The problem with Rugby in Australia is that most of the talented young rugby players want to play NRL not union. The failure of the Provincial teams and the Wallabies to remain competitive against has seen the support for the game slowly ebb away. The result is none of the major broadcasters want to pay anything like they do for the NRL and the ARL. Without the media exposure younger people will no longer be attracted to the sport and the game will continue on a downward spiral. In my opinion one of the worst things that has happened to Rugby in Australia was the reappointment of Eddie Jones the campaigns that he was in charge of were mismanaged disasters. Even as an NRL supporter I hope that the ARU can fight back and once again become a force in the world game. The Australian public will support an Aussie team in any code when they show that they have a fighting spirit even when they are on a losing streak.... the rubbish they have been dishing out over recent years hasnt won too many fans. I used to drive reguarly from Newcastle down to Sydney to watch both the Super 12 and the Wallabies games nowadays if they were playing in a park across the road I would think twice about going.
Agree with most of what you say, but I don't know that most talented , young players "want " to go to the NRL, it is just that lately it is seen as a more secure option. The biggest problem facing Australian rugby at present is the ARU, they just cannot seem to make the right decisions, from coaching appointments, ( getting Eddie Jones back was possibly the worst ever call) to the whole confected outrage over Issy, to knocking back sponsorship and the list goes on. Now they find themselves up that creek without a boat or paddle. The grass root clubs have been neglected and underfunded for years is it any wonder that young players look elsewhere.
Disagree Australian Rugby lost it all when they signed every game of Super 12 to Fox with zero free to air games. Then diverted all that profit to QLD and NSW, ACT and the Wallabies. They then turned on their own juniors by reducing funding and then when fox ratings were dropping they panicked and bought a whole lot of NRL players again snubbing their noses at their own juniors. That what happens when Accountants run businesses.
New Zealand will be heading the same way ever since South Africa withdrew from Super Rugby this will give the northern hemisphere teams will be powerhouses Ireland and France are looking like future World Cup champions along with South Africa and England. Rugby League is now the more dominant Rugby code in both Australia and New Zealand.
The reason they go to rugby league is that unless you’re an elitist rich boy from a private school there is zero pathways to be a professional rugby player in Australia, so they get to around 15-16 and switch to league as they’re more likely to get a professional career out of it. Rugby Australia turned their nose up at grassroots rugby and instead spent their money on trying to sign “big names” as they thought it would sell tickets instead of trying to actually develop the best young talent and have paid the price for it.
@@andrew_l1900 Exactly right, after the 2 world cup victories they forgot about the juniors/clubs etc and spent all the money on admin, execs and star players, the result less talent coming through.
Next year’s Lions Tour could be brutal.

Aussie rugby decline started with the expansion of teams in the super comp. Earlier Aussie rugby success was built on having 3 powerful states, and expansion diluted the strengths of those teams. With limited player resources, Aussie rugby has always been on a knife’s edge. Even back in the Bob Dwyer heyday they had to draw blood from a stone to be competitive. So expansion would never benefit Aussie rugby, and diluting the strengths of those 3 powerhouse states would turn Australia into a backwater rugby nation.
The problem wasn't the expansion, it was the fact that those new teams only had australian players to work with, while there should be freedom of movement of players between australia and new zealand. If there was more parity, the competition would be way better
Rebels are getting axed next season so majority of players and staff should sign up with the other four teams afterwards.
It would have been wise to also say Joe S "was head coach of the successful Irish team."
I hope to see the Wallabies sort themselves out. They were a great team and country to play against. 🙂

As an NRL fan i decided to give a South Africa Vs Wallabies game a go when they came to Townsville. Went with an open mind. However the game was so slow and confusing that we spent the whole time drinking and chatting away...casually cheering when something did happen. It doesn't have the intensity of Rugby League where if you blink you might miss something.
I did notice a lot of south african fans getting into it tho. Am guessing they have never watched an NRL game.

The problem isn't the game itself, you found it confusing and refused to understand it, prefering to "drinking and chatting away". It's like those people saying NFL is boring without trying to understand it and it's annoying. Have you ever wondered that those South Africans have actually watched an NRL game but still prefer union? you know, because they actually understand it?

They don't have enough talent for 5 super rugby team. They need to reduce it to three. If those teams are stacked with talent and competitive, 80 odd players is more than enough to chose from. They have good coach now, good luck to them

Agreed. 3 super rugby teams will make the Wallabies more competitive. You saw how strong they were in the late 90s and early 2000s because of that. They need to stack there 3 teams with quality players which will bring a winning culture and confidence which will seep into the international game
Rebels folding would help with that, players and staff can be channeled towards the other four teams to sign them up.

What the world needs to understand is the competition for high performance Australian athletes across several football codes. More different codes than any other nation. League and AFL.

RA should have never axed Rennie. I realise hindsight is a wonderful thing, but there was a very high probability he would have got the Wallabies to last year's WC semi-finals. They were on the right track. Saying that, I've got high hopes for Joe Schmidt to turn them around. He did wonders with Ireland as well as the All Blacks recently. He's a top-tier coach. About time RA made a smart decision for once.
Sacking Renie and bringing back Eddie Jones was the most brain dead call in international sports management I can remember. Ten minutes after being sacked by England, RA was falling over itself to get him, discarding Rennie along the way. I was baffled. Good grief, England sacked him for a reason!! It seemed like someone in RA had a Jones fetish with no basis of logic at all. Later events proved this.
New Zealand is not far behind. Rugby globally is on a long term decline in popularity thanks largely to the incompetence the governing body world rugby. It's lost entertainment value as a spectacle thanks to dreadful rules and officials destroying continuity of play. It's a poor shadow of the game it once was. In fact it is complete crap now and unwatchable.
I agree New Zealand isn’t number one anymore South Africa will start dominating the sport along with the Six Nations teams.

ARU have just constantly mismanaged the sport to the extent it's not the best option for young athletes given the competition from other winter sports.
AFL is the 4th most attended sporting league in the world. Good players can make great money playing in front of 30,000 - 50,000 people every game. The NRL (rugby league) is the second most popular sport. Young guys can make good money playing in a very well run tournament that is a higher skill standard than any rugby comp in the world. Media coverage of both sports is high in Australia.
Then there’s the wallabies that travel all over the world losing. A super rugby comp that can’t pay good young players decent money with awful crowd attendances and little media interest.

Its a classist sport, even now only rich white private school kids play union. While NRL makes it a mission to go into indigeneous, pacific and poerer areas to promote the sport. It's sad as an immigrant not having a union team to support Ive also made the switch to rugby league.
Australia has done nothing to develop the game of union and yet for some inane reason it has been given the honour of hosting the next World Cup. Make that make sense. I ask on behalf of South Africa, the country that was supposed to host the 2023 World Cup until the French took it, and that has produced more World Cup winners than any other.

The 1990's and early 2000's was an anomaly for Australian rugby. Rugby union has never been that big here.
2015, winning a shortened Rugby Championship tournament of like 3 games then being ''runners up'' , not bad but definitely not something to consider ''peak''
Wales, Ireland, South Africa, England, France have all leapfrogged the Wallabies and actually made it to rank 1 , Something Australia has never done despite historically being dominant over most of those teams.
Tbf Australia would have been ranked number 1 in the world for a few years if the rankings existed before 2003

I swear there's like a conspiracy against the wallabies within the World Rugby / IRB.
They're pretty much the most penalised team regardless of who they select, they also have 15 world player of the year nominations with 0 wins (more nominations than France (3 wins), Ireland (3 wins), England (1 win) and Wales (1 win) ) and then you mention they also conveniently introduced the world rankings right after Australia stopped being world champs 🤔
7:00pm, mid winter at the Triabunna footy ground on the east coast of Tasmania, under lights, freezing cold, dozens of kids as young as four are gleefully chasing a Sherrin footy around as part of the successful Auskick program. Same thing happening across Australia in league and soccer no doubt. When rugby gets down to that level of cultural relevance it might have a chance. But for now it is a dusty old empire sport, beset by baffling rules, dinning out on 30 year old glories and the occasional win over much weaker opposition. Time to gently walk rugby down to the day room for a cuppa and singalong.
Daft there is so much investment in a game that virtually no other country plays- so you cannot have regular international competitions and a World Cup.
Though it does supply good punters to American football.
As a Brit I think it would be worth mentioning that RU is not even in the top three sports in Australia following Aussie Rules, Cricket and National Rugby League. Rugby Union in Australia has been incredibly successful in the past regardless of what its received in the form of funding. Coaches from down under have been largely responsible for the transformation of northern hemisphere rugby. I think Aussie Rugby is in a temporary slump due to lack of outstanding players. Its not a unique problem, look at England and Wales at the moment. Im pretty sure Aussie Rugby Union will be back with a bang in the not to distant future. Once the Wallabies find their winning ways again the money will come back.

in Academies/Schools and Clubs!

Australian rugby always produces lots of talented players. It will continue to do so. But the ARU has made a lot of bad decisions. Joe Schmidt knows what he is doing though and as an Ireland fan I can say with confidence that he will lift them up off the floor. The RWC was as pathetic as I have ever seen an Aus team and it was Eddie Jones disastrous appointment at the heart of it.

When they sacked Folau because of his religious beliefs, they crossed the line and have not recovered since. They are lucky he wasn't more aggressive in his lawsuit.

Wrong. Folau could not create a defence as he was not quoting scripture. He was intrepretating scripture that had been disowned by his own church.
I have to wonder, though. Do you agree with his statements whereby the rights of Australians should be degraded because they identify as gay?
Further as folau was trying to use the old testament, do you agree that you should be able to sell your sister into slavery and prostitution or kill your mother because she wears garments of different threads etc given that the defence is its the Bible?

I think this video had a lot of potential, but it falls short on a lot of levels.
1- it only starts in the 90s, while ignoring that, until the late 80s, the Wallabies were mediocre. This video makes it look like the Wallabies were on par with the springboks and ABs when they really weren't, they just had a golden generation during the 90s.
2- You can't analyze Australian rugby's downfall by just looking at their national team results, you also have to look at Super Rugby and grassroots. The truth is that Super Rugby doesn't work as a competition, it's pretty much just a training ground for Wallabies and All Blacks, therefore, it's a shit competition that doesn't generate interest in Australia. That lack of interest then reflects on the Wallabies

Melbourne Rebels and ACT Brumbies in administration, poor attendances and tv ratings, very little sponsorship, junior playing numbers declining and general interest in the sport at an all time low. Rugby in Australia really is on its knees
Brumbies have been the mainstay of rugby in Aus for how many years. NSW and QLD dominate at board level. That’s the problem. The only Aus team that kiwis fear are the brumbies so you need to do your homework

Simple really, woke leaders, average players overpaid, can’t complain about the new Cadbury sponsorship. Epitomises the decision makers & player's, a bit hard on the outside but soft inside. Worried for the new coach, hope he’s not too hard on boys. History shows that he won’t last long if upsets too many of them.
This is a very shallow analysis, if you can call it an analysis at all. It's basically a statement of history and nothing more.
The biggest problem that Australian rugby has is participation. That's had been declining since the early 2000s. Australia's competition structure is non existent and doesn't create a spectacle that can compete with AFL or NRL. Moving a 3rd tier sport to pay view is definitely not going to help either. There are some holes in the dyke! At the moment none of the holes are being plugged

Eddie Jones was some train crash.....
His overall record is excellent. But this time with the Wallabies
1) he had a lot less talent, and
2) tried to bring in younger talent too quickly
Part of it was sacking folks because of his personal opinion..cmon it was his own personal opinion..n Australia Rugby took it personally..maybe that s why many folks went the other way..because ur voice does not to be heard🤔

Australia is now a genuine Tier 2 international team. Australia just does not have quality players anymore. Proof? Not one Wallaby would make a World 15…. Or a second World 15…. Or a third World 15…. ARU gave up developing players more than a decade ago. Current Wallabies just don’t have the talent, skills, or knowledge to compete at the highest level. Wallabies and rugby in Australia is broken and cannot be fixed…. Sad. Tragic.
Too much competition from Aussie Rules, NRL and cricket. Plus soccer and basketball have come to prominence in Australia too. It’s sad when you think of were Australia used to be to the position they find themselves now, plus the decline shows no signs of stopping.
