    Love the clock! Some of my dealers gave me various advertisement clocks for Audemars, Blancpain, etc. Those things have been going for crazy prices at recent auctions.

    Hi Bill, thanks for sharing, the Boutique special edition watches were made every time they opened a new boutique, i.e. the Byblos was made for the opening of the Beirut Boutique. Byblos being an very ancien city where the alphabet was spread to the Mediterranean. Later on the Greeks took it and modified it and after that the Roman who gave us our alphabet.
    The Chrono Bleu is the cheapest of the Souverain collection thus its popularity, the waiting list is about 18 months, which explains why it is dearer than the Chrono. Souverain on the used market.
    The experience of buying a watch from Journe Boutique is like no other.
    I couldn’t agree more, owning a high end watch is not necessary, but the satisfaction on wearing a Journe on your wrist is a complete different feeling. Rolex is many steps lower in my opinion.
    Great vid as always. Thanks again Bill.

      Hi DG B, it may sound snobbish, but it isn't really. At some level, every watch collector recognizes the level of quality beyond the norm and even high horology. Those who appreciate art and visit an art museum with paintings by the masters understand as well. It's hard to explain except through experience. Worthwhile on so many levels. Cheers, Bill

      Hi Bill, as i told you i built a Seagull eta 6498 for my Sons birthday came out really well although i had a major problem with the dial, the dial was 38mm, inside the case it was 35mm i had to take off 1.5 mm from around the dial using the rough side of a dry oil stone it took about 4 hour's over 2 days the outcome was good. How can i send you some photos, and a short video....Regards Bill

    Just discovered your channel. Loved the video and I never thought about supporting someone that is CURRENTLY making timepieces, instead of a Breguet or Patek or whatever. I love your watch (PLATINUM!), but unfortunately I have already retired and a new watch isn't in the budget. My meager collection consists of a TAG/Heuer Carrera and an Oris Sporty Elegance (I think), both purchased back in the 1990's. I am going to investigate that quartz watch you mentioned by F.P. Journe.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  5 років тому +2

      Indeed I too am retired and my watch buying has changed drastically ... but it's actually more fun because I have to really think about what it is in a watch that's valuable. As for the TAG Heuer, I do like the Gulf Monaco but only that particular Monaco. Check out the video on building a Military Watch ... or any watch you want. Much more economical to build a watch than buying one. Kindest regards, Bill

    congrats on you Jorune! I'd like to add one "artisan" type watch brand that is a little more affordable... Dornbluth. made by one watch maker and 2 "assistant" watch makers. I use quotations because the other 2 are also master watch makers. runs around 4k and up. anyway, yeah, I'd love to own a FP Journe one day... especially the chronometre bleu. souveraine line is exceptional!

    Great video Bill, i salute you on your new FP Journe wall clock, looks fantastic. i really love the deisgn, metals, and movements from FP Journe, but the prices are out of my league at the moment, but i think a good step before getting a FP Journe, is getting an A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 or a 1815. Actually my second grail watch after the Zeitwerk is the Resonance. I think on a budget, a pre-owned Parmigiani Fleurier is the best way to get high horology.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  5 років тому +1

      Hi Thomas, the 'bigger' brands are generally bigger because their watches are mass produced. In some of the smaller brands with talented watchmakers leading the effort, what you find is craftsmanship. It's hard to appreciate the hand of the master watchmaker's craftsmanship in mass produced watches. Unfortunately, they tend to be very expensive. Take care, Bill

    • @TDwulf
      @TDwulf 5 років тому +1

      WatchArtSci exactly true. A watchmaker like F.P. Journe can make whatever he wants. The master watchmakers behind Rolex, Omega, IWC etc need to stick to what’s demanded of them because they need to be making stuff that can be mass produced and bought by the masses

    Hi there Bill, just watched your video and I am considering an FP Journe.
    I was going to spend $10,000 on a Dornblueth in house and I though maybe to put it towards a Journe. However, I am also not sure on the Journe, if it will be worth the $20,000.
    By the way, the Byblos Blue Model you talked about is a Boutique edition from the 10th boutique opened my Journe in my country .

    Well you sold that to me, I'll take a platinum one please ^^ I don't have a platinum watch but platinum is a great material, very hard to work, high melting point and tough material. Not that I have a tantalum watch either but I have no experience in that regard so the idea has yet to grab hold of me. The trouble is we all have finite resources and cannot have them all so we need to chose our priorities and you make a good case for the FP Journe, no better example of master horologists work makes better sense.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 років тому +1

      Hey Daveyboyz, glad you liked it. About finite resources... mine are becoming more finite daily! FP Journe watches, while not at bargain prices, still represent about the only watches you can get from a living grand master watchmaker within the realm of possibility. The platinum Chronomètre Souverain is among my favorite. It is presented as the archetype of FPJ watchmaking, and it is the one that FPJ gave to George Daniels as a gift shortly before Daniels died. ( www.hodinkee.com/articles/on-the-block-an-fp-journe-souverain-cs-given-to-george-daniels-by-fp-journe-the-man ) I'm not sure why there's not more interest in it, but that's a boon to collectors who can find them priced less than the popular Chronomètre Bleu and in [relative] abundance! Cheers, Bill

    Good evening Mr. Sanders, first of all I would really say thank you for all your incredible work on horology. My question: do you know if any of F.P.Journe watches use base material like silicon, especially for springs? I think that silicon surely owns a high level of physics features, but is not appropriate for a long lifetime watches like these should assure. Silicon is strictly connected with computer development, and for my standpoint it is a transient material that in the next 30-40 years, most likely will disappear. Thank you in advance for your availability. Cheers from Florence, Italy 👍

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  3 роки тому +2

      Hello Francesco ... yes, there have been ventures by FPJ exploring silicon-based hairspring (www.hodinkee.com/articles/fp-journe-firehouse-horology-collaboration), but I prefer the more traditional methods using non-magnetic metals like niobium alloyed with titanium or chromium. Of course silicon has certain advantages that metal alloys do not, but that's like saying quartz movements are more accurate than mechanical ones. So I may sound old-fashioned, and as far as hairsprings are concerned, I am. I was in your beautiful city, Florence, back in the 1970s. A couple of years ago I returned for a short visit ... tourists (like me) have overrun the city! Still, though, we found a wonderful restaurant and great people there. Take care and stay safe, Bill😷

      Did you get it?

  • @uptheorg
    @uptheorg 2 роки тому +1

    Bill, Thanks for this video. I have been wrestling with myself over the purchase of a FPJ Chronometre Souverain 40mm in platinum for several months because I am buying it second-hand and the market is about double the retail at this point. So, watching your video today, it looks soooooo dated when you talk about prices. Nevertheless, today I made the deal to acquire the CS with the gold dial and raised numerals carved out of the dial and ruthenium-coated. This version came out in 2014, but was not mentioned in your overview. (Hodinkee's Clymer reviewed it.) I have assembled my collection with an eye towards whether I love the piece and not based at all on whether it was a good investment. Unfortunately, this watch is so expensive now that I had to consider the financial risk I was taking and I have determined that even though FPJ timepieces have jumped in value tremendously in the past few years, the value will likely not decline because they are truly like rare works of art available from the artist while he is still alive. You are not the only collector who has compared Journe to Picasso, and this was a factor in my final decision. Thank you again, Jim

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jim, I enjoy wearing my CS more than most of my watches ... something about it. If you get your CS; don't worry about resale value ... don't re-sell it! I just got a new band for mine. The FPJ Boutique in NYC was almost out of bands, and so I got a shiny blue gator one from Jean Rousseau Paris. Piece of advice-when you have it serviced; get it overhauled as well. All worn parts will be replaced, and when the FPJ Service Center in Miami (or Geneva) returns it, they include a free band. Right now I'm wearing my Chronomètre à Résonance, which I like very much too, but the CS is better for everyday use. Take care, Bill

    Amazing video, I'm new to your channel but I really appreciate the way you go and how much you share in term of knowledge. I'm contemplating the buy of an FP Journe Chronomètre Souverain or maybe blue. I would like your opinion o' one thing if I may : how do you see the market and the brand itself reacting to an hypothetical disparition of FP Journe himself? Do you think the brand will sustain that? How about pre-owned market prices? (I deeply hope that it does not happen anytime soon but that's in my mind so I share)

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 років тому +1

      Adrien, I got both of mine on the used market and took them to the FPJ Boutique in NYC and had them look at it. One I had, without papers, they took the their 'basement lab' and did some things and sent them to Geneva. A couple of weeks later, I got the papers signed by F.P. Journe personally verifying the watch. About six months later, I sent both watches to the FPJ Service Center in Miami for service and overhaul, and now they're like new. FP Journe's son is one of many apprentices, but I don't think FPJ is going anywhere soon. Think of it this way, F.P. Journe is to watches what Pablo Picasso was to paintings. Treat a watch purchase at this level like you would a Picasso painting while he was still around. As for maintaining value, one doubled in price and the other only increased in value by a couple of thousand dollars. As Dorothy said to Toto, "I don't think we're in Kansas any more."

    Just adore the F. P. Journe. I have a Fortis, it’s good Swiss watch...it’s not as imposing or has the quality of course of a Journe, but..... to be honest though, my modest Citizen Solar, Khaki, with alloy holes in the khaki band is unique. I think solar watches seem magical. You know, it can be off your hand for ever and still be going as long as it has artificial light ( doesn’t have to be sunlight). It can outlive me, it probability will, without any maintence, isn’t that magical. I can’t leave my mechanical auto off my hand longer than for say, 48 hours...It stops, and any quartz battery watch eventually stops and isn’t environmentally suitable. Think of all those quartz watch batteries in the world being unnecessarily replaced every two years or so. It’s as if Solar watches have come from another world, a great world. There’s plenty to love in a modest solar watch, it is wonderful tech too, sort of like a Journe. And my Citizen keeps wonderful time.

    They do the "boutique" ones to try and keep the secondary in check. He doesn't want people,(flippers), to walk in, by a watch then double their money 1/2 a block down the street. That is why the pre owned cost olny 2000 less than a brand new.

    Hey Bill , Just dropped by to say hi , and good bye, I’ve been sick for about 4 months or so , I was telling people something was wrong, but they just didn’t want to hear or didn’t care , I finally ended up going to the emergency room twice explained I was having pain in a circle around my chest and stomach, at the hospital they took an X-ray and took blood both times they sent me home with a clean bill of health? Well about a week after my last visit to the ER at about one in the morning I decided to have a couple peanut butter cookies and chocolate milk to push it down , about an hour after that I started getting stuff shooting up in my throat, finally some shot out of my mouth , then I got nauseous and went into the bathroom to throw up , well I was puking pure blood , I threw up about 3 times and the blood was getting worse,so I yelled to my wife , and she got her Mom to run me to the hospital, I had to stop and throw more blood up all the way , by this time I’m getting week , I had to go through hell trying to get admitted, she gave me a puke bag to fill as I’m about to pass out from loss of blood , she wanted the I dotted, then she tells me to go in the waiting room ? I almost went out , then the next day after the tests. They should have done a week earlier! They come back and tell me that I have esophagul cancer ! And it has spread to my lungs and liver ? Sorry about the long boring story Bill , I guess I’ll never get my grail watch , God Bless you Bill , and maybe a prayer my way wouldn’t hurt , I’ll send you one Bill , 🙏🏻

      @@JohnCook-bx4gv There're so many "how much will it be worth later...." threads in other quarters, I really am not much good at it. In one of his interviews, FPJ went on about how much his watches would be worth after he kicked the bucket, comparing it to a car designer who died and his cars soared in value. (This was to encourage buyers to get one now-they must have used a gray makeup to make FPJ look like his passing was imminent, but your can find the video on the FPJ FB page.) Check out Roger Dubuis watches (Roger died not long ago). The models he designed and made seemed to have gone up in price, while others of more recent vintage have not. The one should be called the dart board ? Again same movement for the special addition, but I’m guessing the prices are through the roof , now gun metal ? H n H sell some very very high end weapons, but they are usually done in some really out of this world engravings, I wonder why they didn’t do anything like that on the watch ? That would at least help with the price of the watch , gun metal just isn’t doing it for me , I’ve had some nice weapons and my one rifle I took hunting and there was a light snow ,after I was done hunting I put it in my gun sack and went home , got a call to do something and forgot to wipe my weapon Down, the very next day I opened the sack and my rifle had rusted right through the bluing and this was no cheap weapon, so would that happen to a watch with gun metal if it got wet ? I think Rich Mille makes a watch out of meteorite steel? And charges let’s just say you could probably buy a dozen or more FPS for the price , isn’t gold from outer space and just as old ? Make that 6 dozen

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  5 років тому

      Pat, for some reason, FP Journe has a personal collection of watches made from gun metal. I guess he decided he'd create a gun metal dial out of H&H shotgun barrels and use the FP Journe Chronomètre Souvrain without the small seconds or power reserve indicator. Rather steep in price, and I'll just hang on to my CS and be happy with it. Cheers, Bill

    Dear Bill,
    I am a young collector and I love to pass by the Journe AD and try on some watches. I would love to get myself a platinum chronomètre souverain like this one but I’ve heard from people online that Journe watches are unreliable and have many faults (of course this is not what I hear at the AD). I would like to know your thoughts on this as I realize that the AD would surely not mention problems with their watches but there are also many people online who like to talk badly about things they cannot afford. Have you had any problems with your Journe watches or know people who have, and would you recommend me getting one?
    Keep making these interesting videos and I wish you the best,
    Matthieu

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  3 роки тому +1

      Matthieu, the Internet is full of misinformation, and you have to be careful whom you believe. F.P. Journe watches are fine pieces of horological art and must be taken care of. So if someone knows someone who had a problem, that's quite possible. However, most 'collector-to-collector' chats are unreliable. I have two FPJs, a Chronomètre Souverain (2007) and an early (2002) FP Journe Chronomètre à Résonance; both purchased pre-owned. After a while, I noticed that neither would unwind all the way-they had never been serviced. So I send them both to the FPJ Service Center in Miami (in 2017), and ever since then, they've had no problems at all. The platinum CS is one of my favorites to wear. Would I recommend buying one? If you can afford one, yes. Take care and stay safe, Bill😷
