      @pmpowalisz I mean, aside from the fact that condensing it to 8 eps took away a lot of what made the cartoon work in terms of worldbuilding and character development, there's the overall stripping away characters and their flaws most egregiously with Katara, mixing of storylines that don't make sense like in ep 5, and other unnecessary changes like not having Aang running away or him learning waterbending.

    I know some people weren't a huge fan of how they portrayed Roku, but i always thought he was definitely the more "warm" avatar (especially with Aang) compared to the three before him and I think it makes sense to portray him as a little more "fun" since Aang REALLY needed an Avatar to talk to that was like that in some sense. Maybe he's a bit too "goofy", but I liked that he was more approachable.

      I don't think the problem people had with him with that he was joking with Aang. The bigger problem is that he had only one scene in the entire season and him being a crucial mentor to Aang was taken away.

    I think it's wildly underrated how Zuko says, "Not after everything WE have been through!"
    He says, "compassion is a weakness," but just with that one word, he's saying more than he's letting on. And of course, Jee would see that as bolstering, because they don't hang out with this kid, he's not trying to befriend all of them, so they all think this is some bullshit babysitting assignment to watch a brash and emotional teenager being a teenager, and not watching a brash and emotional teenager trying to be a leader....without leading.

  • @rafaelmatos5851

    Since Roku doesn't have the same role as he does in the original show, they were able to portrait him as he is as a person. One can't forget that Roku, beyond his duty as an Avatar, was actually a cheerful person. Examples of that are his interaction with Sozin when they were young or when he made his airbending training at the Southern Air Temple. I can imagine that he would continue to have this more laid-back attitude when in comparisson to Kyoshi, even if balanced with the discipline and wisdom he gained from both his training and experiences.

    The development they gave to Iroh, Zuko and Ozai is by far the best change them made. Can't quite compare to the original, but this is still one of the best live action adaptations ever. I don't get why people are unhappy they didn't rehash the show to a tee. If they want to see that, just watch the original. You can't expect a cover to completely mimic the original.

    I love the 41st Division being Zuko's crew. It adds layers to the relationship Zuko has with them and it also addresses something I think the original show didn't get into. Like, in the OG show, Zuko opposed the general's plan and got punished for it but I don't think they ever confirmed whether or not the 41st Division was taken off the mission. For all we know the plan probably still went through and all those men died. But here, Zuko speaking out still had negative consequences but it also had positive consequences, as all those men were saved from a suicide mission. And that scene where Zuko's crew welcome's him back, brilliant scene! Aside from the "We're the 41st" line, but aside from that, brilliant!

    • @Cazammaf
      @Cazammaf 2 місяці тому +5

      What's wrong with that line? It makes sense because I'd be confused too if I was being told the story about how I almost unknowingly became a martyr for my country, only to end up serving the guy who I dislike, without realising he's the one who saved me. I'd say the same thing.

    • @abthedragon4921
      @abthedragon4921 2 місяці тому +2

      @@Cazammaf It's two fold:
      1. From an audience perspective it feels weird and heavy handed, especially if you payed attention to the backstory. We just learned that Zuko's crew is the 41st, we don't need a character to literally say it out loud less than a minute later.
      2. If they wanted to convey shock that Jee was feeling there were several better ways to do that. Instead of just saying "we're the 41st" he could have maybe said something like
      - He did that for us?
      - I-I had no idea..
      - So that's why we were taken off the mission?
      Or just so many other things. The line doesn't ruin the scene by any means but it's another one of several parts of the show where it feels like they're heavy handed with the dialogue instead of just letting a scene convey. something naturally.

    We get Zuko before the war council. Dallas did a good job at playing a younger version full of light and joy. I think Lt Jee is a substitute for the was the dude that Zuko almost had an agni kai with in the episode the storm. Remember him and the guy in the boat were about to fight before iron stopped it. We dont get Zuko dipping out after being chained up at the fire temple. And also we dont have Sokka and Katara here. Roku seems like a joyful grandpa here. He seems even more relaxed here. And they can figure out how to do that with the rest of the story because going to main story stuff from the past stuff is depressing. Also it is really telling that this was one of the better episodes and it was missing several of the main cast. That isnt an attack on sokka and katara tho because i actually think sokka is a really good sokka he just isnt fitting in the show right now (it was a bit of an attack on katara she is probably the worst part of the show for me at the minuet because of what she was in the original and the nothing she is in this )

    I feel/hope the 41st division will be important later on. I mean, in the cartoon, I never understood how Zuko can just become Fire Lord and be accepted as such by soldiers, palace officials, etc, after they served Ozai and Azula, a family that clearly had no love for Zuko and portrayed him as enemy of the Nation. Zuko, having already loyal fire Nation troops rooted in the Fire Nation when he rises to power could offer him a more secure reign. I know the comics explore that a bit, how Zuko's reign is "shaky" (esp The Promise) but the cartoon doesn't, and I feel like the LA will need to be more realistic on that one.
    As for Ozai, I think humanizing him more will also participate in building Aang's struggle more "sympathically" to the audience. Like, to me, the cartoon is perfect on that front, in the fact that despite Ozai being the biggest dirtbag in the universe, it doesn't change the fact that Aang's mercy is a choice that Aang makes for HIMSELF and not for Ozai. But so many people, to this day, shit on Aang/the ending of the cartoon for sparing Ozai "because he's such an iredeemable person anyway!" that the live action taking the opportunity to build more layers to Ozai is interesting as well.

  • @aprilshighfantasysoul5891

    I love the nuance to Ozai's character they're adding here. **SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 OF THE ANIMATED SHOW** In season 2, we learn that Ozai's punishment for telling his father to make him fire lord instead of Iroh was to know the loss of a child - while he didn't seem to believe that it would affect him as it did Iroh, I think his over-punishment of Zuko was a hold-over from that trauma his father inflicted on him - a similar trauma response Zuko has in the series: he over compensates for the perceived weakness others saw in him. By brutally punishing Zuko for speaking out against him (just as he would have been punished for speaking out against his own father), Ozai was trying to prove to himself that he wasn't 'weak' like Iroh and the pain of his children wouldn't affect him. Not only that, but he wanted to forge his children into the ideal that he thought he, himself, had achieved: one where they were 'strong' and could stand alone without breaking under the pressures of war (like Iroh did at the loss of his son) or harm done to a family member (Zuko held back and wouldn't hurt his father).
    I think the animated series glossed over the generational trauma of the royal family and kind of went the GOT Targaryen route where some are "just crazy and evil" - they touch on nurture a bit with Zuko being doted on by his mother and Iroh (the 'good' family members) while Azula was given more positive attention by her father (the 'bad' family member) but it doesn't really go into why her father is 'bad', he just is. Given all this, I hope we get a more fleshed out ending for Azula than *spoilers for season 3* her ending shot being chained to the ground screaming and crying. Showing even a shot of her after that breakdown being shown compassion in some capacity I think would strengthen the themes I thought the show was going for, and Aang upheld, that everyone deserves a chance to do better, we've just got to give them the opportunity.

      I like the additions to Ozai here too but I would say Ozai always has been evil he is power hungry and feels no sympathy or empathy for anyone,some people are just born like that.

      @@BananaGuy0 I strongly disagree - no one is just 'born evil' - that type of thinking is how you get really fascistic laws intending to 'seek out and remove' those people from society that really only succeed in eugenics and massive amounts of bigotry. Not to mention that a major theme of Avatar is that everyone deserves a chance to do better - hence why Aang is so against killing and always tries to talk his enemies down before using force. Monsters aren't born, they're made, and as we saw with Zuko and Iroh, they can be unmade

      @@aprilshighfantasysoul5891 Iroh and Zuko are different. Ozai is a straight up psychopath, those people exist. But I agree it is true that everyone deserves a second chance. The reality is though that some people do change and some don't.

    I dont like the direction they took wih many things in this show, specially with Roku considering how he was the previous Avatar, and yet they wnated to focus on Kyoshi instead, even tho Roku is a much better guide for Aang and also he has a direct correlation to the plot.

    • @Lothiril
      @Lothiril 2 місяці тому

      In s1 his only direct correlation was the warning of the comet. Which they didn't want to do here because of the actors aging, so for this part of the story Roku doesn't have much more to offer than Kyoshi. They still can explore the character better in season 3.

In this they never felt under threat most of the army were just standing around with there hands up “ready to fire bend” which just both served to look stupid and make it obvious that they couldn’t put in any effort to have them be a threat even in the original every soldier that they were out of range off when they were up high were throwing spears that had to be dodged it felt like an actual army not six stunt fighters and a bunch of extras in masks

      @@akumaakabane5276 You are definitely misremembering the dynamism of the original. It's important to take off the nostalgia glasses with this adaptation to judge it fairly. The fight was cool, the choreography was well constructed and the cg was not bad, it didn't even stick out to me more than any of the other cg. If you're concerned about them not having a literal army of stunt people (no production does) you should fund them for one next time. But practically every beat of this fight was shot for shot with the original. Goes to show that they will never be able to be good enough for some people.

As for the point of it’s nostalgia that’s stupid too coz I have loved one piece since I was a child there isn’t a show I could be more nostalgic for and ye they changed stuff but it was still good and they did a lot of the important bits justice this isn’t doing anything justice and the changes are sometimes baffling for instance not having aang run away from his responsibilities which was a major part of his character motivation and this show seems to want it to be part of his character motivation despite changing it so he didn’t run like I said some changes are just bad and baffling with no real excuse

    P.s. What I really need in my life is a story about a war Avatar, like closely after Wan dies, kind of like the war Doctor from Dr. Who. Someone who had to do terrible things for peace that isn't talked about very much in the Avatar line.
