This is absolutely fantastic! I cannot express what an articulate and comprehensive instructor you are! I’m going to watch this at least ten times. It is SO good. In your thorough explanation you do not waste a single word; it is perfection. I commend you, and thank you! Nobody teaches this well!
This is the best tutorial on the Spanish opening I've ever seen, absolutely fantastic, congrats, mate! My first thought was that it must be a click bait title, but it fully delivered what it promised!
There is no emotional damage if you study Ruy Lopez. It is an opening with universal value that will help you understand many very important concepts as long as you try to understand it and not memorise it. The guy who did the video has done nothing of the 2.
Your presentation is as if I am playing a winning game by analyzing the pros and cons of each move in my mind wherein you are sitting and instructing me as a divine soulmate. Very eager to watch your other/further presentations.
You're a great person..the way you explain..the simplicity..the way you talk..you're a great man and you deserve great appreciation...and your channel will be in the top, just keep going...you're unbelievable dude and lovely person😊❤
Thanks for your kind words! Since our content is mostly dedicated to beginner-intermediate players, I try my best to explain everything that comes to mind, even if it's a simple concept or move, in hopes that everyone can have a fun and easy time learning and improving their chess skills. Enjoy! 🌟
Thanks! I used to struggle to the Ruy Lopez before; I didn't understand anything of the opening. Through this video, I'll wait to destroy positional play with attack!
I think Na5 Bb3, and next Nxb3. The white Bishop was a greater danger than the black’s Knight who was pined and inactive. The opened a file doesn’t do much for the white, in addition white can’t castle Queen side because of that, so after castle King side with the center blocked, black can develop his King side attack as shown in the video, by pining the Knight on f3 and pushing the h pawn. If white doesn’t castle, than break the center with f5 pawn (white’s f4 pawn is weak).
Thanks, I know a decent amount of theory to get an equal position in the Ruy Lopez, however I don't like the resulting position as it's more tactically rich for white. This video will be going in my repertoire against the Ruy Lopez.
Trading should be fine in that case as bishops usually worth more than knights and opponent lost centre space. Pawn can be recaptured after dxc5 with Ne2.
Even english is not your tongue, though you explained nicely in very simple way. It doest cover everything, and cant be covered in 20 minute video. But what is explained in 20 minutes, is really cool.
Thank you for this in deph defense against the spanish. It usually doesnt bother me too much, but i feel like even with a equal position there is just more opportunity for white.
16:03 - Why not to capture bishop on g4? After black capture with a pawn on g4 and open the line for the rook - there is a move of white bishop to g5. And it looks like a problem. I don't see any way to check mate or somehow save the game.
Bg5 is a blunder, Qf6 and now the Knight on f3 who defends the g5 Bishop is under attack by the pawn on g4 so has to move and abandon the g5 Bishop to the hungry Queen. You gave a free Bishop.
After castling, Black can play Bg4 and the pin is very annoying for White as he doesn't have his light squared bishop anymore. Also, if White tries h3 to kick away the bishop on f4, Black can respond with h5 with similar ideas shown in the video.
I remember your previous comment along with others requesting this video. Hopefully, now you're better equipped to face the Ruy Lopez. Good luck in your future games! 🌟
Some very interesting material here! Nice to see Black fighting back in the Ruy Lopez! Thanks for a useful presentation!! Black may have to be aware of Bxc6+ at move 5 also since you are required to retake the bishop with the 'b' pawn.!? True, you gain the 2 bishops in the process.
Thanks for the suggestion! While we already have specific topics planned, we will definitely consider creating a video on how to beat the Vienna in the future.
I've been enjoying your opening theory videos! This was a take on the Ruy Lopez I had not seen before. I'd like to see a video on the Pirc if you feel inspired to make one.
Your video is great!! Your explanation step by step is wonderful. I've been looking for a defense against Ruiz Lopez opening and you delivered an excellent presentation. My opponents get surprised when I move the d6 pawn. They take some time to answer the move. In the first variation 5.d4, what would you do if White doesn't take the pawn on d4 with the queen and instead pushes the e4 pawn to e5? Would fianchetto the bishop on b7 or defend the f7 pawn moving the bishop to e6? Thank you.
16:09 white actually can move the knight Ng5 as it is protected by the bishop and blocks Qh4. In this case to continue the attack black can play Qh6 but white defends with Nh3, discovery attack on queen. If Qh7, Qxg4 and black loses the attack with white queen guarding the knight and white is just winning. If Qh5, guarding the pawn, white plays Be3 developing move as black cannot proceed with the attack. If gxh3, Qxh5, Rxh5 and the evaluation is equal.
Black can also continue with Nf6 followed by Nf4. After exchanging the f3 Bishop for the f4 Knight, the white Knight on h3 will eventually fall or move and battery Rook + Queen on h file is unstoppable. It’s interesting though the white’s continuation after …Nf6, f4 followed by black’s Ne5 threatening Nf3+, protecting the g5 pawn against the white Queen and forcing an exchange of white Rook for the Knight, or g5xNh3 and the attack continues.
Spanish opening is my opening. Question to chess sensei or anyone. Does the above defense work as well if you forceend game with queen exchange??? Anyone?

@@ChessSensei Thanks for the reply! I'd like it to be in black's perspective, i want to know about the trap (fishing pole and the other one), and what to do if they play otherwise (if they play the best move in that position or..) Thank you!
13:12 Sure, the Modern Steinitz is a viable option but most of the analysis given in the video is quite useless since the only critical moves are not analysed: After 5.0-0! Bg4!? 6.h3 h5 every serious player who has ever looked at this variation plays either 6.d4 or 6.Bxc6+ bxc6 first and then 7.d4. The whole line starts there and it is immensely critical and complicated. 6.c3 is wrong and maybe only in online blitz amongst weaker players popular.
I can answer the 3 questions...: 1. I don't have an over the board rating (but I've managed to overcome 2000 in online rapid games). 2. I've done 3 remote tutoring sessions till now (1 of them has to do with chess). 3. I've made some UA-cam videos in 2022.
Hi, first of all thnx for for video. But I think Ruy Lopez is an solid opening, when played correctly. The lines showing white make mistakes and bad moves. Example, 5. Nxe5? In exchange variation. Also in Columbus variation, 5.d4?!. Why? And even worse, move 8. Qxd4?? A blunder, it's unlikely a good Lopez player make that move. I think every opening can be crushed when opponent blunders.
Hi, thanks for the comment and insights! You're right that when played correctly, the Ruy Lopez is indeed a solid opening. However, please bear in mind that our content is mostly tailored for beginner-intermediate players. In our videos, we showcase the moves and variations that are most commonly played by an average player, as indicated by the Lichess database. For instance, 5. d4 is actually the third most played option, as shown in the screenshot in the video. Similarly, 8. Qxd4 is by far the most frequently played move according to the database. While advanced players might avoid these lines, it's important for our audience to be aware of them and know how to respond. Appreciate your perspective, and hope you continue to enjoy our content! 👍
You know what ... you can become a very good Options Trader in the Stock Markets, as option trading strategies and fire fighting adjustments is very much like playing chess. 👍
Honestly, I don't know any main lines to counter the Ruy Lopez, so I just play the Jaenisch Gambit against it, since that one seems easier to remember.
Actually 5.0-0 Bg4?! 6.h3 h5?! is a very dubious idea, suitable only for speed chess. 7.d4! as in the recent game Cheparinov- Kovalev, Sharjah Masters 2023, is very strong (and Dzindzi-style, not mentioned at all in the video). Either 5...b5 6.Bb3 Nf6, which will likely transpose to regular Ruy Lopez lines, or 5...Bd7 with a slightly passive but very solid position, are the moves to play as Black.
You know how to play @user-ig8qd4tt7b Thats the line called "The fishing pole trap". Play that sucker line and give white a tempo. Those type of traps work great for U1400 players, but will never work on 1800+ players.
this will more than likely work against a patzer like me, but I don't think it will be quite so effective against higher rated, better prepared opponents.
