    Brilliant video Andrew - love this car - my third favourite Audi after the ‘78 Audi 80 Fox (Aussie model with 1.6) and ‘82 Audi 200T I lusted after whilst growing up 😍 and whilst I have never owned one my brother got the Audi bug and has owned an A3 1.8T, A4 2.0 TDI Avant and A5 3.0 TDI Sportback all at same time and still has the A3 with nearly 200,000 km. We all liked VAG cars as positive experience with a VW1500 Type 3 wagon my mother drove/thrashed as kids - she was someone that enjoyed driving with a Mk1 Celica and 2 Alfasuds that followed also ensuring I appreciated cars like the RS2 - affording to own one is a different matter so thanks so much for the video and demonstrating the magic Porsche added :)

    Just came across this after watching the JayEmm review around the same date. Wonder what the logic was from Audi UK getting people to drive it? I also have that magazine Andrew, it was just before Audi Driver came out as its own standalone title. A good magazine through the 90's and 2000s. Had my URQ 20v with BRM/Superchips upgrade to 286 bhp with increased
    lower down torque from 1700rpm. Took RS2 for drive at local dealer to see difference. Not impressed. It was iconic on launch when I saw it in Audi dealer in Harrogate but driving it...hmmm. The steering is like a boat (I had an 80 Competition V6 and was the same), plus the same Abt white dials. But that 6 speed gearbox and bigger turbo - what hard work, As mentioned, mine (5 speed) pulls from 1700 rpm like a truck esp in 2nd and third but that 6 speed, you have to get it up to 3k rpm and then keep changing. Plus 1st is useless, like the Quattro. The RS4 B5 I subsequently had was far better - sequential turbos, good torque and far better handling. You made the right choice on your B5 Andrew and I would have another one again in a shot (still trying to find mine as it had beige (silver) interior and Piano Black gloss trim.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 роки тому +1

      Audi UK have an awesome heritage fleet and like their car to be exercised by safe pairs of hands. JayEmm did a special Audi series of videos for his birthday and the RS2 was at Audi UK HQ in MK. I can't recall why I was down there, maybe it was especially for this video (you would wouldn't you!) but my drive came about because the car was out of storage for JayEmm.
      Weirdly I found the chassis of the RS2 more normal feeling than B5 RS4. I put that down to the ET20 wheels of RS4 (necessary for its wide body) playing havoc with steering feel, much like it would with big spacers fitted. Engine wise though as you say, B5 is incredible

    • @paredding
      @paredding 3 роки тому

      @@volkswizard The B5 did tramline a bit on B roads with worn channels in surface or high centre camber roads but around corners on A roads, there was no comparison. I did touch 260kph in it once on a very fast autobahn bend then remembered all the issues with the soft alloys on launch and thought of the loads so dropped back to a more civilised speed. The RS6 I traded it in for was also spectacular, like an iron fist in a velet glove and that V8 warble. It was the only car my wife ever noticed the performance with ist twin sequential turbos.

  • @unixnation
    @unixnation 5 років тому +1

    Great video, really enjoyed your review of this car. It's interesting that as manufactures, especially VAG, have put so much work in to eliminating turbo lag and making modern variants drive like they're not turbo cars at all, so enthusiasts have gone back to those older cars and found them more engaging! I also wonder if, being an earlier generation, this is a fair bit lighter than the RS4 you took down the same road?

    • @161BMW
      @161BMW 5 років тому

      unixnation eliminating turbo lag makes it more predictable to drive and safer

  • @biff128
    @biff128 5 років тому +1

    How is the gear ratio? Considering the amount of lag I would think they would make the ratio tighter so that you can manage the power band and keep the turbo spooled. Otherwise I bet it would feel very clunky when pushing it hard through all the gears... such a beautiful car.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 років тому +1

      I'd say the gearing is indeed quite short as it isn't a car that hits big number without you noticing. Once it's in 'the zone' you can change gear and it remains in the power band all the way to the top of sixth. It's just getting it up to 3500 in normal driving that might provide tiring for drivers not in the mood but when you are it's one of the most engaging experiences I've had behind the wheel ever (on the road anyway) 👍

      Yes Jon, the size is the same. This car ran its original Dunlops for many years but it was decided to replace them recently as it felt to much of a risk to run such a precious car on 2 decades old rubber (8 years is the recommended maximum life of a tyre). It's running Dunlop Sport Maxx now which I assume are as close to the original spec as possible. Tyre technology as come on a lot in the meantime so I have no doubt they are at least as good as the originals. Dunlop was also OEM for B5 RS4, don't see many of their tyres around much these days though curiously.
