Who's your handsome friend Kim?
You have a beautiful soothing voice. Thank you for your posts.
I can see your hot weather tips really work
The reason why I love watching your channel is because I can totally relate to your weather. We have almost the same one here in the Philippines. I had successful harvests with my lettuce in the past, this year is a little bit challenging.
I love watching your videos and learn from your ideas ...but the best is that I get to see your beautiful dog. Thank you for involving him in your videos...makes it a family affair.
Love it very simple...the idea of the white sheet ..wow now gotta try this because here in the Western part of Fiji is known of its HOT weather...so thank you again for your beautiful tips
Thank you for your tips! I like the way you made the videos, very simple and motivating!
Thank you CaliKim for these tips. Nothing like beautiful tips from a beautiful person.
Thank you so much for sharing! I have such a hard time growing lettuce in the heat of Florida. Our heat index has been up to a hundred and a hundred and ten degrees lately so my lettuce is in pots in my lanai. Lol. I'm going to start growing it in the shade under a big oak tree I have that gets just in between sunlight very briefly. You gave me the confidence that it will probably do good there and I'm actually going out right now to go plant it. 😊Just wanted to make sure it was going to survive out there. Thanks so much for the tips I love watching your channel. Even though I have been gardening for over 6 years now with many different kinds of plants, there are always problems with the heat of the summer here. I can't wait for the cool weather to come in soon as we are just struggling with this heat all around!
I love the shading idea!
Good tips. I live in semi-desert where it gets quite hot in the summer . I usually plant lettuce in the shade of taller plants in my raised beds. It is helpful to give lettuce, beets and radish a "spritz" of cold water during the heat of the day.
Thank you, you just now helped me save my lettuce plants today
Thank you for so many super useful tips Kim! Growing food in the middle of the DC is challenging and I really appreciate your thorough thoughts on reasons and techniques. Big cheers!
And cheers to you, Fredric! Thanks so much for watching and for the very encouraging comment that motivates me to keep making videos! Have a great day!
I try to utilize my small container trees to shade certain plants or to provide filtered sun. Keep the videos coming, much to learn.
Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the tips … much appreciated
Some good hot weather tips for growing lettuce. I especially like re-purposing of that bed sheet. That would work well for those of us in northern climates to use against an early or late frost. Thanks for sharing, CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY
You are welcome, Jim. I try to use what I already have whenever I can. Glad it was helpful to you. It should work great to protect from a light frost as well - great idea!
Great tips, as always, Kim! I'm going to use your shade cloth idea this summer for sure. Happy mother's day!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Great tips, Kim. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!
Thanks you so much! And thanks for watching!
thank you. i've just started gardening and my lettuce has shot right up tall. Now i know what i did wrong and what i can do next time. Thanks!
Happy Mothers Day Kim-great information, as always
Thanks, Russell - glad you stopped by to watch!
Cool tips Kim! Thank you for sharing.
You are welcome - thanks for watching!
Great tips thank you!
Awesome idea
Thanks for showing those 3 great tips on growing lettuce in hot weather.
I have struggled with fresh lettuce in the Arkansas summer heat, everything bolts way to fast.
#lettucetips #growlettuce #gardeningtips
I feel your pain - these tips help, but I'm always fighting the heat with my lettuce!
Fascinating concept !
really great video kim! I enjoyed this video, I would HIGHLY recommend growing romain lettuce though, It is very heat tolerant, and although Michigan is a far cry from So Cal, we can grow it almost year around, so I figure it might do you well too. Btw - I love that homemade shade cloth. Very handy, and super effective!
Will be getting some romaine going soon - its a fabulous green! Thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully my greens will survive this next week in the heat.
I have the exact same pot, but I'm in Miami! How funny I got 2 of them at the thrift store. I grow a ponderosa lemon tree in it and this year I have my 1st lemon! I'll try lettuce in the other one, thanks for the tips ;)
Thanks for the Tips! I will definitely use them with my lettuce in my garden :)
Great job
I'm fairly lucking in Prince Edward Island, Canada, but even I get lettuce that bolts. I try for two lettuce seasons. Up until mid late june and I start my fall lettuce about now Aug 14th
v well. good idea for cultivation in beds .
Great tips! Our super freezing nights are about over so I'm getting ready to plant some lettuce for the first time.
Those first greens will taste so great! Happy for you that it is warming up!
Thanks for these tips. Here in Louisiana it definitely gets scorching hot, so i've only been planting heat-tolerant plants haha. Oh two of my eggplants seeds sprouted :D YAY so i hope i'll see more sprouts in days to come
Only tried peat pods once. Didn't work for me. I believe I kept them too moist in the tray. Also, do not care for the recycled cardboard looking pots. They seem ok, when you buy your transplants in them, they do well. But as for purchasing them and using them for sprouting seeds, I've noticed almost zero percent germination, despite attempting to keep them moist my misting multiple times daily. We get good success with direct sewing, and plastic seed starting kits. I'm not sure what you're doing different, but it's working. You GO garden-girl.
Very helpful.. Thanks a lot
Hi thought i would share my romaine lettuce experience with you read carefully, I have planted lettuce seed on Aug 1 before, plant a row of seeds with 7-8 inch spacing no more or less, cover the seeds with card board for 3 to 4 days to save the moisture and ultimately the seeds from the heat of the sun then uncover after 4 days. add 1 to 2 inches of wood chips along the row for moisture conservation and do not harvest more than one leaf per day untill 6-8 weeks later when you harvest the whole head, do not wait more than 8 weeks or else your producing a seed stalk.
Fishe Kiss Great tips, here, thx for sharing your method! Sounds like you have found a way that really works for you. Appreciate you watching!
Another great video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Love your videos! You are always very helpful!
Thanks so much! Appreciate you stopping by!
Thanks for the wise tips : D
Great tips Kim. I've got a area shaded by other bushes that might be perfect for this. I guess I'll have to try it out. Thanks a bunch!
Good luck with your shady area! Its always nice to have a few spots like this around the yard!
Thanks.
great tips kim .. might have to grow some lettuce on the roof garden.. thanks.
awesome! Your garden sounds wonderfully unique!
Thank you
Great tips, Kim! I'm impressed that you can grow lettuce in that heat. :D
Thanks, Patrick! Lets hope I don't forget to shade it and it bolts sky high! Thanks for watching!
Hey I notice you leave the three plants together in the pods when planting? What is your reason for not separating them? arent they spaced too close?
What a sweetie of a doggie...
Good tips. I do the same things. This year I am trying them in a wicking container as well in the hopes that the constant water supply will delay bolting.
Great idea - I'm sure that will be very effective as well!
Great tips there Kim. I often plant lettuce under the shade of a fruit tree or amongst Silverbeet which grows much taller. Coriander or cilantro also does well in the shade of a tree.
Thanks, great suggestions. I always have trouble with my cilantro bolting as well.
Great Tips! Thanks I appreciate them!
Thanks, Larry! I enjoy watching your channel to - you've got some great info there!
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY
Thanks!
I planted mine in the shade and around some other taller plants and some under my peach tree. Wanted to see how well it would do this year planted like that. Love how you've done it!
Sounds like a great idea! Let me know how it goes!
Will Do!
Card board makes a good shade also. At least it worked good when I tied it.
I didn't know daisies get that large! Great tips on growing lettuce and just in time for me too. My starts are still very small, so I'm hoping they will catch up - but the weather is too. I'll definitely be growing in containers so I can move it around!
They were in a wildflower daisy mix I planted a few years ago, and just keep coming up year after year. Glad your starts are off to a good start! When do you plant outside?
Hi Kim! I've just stumbled on your videos: and I have to tell you: you are like my Doppelganger on the West Coast!!! LOL (I'm in Maine :-)
Our summers tend to be a bit cooler than yours...but we do get higher temps in the summers now (during the past several years)...and yeah: lettuce can be a bit tricky to grow then. I was going to suggest the "sheet".....and was so delighted when you did exactly that. I also use the beige cloth "painter's drop cloths". They are fairly cheap....sturdier than sheets...last a long time....and hold up to washing well, if need be. They are also good to use in a similar manner when chillier evenings start coming...and frost season starts at night in (usually) September.
I LOVE having fresh salad veggie and herbs growing BOTH in the garden, and in pots on the patio that I can move inside when autumn arrives. Your idea to use a patio umbrella is a GREAT idea as well!!
~ RED ☮♥♫
hi! Kim nice video.. i usually water the plants in the middle of the day and use wood chips to cover the base of the plant it helps too..
great suggestions, thanks!
Good tips
Great video. I may try to grow some Red Russian Kale this summer here in Florida to see how it does in the shade. I'm already using shade cloth, but the humidity at 100% here seems to really suck the life out of the plants. Thanks again for sharing your tips and tricks. Hopefully you can get a few great harvest with no bolting
Wow, I can't imagine the heat we are having now with that kind of humidity! Glad the tips are helpful and good luck with your kale. I've never planted Red Russian, but kale seems to do well in hot and cold weather. Thanks for watching!
very nice
Good tips.
Thanks!
It sure is a great tip or tips. I cover mine with shade cloth.
Great, Mary! This really does help, doesn't it?
Cali, lettuce in Prince Edward Island is going well, nice and cool
Nice video
Thank you for the tip,i live in Nevada y i have my garden also but with the hot weather is very hard so i am going to try the way your did, thank you i hope is not to late we are now in July.
Sandra Citelly It's hard even with shade to get lettuce in the kind of heat you have there in Nevada. I will be posting a video later this week with another growing lettuce in the heat tip, stay tuned, Sandra!
I will,thank you.
How can you retain the seeds and store? Thanks for the hot weather tips.
Hola!! Can you give an update on the passion fruit vine? I'm in Georgia north of Atlanta with my first plant.
Good job!!
rick zanetel Thanks, Rick! Are you growing lettuce?
nice to read from you,yet i would be glad if you can help me over within hydro fertilizers if though both lettuce and cilantro, moreover i wanted to divide my greenhouse in 2 parts, for lettuce and cilantro,
Thank you
Heavy mulching helps in our desert climate.
My little plants are ready to move into thier new homes for transplant. I was really worried about my lettuce bc it gets very hot and humid here, however when I viewed this video it relieved my fears, Thank You for making this video on lettuce and kale Calikim! What was the black screen thingy around the your Lil lettuce garden and where can I get it? Thanks again for these timely tips!
Nice one Kim... Old sheets would have to be cheaper than shade cloth..
Cheers..
You got that right, Rob!
Very interesting tips. Here in my zone 5 garden, we have scorching hot days and I can't imagine how I can find a place for my pots to find a cool spot. Still....I appreciate the tips!
+Molly Spradley Molly, I feel your pain, we get super hot summers here in So Cal as well. I've found that if I don't have a shady spot, I can create one with a few stakes and an old sheet. It does extend the life of my lettuce, really helps. Good luck and thanks for watching!
I bought some sailcloth from amazon and costco, that might get the call.
Great tips, thanks for sharing! We are having 100+ days here in New Mexico.
Wow, how do you keep your lettuce alive in that kind of heat? Any varieties that you like that are heat tolerant?
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY
Well I mentioned growing some lettuce to my wife but she said it was to hot here for it. However, I think if we provided some filtered light/shade that they might do okay. I'll let ya know how they do if we try it.
PintoBlades
yes, keep me posted! The shade cover is working well for me here, but it hasn't gotten to terribly hot yet this month. We'll see how the greens hold up in 100 + temps! Good luck to you!
Can you keep lettuce covered with a cloche or cloth of some sort throughout the whole summer that still allows light to come through?
You might try dripping some water on the bed sheet not much just enough to cool things down, I noticed the drip system in the pot on the porch.
I'm breaking out in a sweat!
Came for the lettuce. Stayed for the 😛
Great video I need help last year my lettuce got bitter and bolted. They only thing that I was disappointed in my first year garden. This year I will definitely use shade cloth of some type got my irrigation system on the way. All my stuff is in the ground and raised bed with good soil. Looks amazing compared to my hodge lodge from last year.
automatic irrigation really is key. That changed everything for me! Hopefully you have better luck with your greens this season - hopefully these tips will help! Thanks for watching!
I'm hoping to have better luck with my lettuce this summer. I heard that if i pick the smaller leafs that should help with it not being so bitter.
+Benja's Uber 1337 Hobby Yes, the smaller leaves are sweeter. But it does tend to get bitter with the heat.
Oh ok. Jt bear told me i should try growing more kale he says it is much more frost and heat tolerant. I have i think 2 new varieties of kale this year so i guess i will be trying those out :) Can't wait!
Hey CaliKim 😊
Great video.. I love your smart pots ..
Blessing 👩🌾

I especially liked your tip about planting in the shade of other plants. It's just a prime example of using our natural resources from God. Well done!
#GardenTips #GardeningTips #Lettuce
Seriously *****? Very cool. I didn't know that either man. Yeah, I've got a UA-cam channel with a lot of gardening stuff up on it and I'm starting a blog and such. :-P What all do you like to grow?
***** Thanks, Wayne! Let me know any ideas you have for growing lettuce - trying to improve my lettuce crop. Hot, dry, windy weather this year has made it a challenge. Thanks for stopping by!
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY your garden (s) are looking really good. Thank You for the tips on growing Lettuce. Did you and your family make the retaining wall you are sitting on at the end of the video. I really like that area.
Deana Lynn Allen Rogers
Thanks, Deana - yes we did put in the retaining wall ourselves. It was an unusuable slope before, and now it is my garden on either side and the retaining walls with grass in the middle. We get so much more use out of it now!
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY You are welcome. Might talk my brother maybe doing a mini one at his home is AZ. He is wanting me to help him landscape his back yard sense it is just dirt, and teach them to garden I cannot wait to get the money to get moved there.
Hi Cali Kim. I have lettuce growing but when I go to pull leaves off, at the stock where it grows milky white fluid stuff comes out dripping. do you know what it is?
thanks
God bless you and your day. God bless your family with Joy, Truth His Peace and His grace
i am searching if though you do have cilantro plantation.
Thanks
I never knew why my lettuce always went to seed
I thought it just was what was
kim is there any hope for lettuce to grow when its over 100 degrees?
How long into the summer are you able to harvest lettuce in California?
CaliKim you are beautiful!
How did you repair your old tomato cages that have come apart on the hoop. I have some older cages and I’d hate to get rid of them...💕🌵💕
How about some mechanics wire?
gorgeous
+Shivneil Janardan Thank you, Shivneil. Are you growing a garden? Appreciate you stopping by!
I have trouble with growing lettuce in the heat of the greenhouse almost year round Kim. When I do manage to keep it from bolting it tends to be bitter.
Chuck
I'm always fighting the heat here too, Chuck! This winter was esp hard with random 90 degree days!
I am in So Cal, too so I have never even tried lettuce. My brother has some luck with peas and lettuce in the winter... I am always too busy with the holidays to tend a winter garden. What county are you in?
Awesome tips. Never put the two together. Ha ha. Now I know why my lettuce bolts.
Now ya know! Hopefully these simple tips keep it growing nicely in the heat for you!
Hi! First, give your doggie a hug for me! 😍 Second, could I do this with spinach as well? And third, do you think I could just plant lettuce (and spinach if possible) in a pot or a box that I can move around, take it outside for a few hours very early in the morning, around 6 am (I have spots with full sunlight in my backyard that early in the summer), so it can get some sunlight and then move it indoors for the rest of the day? Or it still needs daylight? Because outdoors, even in the shade, where I live, it can still get really hot, but indoors there might not be as much daylight as outdoors, but I really want to grow lettuce and spinach during summer because is the season when me and my family mostly eat leafy greens, with salads, while during fall and winter we eat more root vegetables and almost no greens.
Question... What kinds of things make plants bolt? I know one thing is heat now😊
How can I avoid this from happening?
Lovely update Kim thank you for sharing what is the name of your dog my 3 dogs say woof woof to him or her
Hi Linda - his name is Mac - woof woof back to your three dogs!
My 3 chocolate Bess and Hattie SAY THANK YOU
Thanks for the tips! I have a box in my sq ft garden that is shaded by a tall pepper plant - I'm going to try this! Do you think it's too late to start lettuce from seed? I'm in Houston which gets really hot in the summer.
absolutely not! Go for it and great idea to plant it at the base of pepper plant. Perfect!
How many weeks is this lettuce you grew before you put in grown?
hiya Kim. I put my lettuce seeds down last week. Some are coming up in bunches & Im looking at some bare spots. Im guessing Im safe to move the extra plants to the bare spots, yes?
sure, go ahead and try it out! Keep me posted!
Cool tips Kim. While shade may help with bolting but does it help insure the lettuce remains in good flavor? I have herd that the heat makes it bitter? I have yet to grow lettuce i should try it some time.
Thanks for Sharing.
I've had pretty good luck with mine staying sweet as long as it is picked before it bolts. Thanks for watching!
cool thanks, so long as they don't bolt they remain sweet =)
I am going to start bringing my container lettuce in the house late mornings / afternoons and see if that helps because although I don't think this lettuce is prone to bolting, a lot of leaves have turned brown with the hotter weather and many have spots on them (I'm wondering if the spots are because I over-fertilized) Thank-you for your tips.
Denise Hughes Hope it helps, Denise! Helps prolong the life of mine, eventually it succumbs, but at least I get a little more production time out of the plants!
Great video thanks, where are you based as im watching this in the UK Cornwall ? and im trying to grow little gem lettuice, trying for a month now in late aug/ early sept. indoors not too hot but little seedlings seem to bolt , get to tall fall over and die?
Andrew Redden I'm in So. California. Sounds like your seedlings might not be getting enough direct light, so are getting leggy reaching for the light. This will weaken the stems and sometimes cause them to keel over. You could try a clip light with some CFC bulbs in them for some supplemental light to see if that helps. Good luck and thx for watching!
