I actually own a bottle of this (a rare occurrence given what y'all have been reviewing lately). And you nailed it. It's very nice (and reasonably priced). It's clearly a rye...but it is not a _typical_ rye (as defined mainly by MGP in recent years). I'd say that, in addition to real rye lovers, this is one to send whisk(e)y lovers who don't know rye well but want to get a sense of the range of flavors that are possible in rye. If I ever have a kind of introduction to rye whisky tasting, FEW would likely be among the five-to-eight ryes that I'd choose for it. (Fun fact: the distillery is named after Frances E. Willard, president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, which, for over a century, has been based in Evanston, Illinois, er, Illinoise).
Holy hell, a King's X reference!? I wish i could give this vid more than 1 like. I've had the FEW Bourbon and American Whiskey and enjoyed them both but never restocked either on my home shelf. I'll go find the rye now just because of the KX reference lol. Cheers Whiskey Vault!
This is easily one of the best ryes I've ever had. For the price, the taste. It's amazing. Okay now I'll watch the video. Marzapan was a big note to me. Daniel is spot on. When I got a grip of like 7 ryes, this one stood out and has been slowly drunk through.
Keep up the great work guys! I recently got into whiskey while on my honeymoon and just stuck to Japanese whiskey but because of you guys I’ve ventured out into trying Irish whiskeys and scotch and found I really like them too.
Would be interested to see what you think of their Immortal Rye, which uses cold brew oolong tea to proof it down instead of water. As a tea fan and rye fan, I enjoy it quite a bit.
Got a bottle as a gift 2 years ago, and I really liked it. Personally I found a very strong carrot note, especially in the nose, but also in the taste.
I categorize this one with Woodinville and Rabbit Hole Boxergrail in my mind as non-standard-MGP rye. They're all much darker in color and have a similar profile imo.
The knowing look Daniel gives the camera while pronouncing the S in Illinois... Having been born in that state I was all ready to raise some comment hell, but that look, he knows what he's doing. I love me some good natured ball busting! Cheers you magnificent bastard!
I am enjoying the SMWS FEW rye at (RW1.3, 62.6%) and it is spectacular and I am getting some of the fruit and ginger they talk about. I wanted to see what they thought about with the regular release. Daniel mentioned wanting this at cask strength, and I wish I would have bought a "FEW" more....though they aren't accepting bottles anymore.
I hear music over my head too br. Obscure is an extreme understatement, the lead singer was a skinny black guy with an extremely long solid white mohawk made him look like Storm from X-Men during the morlock issues
Thanks for the review, saw this here in P.A for $45. Thinking about trying it. Which is better this or the Sazerac rye because I tried to Sazerac rye and I’m not a big fan of it
Weird question that i don't know if its come up before. Have any distilleries tried smoking filled barrels of whiskey? Like put a bunch of barrels in a room and smoke them for a period of time and see if that permeates into the whiskey? And on a related note would that also work for other scents and volatile compounds? Like store a barrel in a room full of say... coffee, sage, etc would that impact the whiskey?
Balcones's infamous (and delicious, imo) Brimstone is made by smoking the spirit, after it's been distilled. But I'm pretty sure that's done before it hits the barrel (it's certainly not done _in_ the barrel).
I have a local distiller in St. Louis that will let you buy a barrel of their whiskey, hold in their racks and let you taste to decide when it ready to bottle. Instead of letting you just sample and bottle an already aged barrel.
Yes, Yes! I can feel the Illinois rage grow every time you pronounce the 'S'. This brings my Cheesehead heart great joy. Keep it up. Go Pack, and %@#$ Da Bears.
So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry And them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "This'll be the day that I die…
Ill-ah-noyz. Could be worse, like Ill-ah-noygk (Daniel-ese). Or Eel-ihn-wah (for the French-Canadians). Rex: “Is that a Ginger?” Daniel: “It might be Ginger, but I prefer Mary Ann.”
I have nothing to do with how or what other people donate. Perhaps other people should have donated long before Oct 1. There are plenty of other folks coming up so there will be a break between my reviews. Most of the time, the whiskey reviews are done in order they arrive. Of course Daniel has admitted he does switch it around on occasion.
You do know distilling is only illegal if you get caught. Some home brewers do it all the time without a license. Just don't do it in public and don't sell it publicly. They have no say what you do in your own home, for now anyway. You can even buy a still on wish if you're a cheap ass. Just don't blow yourself up or burn down your house. You'll be fine.
William Schappert? Are you there? Are you adopting children? I'm a 32 year old man and I would love to throw the pigskin, smoke cigars, pretty much whatever you want if you will just let me lay in the middle of your whiskey collection. Please? Please....
King's X?!? Hell yeah! That reference got a long time watcher to leave a first comment. Thanks for the great content over the years, y'all.

Can't wait to see RWF tomorrow.

I have a King’s X album and I work in Evanston, Illinois. This episode speaks to me.
This is easily one of the best ryes I've ever had. For the price, the taste. It's amazing. Okay now I'll watch the video.
Marzapan was a big note to me.

Has William Shappert ever thought of starting his own Whisky Tuber channel? Contact me if you want some tips on starting one.
Good morning you MBs!
My wife is from Evanston, Illinois and she can't stand people saying IllinoiSS... So I say it all the time of course!
Same thing, with Dessss Moinesssss, IA. And Beat Rice, NE. And Wahooters, NE.
Ok, I may be a child. My wife tells me so regularly.
@@nobodyimportant5417 ha!
Grrrrr... I was almost triggered with the IllinoiSSSSS! Almost.
I like that you put two bottles in the background to spell out Rye 🤘
Keep up the great work guys! I recently got into whiskey while on my honeymoon and just stuck to Japanese whiskey but because of you guys I’ve ventured out into trying Irish whiskeys and scotch and found I really like them too.
Everyone's smell references are different. When I tried Few my brain immediately screamed "Spaghettios" when I smelled it.
The founder just came and did a tasting and signing at the store at work at ! good stuff
Would be interested to see what you think of their Immortal Rye, which uses cold brew oolong tea to proof it down instead of water. As a tea fan and rye fan, I enjoy it quite a bit.
That sounds amazing
I'd never heard of this, and now I must find it!
Not a musician, but I used to love King's X! Been a long ass time since I heard that name though.
Lagavulin is taking over the back shelf. It has begun!
Si, great content as always!
Cool points for the King's X reference.
I love the Few Rye. It's one of my favorites.
You finally got to my favorite Rye! (I could swear I get a bit of a spearmint note from it)
Got a bottle as a gift 2 years ago, and I really liked it. Personally I found a very strong carrot note, especially in the nose, but also in the taste.
Good morning all you MBs! Which one of you are they taking the piss out of with the Illinoisss?
Those damn gingers can get into anything
Good morning gentlemen
LOVE me some KingsX! Great reference!
FEW is my favorite Rye.
I categorize this one with Woodinville and Rabbit Hole Boxergrail in my mind as non-standard-MGP rye. They're all much darker in color and have a similar profile imo.
Could it be that the "craft root beer" note is sarsaparilla?
Good Morning Magnificent Bastards!
Ola!
The knowing look Daniel gives the camera while pronouncing the S in Illinois... Having been born in that state I was all ready to raise some comment hell, but that look, he knows what he's doing.
I love me some good natured ball busting!

Wow!! KING'S X.. you are a musician!! 👍👍😄
Can you do a top 10 whiskys of 2021 and an all time list? Would love that
"It tastes like a Rye.. even tho it's a Rye" lol
I thought for sure this was going to be a 95/5 MGP rye when I saw the thumbnail. Sigh of relief!
I hear music over my head too br. Obscure is an extreme understatement, the lead singer was a skinny black guy with an extremely long solid white mohawk made him look like Storm from X-Men during the morlock issues
Daniel looking like he loves triggering the pronunciation police ☠️
Thanks for the review, saw this here in P.A for $45. Thinking about trying it. Which is better this or the Sazerac rye because I tried to Sazerac rye and I’m not a big fan of it
It’s not similar to Sazerac. This is closer to Rittenhouse to me
Wish I could a reference but I believe the FEW name comes from the initials of Francis Elizabeth Willard of the temperance movement in Evanston, Il.
You guys crack me up…trying to come up with a description is painful!
Greasings and lubrications MBs! 🥃🥃🥃
Horehound candy. I’m pretty sure that is the funky farm root beer-ish note in Few. No missed comedic opportunities there.

As an Illinoisian, I am impervious to the pain of its mispronunciation. That shitty grin Daniel had from mispronouncing it purpose was killing me😂
Ha, just finished a Gift bottle of few burbon. Also has that huh reaction. Rootbeer makes sence.
Thanks for the reply to my question, are you guys planning on doing that method with one of your whiskeys?
Sadly can’t get their Rye up here in Canada but the bourbon they have is really good.

Morning boys! Luckily, living in IllinoiSSS, their full lineup is available to me.
We need to hear from the folks in ArkanSASSS and ConNECKticut. Come on, folks, step up.
This one was all dill pickle and herbal to me
Ok fine, yes, I'm from Illinois and the pronunciation of the S is hurting my soul 💩
Good morning Gentlemen.
Perhaps a bit nosy but what is the price of buying a MGP barrel and what does that work out to per bottle?
Hoping the cost savings are enough that I could convince the wife it is a good idea.
@@unclemikiesworld you have to have a license to buy….distilling, retail, etc…..

Wow, I haven't heard the name Kings X since the 90s lol
Another interesting find not available near me.
yes as someone from Illinoise that was slightly triggering until i realized he was doin it on purpose .. but it does bug us

Hey Daniel, I was born in Great Lakes, illanoise.
It’s Thursssssday. Apologies to Illinois. Enjoy the rye.
🤘King’s X!!! 🤘
1:50 For sure thought a joke was coming here
You would be able to get alot more different names and people of you didn't keep using stuff from William S.
I have nothing to do with how or what other people donate. Perhaps other people should have donated long before Oct 1. Ok, I want to blow up my friends...

I believe it's pronounced (from the French), Eel-in-wah. 🙄
that's not rye, it's a blend
You have to drop the s or you will always be wrong.
L uh Noise ? lol
Illinois is pronounced "ass hat".🤣
C'mon man, everybody knows its pronounces ILL-N-OY

If you travel to Boise, I shall share my stash :)
"Freedom" had to be censored? WTAF?!
Don't pronounce the s
How dare you pronounce the S..... you probably put ketchup on hotdogs don't you......
