Great lesson! My few cents: - rimshots are usually easiest to play when snare drum is table flat, no tilting. However this way is much harder to avoid playing rimshots so that's why some old school drummers had their snare drum at weird angles. They wanted to avoid rimshots since recording technology wasn't really ready to pick such intense peaks in volumes (and it's hard to be consistent with rim shots anyway) - if you want to tune your snare drum super-duper low then 99% you need to play without rimshots. Detuned snare drums sounds weird if not awful when played with rimshots. Usually this is not the sound that your looking from a detuned or dead-muted snare drum to begin with.
Many 'old school' drummers had snares at high angles because they were playing trad grip. Table top flat is harder to develop a rim shot playing trad. When mounted high enough, one can still do rim shots with snares tilted the other way and playing matched - Steve Gadd a great example.

I understand why you made the joke about “hotdogs you play rim shots” because it is a question I have asked drum teachers in the past “er, you need to him the rim and the head at the same time” never actually how to adjust technique to achieve it. That is actually a great question. I probably should have mentioned this in the video. You can play rim shots on toms, but you will lose all the bass, so it is rarely used. It’s more for jazz and Latin and it works best with high pitched toms.

I barely do rimshot 'cause I ain't comfortable breaking to many sticks, but it sounds really good though
