Fr., bless-please help me to understand, for I am struggling with something as of late.
If Christ became incarnate to embody the fullness of human nature, including taking on the lowest denominator thereof (i.e., suffering as a result of brokenness/sin, which He experienced though He was sinless), why or how does that help save us in turn from eternal separation from God?
In other words, if suffering is a result of the brokenness of man apart from God due to sin (The Fall), how does Christ taking on that lowest common denominator of our nature help to make us more like God? Isn’t God without sin? I see how Christ’s human suffering can help us relate more to Him and Him to us, to make us more like Christ, but I don’t see why or how that necessarily sets us free from the bonds of sin or makes us more like God.
We all suffer a collective burden due to sin in this fallen world, and by suffering the compounded effects of sin in our world, how are we becoming more like God who is Perfect? If a man is innocent and gets killed for no fault of his own, his family and community will grieve and suffer the loss though they did not necessarily sin to cause the tragedy. Their suffering can reap more pain and suffering in turn, so isn’t that a formula for becoming bitter, resentful, and hardened towards God? How do we carry the burdens and collateral damage of others while carrying our own burdens and not succumb from the totality of them?
The suffering of this world is overwhelming at times when I’m most aware of it, and it crushes my spirit. I say this as someone who is entering the field of healthcare, who has so much empathy for her fellow man.
What must we do to not be overcome by the suffering of this world? Is it in accepting the suffering, despite knowing we are innocent bystanders at times who didn’t do anything to “deserve it”, that we practice being more like Christ? If so, is this the model of God’s love for His creation? Knowing that He is perfectly just and righteous and holy, yet bearing all the depraved things of this world? Won’t He also have the final judgment and spare no one in that judgment?
