I've seen Johnny many times over the years, the first time was in April of 1972. I live in central Florida, and it seems that many bands would start their Spring tours here. Johnny Winter, Bob Seger, and The J. Geils Band would usually play at least 2 or 3 times a year, and I would go to every show I could.
The last time I saw Johnny was February 15th, 2013. There was a meet and greet before the show at a record store just down the street from where I live. I brought a 40+-year-old concert tee for him to autograph. For most of his autographs, he kept his head down, signed it, and on to the next one.
When I laid that ratty old shirt I had worn for years in front of him, he lifted his head, just enough for me to see him smile from under his cowboy hat. I think he knew I was a lifelong fan. I reached out and we shook hands, all I could think of to say was "Thanks". It was the one time in my life that I wished I was the last one in line.

@ FRANK BURNSONE hello Frank. Was that show possibly when Johnny played at the Valkaria airport? When I heard about that show I couldn't believe someone as important an great as Johnny would have to play a place like that! Fast foward a bit an Johnny an Edgar were supposed to play together at the King center but sadly before that date mr Johnny had already passed. I had fully planned to see what would have been a really historic show....R I P Mr Winter.

Great interview! I play in a local surf/Ventures cover band called "The Dentures" , and a year before Mr Winter passed away, I was fortunate to meet Johnny and the band backstage at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA - and my fondest memory was introducing myself to Johnny as the guitarist for "The Dentures" a "The Ventures" cover band with my band's business card which I handed to Johnny , which had a duplicate of The Ventures iconic font and logo, just changed V to D , and Johnny and the band instantly began laughing hysterically !

    Just subscribed!
Been a big Johnny fan for years. When I was a kid, I was a big Jimi Hendrix fan. My buddies older hippie brother, said dude, you’ve got to hear this guy name Johnny Winter.
It was Johnny winter and live, when I heard him scream rock ‘n’ roll I was hooked for life.
Seen him numerous times over the years, especially in the early mid 80s when he was a blues monster. When he made his comeback I went to see him every time he was in the area.
I have a Music man 4x10 I brought to get him to sign. The roadies tried to take on the bus it because they thought it was Johnny’s.
They let me take it on the bus Johnny signed it. I still have it, and I always will.
Thank you for talking about my blues guitar hero!

Johnny Winter I saw 3 times .got a late start in '87, but he was still lightning fast, and after some reefer, his riffs were soaring thru my head the rest of the nite. the next 2 times he just didn't have it anymore the speed, the growling voice, were gone. his slide playing tho, was still showing signs of his old brilliance, tho by this time he really didn't seem well. he was sitting down like Howlin' Wolf would. he was one of the best EVER. I remember once Ritchie Blackmore implied that people made " too much of a fuss over Stevie Ray, (paraphrasing) tho he was very intense, and certainly not w/ out talent. while another American, Johnny Winter, doesn't get his due for being one of the World's best blues players." I hope I did the quote justice, as the leader of 'Deep Purple' knew a little bit about blues guitar playing.

This is such a great interview. The first time I saw Johnny was at MSG for the Still Alive and Well Tour, probably around 1973 and he was unbelievable. In the early 80s I worked at a couple of those Guitar Shows you mentioned at the MSG Felt Forum. At one of them I was set up right across from your display, met you and played your guitars. I do remember at one of those shows there was a great panel discussion with Johnny, Al DiMeola, Les Paul, Larry Coryell and Steve Lynch. Johnny played slide and was in top form.

Wow .I found Johnny around 1979 when I was searching for slide blues because of Kim Simmonds. He's been a removed mentor. Like my hero ( I don't have many) i went down the dirt road. I finally got to see him in @ 2012-14 in a 100 seat bar in a little town in 0ntario. His rv parked outside he wobbles in and I was worried he was too far gone. too my delight it was everything I had waited for and more. At that time I was 12 years on methadone. Now 23 on maintenance I will be clean for the first time in 48 yrs by end of this year 2024.. I'll be 62. My plan is to plan is to bring the gifts of my hero's Johnny and Rev Gary Davis to new disciple's so this spirit will never pass . The blues is in your soul, not in what consume. In fact most of what we consume will eventually consume us! This was a fuck of a podcast . Right down my alley. I had a great laugh as I realized you were Dean. Were have I been?

I’ve met Johnny three times in my life. First time as a thirteen year old at the Woodstock Arts & Music Festival. I had no idea what I was listening to and I was totally fascinated. Johnny gave me one of his slides. Still have it.
Two years later we started concerts to finance a youth project. We had Canned Heat, Ten Years After, Santana and Sly and the Family Stone on stage. But the first artist we had from the Woodstock crew was Johnny. He already was addicted. But he still made it look cool.
Fast forward to some years before he died. I saw him play in front of a half filled venue. He played well. And I was still fascinated about his playing, even though I didn‘t understand his choice of amps. I asked his then bass player Jon about meeting him. He said „no problem - but Johnny needs to prepare himself.“
I have never seen a sadder sight in my life. Johnny was still „preparing himself“. He even excused himself, saying „I need this before and after a concert to keep going“ or something along this line. The autograph I asked him for was sharp, but his eyes were broken.
Honestly, I was happy to flee the room after talking to him, and I prayed for his wellbeing.
Lesson for me: Never ever think about drugs! Let music be your drug. Always. 💪😎🎸

Johnny played the Hondo Lazer, the black headless guitar, from 84 to 87, and played his white Erlewine Lazer from 88 to 2009(?) until that guitar was stolen from the stage in Boston while Johnny was playing his encore on his Firebird
The headless Lazers were designed by Mark Erlewine, not by his famous relative Dan.
The Hondo Lazers are Asian, the Erlewine Lazers are American made.
Jeff Mallard is fucking strong. Saw him carry the Johnny's MusicMan amp with ease. That amp is heavy. Jeff was very friendly, he helped me to get my Lazer signed by Johnny.

Great show. Interesting insight to a legend. I saw Johnny many years ago in Toronto, Canada, at a baseball stadium. Ramones, Nazareth, Johnny Winter, Ted Nugent and Aerosmith. I really don't like the Ramones. First thing I saw was an apple core flying past targeting the band. Then all kinds of stuff were thrown towards the stage. Joey remained onstage frozen in position as the rest evacuated the stage. Someone came and helped get him off the stage. I actually felt bad for the band, who were used to playing in small clubs, being inappropriately booked on a serious heavy rock ticket to play in front of an audience that never really stomached the music industry pushing punk onto the airwaves. Well, Johnny Winter was amazing. I'm gladI was able to see him in top form. The rest of the bands put on great sets. Unfortunately the Ramones were nothing more than a vehicle to amp up the crowd. This was sometime in the late 70's.
I saw Johnny many, many years later at a small venue in St Petersburg, Fl. Unfortunately he had another guitarist with him who played most of the leads. He was good but not Johnny. Johnny did break out for the final 2 songs. Out back he signed our stubs. He was in a shitty little camper. All I could think was THIS IS JOHNNY WINTER, ONE OF THE BEST. HE'S A LEGEND. THIS ISN'T RIGHT. I left feeling depressed over that. I saw him again which was probably a few years later at the WANEE Festival in Florida. There were more than 10,000 people attending. I believe he was doing much better health wise and acknowledged the numbers there watching and listening. He played a really good show that night. He passed shortly thereafter.
I love Jonny Winter. Thanks for a great retrospective

I’m also an obsessed Winter freak. And a reverse Firebird lover. I recently found out his actual height. I was shocked. It seems Dean was under the impression he was tall just as I was….. he wasn’t.He was 5’7”. I was stunned and it somehow changed my thoughts of him. After I read that I went back and looked at pictures and it totally made sense. Look at how big the Firebird is compared to his size. It’s really big on him. Oddly, that’s an easy way to estimate the height of any guitar player. I’ve done that often thru the years. I think my love of Winter and his look and his playing were so impactful I mentally projected him too be a very tall guy. Sorry to break Deans thoughts of Winter being a giant as mine were recently. But….. his image and playing are still gigantic, even if he wasn’t. Rock n Roll!!!!

I lived down the street from Jeff Mallard in Misson Viejo Jeff used to ride his Laguna 100 BMX bike and jump over a bike. I remember him on the School bus in Jr. High School at Laguna Hills talking about being in the Music Industry someday. He had his Guitar on the bus. Peter Frampton never got into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame for all the amazing work he has done. Kid Rock had to bug the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame to induct Bob Seiger into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame but you won't induct Peter Frampton. Steve Miller was upset because they
were not going to let his wife come to the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. They said he would have to pay for another ticket I think is wrong. I think it is wrong how they induct Dolly Parton into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame and JAY Z and others. That whole Industry is a Shit Show. They don't show great artists. Now you have Swifty Ono. She has gotten so big and popular but I think it has to do more about Politics. The Music Industry has gone in the toilet. Eric Sardinas lives next door to Walter Trout who is another great Blues Guitar player. When Eric
Sardinas plays Guitar wearing his leather he never sweats. My friend saw him in a window in Fullerton playing at Stubricks Restaurant. It is Cool to see Jeff Mallard got a Cool dream job/gig. As a Harmonica player. I would rather be making music in the studio than doing that but it would be fun hanging out with artists like Johnny Winter Peter Frampton Eric Sardinas who play real Music. Johnny Winter is one of my favorites and Edger Winter Muddy Waters Jimi Hendrix Robben Ford Walter Trout Joe Bonamassa and the whole Blues scene. Here is a Great
video called Michael McDonald Hot Live. Live in Japan '83 with Edger Winter Robben Ford Wellie Weeks and some other artists. Robben Ford has some of the best Guitar solos EVER!!!! The Rum Soaked Raisin Band opened up for Michael Shanker many times and UFO Triump Jefferson Starship. They had fun playing with Michael Shanker. The Band broke up when the singer passed away. They were a great band. This is the Rum Soaked Raisins Band. Rum Soaked Raisins- "Under The Gun"

Johnny was never band director for B.J. Thomas. The book Raisin Cain woulda surely mentioned it.

Yeah, thos neo mags are A LOT stronger than any Alnico or ceramic mags. Maybe one on the bottom with a steel slug on top would be a good idea.

I've heard he was referring to Rory, but I've also heard he said Larry Coryell, and also Mike Bloomfield. I do tend to believe it was Gallagher, though. He also spoke highly of both Billy Gibbons, calling him his favorite guitar player, and Terry Kath.

I've also heard Phil Keaggy. Which I took to be the real story as he was pretty uniquely special.
That should be a meme now, insert "......" guitarists name.

49:23 I'm not sure which way he means it here, but "The Brown M&M thing" is actually a brilliant safety device, not the work of a petulant brat. I'm cribbing from David Lee Roth's autobiography here. If the No Brown M&M deal from the rider was missed, what else was not provided to spec? Like electric and capacity and fire regs and everything else required to put on a good, safe show.
