I think you missed an important example. Something like -3(2x-5) = -6x+15 which distributes a negative number into a difference. I know they should already know how to multiply negatives but my kid found that particularly challenging.
Except -2(2x-5) is not = -6x+15 it is equal to (-6x+15) an important distinction. They do not exactly equal the same thing. The first is two terms and the second is one term. This can be important when combining operations.
If you are a waiter/waitress and you need to make salads for a table. For example...Each salad requires 1 cup of salad, 3 tomatoes, 2 slices of cucumbers. If you had a table of 4 people and everyone gets a salad I need to know how much ingredients I would need. I use distributive property all the time in the classroom when trying to make sure I have supplies for each student.

Except that it's: 6/2(1+2) =6/2(3) =6/6 =1 Or: 6/2(1+2) =6/(2+4) =6/6 =1 Depends on if you prefer to multiply out the brackets, or figure out the brackets first. Makes no difference. What does make a difference is not using distributive properties and treating 6/2 as an improper fraction. Not sure why, but they seem to teach this wrong in America... To get 9 it would have to be written; (6/2)(1+2) =3(3) =9 Or: (6/2)(1+2) =3(1+2) =3+6 =9 6/2 is not treated as a single term because the 2 is *part of the brackets* - on paper it would be written as “six over two, open bracket, one plus three, close bracket" - the use of the elementary school level symbol '÷' is what makes it complicated. Fraction bars are the global standard, less confusing, and you don't have to copy and paste 'stupid division symbol' from Google. What grade are you in?

very edgy
This really helped. But can someone pls explain how you get 3x to the second power on the last example? I’m confused on where the exponent came from?
x times x = x^2 ; just like 3 times 3 = 3^2
This really Helps!!! thanks!
7 minutes taught me more than 45 minutes of class. `-`
funny
When would this type of math be applied in a real world application? Many times to understand something we need to know the why or the purpose...

Awesome!!!
You lost me at 6 minutes where you suddenly, without warning, out of the blue, insert the 2 as in 3x 2. Where did that squared come from?
Hey everyone! Turns out this is a huge point of contention for people. How would you solve the equation 6÷2(1+2)?
Except that it's:
6/2(1+2)
=6/2(3)
=6/6
=1
Or:
6/2(1+2)
=6/(2+4)
=6/6
=1
Depends on if you prefer to multiply out the brackets, or figure out the brackets first. Makes no difference. What does make a difference is not using distributive properties and treating 6/2 as an improper fraction. Not sure why, but they seem to teach this wrong in America...
To get 9 it would have to be written;
(6/2)(1+2)
=3(3)
=9
Or:
(6/2)(1+2)
=3(1+2)
=3+6
=9
6/2 is not treated as a single term because the 2 is *part of the brackets* - on paper it would be written as “six over two, open bracket, one plus three, close bracket" - the use of the elementary school level symbol '÷' is what makes it complicated. Fraction bars are the global standard, less confusing, and you don't have to copy and paste 'stupid division symbol' from Google.
What grade are you in?
@@drmreg Actually parenthesis come first. 6 / 2(1+2) = 6 / (2+4) = 6 / (6) = 6 /6 = 1
WHAT GRADE ARE YOU IN? I'm an electrical engineer.
6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
