    Freestyle is sporadic, you let the music move you. It’s hard to structure something that’s unrehearsed, you just have to feel it. That’s why Laurent is the GOAT, he does something new and interesting all the time - and his musicality is insane.

    I never thought about it like what you said about the sporadic movement. I kind of appreciate that more because with Laurent at least other than the sigs, it feels like I'm seeing new shit every time he dances, in terms of what you said relating his it to an anime or TV show, its kind of like "Regular show"😂😂😂😂

    How old are the Les Twins now? I'm waiting for these dudes to age out but they just keep on coming up with new shit and doing stuff I've never seen'em do before. What's their secret? When not out battling, they must be on a diet of mushroom tea and sensu beans training with master Roshi 24-7.

    I understand what you mean, but when I envision freestyle or my preference in freestyle is a mix of both concepts you talked about.
    I think of freestyle as literal expression of concepts in a non-verbal language. When its _too_ sporadic it becomes nonsense or gibberish, but if it's too structured it can become rehearsed or predictable.
    I think the in between is to take the conventional structure of the dance and to twist the perspective until it seems like a new concept; or to take the unconventional aspects of movement and abstract ideation and to translate it into something people can either understand or theorize about.
    But sometimes I think dancers do whatever comes to mind, then they to try wrap it off with a move that anyone can agree with. Its kind of like rambling till you actually make a point. Sometimes that rambling has sense and order(like an idea that's not fully fleshed out), but sometimes you're dealing with a Kanye type ramble that's really incoherent and then a random insightful point is made in the midst

    What summarizes my gripes with Loic and Emerick, is pretty much in the title "vs Gamal".
    They improved really well, but I still have a hard time differenciating them apart, and the editor's note proves that.
    They need to stand out more from each other and work on their freestyles because choreo wise they got it downpat.

    Don't let the term Freestyle fool you. Most people think it means the entire dance is improvised, but it really means they can blend different styles together. Example: if the completion is popping then the dancer has to stick to the popping genre with mostly executing popping moves. Same with animation, bboy, etc. Freestyle can incorporate all, or non of those genres, but they are choreographed and rehearsed.
    At least with Les Twins, which is why their musicality is always on point. There are plenty of videos of Les Twins going over what they plan on doing a couple of hours before the competition. Now, they may throw in things here and there to keep the flow going, but those have still been rehearsed and are in their bag of goto, or "signature", moves.

      I definitely think they improvise when they do their workshop freestyles

    Good question! I think it is a matter of taste and preference. Personally, I prefer the spontaneity, the surprise, the change-ups or the resets as you refer to them, and when someone can pick different elements within the music to attack. Sometimes when dancers stay in the pocket, ride the same beat and do predictable moves, I get hella bored. It does not matter how well they execute, I am yawning at times. Dance is emotional and emotions are complex so I think the dancers who tap in have longevity. Now, with Lau in particular I can watch repeatedly and still catch new things because no move, no matter how small, is for nothing.

    For me, when I freestyle I feel that there are two principles/forces that I fight between; those two forces being chaos and control. Often times I feel very "free-formed" (if you will) with my approach to dance. I usually don't have any goals in mind other than to purely express the music emphasizing specific aspects of the dance that will best allow me to do so in said moment of movement expression. With that being said, the quality of movement varies depending upon how intensely I connect with the music (as well as how trained up I am within certain "modes" of movement within my style) - at times being still and easy to look at like a lake, or hard to focus on (due to so much movement) like a raging water fall. I either let go completely and become very "raw" or my movement is very monotone and not thrilling to watch. It's hard for me to find that balance sometimes.

    Just watched the first battle Laurent vs Gamal, and for me Gamal won :S Okay Laurent won maybe with those Hyper-moves, but...I didnt feel the music with those as much as with Gamal. Am I the only one?

    • @TheChilla187
      @TheChilla187 Рік тому +8

      Hard to say.. Loic (Les Gamal) was in it! 💯 But maybe at the end little bit „sloppy“ or with less energy.. He had amazing moves/musicality..
      The only thing maybe with Laurent was, that he came with a quite different energy (battle energy) and hold till the end (musicality also strong).. His signatures felt a little bit off music and just thrown in but yeah I get what you saying haha.
      I mean there is definitely some veteran advantage also with it on these decisions..

    • @makesmartTROYces
      @makesmartTROYces Рік тому +4

      @@TheChilla187 I thought Laurent was off beat too until I watched his round it 4/5 times, before the battle was released, there was a short of his round. His 2 sigs, the spin and the drop were accented the same "drone" sound. The best way I can explain it is that synth (I think that's the instrument) you hear in every single NY drill beat.
      Me personally I think he cooked Loic, Loic was too caught up in attacking beats for me. Laurent had a mix of everything, beat killing, groove, moving around the floor etc.

    • @TheChilla187
      @TheChilla187 Рік тому +3

      @@makesmartTROYces I respect what you trying to say.. The difficulty in some videos is that the audio can not be 100% heard by some one in front of the phone.. the basses are sometimes getting sucked up by the microphone in the battle 🥲
      Maybe I need rewatch the video with some in ears and give it another try..
      But Loic was definitely not that much versatility as Laurent, I give you that!
      So all in all it’s Laurent 💯
