How to Re-Key or Change the Locks in a T1N Sprinter Van Door

  • A member and long-time supporter wanted to replace all the lock tumblers in his old van to avoid breaking a key. This would not have been my recommendation since the tumblers are not usually our troubled area, but he was able to order tumblers matching his V.I.N. so the same keys will work and had the parts in hand before we discussed other options. The process is the same if changing keys, as long as you have keys for old and new tumbler sets.

    Thank you. My vehicle is a 2005 Mercedes Sprinter 313 CDI, its system was different. As preparation, I bought the key hub in this video

    Thanks for the video. I recently had the key cloned and after using it to unlock the side door, the lock mechanism stopped working. The locksmith said the actuator is probably bad. But, I noticed that it felt like the handle itself was broken. Sure enough the plastic around the cylinder spring was broken. So, I just replaced driver side external handle with a dorman. I re-used the existing lock cylinder. Your instructions were spot on. The lock mechanism seems work both with key or fob, and there is a bit more resistance when it's unlocked (as I'm used to feeling) but, the door won't open. I also tried disconnecting/reconnecting battery and lubing door side lock linkage. Other doors still operate as expected.

      Lubrication is key. The motors do get old and tired eventually., but it sounds like your release tab is in front of the catch, when it needs to be behind it. I can sometimes wiggle the hands into place but usually need to drop the latch mechanism, install the handle, then revise the latch back into place.

    FVM you showed the ignition tumbler. Will there be a video installing that one?

      Maybe soon, if I can figure out how to do it right. I haven't hit the books to find out how, but I need to do it soon.

    Where did you order the key and barrels from? I would like new matching lock and keys for my entire van with fobs. Love your channel! Thank you!

      These lock tumblers were bought by a channel viewer and brought to us. He bought them at the dealership he uses for service work and had to 'special order' them. Any dealership CAN do this if they want to. A dealership where you recently bought a new* Sprinter will be far more willing to order parts at reasonable prices. A dealership who doesn't know who you are will likely charge much more for the very same parts or just won't order them for you, pretend they are not available, or just not know they can be ordered.
      Fobs are a different story. We have a video for installing an aftermarket fob that works better, or this guy can make fobs like the originals. 417locksmiths.com/?fbclid=IwAR3_SvDbhE3rddRhgWVee6-FUleD1imEX1fIXlnKX-QBZfnomSs2ZuGyKTY

    Where did you order the keys from, the Dodge dealer ? I checked on a price for a new key fob for my van and they wanted $600 dollars for a new one. There is a video out there showing how to install an after market fob to the center consul door lock for under $50. How much were the new key cylinders?

      Hi Gary, that fob video is one of ours and the cheap fob works a lot better than any originals, except it doesn't flash the parking lights to confirm. These lock tumblers were bought by a channel viewer and brought to us. He bought them at the dealership he uses for service work and had to 'special order' them. Any dealership CAN do this if they want to, but they set the price. Shop around! A dealership where you recently bought a new* Sprinter will be far more willing to order parts at reasonable prices. A dealership who doesn't know who you are will likely charge much more for the very same parts.

    i bought a 1997 vito and this is the only instuction on the web i have found about these handles. i am still fucked because i dont have the key so i dont know how to take the locks out

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  11 місяців тому

      Without the original key we need to drill the plastic to push the release button that lets the tumblers slide out. Finding the button without destroying the plastic can be a challenge.

    Do you think the sprinter van needs added door locks to prevent theft?

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  Рік тому +1

      Depending where you park and when. For my van and my life, I've never felt additional locks would make a difference. No locks stop windows from breaking and my limited experience with vehicle break-ins... there has always been actual breakage! Picking locks and slide hammer lock removers is the stuff movies are made of and might be real to a Maserati owner. These are near 20 year old vans.

      @@FloridaVanMan But can thieves prise the side doors open and back doors, are they easy with a crow bar, or screwdriver?
