EPICA - Serenade Of Self-Destruction (Retrospect 10th Anniversary DVD I)
• EPICA - Serenade Of Se...
Extracted from DVD Blu-ray (1080i)
Retrospect is the third live album released by the Dutch symphonic metal band Epica in celebration of their tenth anniversary. The recorded live show took part in Eindhoven, Netherlands on March 23, 2013 at the Klokgebouw and was sold out. Because of the great demand by international fans, Epica announced a live stream, called the Retrostream, on March 4, 2013. Epica performed on stage with the same orchestra that accompanied Epica in the recording of the live album The Classical Conspiracy: the 70-piece Extended Hungarian Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of Miskolc National Theatre. The expanded ensemble mostly played Epica songs, including a whole new song called Retrospect, especially written for this live show with the same name. Like on The Classical Conspiracy, Epica played some classical music, excerpts from operas and movie soundtracks, however not as many as on the aforementioned show. The album was released on CD, DVD and Blu-ray on November 8, 2013 through Nuclear Blast Records. Before the release of the show on Blu-ray and DVD, the show premiered at two movie theaters: the Mathäser Multiplex Kino in Munich, Germany and the Service Bioscoop Zien in Eindhoven, Netherlands, although there it was also showed in a Mexican cinema (the Cineteca Nacional).

Epica is on the highest level of musicianship and artistery. Mindblowing, not from this world
This is one of my favourite songs ever. I love it. The lyrics, the music, the vocals... I love everything about it.
Ariën, the drummer, is not nicknamed "the beast" by the band for nothing. Isaac is also a super good guitarist and he's written some pieces for Epica that are just stuck with me (Decoded Poetry from The Solace System). Honestly, the whole band is awesome. Mark writes amazing music and lyrics, Simone's vocals are ethereal and her lyrics just talk to me, Coen is a super good pianist and composer, and Rob is a great bassist and the music he's written for the band is brutal.
Epica shows seem to always be grand. This one in particular, well... it was their 10 year anniversary, so of course they would have made it super special. I think their 1000th show was also something to be remembered, what with the guests and all.
If you love this side of Simone, I'm sure you'll enjoy the last Ayreon song, he Human Equation. Her vocals are super fun and groovy!
Very well said, thx
I saw Epica two times live in concert, most epic metal band. One of my favorites ever. I have all DVDs with their concerts. Omega live is their masterpiece.
This band is just beyond human, stupid talented, the creativity, the orchestra, the choir, the band, and of course Simone, are just outstanding. Perhaps one of the best songs ever!
Ariën van Weesenbeek (drummer) and Isaac Delahaye (lead guitarist) were both in the Dutch death metal band God Dethroned prior to joining Epica and they certainly brought with them some heavier influences.
The drummer is a beast...😉
THIS SONG!!!
This song was the beginning of my Epica obsession some years ago.
“Try me, don’t deny me
Please embrace me in your peace
I want to fly into the bright
Would you please guide my last goodbye?
Why won’t you lie with me?
My light’s ending
On a night, when I find
I’ll take my final flight...”
Absolutely beautiful 🥺
I love when there's an orchestra!! And Epica just seems made for full blown orchestration!
Thanks for all the Epica reactions recently! Keep 'em coming!
For quite some time I thought that this song was an instrumental. Someone messed up on the first edition of the Requiem For The Indifferent album, so there were no vocals on this song (except the choir). Luckily you could download the right version from the band's website for free when they discovered the error. I think this live version is much better than the studio version. Simone's vocals are much more restrained on the studio version, and the song just feels kind of "cold".
If you had ordered it at Nuclear Blast directly, you could contact them around 3 weeks after the official release of the 'no-vocal-CD', and you did get a replace CD with the correct vocals
This is definitely one of my favorite songs! In the original version Simone uses her operatic voice a little bit more, but this performance is just perfect... Requiem for the indifferent album has so many powerful songs like this one... It's a shame that they don't play any of them live anymore...
yeah, react all epica songs on retrospect concert, that so amazing perfect perform🤘🤘🤘
btw, about the drummer, in one moment on middle concert u can see his hand get shaking after play solo drum. that was sick!
It is after "Cry for the Moon" :-) after three minutes (or so) of non-stop drumming
I love this combination of colours they had for the song and it is a bit sad that it does not get picked more often. Simone will be playing The Angel of Death on the new Ayreon ´s album and they released a new lyric video with her singing "This Human Equation". :-)
This composition, out of this world! I wish i was there, it's only 30km from my home, Klokgebouw (clockbuilding), Eindhoven, former Philips stackhouse...
Loved your reaction to this hidden gem, guys! Now I highly recommend to listen to Ascension dream state Armageddon. It shows Epica's death metal influences. And the "lyric video" is freaking awesome.
Hi-oh-silver!! Simone is great and this song kills it too.
Ayreon - This Human Equation (Official Lyric Video) - more Simone goodness! 🤘
I mentioned it a few hours ago :-) maybe, they will notice it. It seems that Simone and Amanda will play villains in this one and I think Marcela was growling in the back
@Zestful Zeitgeist Yes, you are right. It probably also depends on from whose perspective we look at it.
You should react to Once Upon a Nightmare
Retrospect suffers from that light show if you try to watch the whole concert DVD, they really distract from the music. To just listen to this show , it’s perfect.
Imagine this performance as the opening theme to a movie.
Simone kills me on this one
It is all insane!! top performance of the millenium!!
Eluveitie - Rebirth
Great reaction video! I love watching your reactions! Absolutely love Epica and been waiting for this one, probably my favorite Epica song!🤘🔥
Epica always brings it as well!
yeah this is one of my favorite songs as well from epica
From The Netherlands!😊
I actually found Epica because they warmed up for Sonata Arctica the first time I saw them back in... 2006? (I was 13, guys) They are nice live, for sure.
ROCKER NL always brings it just like The Wolf Hunterz Do! 💪💣♨️🤘🤙
Another great reaction! Epica is really good. You could check out Cain's Offering - Stolen Waters. You'll enjoy a lot, I guess. Cheers from Brazil :)
Plz react Épica - Unleashed Live retrospect 😁
The masters of rock performance of 2014 is so much better in my opinion... But unleashed is great to hear everytime!
Interesting how you picked up on Simone's vocal change. I fell that beginning with the album Requiem for the Indifferent, Her vocals start to go away from the operatic style more and more from the previous albums. The bands also got a lot heavier with the previous album Design Your Universe. The symphonic element remains but the band shifts from a power metal sound to a more thrash or death metal sound. Like Simon said (sorry), the additions of Arien and Isaac most likely contributed to that shift.
Simone's mic-stand is shaped in the letter of her name.
"Where do you find a mic stand like that?" - you design it and have it fabricated, or do it yourself.
All you need is some aluminium pipe and a pipe bender.
@@ChrisPage68 Not everyone has ready access to that though. I do at work and could make similar easy enough, but not everyone works in a metal working plant.
And a S isn't that hard and can't be more appropriate, Floor's stand would be a different story..😉🤘
@@JHX1 Floor's mic stand would have to be like based on the sword in the stone or summat.
@@fnglert or just a F and she can share it with Emppu..
pay attention to the little lady singing happily in 5:34 :v
Son increíbles chicos, gracias por seguir con Epica 🤟🏻❤
Mic stand was custom made in the shape of an S for Simone Simmons of course
More!
I really think you should make a deep dive into Opeth :) Bleak will be a nice introduction
Es uno de mis temas preferidos de Epica , no a las religiones extremas
Simone Simons reminds me of a combination of Floor Jansen meets Amy Lee of Evanescence
Love yaaaa, another great video. U should definitely also check Dream Theater "Breaking All Illusions" live from the Boston Opera House
Amoooo 😍😍😍
Ayreon just dropped a new video featuring Simone Simmons .
shoooooooow
Simone has a custom made micestand, ina large S
What?
I think she was pregnant in this show
Correct: Simone was in fact 16 weeks pregnant with her son, Vincent Pelotai, in this show.
You should react to AnnenMayKantereit&Milky Chance - Roxanne (The Police cover)
No.
