Got this once very early game. At that stage it is decent for atleast for a short time. I kinda enjoy the attack style and the incentive to go into very short ranged combat. No matter how easily outdone it is, it will always have a special place in my heart.
The one time I ever used a chain knife was when I very first joined a friend's world (Pre Skeletron, Post EOC) and I needed a weapon. He didn't have very many good items, and that is how I became in possession of a chain knife. That just goes to show how throwaway it is.
One thing that would be cool, is if the drop rate was higher till the first chain knife dropped (or until you picked up one) and then return to the rare chance
I'm starting to think this thing is basically just a gag item. So many aspects of its design start to make sense when you analyze it from that perspective.
I remember the first time I played Terraria, I got the chain knife while I was exploring. I absolutely loved it, and it was such an interesting and fun melee weapon for a new player. It's not that powerful, sure, but it was to me. I really like this weapon because of that.
In Don't Dig Up, Chain Knife trades places with KO Cannon. A lot of the progression swaps will buff both weapon spots, and that happened here as well; the KO Cannon is slightly slower than Chain Knife, but with far better damage and slightly better range, it's actually functional. I got it in a skyblock run and used it as an alt weapon when I was out of mana for Diamond Staff for a while.
I think the main use is only to hold you over for you to get a better weapon, which would take about thirty seconds or someone falling into and then exploring a cave on their first playthrough.
Chain knife is a good knockback weapon. It was also one of the best ways to kill incoming bats before Swinging flags were introduced in 1.4. It definitely needs a Buff though (I think it needs much higher DPS).
There is 1 thing about this weapon you may have missed; in the getfixedboi world seed, it is buffed whopping 60+ base damage, making it well worth the grind in that seed alone. I got one, and It carried my all the way to queen bee.
I was about to tear you a new one on this, I remember a playthrough where I used the Chain Knife all the way through early pre-hardmode... Until you mentioned the abysmal droprate, and realized I must have been insanely lucky to receive one within the first few dozen bats I killed!
I love this sort of content. I always thought it would be interesting to rank all the items on a chart, with one axis being their average damage, and the other being its rarity or difficulty to be crafted.
despite its abysmal stats, this was like my favorite weapon in my first playthrough of terraria back on old gen console days. the chain knife will always reside in a special place in my heart
Imo weapons like this are meant to be used if you come across them without grinding for them and aren't intended for mainstream use, they're more for chill playthroughs or beginners where you just use what you find, which is nice when u want to have some variety instead of having to pick between the massively overused popular weapons, which i think makes playthroughs a lot more boring since it makes them repetitive
For me this weapon holds a special place in my heart it was one of the first weapons I got along with the bone sword back in 1.2 when I first discovered terraria 😭
The Chain knife, much Like the bat beater thingy, is a weapon that's Not designed to be activly relied on. It's something you randomly get with good luck and Then use For 2-3 days before you get smth better
i love the chain knife so much, i think in terms of style/design its so cool, i just wish it had like twice as much base damage, really even more for how inconsistent it is to obtain. should get more range too
I actually found a strange glitch with the chain knife, if you fire it straight down at the ground it makes some sort of forcefield around the player, especially around the head. Moving does mess it up a bit but it does still work.
You know what is a really cool idea that would make even this weapon really cool, the ability to pull enemies(including bosses) towards you. It would be amazing, even late game, for true melee builds.
i decided to make a flails run for myself after seeing a thumbnail for it. it went well, but I actually found the knife before any bosses, so i was able to try it against the eye of cthulhu, but the ball o hurt was clearly better. the only place i found use for it was defeating skeletron in time, as hitting the hands with a mace is far more difficult compared to the knife (I did this on master mode and the hands were simple to deal with this way)
Don't forget, if we're talking melee weapons cave and other bats have a chance to drop the significantly better Bar Bat. While granted it's drop chance is equally low, it's swing speed being very slow and a range leaving much to be desired it dose way more damage. Meaning even in the cave bats small drop pool the chain knife is out classed.
Should they add a recipe for it? Like chain+throwing knife? I see so many things that Terraria can change to make the game more balanced and convenient.
I remember when I got this weapon in early hardmode, mixed it up with the chain guillotines, and tried to use it against the twins. Needless to say that didn’t go well
I remember getting this on my first terraria play through, I was stuck on eye of cuthullu for a long time and this allowed me to get past him, my refusal to build arenas didn’t help with the inability to kill him
Chain knife should be totally reworked tbh. It would be cool if it worked like a combination of a regular flail and a whip, and throw more knives, so you can hold the mouse down, it'll spin around you a few times like a flail, every second or so it'll throw out another chain knife that starts spinning around you too and then after each knife has been out for a certain amount of time(a couple seconds) it will automatically swing out like a whip and then come back and disappear, to then be replaced by another
Don't know if this has been said or not. But in the upside down seed the chain knife is one of the weapons to get flipped in stats. Getting a generous boots to 70ish damage in those worlds
It's crazy because my very first playthrough I had it almost as soon as I started and to know know this is how I got it and the rate of rng, it was my favorite starter and I used it for a while
The only purpose this weapon would have is if it received some of the following improvements: - Buffed range and damage output to be comparable to the Mace and Enchanted boomerang - Increased drop chance from Cave Bats, or provided an alternative method of obtaining it. - Piercing cabability(2-3 enemies at the very least) - An upgrade or later use for the weapon, like needing it for a later recipe.
first time i found it i thought to myself "oh sweet! a grappling hook that deals damage" and then it didn't equip in the slot that weapon is one of the biggest dissapointments in all of terraria they should make it a damaging grappling hook like first timers would expect also because that'd be awesome and new
Chain Knife is one of the "Bonus" weapons, weapons that you don't intentionally go out of your way to get, but are nice to get, terragrim also falls into this category unless you like collecting things. Chain Knife is basically a much more forgiving version of the boomerangs, harpoons, and flails. In a class playthrough, it's a melee weapon, so options like the bows and shuriken wouldn't be available as well. If you compare weapons from one class to another, you're going to run in to a lot of situations where X weapon is outclassed by ranged weapon Y, because weapon X is the melee version of Y. This is most obvious with boomerangs, which were literally just made to give melee a ranged option, and none of them will perform as well as their ranged counterparts. To a lesser extent this also applies to whips, which act as a way for summoners to actually do something in a fight and encourage them to not just run away forever since their weapon is melee.
nothing in the game forces you to not use shurikens and grenades, that is just a extra challenge for no reason, according to leinfors, you are meant to use whatever you want to use, you are able to use minions with any class, you are able to use grenades early game as melee, think of it like dark souls's class system, if they wanted to lock you into a class, they would force you to choose a class at the start in the first place.
have you heard of the poison and venom staff, theyve been in the game ages and id never seen them until i got one from a random drop, it seems like a good pre mech option
"Most have weapons by the time the reach the cavern layers". As a veteran player, It has become a game to see how far I can get with literally no defense from enemies.
Recently I've started a new playthrough of Terraria and the chain knife dropped from the first cave bat I killed. This would've been amazing but I also happened to stumble upon an enchanted sword underground by chance beforehand lol
I count the Chain Knife as a true melee weapon as it has low range but its usefulness as a 'ranged' true melee weapon gives it some utility. Most ore swords have terrible range so it is more viable for early game bosses in true melee playthroughs. And the Terragrim is just as rare, if not rarer, then the chain knife, so I feel like allowing it makes the run a bit smoother
a few days ago i downloaded terraria and played for the first time. I went into my cave, got this knife in like three minutes, and thought nothing of it. I didn't know the rng gods "smiled" upon me lol
One of those cases of its drop chance being rollable too early so it had to be balanced in the event of the luckiest players getting it immediately. It's honestly not that bad though, better than most ore swords since it offers a somewhat safer range to fight at, and allows you to fight that safely without using up ammo.
I got it just recently without knowing the rarity, that thing saved my newbie ass while trying to cross the corruption. I'm super shocked to know it's rarity!
In my first playthrough I actually got the chain knife pre-boss wielding a katana. (I had unreal luck on that playthrough) and unironically tried using it on King Slime. Rest assured it didn't go well.
I remember finding the chain knife on accident back when it was added, and wondered why it wasn't a pre-hardmode item for being so weak. Now I'm wondering why it's not used in challenges more lol.
Actually in case of very early game weapons trident is surprisingly strong. And it has some utility in being able to move underwater. Granted it's a bit harder to find, but there were games where i found it earlier than spear for example
I still remember the fact I got this knife's upgrade, the Chain Guillotines, from my first Corrupt Mimic on a Calamity run, and went to town on some of the early HM bosses with it, Aqua Noodle included
Imo a good way to give this some use is to give it pierce (so it can shish kebab enemies), have it do more damage up close and lose some as it goes further (like 60 up close and then 10 at it's furthest range), and to buff it's range by alot. Also as a cool mechanic it could work like a boomerang and damage enemies twice when it comes back in. For such a rare item it's so bad.
This is the kind of weapon you don't grind for but are thankul you got it. I got it as a first drop from a cave bat and it carried me through the eye of cthulhu.
This is my first ever enemy dropped weapon I had when i played my first terraria world, from the first cave bat no less. And I have never gotten the weapon ever again
I'd buff it so it was slightly below the bat bat in stats at point blank range, as well as doubling the range so it becomes the early game long ranged flail rather than... whatever niche it fills now.
ive been lucky enough to get it early game a couple times in the past, and yea maybe it doesnt deal as much damage as the mace, but it has enough knockback to keep enemies away + isnt consumable, and since it deals so much damage up close its really helpful when youre exploring caves and stuff and need to keep enemies away. maybe its not so great against bosses, but against regular enemies its almost as good as starfury imo
Would be nice if this style of flail did higher damage the further away it hit to compensate for the reduced attack rate, and maybe even get a more significant damage bonus when hitting an enemy right at the end of its range.
Can't really value its use as a brain of Cthulhu stall weapon when the rotted fork exists. Even the rally is a better cavern layer drop than the chain knife
A good way to buff this weapon or at least give it some originality would be to buff its range to 16 blocks and make the weapon inflict a dps debuff on your target that deals 1/2 your damage to your last hit target as long as you remain in the weapon range area. Allowing you to freely switch weapons and keep dealing the dps while you use another "Melee" weapon.

this weapon has so much potential but it got shafted so bad.
even something like piercing and/or increased range would make this weapon so much better
I really like the chain knife's mechanics. It's just a shame that its drop rate and stats are so absurdly low.
4:20 nice
Imo weapons like this are meant to be used if you come across them without grinding for them and aren't intended for mainstream use, they're more for chill playthroughs or beginners where you just use what you find, which is nice when u want to have some variety instead of having to pick between the massively overused popular weapons, which i think makes playthroughs a lot more boring since it makes them repetitive
For me this weapon holds a special place in my heart it was one of the first weapons I got along with the bone sword back in 1.2 when I first discovered terraria 😭
I love getting the bone sword and bone pickaxe early. Such a game changer
For some reason, I remembered it as stronger and faster.
interesting video but a 4:20 min video during 4/20 is wonderful 😭😭
I use this weapon so little that this is one of the very few projectile textures that I straight-up did not recognize upon first glance
"The chain knife is a decent option for skeletron"
-Sockrteez in his combat wrench video (0:55)
Nobody can touch my chain knife…nobody…
uploaded on april 20 (4/20) and it's 4 minutes 20 seconds (4:20) long

Virgin chain knife vs chad chain Guillotines
The Chain knife, much Like the bat beater thingy, is a weapon that's Not designed to be activly relied on. It's something you randomly get with good luck and Then use For 2-3 days before you get smth better
i love the chain knife so much, i think in terms of style/design its so cool, i just wish it had like twice as much base damage, really even more for how inconsistent it is to obtain. should get more range too
I remember when used this weapon on my first ever playthrough, I felt like God while slaying the eye of chtulhu
It would be amazing, even late game, for true melee builds.
this thing carried me through a good little bit of my calamity world. thank you chain knife, you might be garbage, but you’re my garbage.
Chain Knife: Dad am i a disappointment?
Chain Guillotines: Yes
i decided to make a flails run for myself after seeing a thumbnail for it. it went well, but I actually found the knife before any bosses, so i was able to try it against the eye of cthulhu, but the ball o hurt was clearly better. the only place i found use for it was defeating skeletron in time, as hitting the hands with a mace is far more difficult compared to the knife (I did this on master mode and the hands were simple to deal with this way)
Don't forget, if we're talking melee weapons cave and other bats have a chance to drop the significantly better Bar Bat.
I feel like putting the chain knife in surface chests would be a very good change to its place in progression
Facts
I remember when I got this weapon in early hardmode, mixed it up with the chain guillotines, and tried to use it against the twins. Needless to say that didn’t go well
🤣
Lol
Your type of content is like short form tutorials or facts stretched to the longer form it's funny.
Video released on 420 id 420 seconds long. Respect 💪
I remember getting this on my first terraria play through, I was stuck on eye of cuthullu for a long time and this allowed me to get past him, my refusal to build arenas didn’t help with the inability to kill him
This grindy weapon becomes even bigger joke when Shroomarang exist that can also be upgraded to Trimarang
This weapon gets buffed in the remix seed right? Like it gets switched with the KO cannon
It's crazy because my very first playthrough I had it almost as soon as I started and to know know this is how I got it and the rate of rng, it was my favorite starter and I used it for a while
The only purpose this weapon would have is if it received some of the following improvements:
- Buffed range and damage output to be comparable to the Mace and Enchanted boomerang
- Increased drop chance from Cave Bats, or provided an alternative method of obtaining it.
- Piercing cabability(2-3 enemies at the very least)
- An upgrade or later use for the weapon, like needing it for a later recipe.
first time i found it i thought to myself "oh sweet! a grappling hook that deals damage"
and then it didn't equip in the slot
that weapon is one of the biggest dissapointments in all of terraria
they should make it a damaging grappling hook like first timers would expect
also because that'd be awesome and new
Chain Knife is one of the "Bonus" weapons, weapons that you don't intentionally go out of your way to get, but are nice to get, terragrim also falls into this category unless you like collecting things.
@@teiull9388 yeah, nothing forces you to using one class.
It's just far more interesting if you do.
have you heard of the poison and venom staff, theyve been in the game ages and id never seen them until i got one from a random drop, it seems like a good pre mech option
Are they that rare? I got like 3 when i was building right next to a spider nest.
It's become kinda iconic in it's own right. For all of those factors combined.
I like how direct and informative your videos are. you dont sugarcoat and pretend this kind of weapons have real uses
"Most have weapons by the time the reach the cavern layers". As a veteran player, It has become a game to see how far I can get with literally no defense from enemies.
speaking of the mace, i found 8 of them (5 in a row) early in my playthrough the other day. i even found one inside an ivy chest
NGL, I get this item so frequently on accident that I sometimes forget it's rare
Flaming mace held me for way longer then it should have.
One of those cases of its drop chance being rollable too early so it had to be balanced in the event of the luckiest players getting it immediately.
It's honestly not that bad though, better than most ore swords since it offers a somewhat safer range to fight at, and allows you to fight that safely without using up ammo.
I swear I always get this on every single playthrough, and yet it takes me like 50 hours to get the nimbus rod
to be fair, if you get it within your first few bat kills of the game it can help with the difficulty cliff face that is early pre hardmode
I got it just recently without knowing the rarity, that thing saved my newbie ass while trying to cross the corruption. I'm super shocked to know it's rarity!
Cant believe when i was little, i got it in 2 playthroughs back to back. When i got it, it was at the stage of being useful.
In my first playthrough I actually got the chain knife pre-boss wielding a katana. (I had unreal luck on that playthrough) and unironically tried using it on King Slime. Rest assured it didn't go well.
When I've been playing as warrior that weapon dropped after second kill
I remember finding the chain knife on accident back when it was added, and wondered why it wasn't a pre-hardmode item for being so weak.
Now I'm wondering why it's not used in challenges more lol.
I remember how on my very first Terraria playthrough I got the chain knife and loved it, granted, I was playing on classic mode.
Ddu seed makes it switch with ko cannon but getting it in a normal world then going to remix seed is insane
It's by far one of the best early hardmode weapons. If all your hits do 1 damage, they may well be fast and ranged.
See i knew people like the weapon and it's not shity
Imo a good way to give this some use is to give it pierce (so it can shish kebab enemies), have it do more damage up close and lose some as it goes further (like 60 up close and then 10 at it's furthest range), and to buff it's range by alot. Also as a cool mechanic it could work like a boomerang and damage enemies twice when it comes back in. For such a rare item it's so bad.
It's one of these weapons you'll only ever use if you get them but you don't farm for them
its fun how he made the video 4 minutes and 20 seconds on 4:20 day. keep it up bro
“I don’t care who the IRS sends, I’m not using Maces.”
Look how charming the chain knife is. Admit it.
It still somehow drops before the depth meter that I need
Can't really value its use as a brain of Cthulhu stall weapon when the rotted fork exists. Even the rally is a better cavern layer drop than the chain knife
so basically, if it were in a brown chest or something like the spear it'd actually be a pretty cool find
Doing a launched flails only run rn and pre hardmode with just CK was hellish
