  • Nick Wallis is a reporter who became part of the story, playing a key role exposing one of the most outrageous miscarriages of justice in recent British history.
Hundreds of innocent small businesspeople were remorselessly persecuted because of a computer fault in a saga that casts an unflattering light on the Post Office, the police, the court system and other key UK institutions.

This is what happens when dishonest people are employed/promoted above their ability.

Thank You for covering this. I am following the inquiries. What makes me so so sad is the working man as in investigators also worked against their own class the working class. We all know the majority of Royal Mail and Post Office Ltd have historically been staunch unionists protecting their own…We are aware we will always get fleeced by those with even a little power, shame on the working class of POL for at the very least turning a blind eye and even now you have the opportunity to come clean you have absolutely no remorse for the damage done to hundreds of people and much more far reaching than that… how can you feel no shame for the children who lost their childhood to hard times and being bullied at school because their parents / guardians were branded thieves. You Filth

This was another really fascinating episode. It is amazing how eager governments are to embrace technology without having the expertise to really understand or evaluate its ability to deliver, but are experts at covering it up and off-loading responsibility for its failures. In the process presuming all it’s citizens have criminal intent. This all sounds very similar to Australia’s current Centrelink Robo Debt controversy.

It's not that governments don't know. It's that they have been - and cuntinue to be - good little money-grubbing lapdogs. Phoenix payroll debacle (Australia and Canada) comes to mind. They knew, they got hansomely remunerated, while some employees lost their homes, had to quit their jobs, etc. All of this for the entertainment of those that are part of the eunuch and golem aluminuminati rothschild/royal/papal caccaba'al. No offence intended to the frilly-pantied shake the spear ians. Just BEing (honest).

An early postmaster prosecuted in Northern Ireland obtained an independent forensic accounting report in December 2004 showing random inexplicable errors in the Horizon system, and submitted to the Post Office investigator but its major significance ignored, Further it may not have been properly passed to Post Office UK HQ for review and in-depth investigation, or was ignored nor disclosed for 15 years, either way allowing 1,000 other prosecutions and 3,000 forced repayments, and perhaps the remaining 4,000 postmasters continually making up for false shortages but keeping it quiet from fear.

This report was mentioned by the PO investigator at the Inquest last Thursday 25th January I think. Somehow the defendant McLaughlin pled guilty anyway - £700 fine plus costs. @@philmcraig

Best wide angle interview. And cultural context so interesting -historical attitude to postmasters going so far back - unusual to hear about. Such a story!

Thank you for a wonderful podcast/video - so clear and well informed. You both presented the scandal and interviewed Nick Wallis really well. So many people do not come out of this scandal well including the National Federation of Sub Postmasters, and the staff who took the phone calls when the sub postmasters rang to report their problems. Well done Andrew and Phil.

Superb clarity . Nick Wallis (not Neil). The story is in Nick's book and he has spent his own money for ten years or more investigating and promoting this story -and it has appeared in the Daily Mail several times, occasionally on the front page, and Nick himself helped produce two Panoramas on the BBC, a nationwide Inside Out in all local TV areas, Radio 4 File of 4, and ten R4 Podcasts. Nick who is coming to talk in my local area at my invitation, has spent much of his own time and money investigating and promoting this story and has written the definitive book. He has not only raised the profile of the story but helped ensure that certain facts he uncovered got to the right people in Parliament. His books is tremendous, placing the scandal on the historical record for the future. Nick who is very self effacing and says he is just doing his job (that is what he told me) has sacrificed a lot. He is not the only one who fought for this story to come to light, Computer Weekly has as well, and Alan Bates of the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance (JFSA) brought the court case, being a victim of the scandal himself. But Nick really deserves an award. Alan Bates was offered a CBE but refused it saying he could not accept an award while Paula Vennells still had her CBE -given all the suffering she caused. Thirty three subpostmasters have died never to have seen justice prevail. Three committed suicide. No one has been brought to account.

Wicked is exactly the correct word; and Paula Vennelles still hasn't come clean entirely - I can not abide this behaviour, but it is equally as poor to continue to not be anything other than fully transparent, to give those affected the truth at last.

Just subscribed. Thought I already had sorry. I’ve avoided this episode because I had no idea what it referred to but I read about it on IG a few days ago & now have an understanding of what it’s about. We had our own scandalous witch hunt here in Australia perpetrated by our previous government called Robb Debt where the poorest people in the country receiving Social Security benefits were judged to have been overpaid & required to pay these amounts back. Turned out they didn’t owe these sums in the first place & we had some suicides by some desperate souls. Shocking & appalling miscarriage of justice which cast a well deserved slur on the Liberal government & lost them the last election.
