Fun fact! but freckle (the crazy gun dude) actually has applied to the police academy before but they rejected him due to his... unhinged nature.
I know it's just a pilot, but I'm really hoping if it ever becomes a real TV series that we see more of the original comic in it. 😭 I was bummed to see the lack of execution of Freckle's slow and very reluctant descent into his hyena cackling. It was a point I think they did need to keep in the pilot to emphasize the contrast between Freckle's unhinged undertones and his innocent nature. I also hope he ends up more baby-faced in the possible series, because he's missing a bit of that naivety and wide-eyed perspective that he had.
unhinged is an understatement my good sir lol! dude sees a Thompson, goes ballistic and loses his shit
@@jercraftman7771 crazy thing is its literally only when he gets a gun in his actual hand, other than that he's a total soft boi. and its refreshing that you can see he definitely knows that hes like this, and actively tries to avoid it by keeping himself away from firearms rather than giving into it all the time
Freckle feels like a copy+paste of me, i mean he's crazy, but very self-kept and socially anxious
What i'm trying to say is all of the characters have personalities, they don't feel 2d, they have depth
oh my days
Fun fact: the reason the whiskey they got was so terrible was because it was from Canada. During prohibition, smuggling alcohol across the Canadian border was the simplest way to get alcohol and made the smugglers rich. However, it reportedly tasted horrible to drink, however it was the easiest to get besides risking it with moonshiners. They reference this when Rocky mentioned “Canadian Whiskey“ and near the end when they all drink it and hate it.
Couldnt they Mix it with something to make it better? Im no Bartender, so i dont get It.
@@anyathepanther7977 Just mixing something with something else does Not automatically mean it will taste better
I love how they are using the actual history of the 1920s instead of just using the aesthetics as a backdrop. I’ll have to see the comics to see what else they included
@@sirboomsalot4902 You won’t be disappointed! I followed it a few years back, and while I don’t remember all of the plot, I was really impressed with how well researched everything was. The main creator not only put a lot of effort into researching key conflicts at the time, but the little details most people would rather generalize for aesthetic or never even think about- like clothing (down to the details, like general silhouettes, ribbon placements, etc) gun models, locations, common languages, etc. Not to mention, the art in the comics (ESPECIALLY as the series progressed) is damn amazing. The language is somewhat period accurate, which can make it tough to understand at times (at least for me), but I’d definitely recommend it.
I looked into it, historically (and in the modern day) Canadian Whiskey (as in actual Whiskey) is infamous for it's low taste, being much more akin to Vodka with a bit of flavoring then American Whiskey (ironically because a lot of the typical Moonshine manufacturing methods/tricks like distilling some high quality flavoring in large batches of low quality product are not only legal but straight up the norm) Canadian Whiskey's main point has always been how cheap it is.
However, other Canadian Alcaholic drinks (especially Rye at this time) were much higher standard and better quality.
The "weird" French is because they are Cajuns.
It's called Louisiana French.
And... "allons!" is just another way of sayin "let's go," so yeah, it doesn't have to be "allons-y". XD
Love Cajun food
@@sunsiboi3095 oh yes, god I miss my time in Louisiana. Despite having the worst time in the Air Force stationed there, Louisiana was the only thing that made it bearable
@@JamesRT1291 By any chance, have you ever heard anything about Fort Polk, Louisiana?
Fun fact - the reason why the cat (Serafine) with the B. A. R. (machine gun) wasn’t using the sights was because back then, bootleggers would saw off the end of the barrel to easily carry it and to hide it in their cars if needed, meaning that they would have no front sight and would need to hip fire the gun, or to just point it in the general direction of who or what they were firing at
I'm also fairly certain that hip-firing the weapon with the sling on while walking forward was actually one of its intended uses. However, its real life counterpart only held 20 round in the magazine, so there was a little too much spraying for historical accuracy. They did really well with the accuracy otherwise.
@@red_phoenix0570 Correct. This principle is literally called "Walking Fire"
@@red_phoenix0570 well, we could always say she had extra mags we never saw.....
Called them whip it guns
@@cobraglatiatorThe problem isn’t reloading the weapon, it’s the weapon capacity.
9:01 thats because they have a Cajun accent and speak creole with is a mix of French and English. They're from Louisiana but if this series gets green lit then youll see their backstory.
Or he can read the webcomic and see their backstory right now. :)
God I hope so. Would also be awesome to see the series get a dvd/blu-ray/streaming release when/if it's complete.
@@lunayoshi don't force people to read something. I prefer to watch the series, if you like comics that's your choice
@@AggressiveSpaghetti reaching for the forcing accusation already. No need to be pressed about a recommendation
You may have missed one extra scene at the end, the mining area they were in was owned by Sable, the same Mr. Sable that was in the bar, he looked a little shocked at the damage Rocky caused to say the least
That was something that went over my head since I didn’t see the sign saying Sable so I didn’t realize the guy at the bar owned the mine.
Little Daisy Cafe is the cover business. Behind a bookshelf, there is a entrance to a cave below where the Lackadaisy Speakeasy is.
And idk if you noticed, but they drove through a sign that said "Sable Stone Quarry." When Wick asked Rocky to elaborate about the dynamite and machinery, Rocky said "Mr. Sable". Wick Sable owned the Stone Quarry lol
Yeah, poor Wick. _Literally_ poor, he probably wont be able to financially recover from this
@@MazdaMiataMX- nah, he's probably ensured, it'll be fiiiiiiiiiiine
@@engineerskalinera at least until 1929
Bruh I realized that like two days ago and went: OH NO- OH FUCK WICK- 😭 he’s not going to financially recover from this for a while.
Jokes on all of y’all webcomic non-readers, I knew this fact!
i feel the need to mention that the story and characters are based on a comic that are like almost 2 decades old already. this short film was getting started at 2020 (yep, it took 3 YEARS of production), and all the characters have been around during 2006. im just saying, the concept of this is most likely NOT AT ALL inspired by helluva boss or hazbin hotel. theyre not new, AT ALL. Theyve been around for 17 YEARS.
So many people don’t realize this. If anything, the Lackadaisy comic and Tracy may have inspired those of helluva boss and so on. It’s the best damn web comic out
@@bromobiler89 alas, great stuff always go underappreciated. the comic is extremely underrated. Im tired of seeing people in the pilot video saying this looks like hb or hh or is inspired by it. its kinda getting frustrating.
@@canoistercat I agree 100%. I’ve read thru some comments for reaction videos just to see what how people feel hoping this gets picked up and turns into something more and I’m just baffled at the amount of people comparing it to helluva boss and hazbin hotel and saying how the characters are so similar. Everyone needs to read the comic to appreciate this pilot to its full. From Rocky saying spaghetti arms to freckles going unhinged and not knowing the back story. Theirs so much potential to this within all of Tracy’s comics it’s wild and could go on for a while. I pray it does haha
it doesn't look like Hazbin Hotel, everyone says that just bc Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss are most popular yt animated series, so calm ye nuts. And there is nothing bad with comparing them, they are all awesome
@@AggressiveSpaghettiPeople are only troubled by this because people are saying Lackadaisy is inspired by other works while in actuality it is older than the other projects, idk why they are this way, but to each their own I guess.
the rough linework being exposed at times is very reminiscent of old school photocopy era disney, like 101 dalmations, robin hood or jungle book
So...Disney from the mid-to-late 1950s to when Walt Disney died in 1966?
@@canaisyoung3601 they technically used the animation style right up to the mid 80s, o think oliver and company was the last to do it, basically instead of hand inking the roughs they photocopied them onto clear cells, and then painted them, this left the lines sketchy and the framework would bleed through from time to time
14:13 She’s actually completely cut the front sight off. This configuration short-barreled configuration wasn’t actually that uncommon among the outlaws lucky enough to have a BAR, and this “waking fire” tactic was actually used by the US Army when they first started using the BAR since no one really knew what to use light machine guns for yet.
About old car engine: it worked roughly the same way as today (minus all the improvements), but didn't have a battery which would start the car. A crank would charge the spring, which with the turn of a key would start the engine. It worked somewhat like gramophone.
Also the 1920's was right about the time when electric starters were becoming more popular on commercial cars, though for a few years it was not uncommon to find it with the manual crank system too as backup.
19:00 She’s actually reading about the death of Isadora Duncan, who died after her scarf got wrapped around the axle of her car in September, 1927.
Whoa, that's wild!
This comment made me realize what those characters in a series of unfortunate events might have been based off of.
I remember hearing a story about that and knew that’s what she was reading but I forgot the name
Lackadaisy is a word that technically doesn't exist anymore, in fact being considered an archaic interjection (something you say in surprise or sorrow, like people nowadays saying, "Oh No!" or "Damn!"). An older variant is the more medieval sounding "Lackaday" which, much like Lackadaisy, was used as a term to express Sorrow or Regret.
The only trace of it left is in the modern adjective "Lackadaisical," which means "Lacking Enthusiasm or Determination; Careless; Lazy; Indifferent."
Which is a term often used to describe slackers, goldbrickers, layabouts, bums, bored teenagers and young adults, or generally anybody who can't be bothered to care, who treat everything either like some kind of game or an annoying chore they don't wanna do, so they either procrastinate and do other things while waiting for the problem to go away, or they try to trick others into doing their work for them.
Hope this helps.
I find it funny that the VA for Rocky ( who is from the 20s and in a gang) is the same VA for Angel Dust from Hazbin Hotel (also from the 20s and was in a gang) lol
The 1920's is right around the time when electric starters were becoming popular additions to commercial cars, but most still had a manual crank as backup just in case.
Yeah and the 1rst part of Fantastic Beasts (a story set in Harry Potter universe) take place in New York in that era. It is marvelous. Don't watch the rest of the series it is boring
I'm genuinely interested to see where this series takes us, never read the comics before either (might actually have to do that
Do it! The series doesn’t follow the exact story of the comics, and the comics help familiarize you with the characters. I binged it all after watching the pilot yesterday and it’s really good, I recommend it
If you want to own the comics physically, volume 1 is supposedly coming out on July 4th.
definitely check the comics out. The art is wonderful and and the story is funny, gritty, dramatic...good good stuff. Fact that they're all a bunch of cute cats makes it so much better tbh
@@zayamoone is the full series confirmed to not follow the same plot as the comics? Or is it just the fact that this is a pilot for the purpose of being picked up as a proper series the reason why it’s a new story?
@@ma.2089 I’m really not sure, but I’m assuming the series will be a sort of abridged version of the comic’s story?
"Allons-y" is "Let's go." "Allons" is "Go." =^.^= Nico and Serafina are Cajun, from Louisiana or thereabouts. They're a people of French ancestry with a very unique dialect. Also, the Little Daisy Cafe is the cover business. The Lackadaisy is the speakeasy underneath it.
Rocky has what I like to call “crackhead energy”
The two people with Mordecai are from Louisiana bayou, hence the heavy French/Cajun accents.
Seeing the lines underneath the characters is actually reminiscent of the old sketchy look after Disney switched over to the Xerox method of copying the drawings to the celluloid. It was more of a glitch back then, but they embraced it as part of the style. Now, since computers were obviously involved in this project, I think it’s cake to clean it up. So I think those were left in to feed into a more old timey sketchy look.
To answer about the name and the clubs everywhere, Lackadaisy is the name of their once-popular, now-failing speakeasy, and the club was the symbol they chose to represent it. Members of the speakeasy wore a gold-rimmed club pin on their lapel. Similarly, Lackadaisy's main competition is called the Marigold, and members of that speakeasy each wear a Marigold flower somewhere on their person.
16:20 Bro became the joker just by seeing the circus Lmao!😂😂😂
Fun Fact: The person who voices Mordecai (the black cat) is voiced by ProZD.
The BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) was a particularly heavy gun and extremely uncontrollable when shouldered and firing in full auto. She’s keeping the rifle down low because that is the best way to shoot in auto.
People compare it to hazbin hotel and helluva boss but it’s been around longer and have almost no similarities.
its probably because of the voice actors
I think it's literally just because there's 3 main portagonists with 1 being a little bit crazy (?) And the other 2 being a couple
@@tigermations592 also because it's an indie animated media production that started on youtube. But you're allowed to have more than 1 of those so I don't get it either.
@@Nugconthis one didn’t even start on UA-cam either, it’s been a webcomic since before Viv was even in high school
Exactly. There's nothing in common except for being indie animated UA-cam shows with entirely different origins
Yet another fun fact but when rockey smashes into the gate while they are driving it says "sable". The same guy sitting at the bar seeming freaked out by hearing Rocky talk about dynamite. Rocky famously hates Sable in the comic so his maniacal laughter is because he's excited to mess up sables buisness. You'll notice he's all smug to him later. And at the after credit scene you can see Sable witness the damage and.. well he ain't happy 😂
Had a lot of fun watching this reaction--its interesting seeing how someone with no prior exposure to the comic experiences it. Loved your take on the animation and voice acting and music too. The comic is fantastic, btw, and it was so cool to see what this team has been working so hard on! Really enjoyed the pilot and can't WAIT to see where it goes from here.
Yesss I’m so happy you saw this! I do recommend everyone read the comic if they’ve got the time, it’s very good and I was able read it all over the course of a day. It gives you some background on the characters that might help you understand the series more. The series does not follow the same storyline as the comic :)
(And yes, Michael Kovach is the VA of Angel Dust in the Hazbin Hotel pilot!)
The old cars needed to be cranked because they didnt have an alternator, the cranking builds up charge like the alternator does nowadays so the engine can spark and ignite the fuel. If you dont crank it you dont have any way to start it
I loved the remarkable accuracy.
The guns actually seem like certain weapons during that time.
Because they are, the Thompson, the BAR, the 1911 and so on
@@amadeusnagamine9056 well I was meaning the design and ammo count for each gun.
The Bar was probably reloaded when scenes changed to other points while the Thompson wasn’t.
I love how more people are starting to make their own animated series pilots and episodes recently
the cafe is called little daisy and the underground bar is called lackadaisy
Mordecai was about to headshot Rocky but his sudden left turn shifts the mirror into the sights instead.
The music genre they use in the pilot is a version of swing music called electro swing, I thought it was perfect
I saw it this morning the animation is crisp it feels like a cartoon on tv can’t wait for more
She is speaking with a Louisianan dialect of french.
Those pencil sketches were such a great detail. Reminds me of the boiling lines on the characters from Ed, Edd n' Eddy; it helps make it stand out.
As a person that lives in Missouri I love this but what’s I like is that I feel a vibe of the empire of sin and how there tommy gun is iconic as a weapon for gangsters and mobsters in movies and real life
St. Louis and much of the south lost a lot of these more mafia like outfits(and the mafia itself) around the 70s and 90s, not to say organized crime groups don't exist. but these 'old blood' groups are largely history.
The reference lines (the circles etc) were added in AFTER. They erased them, finished the drawing, then added the references back so it looked more raw. That takes some talent.
18:02 Model As had both an electric starter and a backup crank starter
I had heard about that, but that the crank start was the more preferred option because of potential problems the electric start could cause. Seemed to also be a thing with some German tanks during WW2.
if no one knows, the reason "wick" (mr.sable) was asking about the dynamite and machinery was because that was his property and quarry.
(you can tell by the sign they ran into)
Can we just establish the fact that freckle is literally flippy?
You had to crank the car to charge it up and then turn the key
Surprised you didn't noticed that when Mordecai tried to shoot the car again, he saw Ivy and just let them go
About the rifle she was using, that is a Browning Automatic Rifle, or B.A.R. for short. They were designed with walking fire, or hipfire as it is more commonly known, in mind. That is why she sprays from the hip.
Fun fact: the guy who say "about the dinamite and heavy machinery" actually owns the quary and at the end credits after the call you see two photos. One with him looking at the devastated quarry and another one with his face in disbelief
He needs to watch Murder Drones! He'll love the lore and comedy! Trust me Vapor,
I am so dang happy to see you watching this incredible and fantastic masterpiece!!!!!
Fun fact: the voice actor for Rocky is the same person who voices N from Murder Drones
This pilot is so good I can't stop watching it
Same I've watched it like 4 times already
Not an excavator. Or not a modern one, anyways, even by 1920s standards. That's a steam-powered shovel. None remain, as far as I'm aware.
I love how it's all action. Every character has good dialogue, and there is no wasted screen time!!
awe omg i’m so happy to see someone react to this!!!🥹
I agree with the people talking about murder drones imao
He needs to reacto to that!
I'm so happy you're watching it!!! It's really good! :D I'm excited to see where the show will go. I need to read the comics.
I was laughing so hard I was crying when Rocky was rhyming about the Mississippi
Michael Kovach also voices N from murder drones, Angel dust from Hazbin Hotel in the pilot, Fantoccio from Billie Bust Up, and a whole lot of other things.
Thought you were going to say Murder Drones for a second but then I remembered that you haven’t seen it yet. You should, it’s amazing. A new episode comes out next week. It’s a YT series by Glitch Productions. Elsie Lovelock and Michael Kovach voice the main characters in that series.
Those old cars worked in both crank and key start. At that point cars could be start with a key but they kept the crank for whenever it didn't work
Still should've kept it, in my opinion.
@@GipsyDangerfan modern engines are much different and have much less space to add in the stuff
I think it was Hazbin Hotel. Michael Kovach voice acted Angel Dust, N, and now Rocky. He’s done such an awesome job for all the characters he’s voiced
I was thinking it was Funtime Freddy's VA at first with how much of a showman Rocky is, and the insanity on display in the quarry. Once I saw the name I was shocked after looking it up.
Also Malcom Ray (the other driver) is also featured in most episodes of Nostalgia Critic.
They are speakeasies, they were around during the prohibition era

for a pilot, this was amazing and i cant wait to see more from it

I believe that the clubs symbol aludes to the fact that is a clandestine club, and the darker side of a flower, in this case alluding to the "Little Daisy Cafe". The clubs symbol means agriculture, one of the four primary pillars of the Medieval Period economy, also known as trefoils it can mean a lot of other stuff like good luck, work, prosperity, darkness. But probably a good connection is how the clubs is called in Italian "Fiori" which means "flower"
It is interesting, because if we stay with the meaning of prosperity it goes in high contrast with the Lackadaisy's current situation.
(Sorry, I’m using my phone, so I can’t edit comments) it’s called Lackadaisy because that is the name of the speakeasy they work for. A speakeasy was an underground (sometimes literally underground) club where people would go to get booze during Prohibition.
A big reason there are a lot of clubs around also is because this show takes place during the Prohibition period in the roaring 20s where it is illegal to drink so speakeasies were set up all over the place for people to score booze. "underground clubs and bars" As it were. Lots of dirty dealings, gang activity the whole shebang. St. Louis was big in alcohol at that time so I think that was a pretty good place to start off in for the show. Not just saying that because i'm from Missouri. :D. Kind of expected Chicago to be chosen over that though with the whole capone thing.
FYI it's a speakeasy not a club, and those establishments were very common back in the prohibition they were the perfect places to go to get illicit booze and have a good time.
What about Murder Drones?
It's good.
Fact about Rocky voice actor (Micheal kovach) he is also in another cool series titled "Murder Drones" he voiced the second charather named "N" you should watch it too!.
fact: back in the 1920's yes there were cars that needed to be cranked with a handcrank, but from what i remember the electric start cars were just getting popular and they were on the more expensive version of the ford model A which is what the vehicles in this pilot seem to be. All powered by fords famous flathead/L head 4 cylinder engine at around 4HP (horsepower) which is like 2 lawnmower engines combined or 3 depending on the lawnmower. The electric starter switch would be on the floor though not beside the steering wheel. Hope this helps with the questions u have about the vehicles.
Wow first it was a hotel pilot then a assassin pilot THEN NOW A MOFIA PILOT
Convinced another soul to the dark Side ❤❤😊
Michael Kovach (here Rocky) has dubbed Angel Dust in Hasbin Hotel, but only for the pilot, for the rest of the serie that will be another voice actor.
Vapor I finally got time to watch youre channel again I used to watch you like 5 maybe 6 probably more but ims I glad to be back to you’re channel and you still have that same vibe and it’s awesome man
The Web comic is worth the read,
It's the guy that played N in Murder drones 😃 I recognize that voice anywhere
I just realized, how hard would it be to put on pants as a cat? I mean, you would have to fit your tail through a hole in the back and everything!
I figured they’d just have an extra button or something, so it’s less trying to fit the tail through and more just making the cloth fit around it.
So, there's this really interesting show called Murder Drones, which is about space-robot-vampires that feed on other space robots. Pretty funny and nice story so far.
I knew Rocky's voice was familiar! There's another series that Michael Kovach has voiced in that I'm in love with! Not sure if you've reacted to it yet or not, but if you haven't, HIGHLY recommend you react to Murder Drones!
12:35 I thought about that too!! 😭😭 he really be giving flippy vibes 😭
So this is where Michael Kovach has moved his services now that his time as Angel Dust in Hazbin Hotel has ended!
Now he’s a soliloquy-reciting feline called Rocky.
20:03 Speakeasies, where the alcohol goes :)
You pretty much said it after lol
really the only reason folk think this is Helluva is because Rocky happens to be voiced by the same actor who did Angel Dust in the pilot of Hazbin, he is no longer Angel Dust (due to studio rights or something), however he is perfect as Rocky.. people will be sorely disappointed if they think Lackadaisy is going to be Helluva, it is much more "mature" in sense of not being about jokes and edge.. it's much more "serious" for the most part, the comedy comes from how unhinged Rocky is (that and "killer cats" is amusing)
10:19 the music type is called electric swing, basically a modernization of classic swing music from the 20s
So, IIRC, those old cars are actually working exactly the same as the modern ones
A working engine can sustain itself if provided with fuel and (in case of gasoline engines) electricity to it's spark plugs. But before that you need to somehow jumpstart it. In modern cars it is done by a starter. A small electric motor which is turned on whenever you turn your car's keys (also while a car is in motion a starter would work as an electric generator, charging car's battery, almost like a hybrid car). But before 1912 it was done mostly manually via a hand crank. A simple concept on paper, but it not only requires some physical strength, but also an engine can experience a kickback, which could injure a person jumpstarting a car. So, yeah
So your comment about a mix of 1920's/30's music with modern elements, thats a whole flurrishing genre called eletroswing. Check it out!
I still wait for the day he goes to see Murder Drones
Soon

14:13 your right but for whatever reason that rifle don’t actually have an iron sight which is kinda weird. By doing a bit of research on automatic rifles from the late 1910s to early 1920s the I found the M1918 Browning automatic machine gun which I believe to be the closest to the firearm used in the animation. Although the barrel appears to be shorter.
I’m not an expert. I just like firearms and like to do research on them once in a while. And just for clarification, no I’m not American.
