area
Best video of Blood Mountain, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Chucky , I'm lucky forward to the walk every day keep them coming
Thanks. This must be someone who knows me from way back.
I got off trail at that exact same spot on my section hike last year!!! So easy to do. Be careful and enjoy yourself😊
Thanks. I think a lot of folks do.
@ChuckHowell-Outdoors yeah it was so easy to go down and to the right instead of up and over those rocks it seemed like the natural way to go🙂
Enjoy your nero day!! Congratulations on making it to Neel Gap.
Thanks
Absolutely love your content man. Safe journeys!
Much appreciated!
Love your videos! Keep em coming ❤best wishes for your thru hike 🙏
Thank you! Will do!

Yeah. It’s a shame but not somewhere I wanted to stay
I know I'm going the white way!
Thanks for showing the more difficult descent !
Any time! Kinda wish I’d taken the “ white” way😂
Cheering you on from Maine!
Thanks
Picture perfect day up on Blood!
Absolutely!!!!!!
Where are the white blazes? I would be completely lost.
Sometimes they are spread out a bit
Real nice video - thank you!

Did you have to book that cabin in advance or can one just stroll up and get a place?
It was early season, so I was able to book it on the spot. I suspect they will fill up as the bubble starts
Nice hike and comfy cabin at the end. Audio was a little soft. Hard to hear. Take care.
I’ll pay more attention to the audio from now on. It sounds good from my end, but I can’t carry my computer with me to really check it.
How much is a night in the cabin?
I can’t remember. There were 2 of us. I think it was around $75 each.
I have been following UA-cam hikers on the AT for the last 6 years at least. I've never seen anyone actually sleep in the blood mountain shelter. When I hike the AT when I'm 62. I'm going to sleep there just because nobody else does.
It’s cool looking, but pretty dank and dark
I don't think I have seen of the descent...cool
