    The GM 5.3 and 6.0 are well known for this clicking (usually caused by clogged lifters even on engines that were babied from day one) the piston slap is an issue with the pistons rocking because of the different metal types used in the 5.3 and 6.0 once warmed up it fades as the pistons expand and fit the bores better over time the clicking will last longer and sometimes get more prominent (ive herd these engines sound like diesels and still run like champs) like alot of newer GM engines these are very sensitive to coaking (cooking oil in some spots) so doing oil changes at shorter intervals may help with this issue (this info is based of the 1000 truck fleet i service regularly and other customers vehicles equipped with said engines

    There is no additive that can cure piston slap, and there never will be. Piston slap means the cylinder is larger than the piston and the piston has play side to side. Unless "seafoam" can put the metal back in the cylinder, that isn't what fixed it, or it wasn't piston slap.

    seam foam only cleans out carbon build up, def doesn't help quiet the problem down, the only reason it quieted down was because you took it for a drive and allowed the engine to heat up, therefor the piston expanded (because aluminum expands when warm) and BOOM no more piston slap

    I had the same problem on my 06 crew cab Z71. I tried all the motor flushes that I seen on previous UA-cam channels. It’s seem to go away just a little bit but would come back it got louder and louder. After doing tons of research and learning about the GM piston slap. It is due to the cast iron block and the oversize skirts on the Pistons that will tap until the truck is heated up. This was not the case in my truck. I ended up calling and putting new LS seven a listers new lift her tray and new pushrods. I have drove it now for over 40,000 miles and zero sound. I also noticed before I done the work on it my all pressure would hardly get up to 40 pounds only if I was deep into the gas pedal. Now since the works been done I can barely tap it in my old gauge will get up over 40 every time I’m dealing with a front differential problem now after the truck being lifted. Also the slapping under the dash is the intermediate steering shaft had to change that as well. That should have been covered under GM as well. Seems they are only building for looks now not durability and sound lol

    Seafoam works. Period. For the right applications, anyhow...
    I never believed in any "mechanic in a can" stuff until I saw it work.
    We have used it in several industrial engines (Caterpillar G3306, G379, G398). We had serious crankcase venting issues on the G398. The seafoam freed up the rings enough that the crankcase vapor venting was back at an acceptable level.
    We have also used it to free up sticking valves in the G3306 and G379. The valves were sticking bad enough the units were shutting down manifold vacuum safeties and routinely backfiring. They would not reliably carry load.
    Now buying enough Seafoam for a 100 gallon oil sump is kind of expensive, but way cheaper than a head swap or pulling pistons and liners. It has bought us time to plan outages. It works.

    yea we see that alot in my dealership throw some top engine cleaner in it and it goes away, theres a bulletin that blames carbon building up on the sides of the pistons or in the combustion chamber it causes slight spark knock at idle or the noise you hear is the carbon breaking up, top tier fuel would probably help too

    that noise is a collapsed lifter that will eventually lift when you get 200 degrees or so.
    any 2-weight oil will do that, fix the lifter for a short while, but it will stick when it gets cold again. using STP oil treatment will also make a lifter shut up long enough to sell the car.

    • @mrpotatoheadracing
      @mrpotatoheadracing 9 років тому +18

      Piston rings have nothing to do with piston slap. Piston slap is the piston itself moving in the cylinder. I've heard it in just about all years, and not limited to GM. Toyota 3.5 is also notorious for this. It's a result of short piston skirts which reduces weight and drag, but lets the piston rock in the cylinder until it expands as it warms up. It's harmless.......

I was running synthetic 5 w 30 & now have begun to add STP oil treatment & full synthetic 5 w 30. it's helped some but that knock at cold tho....Grrrrrrrr. I run 93 octane. I don't know bud. just figured I'd ask. My ears always on the ground listening for knowledge so if ya git a chance, thanks for any advice in advance.

      Guess that's why most GM v8 engines have less bearing wear. Less rotating weight on the bearings. Lot of different factors there. If they would have put a better lifter in them they would be almost bulletproof. As long as you keep the oil changed it will last. I think the newer VVT engines are having oil consumption problems from day one.

    Seafoam never cured anything for me, and it sure didn't cure your "piston slap" cause that was not piston slap

  • @lilreh24

    U can't fix a piston slap with any liquid. Piston slap is a loud knock and will go away once vehicle is warmed up.

    Piston skirt*

  • @strikeforce4581
    @strikeforce4581 10 років тому +1

    thats not piston slap thats most likely a lifter if piston slap was happening ur bearing shot on your crank what that prohibites is lash/play and your connecting rod is moving and scraping the side of your cylinder or you heads been grounded down and your pistons hiting your valves.

    • @greatestskills7447
      @greatestskills7447 10 років тому +6

      what the heck are u talking about?? If pistons hit the valves motor will no longer run. The rods never hit the side of a cylinder. Not without putting a big hole in the block Thats called catastrophic engine failure.

    • @strikeforce4581
      @strikeforce4581 10 років тому +1

      you can still run with piston slap but its vary hard on your motor. you can run with a rob knocking but you'd hear it. go to a durby and you'll hear rod knocking from at least one at some point but 7 out of 10 times the motor will lock first. as for the valves being bent thats under full force but you can run a motor with slightly bent valves.

      strikeforce4 piston slap doesn’t mean anything bad. These motors do it all the time.

    So between the piston slap of the chevys and the spark plug issues with the ford i'd say they are both junk. But i would lean toward getting the ford.

    and the Seafoam is petroleum baded so it probably cleaned the gum and varnish from the lifters and they are pumping up fully now. You gonna trust your vehicle to a 3 dollar piece of crap? SMH.

  • @TheKillmypet

    This is funny. I came across this on accident. However piston slap means you unfortunately got a block that has piston slap. It will wear out the block faster than other 6.0l That do not have this reciprocating disorder. Their are blogs on this. Sorry dude. By the way I have a 2000 chevy ls 6.0l silverado with 175,000 miles and no such knock. Although I clean my valve rockers now and again.

      cuz it actually has shown to work. you put this product in your gas tank and it goes through your lines into your injectors, cleans your injectors and intake manifold. this product makes your engine run more efficient. although a real engine rebuild is a whole lot better
