Still Life in C Tier is insane to me, but we all have different tastes.
That said, I hope you do explore the modern albums a bit more. There’s great stuff there!

Heritage has grown on me but I haven't really enjoyed anything after. Nothing against progressive music or lack of harsh vocals. Haken's Fauna blew me away earlier this year and newer porcupine tree has been surprisingly good. Just opeth kind of lost me with their transition. Always respect big Mike and the boys doing whatever music inspires them but guess I always have the old albums to revisit

Wow Still Life C tier? What about the concept behind it? I think it really compliments the musicianship of the album which imo is not boring at all. Still respect your opinion.

See what's funny is I'm actually with him on that same opinion about Still Life. I dunno what it is, to me it's definitely Opeth sounds. It's not bad. It's the first album where I don't think of it as the early Opeth sound like I do with the first 3. IF I had heard it as the first album of theirs or even as their 4th album having only heard the first 3 before hearing it. I could maybe understand the love and praise this album gets. But I didn't ,and sounds like neither did he. That's why I think it doesn't stand out as much for us. I first heard Opeth when I bought Deliverance in a CD store as a random "hey never heard of them , random blind let's give them a shot buy" and the world this band opened up to my 17\18 year old brain was insane. Went from listening to Slipknot, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Mudvayne, Linkin Park..... To Opeth and all the Gothenburg bands to start. Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork, In Flames, hypocrisy, the haunted etc.
But for that reason.... I gotta come in with a "sir I strongly disagree" with saying that Deliverance is bottom tier filler. I love that album. Love every track. Wreath, Deliverance, and By the pain I see in others have all ended up in many different mixes or playlists over the years.
Also just wanna say I hated and could never get into Morningrise until a couple years ago. But recently has climbed to contender for my favorite Opeth album. I'd even say it's better, but doesn't hold that personal meaning that Deliverance has for me.

    • @BarnsOfChris
      @BarnsOfChris 2 роки тому

I would almost agree with him, there are just parts on this album that feel very convoluded and inconsistent to me. I'd not say it's boring but apart from bangers like face of melinda or serenity painted death, songs kinda drag too long and get into too many sections that could have just been cut altogether. I think mikael himself once said it's their most complicated record and I personally agree lol

One of my top 10 all time favorite bands!
    S: Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation
A: Still Life, Ghost Reveries, Sorceress
B: Watershed, My Arms, Your Hearse, In Cauda Venenum
    C: Pale Communion, Morningrise,
    D: Orchid, Heritage
For the sake of diversity I have a C and D tier but every albums on this list is good. Even my least favorite is a 6-7/10.

I think 'Damnation' is an absolutely gorgeous album in entirety. I'd compare it to if Opeth did an Unplugged album release like how impactful Alice in Chains' Unplugged show/album was. Also, the Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree is super apparent. In my opinion, it's A-tier and I feel like it has a positive ranking across the fanbase, but I could be wrong.

Still Life at C tier is pure blasphemy. I personally like the exact tracks in the middle the most. Benighted is my favourite "chill" Opeth song, and Moonlapse Vertigo is one of my fav tracks overall. The intro part where the lead guitar plays and the acoustic guitar comes on underneath everything that is going on is one of my favourite music arrangements of all time

Interesting takes on this particular discography. A (former) fan since the Orchid days, Still Life was the last album I bought in real time. I felt the same about it. But now I find myself getting back into BP and everything after, the prog rock albums growing on me rapidly. Just got myself a ticket to their show very close to my hometown in August. And I really can't wait to see that!

I almost disliked your video for about 2 seconds until I was like “let’s hear your opinion” and yeah, I understand that. A lot of people can’t seem to dig white cluster, moonlapse vertigo, and god heads lament so I get why it wasn’t your favorite. It was the last album to hear by opeth for me and it hit me the hardest and one of my fav of all time. Top 3 fav songs by them are bleak, drapery falls, and Moonlapse vertigo(not gonna hurt myself by trying to rank them). 2 out of three are from BP but I like every song on SL more than funeral portrait so yeah.

I’ve also had a tough go with Still Life. I feel like it was a combination of it being the last classic Opeth album I heard, the fact that it’s held up so high by fans, and even the fact that it’s the predecessor to Blackwater Park, all of these factors left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. I still like it, but I can’t call it one of my favorites either.

It’s one of my S Tiers actually, but I loved hearing your opinion on it regardless. @@Heatwave9000MAYH is nothing like the previous albums. It’s much heavier and they tightened the songwriting by a massive degree. It is much more cohesive than anything before it. It’s the album that effectively defined their signature sound that was continued and expanded upon through Watershed.

"Masters Apprentices" is a certified Opeth Banger and should put "Deliverance" in B Tier at least, maybe even A-Tier. And no love for Damnation hurts every Opeth fan. "Death wispered a lullaby" is even one of the weaker tracks on it, compared with songs like "To rid the disease" and its haunting piano.

Honestly for me the ranking would be:
S tier: pretty much all the old albums with the exception of Orchid and Morningrise
A: Watershed. Love it, just not as much as the others
B: Morningrise, Orchid. Great albums but a bit inconsistent if you ask me.
C: Pale Communion and Sorceress. Love the "chill Opeth", just not really that much into the whole 70s prog music weirdness.
    D. Heritage. I don't think it is bad, it has some really good tracks and I even love the bonus track (face in the snow) but the transition from metal to this type of prog rock was done very abruptly at the time and overall this album is the most inconsistent imo.
Unknown: In cauda veneum. I have listened to this album a few times and felt it is kinda decent. People say this is the best Opeth album since Watershed but honestly haven't listened to it enough times to fully digest it yet

    My list!
    S
    A Blackwater park, sorceress
B My arms your herse, Palce communion, ghost reveries
C Morningrise, Orchid, watershed, heritage, in cauda venenum
    D Still life, deliverance, damnation
Sadly there is no S tier Opeth album in my mind. Blackwater park is close but really only 2 of the songs hit me all the way through. Bleak and Blackwater park. The rest is just not enticing all the way through and in my mind you need more than 2 out of 9 through and through bangers to get an S tier...
Like if the lepper affinity ended when the clean singing began and went straight into bleak i think the Leper affinity would have been one of my alltime fave Opeth tracks, but no it's got 6 minutes more the fucker xD
(Bleak and the title tracks are both one of my favorite songs of all time though no matter the band)
Sorceress is also incredibly close... just some songs are again as blackwater park... to long and too wierd. In my mind Opeth has never been that good at long songs and mostly flops it with just a few diamond corns sifting through from time to time. I know this is an EXTREMELY controversial opinion but Opeth has some of the best riffs but not the song structures to back them up. Is it only me who thinks this?

    • @Pikktryne
      @Pikktryne 2 роки тому

Hahaha! Not really much of a brave opinion i find it quite universal that Opeth rarely manages to put out a release that has the quality of songwriting running all the way through it, though taste is luckily subjective ;) I find Blackwater park to be a great album overall but not in S tier for me, that is reserved for the very best albums i have listened to and for me there is too many parts that just doesn't reach it's full potential. I can say i have listened to every single Opeth album probably at least 5-6 times, most many more so i am well aquinted with their discography. Even Deliverance and Damnation which i find the weakest of the bunch. Still life i would have bumped up if not for the production honestly.
I do agree the Damnation album got some damn good production and i do not listen to it for DM i will tell you that much xD Never been much of a fan of the Death metal in Opeth honestly, always felt it lacked a bit of punch, and i am also mostly a fan of Black and Trash metal, death metal just never really was my thing even though i have listened to tons of it! Though i could not put it CLOSE to any of the great floyd albums, i LOVE pink floyd and is in my mind maybe the best band to ever walk this planet, the musicianship is out if this world but not my favorite band though, though the wall honestly is not one of their absolute best it still is far beyond what is on Damnation. I am not the hugest fan of the depressing mood of Damnation at all, i do endulge in more depressive music to explore as much as i can but if i go for depressing moods i go for black metal most of the time xD
I would love to love the rest of Blackwater Park more, even though i am a HUGE fan of long songs, and for me the long ones are usually the best ;) One thing i have to say is i always had this small of a hate towards BP because honestly it's an album i want to love all the way through but it just looses my attention and i find myself not rewarded for the patience in the song. Like in the title track when the long pause comes it is really worth it everytime to soak in the whole part inbetween and really feel the reward when it hits you. The rest of the album i find has too many bland parts and just comes short of my criteria for S tier, though still a damn good solid A from me at least!
Yeah the first three albums got some slack but there is plenty to love on those ones to, just i think they never quite cleaned up their messy song structuring and often fail to carry themselves all the way through an album.
I almost always listen to music while paying close attention, most often i suck up multiple albums a week all the way from Prog rock to reggea to metalcore to black metal. I am simply a music fan and i do play alot of music myself and i always try to come in to an album and just take it for what it is, especially with bands like Opeth which i have always struggled to get into. I try my best to take these bands which don't hit me at once and try to relisten to the artist until i really get what they are about and understand as much as i can about their music and their sound, feeling and whatever else there is to explore in it! And i never really came to Opeth for the Death metal at all, i love the prog rock side of them the most which i found they took furthest on sorceress. It took me quite a long time to like that album as well as much as i do but there is just so much to dive into and so many awesome parts and changes plus quite intruiging lyrical content and i am a huge fan of it! My favorite probably just edging out Blackwater park by a small inch or two.
I went back and listened to Damnation a couple more times over the last days but it just doesn't quite do it for me, i might bump both damnation and deliverance a tier up to C after i have re-listened to them but that would be it for how high those would go for me.
I am also VERY strict with my rating and take them purely as a personal opinion and not as a subjective rating on how much i would think others like it. And i love my prog rock a bit more playfull and ubeat aswell ;) Like Rush is very much my style (and as mainly a drummer Neil Peart is just a blast of impressive shit through and through for me to listen to always) Sorceress got alot more of that playfull and experimental side and it was great to hear them go and try out alot of new stuff and i think they did it real good. It is quite heavy as well to be honest! Would recomend you giving it a go again aswell!
And i find Opeth to be somewhat of an enigma for me, a band i feel i should love through and through but just can quite not manage to love as much as i want to. My favorite band i can tell is Enslaved though which of course is a mix of mostly prog and black which is much more my style of long songs. Opeth i feel has ten minute longs songs with ten or more different parts and riffs and tons of changes while Enslaved is alot more huge and keeps the music and song structuring alot more streamlined and focues which just makes it pack alot more punch in my ears and i always feel rewarded even when they have the same riff going often for minutes straight. To each to one of their taste i guess!

    13. Sorceress (3/10)
Easily their weakest. Some parts of Chrysalis and Strange Brew are ok. But Mikael basically admitted it was a favor for Nuclear Blast because they insisted on an album in 2016. I want to insult this LP but I respect Opeth too much for their legacy.
    12. Pale Communion (4/10)
Prog Fans seem to like it but for me it sounds overproduced and soulless (That's why I don't like Prog Fans, nobody cares about production). Faith in Other and Cusp of Eternity save this album from being terrible.
    11. In Cauda Venenum (4/10)
Sorceress but with better song writing, not really a fan. Also way too much Deep Purple worship. All Things Will Pass is a good closer and Continuum is solid.
    10. Ghost Reveries (5/10)
Overrated and full of Dream Theater and Tool worship. I like Tool but DT is not good at all. Harlequin Forest and Isolation Years are good songs though but they already did it better before (White Cluster and Hope Leaves come to mind). My biggest gripes are 1.) too much keyboard and 2.) too much staccato riffs and 3.) it's overproduced and too planned-out.
    9. Heritage (6/10)
Slither, Häxprocess, Famine and Folklore are solid the rest I can take or leave.
    8. Watershed (7/10)
Fixed some of the Ghost Reveries issues but you could tell they were running out of ideas. Hessian Peel is the last Opeth song I fully endorse and it does some legwork for the album. Heir Apparent and Burden are solid songs as well. The rest doesn't do it for me.
    7. Blackwater Park (7/10)
Half of the songs (The Leper Affinity, Bleak, Dirge for November and the title track) are among their best work. The rest never really clicked. It's a little too "planned", maybe because of Steven Wilson who I don't really care for.
    6. Deliverance (8/10)
Fixed a lot of the problems I had with Blackwater Park, it's more spontaneous and consistend. The title track is overrated (still good!) but Wreath, A Fair Judgement and Master's Apprentices are highlights of their career.
    5. Damnation (9/10)
The last of the truly great Opeth. Threw their well known songwriting out of the window but retained the darkness. I love it despite not being a fan of King Crimson/Pink Floyd worship (I like the bands but many Proggers succ them off a little too hard). And here I have to give Wilson credit. The mellotron is brilliant on this album. My only critique is that there isn't more of it and that really sums it up.
    4. Morningrise (9/10)
THAT BASS. More folk oriented than usual but that's a good thing. This is the album Agalloch wishes to be. Some moments drag a little but the riffs are just sick (Advent, Nectar, Black Rose Immortal), so why would I care?
    3. Orchid (9/10)
Underrated beyond belief. In Mist She Was Standing, The Twilight is my Robe and The Apostle in Triumph are among their best epics. Forest of October and Under the Weeping Moon are more than solid. Unique mix of Prog/Death/Black/Folk Metal and psychedelic elements.
    2. Still Life (10/10)
The best of both Oldpeth in Midpeth. Has the song writing of Blackwater Park (without the bummers and the overproduction) mixed with the medieval elements of Orchid/Morningrise. Rightful classic. In my Top 20 metal albums.
    1. My Arms, Your Hearse (10/10)
Maybe my favorite metal album ever (Katatonia's Dance of December Souls and Sacramentum's Far Away for the Sun are close) and in my top 3 best experiences with music. I like all songs on here. My favorites are April Ethereal (best Opeth song), The Amen Corner and Karma (extremely underrated) but really everything shines on here. Their song writing mixed with ethereal vibes: I don't think anyone, not even Mikael could replicated this LP even if they tried. I stop writing now because it makes me want to binge this album again and I want to retain its magic.

I'm a Still Lifer😂 for sure but then I've never marked an Opeth album below 8/10 as I've just got into all of them at some point. I'd even say that's why they are the best band in the world.... especially with their recent steps in mind which I also adore. Their journey is for me the strongest progressively of any modern band.🤯😎

Funny how people think that they know how I feel about something more than I do lol. Dunno what to say... different strokes is all.
