I love the fact that after Benson tells Kipo he's gay, they quickly move pass it, there's no awkwardness at all, and Kipo and Benson become closer friends because of it

This series may not dive too much in the homosexual relationship but the way Benson came out was positively amazing because of how normal it seemed. He barely made it seem like a big deal, he just went out and said it with no issue.

I absolutely love that this cartoon straight baits the audience. They gave us a girl and boy main character and put them in a situation that would normally seem romantic like an amusement park and then revealed, without a doubt, Benson is gay. I love that he got to actually say the words and the show is so accepting about it. We need more shows like this.

And I'm so glad that Kipo and Benson were able to talk through there feelings as for Kipo, who mostly embarrassed for seeing things incorrectly and for Benson to be completely understanding and for them to just hug it out as a little silly misunderstanding they can just pass on.

I love how Benson being gay is not a big fact about him that they focus on. We get multiple episodes with him as a character and then they casually just say he's gay and move on. It's refreshing.
Yeah, as a bisexual I appreciate the representation of gay characters in modern animation, but some just feel very overdone. Sometimes with some shows, I feel like the sexuality is hyperfocused on to the point where it overtakes the plot. I love Shera to death, but it sorta happens there because literally almost every single character is LGBTQ and it feels somewhat exaggerated.
In my opinion, true representation of LGBTQ in modern shows is when it is treated like a character trait and not like an important asset to the plot (unless its plot is literally about being gay). It should be treated like many straight relationships in media, like its natural.
@@anarchyfork2676 I get what you mean but I wouldn't really put She-Ra as a negative example in how it represents its lgbt+ characters (now, on how some of those relationships are, that's a whole different conversation lmao). Sure, it has a lot of gay, bi and so on characters but I never felt like their sexuality was the focus of their characters and, like with Benson, it was just a fact about them that didn't really influence how they acted. Adora is a lesbian, but that's not the focus of any of her arcs, it's just what makes her fall in love with Catra at the end. Bow and Glimmer are bi but that is never really brought up in the show (which is kind of a shame, but for some reason they never used any actual terms for it, making many people view those two as ambiguously straight). Spinerella and Netossa are just a married couple that cares about each other and does what spouses do.
Idk, while I don't agree with how some of the ship dynamics play out and some instances like Double Trouble being problematic, I don't feel like She-Ra ever put a character's sexuality before their personality and arcs.

Benson is actually the first animated character to ever say the words “I’m gay”! Obviously there are like, animations on UA-cam and stuff that say I’m gay, but in terms of major animated shows this is the first.

It's a shame Kipo got almost zero advertising and was sadly brushed aside after all it did and all the hard work the creators did to produce the whole thing in the short span of time they had. Maybe someday we can see a revival that firmly takes place in the new world

The scene with Benson and Kipo was one of the high points of this show. Kipo doesn't get mad or accuse him of "leading her on" or friendzoning, she acts like a real friend and accepts him for who he is and that she's still happy to have him in her life. Benson for his part doesn't act embarrassed or defensive because he has no reason to. He just tells Kipo that he's gay without a bit of hesitation or fear, and then they hug it out like real friends. Perfectly executed.
The fact that being gay is just another part of Benson as a character and not the center of his existence it's truly awesome
Props to Netflix for that- usually LGBTQ+ characters in shows have the entire spotlight which derives from the shows plot
The interaction between Kipo and Benson was handled so nicely. Not a situation often covered in this sort of show, they handled it very sweetly.
This is honestly the only episode I vividly remember from Kipo and The age of Wonderbeasts.

(Also Scarlemagne is I think the most well written character in the show)

Benson honestly is the best handled gay character from DreamWorks, at least from what I’ve seen so far. He’s just chill, doesn’t take things seriously, including his sexuality. He’s a teen, ultimately it’s just a part of him but not his overall identity, it just is what it is and that normalcy is refreshing.
We kind of see that with Owl House too, where the Boiling Isles, it’s not even a thought
I am Benson if I was in this show. This has single handedly shown me a character that I see myself more in than any form of media. When I first saw this I could not believe the time I lived in. This will always have a special place in my heart. Also who doesn't love theme parks

What I loved about this was they were told they had to use the word gay when the sold the show: “When we sold the show, we had a gay character,” recalls Wolkoff (creator of Kipo). “We talked with Peter Gal (chief creative officer at DreamWorks Animation Televsion) and he’s like, ‘Oh you can totally have a gay character, but they have to say the words, I’m gay. We don’t want to be ambiguous with it. We just need to be very clear.’ It was awesome to have the studio behind us to allow to do that.”
9:00 honestly that trope usually makes me stop liking shows, so it is definitely nice to finally have something where that doesn't happen
Yes Yes yes! I have been waiting for that for five episodes! Yes it is great. Fun fact, during the production of this when they suggested having Benson be gay, the creators said sure but only if we have him say it out loud, which I find just so awesome. This is why I constantly say Kipo is near the very top if not on top when it comes to queer rep in animation, because they actually had Benson say the words out loud! No subtext, no reading between the lines, no ambiguity, he's just straight up about it, no pun intended.

11:55 The creators really pushed themselves to make Kipo what they envisioned the show to be despite all the hurdles in their way and while it's kind of sad many have forgotten about it or never even heard of it, it's wonderful people are still finding it and appreciating what it did. I hope everyone who was part of the show are doing great. Also hope one day people find the show again in mass and it triggers a big resurgence and maybe even a revival series or something

Can I just say I’m proud of Dreamworks for having no shame to actually say the word (and while She-Ra never required it as actions speak louder than words, it actually makes me wonder why they didn’t say it; again, it’s not necessary, just makes me curious).
Nevertheless, it’s great to see and makes me feel really bad for Kipo; poor girl got friend-zoned hard, but for a good reason.

I've heard stories that in the first season of She-Ra, the show wasn't allowed to explicitly depict queer couples, and the rule only changed in season 2. I infer Netflix and/or Dreamworks had some kind of "let's test the waters before we commit" strategy about queer representation.
She-Ra didn't say it because, as I understand it, Etheria doesn't really have or care about sexuality which was an intentional point on ND Stevenson's part, you just like who you like. Whereas Kipo is ostensibly Our World In The Future, and orientation is a real thing that is relevant to this particular situation.
I think they don't even need labels in Etheria because there's no homophobia there
That's partially due to the benefit of having your story take place in a world that isn't Earth. It's the same reason that Dana gave for the Boiling Isles. Making it explicitly clear this is a place that is free of homophobia.
And I agree, well you don't need to say it out loud because actually speak louder than words, sometimes saying it out loud is better. That way there's no ambiguity, no leaving it up for interpretation until the same sex kiss happens. And honestly, the fact that Benson says it out loud kind of proves that there's nothing wrong with saying it out loud.

Yeah, this is a good episode. Also, glad Benson was being honest with Kipo and Rat-Land is a pretty fun place (the joke about annual passholders was spot on) Although the voice actor for Dave sounds familiar to me,he's funny sometimes, especially during that spike jacket scene and where he found the "frisbee"
I get why Wolf acted the way she did when she found the "You-Know-What". I'd like to say why but I think it's best you hear her explanation in the next episode. It kinda goes without saying but that spiky sleeve is cool looking.
10:41 that same thing happened to me with a lesbian, we were lab mates and I asked her out, it was a bit awkward at first, but after a day or so she told me she was glad she told me she was lesbian.
Nowadays we don't contact each other, but I'm glad she was cool with me even after I messed up.
Kipo and Benson are such amazing friends!!! I love that there was no awkwardness after he came out as gay.

i can't think of any other kids show where a character actually states their sexuality directly like this!! kipo showed how easy it is to incorporate it, and do so naturally!
i remember the first time i watched this episode i was totally NOT expecting that coming out scene, i was even watching it with my mom by my side and the way i screamed damnnnnnnnnn i think that's when she found out i wasn't straight lmao

While we didn’t completely see it here, I like how they reminded us of Wolf’s hate towards mutes as we get another conformation on Kipo’s mutation. Also those are rosettes, technically not spots as they aren’t solid circles of colour

This episode shows just about everything that makes this show so fun. Theres obviously the stuff with Benson that everyone was excited for this episode specifically for, but also just about every episode finds a way to be both fun and goofy, move the characters forward, and plant hints for future story stuff. And it only really slows down toward the end for obvious reseaons. They really found a really solid and engaging pace for this show.

I think my absolute favorite thing about the “coming out” scene is that not only did they blatantly say it without being scared of saying it but the fact that the move on from it fairly quickly, they don’t dwell on it and make it seem like it’s a big deal but something normal. A lot of the time people don’t talk about how while the rep is important, making it seem normal and casual is equally as important.
Fun fact: when he said he is gay that is actually the first time a character ADMITTED. to being homosexual

My headcanon as to why Wolf is keeping it a secret is because she loves Kipo. She doesn't want her to leave yet. She has finally found someone willing to give her what she wants and needs. Love, support, structure! Also this really good since all the main characters are people of Color.
Among the millions of reasons Benson is such a meaningful queer character, it's really great how he isn't your stereotypical caricature of gay men (which isn't inherently a bad thing, we love our stereotypically feminine gay beans), but this is just a refreshing take imo.

A common thing that shows (including Kipo) do when they have an LGBTQ+ character(s) is make homophobia or transphobia not exist, but have some way to explain what LGBTQ+ people go through. By doing this, they show how the world should be (regarding LGBTQ+ people) while not silencing their experiences. For instance, Benson is gay, but everyone is chill with it. However, he's condemed for being friends with a mute, Wolf was kicked out of her family, and Kipo is being hunted just for being who she is. it's not exact, but the parallels are there.

Also regarding Kipo, I think that’s usually the case. For example the X-Men almost always developed their powers once they were entering puberty.
