Hey, I see you everywhere in the Mr. Robot community! Nice to see ya again :) I agree, I feel like Mr. Robot could have easily had a fifth season, as the fourth season felt rushed in areas. Part of me feels like Esmail had the whole story planned from the start though!
@@Wackaz That show has affected me like no other. And I do like interacting with others that loved it. I agree. Esmail had it all planned out. I think he said as much. It was supposed to be a film but was way too long.
For me it was about to be a completely different thing, until the very end revealed that it had been about the same thing after all, which is genius. They made me think that it was about to go full on sci-fi with parallel dimensions and stuff, when in fact, it remained consistent with what it was about and stayed the course. Hell even Season 1 episode 4 had Fake-world Angela telling Mastermind "You're not Elliot". So good.

The show is so methodical with its cinematography, editing and overall world-building. I love the unpredictability of every episode. Almost every character steals the spotlight.
it was pretty predictable if you ask me. You can expect some mental breakdown in every episode. Also the fact that you know Elliot isn't going to die or face any serious consequence so theres not much tension at all.
@@DaeEss1Drea probably because you didn't pay attention. Elliot's mental issues were obviously caused by something traumatic. The key part is using the little pieces they give to guess what's coming. Also you can tell near the end of the series that white rose is insane and her machine most likely won't work especially when you know the direction sam was taking this show (not sci fi). I think the only twist that got me was I didn't realize elliot was in prison that whole time after he got arrested. But even then I wasn't mind blown. I had known he got arrested already. It was more like "oh so this is his coping mechanism....cool I guess?". There was nothing really significant in hiding the fact he was in prison. Any more twists????

And obviously like almost every show, you know the protagonist it’s not gonna die, but it’s not like Elliot it’s put into danger every 5 minutes and it’s not like other characters don’t die. The ending stayed coherent and Whiterose’s machine didn’t work, it’s that supposed to be a problem? Most of the criticisms you’re giving are not actually bad things IMO

I think Mr Robot scared me without being a horror show, without including gore, its such an honor to explore deep topics on film and the state of mind and mechanics of society. This guy did what blade runner did for scifi, but did it with Fight Club as the source material. The only thing i would have hoped for is a wider audience for this show, by simplifiyng it into 8 episodes per season.
This show was a masterpiece. Watching it at night on my big screen was surreal. Hard to describe the experience, the depth of the characters, and the twists, turns, and unexpected moments. 10/10 easily. And easily my favorite television show (so far).

Also best directing i have ever seen on that last season 4 ep 5 which had no dialogue and that foot chase scene around new york with the tension and the music was phenomenal! Mr robot and battlestar galactica r my 2 fav shows of all time! Good thing esmail is involved in the new galactica series on peacock!
Totally agree! No fight here. Everything was perfect. Acting, script, music, cinematography. It still blows my mind that the majority of people I recommend it to have never heard of it. They hear the name and they just blow me off. I have the series on Blue Ray and rewatch it every week. It is my go to watch while I eat my dinner every night. I am going to have to go back over season four and try to figure out the easter egg!!
Was rewatching Mr robot slowly and I noticed something in a season 2 episode, the one where Joana Wellick meet Elliot at her place, she's staring at him and Mr robot is standing behind him , Elliot starts talking to himself or to mr robot about how it looks as if she's trying to get inside his head, so Mr robot replies it seems like if she can see me, then he walks towards that bodyguard on his way out while Elliot is still in front of her.. she says you're not going anywhere and Mr robot stops. Makes you wonder who of the two is she seeing, which one of them is a hallucination. Many times I think it's opposite of what we believe it was.
Having just finished the series and wanting more, this was a great discovery. Very satisfying with some awesome questions! Thanks for helping pull back the curtain even further on such an amazing show.
4 seasons was the right decision. It makes the series more accessible to those who want a bingeable show without a decade of commitment. Within the context of the story, it makes sense, too. With that said, nothing would bring me more joy than to see a sequel or spinoff series. Mr. Robot is an absolute masterpiece. Of course, if the characters no longer live in your mind, it is still a beautiful and bittersweet ending.
A prequel spin off revolving around Whiterose and the deus group, e corps previous ceo, and Phillip prices rise would be perfect. Set it in early 90s. Esmail could do so much and explore some different themes while retaining mr robots to an extent;even expanding on mr robots.
This is the best depiction of how the mind's internal landscape actually works. It is now called IFS (Internal Family System) and - shockingly - it's not just how Elliot's mind works but everyone else. Also, the dark views about the current state of the world are what we call now the "black pill". The perfect show for me.
I just finished watching this show for the first time yesterday. What luck this interview just came out! I want to see that sci fi project Esmail!! Please don't take it to the grave Mr Robot definitely my favorite show of all time

Mr.Robot is my favourite series. All around excellent. Mr Esmail’s work and that of everyone else (great actors and actresses, soundtrack, editing, etc.) will stand the test of time
I wonder if the Easter egg he is talking about is the blue light that tyrell sees before he dies being the “blue screen of death” it doesn’t really matter to the story but it fits with the show and all that.
Twin Peaks: The Return & Mr. Robot are the 2 most visionary and immersive television shows ever made - (I separate The Return from the OG Twin Peaks series because The Return is infinitely more bold and cinematic, completely divorced from the traditional TV format)
Twin peaks the return is possibly the worst season of a tv show I’ve ever seen. It was definitely unique though no show has ever went out it’s way to be as stupid on purpose like twin peaks the return did.
i remember watching the pilot episode and feeling almost instantly drawn to the Elliott character (the pilot episode was released a short while before the series began and I remember impatiently waiting for the series). The opening scene just draws the viewer in at record pace and there's something about Elliot. I'm not sure how much of that was/is the charisma of Remi Malek or what? I'd be willing to bet that Mr. Robot draws you into the main character/Elliot faster than any series has ever done before to the degree that it does (at the very least it did for me).
One of the many things I particularly enjoyed about Mr. Robot is... I'm the same age as Sam Esmail, which the generation/time period we grew up in can be seen and heard throughout the series. It's a niche' generation that isn't typically represented when movies do call backs to earlier time periods. We were too young to fall into the weird commonly referenced 80's crap. We experienced the inception of video games and computer technology and rode that wave. This show plays music from various movies during this time period as well, which many of the winks came in the form of music from movies during those years... obviously Back to the Future, but there's Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure, Repo Man, etc)... those earlier computer games... you're in a dark room... what do you do? Use key on door, etc. At times the show almost felt as though it was taking place during the late 80's/early 90's except with modern day technology. Elliot's birth year is 1986, however, his experiences/growth is clearly based on someone born 10 years sooner, which is the time period Sam was born in. Obviously he had to age Elliot down, as it makes a lot more sense to have your vigilante hacker being in his late 20's as opposed to his late 30's, but Elliot's experience is shaped from someone born around 1976/77.
I've enjoyed Mr. Robot, Briarpatch, and Homecoming. I now look for Esmail's name. I'm curious to see what he does with Battlestar Galactica. His focus on people instead of technology should make it quite interesting.
Yeah, block shooting while show-running, directing, and writing must be pretty disorienting and overwhelming. What a ridiculous coincidence. We recognize that we as a society have been gradually lacking more real human connection and we have turned to social media as a substitute, and this pandemic comes along and forces us to communicate virtually with each other all the time has really blown that idea out of proportion. I feel that it has really accelerated that process. That timing is crazy. Thinking about the budget definitely does poison the writer’s room. I totally agree.
The second season tends to get better on a rewatch, particularly when it comes to Elliot and the twist (it would be difficult to rank the seasons as I like them all about the same and the show feels continuous as opposed to the seasons standing on their own) . I think it's much more enjoyable knowing the Elliot jail twist as opposed to being in the dark about it, which makes the second season more enjoyable. When you watch it the first time around, something just feels a bit off... like what in the hell is Elliott doing and we start off the season spending a lot of time with Angela and Darlene, which works so much better when we know why we are. Even though I haven't worked it out yet if we are observing parallel versions of certain characters during earlier time frames, but I digress.
Mr. Robot is a thing of beauty. No other show has ever made me feel the things I felt when watching. I saw the humanity in every character. Well, maybe except for Ollie/Lenny; those guys needed a butt-whoopin.
If I had to choose which two shows I would want to see Sam Esmail write and direct an episode for, it would have to be Love + Death & Robots and Black Mirror.
Back here watching it again. Sam let me interview you about Robot bruh I’ll ask you some questions that haven’t already been asked in all your Robot interviews.
Mr Robot got me fucked up... I can't see shit after that! I deleted almost everything I had to watch... and I'm haunted by the score/soundtrack... I got "touch" by Daft Punk and Paul Williams playing in my head right now! What can I watch now?
Is it weird that Sam Esmail looks like I thought he would? I thought this show was a little over the top with the weirdness but it had a stark beauty in terms of the tone and everyone can relate to it.

Now...when you say without including gore.....I'm gonna need you to elaborate on that...
This show was a masterpiece. Watching it at night on my big screen was surreal. Hard to describe the experience, the depth of the characters, and the twists, turns, and unexpected moments. 10/10 easily. And easily my favorite television show (so far).
Mr robot is easily a top three tv show in my opinion
@@raymondsims7042 What do you think of the shows Hannibal and Hunters with Al Pacino if you've seen them?
@@filmmike ahh man I still have to see hannibal!!! Only reason I haven’t is because I heard it was cancelled so I just didn’t even try but I still will with some convincing. I love silence of the lambs. Would you say hannibal is a top tier show? What are some pros about hannibal in you opinion?
@raymondsims7042 Absolutely man! You should definitely watch it! Excellent display of a manipulative mind and how he shrouds himself in fake innocence. I myself am a screenwriter who's also an aspiring director who writes thrillers. They wanted to renew Hannibal for extra seasons but i think it would have been excessive. It ended at the right moment. But yes, without a doubt watch Hannibal! I hope you enjoy.
@@filmmike alright nice nice and I’m adding it to top of the list I’ll definitely be checking it out. 🤝stay gold
Thank you Collider, this was an absolutely fantastic interview, mainly being all thanks to the brilliant interviewer!
Thank you so much for doing this interview. This is everything I ever wanted.
Thank you for setting this up and doing such a long in-depth interview! Mr Robot is my favourite show and want to learn anything I can from Sam Esmail to help with my own projects
Best show of the last decade!
Fight me.
Absolutely! No fight necessary
yup
Better than breaking bad fight me😂
Was rewatching Mr robot slowly and I noticed something in a season 2 episode, the one where Joana Wellick meet Elliot at her place, she's staring at him and Mr robot is standing behind him , Elliot starts talking to himself or to mr robot about how it looks as if she's trying to get inside his head, so Mr robot replies it seems like if she can see me, then he walks towards that bodyguard on his way out while Elliot is still in front of her.. she says you're not going anywhere and Mr robot stops.
Dude deserves an Oscar one day
4 seasons was the right decision.
Please don't take it to the grave
Mr Robot definitely my favorite show of all time
did sam esmail just say that he couldnt direct atlanta or black mirror because hes not good enough? he does not knoe how fucking great he is
Sam's "expensive, original, sci-fi film" - after all these dud Marvel movies now? PLEASE GIVE US THIS!
Great conversation, but no details about the missing Volume 8 Soundtrack. ☹️
Maybe we can still keep the meme going.
Hopefully that unnamed Sci-fi project from Sam will see the light of day, I think sooo many are hungry for more of his work
I just finished binging this. Such a great show!
i coincidentally finished Mr. Robot yesterday. So like good timing, right?
so jealous. what i would give to experience it for the first time again. masterpiece is an overused term, it waters down true masterpieces like mr robot
@@zachscott5420 got received the attention and praise that mr robot deserved
I just finished it an hour ago. My mind is all over the place.
Thank you for delivering the best show on earth! 🙏 and beautiful detail interview ❤️🎥🍿
Mr.Robot is my favourite series. All around excellent. Mr Esmail’s work and that of everyone else (great actors and actresses, soundtrack, editing, etc.) will stand the test of time
I recently re-watched Mr Robot. It's too complex for some people but it's my favourite show of all time!
I wonder if the Easter egg he is talking about is the blue light that tyrell sees before he dies being the “blue screen of death” it doesn’t really matter to the story but it fits with the show and all that.
Twin Peaks: The Return & Mr. Robot are the 2 most visionary and immersive television shows ever made - (I separate The Return from the OG Twin Peaks series because The Return is infinitely more bold and cinematic, completely divorced from the traditional TV format)
at times it got very close yes !
You could possibly add Legion to that list. I think all 3 top todays cinema. Modern art at a whole new level.
This show is an absolute masterpiece & I love it but by the end I was so emotionally drained lol
Ikr
This was so timely with the whole GME stock frenzy.
When are these financers going to realize that Nolan-esque film making is what the people want, not just dumb popcorn films
Thanks, this was a treat!
Oooooh, Esmail doing Black Mirror would be AMAZING!
Elliot Alderson is the Holden Caulfield of the 21st century.
Great questions! Sam is an absolute genius.
I've enjoyed Mr. Robot, Briarpatch, and Homecoming. I now look for Esmail's name. I'm curious to see what he does with Battlestar Galactica. His focus on people instead of technology should make it quite interesting.
Great interview guys
Yeah, block shooting while show-running, directing, and writing must be pretty disorienting and overwhelming.
What a ridiculous coincidence. We recognize that we as a society have been gradually lacking more real human connection and we have turned to social media as a substitute, and this pandemic comes along and forces us to communicate virtually with each other all the time has really blown that idea out of proportion. I feel that it has really accelerated that process. That timing is crazy.
Thinking about the budget definitely does poison the writer’s room. I totally agree.
Mr Robot changed the way I write. More writers need to look at how they had the majority of the main story planned from day one.
I'm wondering if 'Matrix' was also an inspiration
The show that gets better every time you rewatch it.
Fight Club CLEARLY was the main inspiration for Mr. Robot
Awesome show dude.hats off to u..huge fan from kerala...
All i can say is that this guy is a pure genius, as simple as that.
Man kicked it off with harder questions than Krista did on Elliot
This TV show was great! Thank you Sam!👍
I'd like to see Sam Esmail guest-direct an episode of _The Handmaid's Tale_ .
Is the Handmaids tale a great show? The missus and I have thought about watching it.
Great episode!
Everyone in that show had giant eyeballs, lol. Elliot, Angela, Darlene... think about it. More eyeball acreage than any show on tv :D
Now that you mention it yeah that’s true😂😂everyone besides white rose of course
@@raymondsims7042 OHH I SHE WHY U DUDE DARE ROUND EYE! DARK ARMY BERRY HURT! LOL.
I'm so glad that Sam eshmil had this format to expound apond
Not only Mr Robot is genius, but Homecoming is also extremely genius.
Back here watching it again. Sam let me interview you about Robot bruh I’ll ask you some questions that haven’t already been asked in all your Robot interviews.
Bet that Easter egg he's talking about the death of Tyrell when he was looking at the blue screen of death
I love how Mr. Robot is created!
Great interview and now every time I get hacked I think: "Oh! Whiterose again."
can we please give this man some money so he can his opus already!
He's an Evangelion fan nothing he says will ever convince me otherwise.
love this channel
This guy is a genius
This and Legion are both some of the best shows ever created.
This show was amazing, right up there with breaking bad, and better call Saul.
I love every second. Of the show, of the interview.
Mr Robot got me fucked up... I can't see shit after that! I deleted almost everything I had to watch... and I'm haunted by the score/soundtrack... I got "touch" by Daft Punk and Paul Williams playing in my head right now! What can I watch now?
True Detective, first season.
@@diegonicolas7416 very good indeed but I'v already seen it
@Virtual Tech saw that... loved it
great interviewer!
Great show. I my only wish was to know who was the actual Elliot. Maybe someone know
Knows*
we never meet him in the show. We only see his eyes for a second as he's crying, finally waking up.
Is there more to this interview. I feel like it ended rather abruptly!
Sam Esmail aged like a decade since last I saw him .
Am I the only one that feels like the video ended abruptly?
Vera and Tyrell killed off too easily thay had so much to offer. great show 9.5/10
damn sam got gray hair very quickly
Whoaaa new look!
Did he dye his hair or is bro aging
Fuck yes. Thank you!
Now get him to get back on Metropolis!! 😁
Is it weird that Sam Esmail looks like I thought he would? I thought this show was a little over the top with the weirdness but it had a stark beauty in terms of the tone and everyone can relate to it.
Best show of all time, hands down.
