A Craft of Mine's developer here! I'm not sure if I'm part of the downfall or the end of the good old days, but I'm glad I get to be either 😎 nice video xd
It's sad that when the original cave dweller mod was released, a ton of mods derived from the same theme were released much later, and none of them gave credit to Gargin, the original creator of the "cave dweller mechanic". These guys don't know how to make a horror mod that doesn't have jumpscares or chase moments, it's practically Ctrl + V all of Gargin's work and making small additions just to "differentiate".
I feel even worse for the cave dweller evolved dev. He actually worked hard on new code and mechanics for the cave dweller only for it to be stolen by everyone and never given credit
This is not even the first time this happened with Gargins work. He made a "horror" mod for Gmod and made it open-source like Cave Dweller. This lead to countless 12-year-olds flooding the Steam Workshop with asset flips of Gargitron.
>sees an original mod >copies its code >copies its model > “reskins it” (makes it a darker shade and add blood) >adds “fully custom” sounds (taken from the internet) >”yea I cooked with this one” > “this NEW minecraft horror mod is going to change EVERYTHING” SwayleMC mindset
reminds me of how a guy took the cave dweller mod by gargin, made a new model, and made its characteristics worse then released it as its own mod called "Better Cave Dweller"
@@spawn2775 "I mAdE aN eVoLvEd CaVe DwElLeR" It wasn't evolved, or even remotely scary. It was just a mild annoyance, like a zombie or creeper. It just walked towards you whenever you looked away. It was absolute BS.
@@y21-h5r "Creepier Cave Dwellers" and "True Cave Dweller" both try to give more of a vanilla feel to the model (the former going more towards the original model and the latter going more towards the remastered model, though they both still try to have a vanilla+ feel to them)
Creator of Whispers of the Wendigo speaking. Some of the mods mentioned including mine aren't directly dwellers but they work off a mechanic similar to one where you're getting stalked and then attacked. I'm trying to break out of this system and create an entity that feels sentient and like a living creature. Something more like the manbear that actually stalks you, doesn't rely on spooky sounds to scare you and it's whole thing won't be sound-chase-despawn
Yeah sorry about that, I shouldn’t have put it in, i just call dwellers (horror mods that aren’t scary) in my opinion ofc, I’m sure a lot of people actually found it scary, it was just my perspective
Can you make it sleep for a bit every however many days so the player could stumble onto it resting, causing a choice of either trying to kill it or trying to leave quietly ? Plus it could still be creepy, maybe sleeping strung up like a bat or some other strange way
Honestly the cave dweller is innocent in all this. It started just as someone's headcanon on what's making the cave noises and honestly does a decent job at being scary. It's not perfect, but it getting lumped in with its copycats that just ride off of its success feels wrong
The thing Minecraft horror lacks is subtly and build up in its horror, and I can't believe I'm using this movie as an analogy, but The Shining is a brilliant example of Subtle horror and build up, and despite the fact the movie itself is a ghost story taking place in an isolated hotel, I think Minecraft horror mods should take inspiration from its methods, i.e. slow build up with implications and changes in the world of what's to come, before a sinking feeling, and the payoff taking place
@@Bread011 The second Herobrine turns into a hostile mob before the end of the mod, is when you know you done goof'd making him scary. It's infinitely scarier to be stalked and have your base and items rearranged, to come across someone else's projects where *you* didn't start anything in singleplayer, and to never quite know if you just forgot you did that or that's the game playing *with you* especially in peaceful mode than it is to have AWOOGABOOGABOOGAWOO jumpscares. If I wanted to get jumpscared out of nowhere I'd just go into a jungle after mining at night under it and test my luck with skeletons.
@@neoqwerty it updated to be hostile? Or am I missing something Cuz the developer of the mod himself said from the fog wasn't supposed to kill you but rather just build tension
I think it’s where the horror of Herobrine originally came from, it’s that subtle horror of being watched from a distance, the weird, inexplicable changes to your world, it’s the slow build up
I agree! Real life animals don't make scary noises to scare it's prey, the prey will obviously run away and if they are succesful the hunter has no food
I said it before and I'll say it again. There are horror mods that exist that are A- Underrated, B- Unknown to the wider community. The Dweller Trend has sort of hidden those golden nuggets, and also ruined the Horror genre in modded Minecraft. It's really a shame. I just wish people could explore more of those mods, and focus less on used and reused mods that do mitosis every week.
@@GreenBarsArchives what sucks most is the fact that because of the dweller trend. even mods that had nothing to do with dweller stuff still had youtubers slapping "dweller" over them in youtube title. even ones that made literally no sense to be called a dweller
TBH it wasn't the milking some other horror mod videos or other horror creature mods like "The One Who Watches" cause thats a good horror mod. It really came down to Swayle, and his crew. Who not only copied and paste bombed the same type of Dweller 15x, with just a different sound and texture. But also stole other mod creators content and retextured their horror mods and claim it new or updated.
@Damian-cilr1 They are just nothing but retexures. Every Dweller mod is made with the Evolved Cave Dweller Mod. Swayle and his Crew abused tf out of the horror mods.
@@valzicplayz3845It's sad really the one who watches had an update that made it more than just spooky monster screaming at you simply looking at all the models for most of these dweller mods u can see it's just a re skin of nightmare.jar a retake on the original cave dweller mod
Horror creators need to figure out how to make their own original stuff, we see this happening everywhere with dweller mods and mascot horrors in general, theyd rather take whatever seems popular, spend as little time as possible making it, and expect to make millions
It is also the same with modern horror movies. I really think that Creepypasta writers are now part of the film industry because Imaginary and a whole cinematic universe about what is essentially Winnie the Pooh.exe exist.
@@SilverTwinkle SCP also met a similar fate once Battle Boarders (Death Battle, Vs Battles Wiki, etc.) heard of its existence. Every article now is just some poorly written meta-fiction to write "the strongest verse in all of fiction."
@@SilverTwinkle dude i couldn't agree more, any attempt to add logic and "lore" to unknowable cosmic horror ruins it entirely. SCP was original and well executed, but it's growing into horror spaces where it doesn't belong
@@dopesickdogI disagree with this, even from the start, one of the intrigues of SCP was the scientific, research and documentation approach. Humanity trying their best to understand these anomalies, and protect humanity from them. Having this approach doesn't necessarily mean actually understanding the ineffable though. They can try, but it still retains the otherworldly, unknowable aspect that makes it horror.
Sometimes Horror is what we *DON'T* know. You can technically never be in real danger, yet have a horrifying experience. Exploring a "Dead World" that has a lovely sunny atmosphere, but absolutely no signs of life anywhere, even in towns and cities, would be scary. No music, no gore needed, just a world that was clearly lived in...Till it wasn't. *And you will never know what happened to everyone*
if its the herobrine mod then i dunno exactly what you mean lol. When i played the mod it didn't really ever freak me out in any way and i guess thats just cause there wasn't really any threat, i feel there's really good potential as it did scare me once when i wasn't expecting it but that was after it appearing behind me 100 other times lmao. Make it so he's a threat and i would definitely find it more frightening.
@@thesuppresorthe thing is he’s not SUPPOSED to be threatening. He just messes with you and your world, like classic Herobrine did. Burning down your house, opening doors, leaving signs, stalking you, appearing near you, watching you as you sleep, watching you through windows, leaving forests with no leaves, etc. Making him “threatening” would ruin the point of the mod
@@darling.............. that’s subjective, I’ve seen many people jump when they see Herobrine. It can definitely startle you. Also the creator of the mod said it wasn’t really suppose to be super scary, just was suppose to bring you back to 2011 where everyone was scared Herobrine was haunting their worlds.
I kinda agree with you, that horror mods have had a major downfall, the only mods that are actually ok are the, Man from the fog, From the fog, the cave dweller (normal or reimagined) and the pale hound (i like the pale hounds model) Most other dwellers are just noise makers they yell and scream 24/7 never shuttin up. I love calvins series as he actually has good content.
One of the best "scary" mods I played was fish's undead rising, which funnily enough is not even a horror mod but a simple enemy expansion. It really explores the fear of unknown while staying true to the original game. No loud noises, flashing lights or "spooky" monsters. Just new enemies that you've never seen and have no idea how they behave (which also are balanced in a way, requiring a lot of practice to beat but not being unfair like most dwellers). While this mod never made me scream or jump it was the only mod so far that made me feel like I'm playing minecraft for the first time again and feel scared of the night.
Minecraft horror can work. It just needs to work with minecraft, not against it. You cant just make a horror mod that doesn't look like the MC style and works against the horror people already feel when playing the game. The Warden works because it kinda plays into the mystery of the ancient city, the unknown and the lonlyness that people can feel when playing Minecraft. The original dweller was a good idea, but the trend just went in the wrong direction. Minecraft can be scary, it is just a difficult thing to achieve!
Not to mention, the way the warden spawns The sounds the sensors make When i first started fighting a warden in ATM9 (Before i became nigh unkillable and was actually squishy) I was scared of the warden sense it strips you of your sight, and its sounds are heartdropping The warden is the best vanilla dweller we have
The Warden is honestly _really_ well designed. - It looks menacing, but in an odd sort of way it also looks derpy and cute. - Its terrifying, but not enough to give children existential nightmares. - Its overpowered, but its not _invincible,_ which makes it scarier. Fighting back won't help much, and that is more impactful than not being able to fight back at all. - The fact that its hard to kill and can appear anywhere if you set off a shrieker makes it feel more like a force of nature than a normal creature. - It can attack the player through walls using its sonic blast, instead of just being able to break through blocks. - Its overly animated... Which makes it stand out and feel unnatural compared to Minecraft's usual simplistic animations (although this effect is lessened because of the newer mobs like the frog, camel, and sniffer). - Its vibration/sound mechanics make it extremely unique, and encourages the player to have to sneak around (making it slower to escape from). - The Darkness effect (combined with the heartbeat) messes with your senses, makes it harder to see, and basically makes it feel like your character is having a panic attack (The Warden's sounds can also be heard from farther away, even if you can't see it, you know its nearby and it gets louder the closer it is to you). The glowing parts of the Warden also show through the darkness effect, so you can _always_ see it. - The fact that it only appears in the Deep Dark means it can be avoided, so it doesn't alienate players who are sensitive to horror. - And of course, having an entire biome dedicated to it also sets the scene for it, by directly correlating the absence of life in the area to the Warden itself, making it feel like a terrifying force to be reckoned with.
The thing that mostly gets me with Dweller Mods is the fact that 1. They're all the same 2. They don't stop hunting you, it's all for UA-cam clicks and stuff, not even for actual creativity. If I were to make one (I may) it's not gonna be a chase every second, it's gonna be unique to a biome and it'll have actual drops, actual gameplay added to it to make it truly unique, not just copy paste slop for UA-cam-
I like to imagine an arachnophobia-based horror mod in which you're being haunted by a spider demon and she uses spiders and spider monsters as vessels.
I actually like many of the dweller type monsters, but they have to have their own MO (so not flame dwellers). The One who Watches is earrapey sure but I think his redlight greenlignt invisibility mechanic is cool and the dev's stages update definitely took some of the pain out of the experimence. Obviously the Cave Dweller and reimagined versions are classic even for their relatively short times being around, same with FtF. I also enjoy all three entities made by the Man From the Fog dev. You can tell all of them had some thought in care plus actually pair up decently well with eachother, the Man being a constant oppressive force while Apollyon and the Knocker are dangerous but still fairly manageable threats which arent meant to be overly challenging in comparison. Some of the other mods off the top of my head from this trend I approve of is Dangers in Darkness, Creeping woods, eyes in the dark, Beware the Rain, and a few other more niche less dwellerish monster and horror mods. There's also the entirely unrelated mods like Born in Chaos and Graveyards which I'd love to see more like. Spooky creepy atmospheric and world building mods which give real content to work with beyong just a monster is always fun and desireable. To sum up my thoughts, I like that this trend did happen but oversaturation and cheap copies plague it like many horror trends in many medias. Its up to the community to steer it on the right track and encourage creativity and good game design over just UA-cam bait. There's multiple very promising projects in the work at the moment such as the works of IDKsomeguy, Kihec's Siren Head, and the creator of TOWW's Slender game mode. There's more I could list like the updates to the Silence or the upcoming mods from the dev of Sadface but this should make the point. Let's criticize what should be criticized, and appreciate what has something to offer. Throwing everything under the same umbrella rarely ends well.
Every single dweller that's been created after the cave and night dweller... They all are copy paste of those two and they don't even try to be original, they just copy and paste it's AI , so I don't see how are they Creative and original. Swayle does not work hard to make these dwellers , he doesn't even make them. Lmao
Steps to make a good dweller ass entity. 1.make it fit vanilla,no corny ass screams or long limbs or mandela catalogue syndrome faces. 2.make it a completely silent entity that attempts to outsmart you in many ways (setting up traps, catching you offguard, ambushes you in low light levels, camouflage, etc) 3.Have it show up really rarely so the suprise factor doesnt go away after i shows up in the first 10 mins of a world. 4.make it completely unnapealing to children so youtubers cant milk it. 5.just make a good herobrine or white eyes mod for gods sake.
as long as you have the right mindset then an actually decent horror mod is feasible I feel like... modders aren't game designers. Particularly they aren't horror game designers. If only they'd take advice...
@@derp_128really? That’s awesome, It’s my favorite Minecraft horror mod I’ve stumbled upon. (Also I just got to the end of the video and saw the man bear mention LMAO)
at this point, yeah. everything is getting less and less scary. i'm not even scared by my own mod, the starved stalker, anymore. we need horror to get back to its good days.
@@cross_byte wow. thanks man. its nice to know people like it. a lot of people in swayle's server make fun of it for being simple and they call it lame, and it sucks, so people saying they love the mod is really nice.
@@smudgy5172 i'm glad i was able to make you happier, and if you're ever down just know that your lil creature has a fan club of its own, i know because i've seen other people appreciate it alongside me :3
@@smudgy5172 Honestly, the problem with horror mods these days is just the lack of atmosphere. And no, Gmod PNG jump scares, or loud royalty free skin walker sounds being blasted at us isn't exactly building any atmosphere. That's the main problem with most of these dweller mods. Having monsters (ones that don't fit in the Minecraft world) spawn anywhere and at anytime is just annoying, not scary. Sorry for this massive paragraph, but what I am trying to say is that Minecraft horror mods should be able to work perfectly alongside the already scary aspects of the game. Like imagine you're mining in a cave, and suddenly you hear foreign footsteps, or blocks breaking. Or imagine staring at a area with torches and suddenly all those torches are unlit. Imagine the creepy and horrifying environment something like that would create... (Btw, I am not attacking your mod or anything, because, unlike swayle, you actually put a lot of effort in your mod.)
You atleast made it so you could not only kill the stalker, but get a weapon from it, and a pretty damn good one at that. It'll prevent the stalker from becoming a problem, which is more than i can say for the other shitty dweller mods that one hit kill you.
rn its just another dweller once you meet the infected villager cuz the damned just spawns and chases you like every other dweller Its still in development tho so we cant really say its just a full on dweller copy
Hearing about old Minecraft horror makes me feel old as hell. Its certainly true though, dwellers aren't really that scary anymore since the AI/mechanics didn't truly evolve, just remained the same
The knocker consistently and periodically scares the CRAP out of me. To be fair, i get startled easily, but having him show up in your doorway and watch you sleep…. Ugh. Eerie stuff. There are improvements to be made but its certainly going in the right direction
You know, a horror mod that borrows inspiration from Voices Of The Void would work wonderfully with Minecraft. Like, you're just going about your business mining, farming or whatever and there is a small, random chance that some sort of weird unexplainable event happens. It could be a small, harmless thing that makes you tilt your head before going back to what you're doing or it could be the prelude to a genuinely terrifying and threatening event unfolding and you could never be completely sure which is which.
i need a monster thats only there to scare people in the dark. no chasing, no killing, just spooks you a little (and if no other mobs around, makes you drop your current item!)
The most impactful horror mods are ones where the monsters almost never attack. They exist to create unease and linger nearby but never close enough that the player can get info on them
I think the real problem with these mods is there is no “surviving”. There is no goal you’re given that is motivating or even achievable. They’re just annoying and extremely op half the time and can kill you in one hit. They stop being scary after the first jumpscare and immediately turn into a nuisance.
I have a specific idea for a horror mod that feeds into the isolation part of Minecraft as opposed to just "GIANT SCREAMING MONSTER AAAAAH" but I can't code in Minecraft Java for shit!
I feel like something like mal0 (i think that was it's name) from the scp universe would fit. A creature you can oniy see sometimes and it doesn't want to hurt or kill you, it just follows you and gives you company on this empty world
Their spawning mechanic is literally broken, whatever time I install it they just spawn like mosquitoes on a summer night near a lake in a northern region
Recent updates made them spawn too frequently. It made them more of nuisance. The original version, however, was absolutely perfect in it's spawning. I used to combine it with the Graveyard mod by NightKosh that would spawn actual graveyards in your world upon loading the first time. When you would travel to different biomes, you would just find random graves for either humans or pets. When night came, you had a chance of something undead spawning from those graves. The undead animals would scare me every time!
Super tempted to make a Minecraft Horror Mod that simply makes each hostile mob feel like they're from either Silent Hill or Amnesia but sadly I can't code at all I can prolly try to make concept doodles
I honestly feel like Zonko's Monsters did "Horror" mods right, just a little bit of scary on this guy, a bit more on this one and then some mini bosses that can catch you off-guard in the early to mid game, it conserves Minecraft's spirit and feels Vanilla+ even if the monsters are something Mojang wouldn't add if the studio depended on it.
You know these would have been absolutely cash at the height of the creepypasta era back in like 2013-2016 back when the rake creepypasta and other tall thin men in the darkness making weird noises was considered the scariest thing around but unfortunately they arrived way too late to actually be scary beyond a slight bit of startling horror.
Something that I always wanted is that there was a Mod that would add to an Intelligent Mob, something like that instead of being a Dweller that despawns and does not deliver anything important, I would prefer a Monster that is smart, like a Hunter, that searches you and above all reacts to each Player act, something like a Werewolf Villager that camouflages itself in the Villages, a Monster of the Woods, a Ogre who Hunt and eat the Villagers or giving you a more believable and interesting Monster Slayer Experience.
that's something i was thinking would be cooler, lanky screaming man in cave doesn't scare me really, but the journey of a big scary monster that terrorized you the entire game is a fun journey, also the enemy needs to be perminatly dead when you do.
Zonko's Monsters mixed with Fish's Undead Rising and Born In Chaos do a great job for a "Monster Slayer" experience, I was fighting much more than just zombies and skeletons and every night and cave trip felt super intense when I played a modpack that had all 3 of those. The Man Bear mod can give you the smart one.
One thing that worked with the cave dweller is that it's spawn conditions were specifically only in the caves. A lot of the copies don't have any specific spawn conditions, and are pretty much omnipresent. If you wanna have spooky mobs, give them specific conditions in which they appear, like locations, biomes, player actions, time of day, etc. So as to have a promise of safety waiting for you somewhere.
What you saw at 13:19 are called weeping angels, they are entities that feed off time energy, these are humaniod angel creatures. They are actually in a show called Doctor Who and has a nickname of "The Lonely Assassins." Apparently they date back to the start of the universe.
I seriously wanna learn to code in Java one day just to make MC mods. A horror mod I'd make would be based of something that really used to horrify me; the deep vast caves of 1.18. Of course, I've gotten over that fear, but it's because they became predictable, just like the Depths in ToTK, or an even more specific example, the polygonal chaos from B3313. There's just something about huge dark and unpredictable places that just horrifies me, and I wanna expand on that concept. P.D.: I don't think I've ever actually been scared of any Minecraft entity. All the fear has came from (I know this might sound cliché) the unknown.
Derp, the stone angels you saw at 13:10 or something are actually called "Weeping Angels" they're a story/legend about stone angels that when you look away come closer. They are humanoid creatures that date back as old as the universe apparently. They're also a entity in a show called, Doctor Who were they feed off time energy. This is just a small fun fact for you!
While I agree with you I think you didn't go much into why the eras have such a difference in quality. It makes it seem like "old good, new bad" is all you have as a point, when it's clear you have some more nuanced takes on it. Unrelated but I had a fun mod idea, though no idea how feasible it is. It's a monster that disguises itself as other mobs and spawns in groups with them with visible seams in the model so you can tell them apart if you look closely. When you get close or attack the seams open and inside is a mouth that has a tongue that attaches to the player and sucks away their hunger rather than health. It's just a spur of the moment though tho.
at least the slumbering omen isnt just a copypaste and ahve its own thing by having him spawn minion ocasionally , infecting mob , ,added "the lost one" into the modpack , and so on
Well...yes but if they never milked them that much and only left Man fromt the fog Og cave dweller Evolved cave dweller And the one that watches (the fella that looks like scp 096) It would have been better than the current situation
They master the art of looking cool and scary of the unknown for awhile until you figure them out, which is too easy because they are too predictable, and we all know we added them in and they are a mob so where's the horror? No! I say! Create one who is not the master of being the unknown, but being feared because it is known! You can be scared of the dark and the unknown within but that shatters your fear once you know it by turning on a light. Instead, make one that even when you turn on the light it's presence should be feared, by knowledge catering it. It should be a feared just by installing the dude, having second thoughts, hesitate to progress and only the truly brave will complete the game, now that's horror! Let the Mob break the barriers that hold back other mobs, let it seeth into not just the seed, but beyond the seed. It will remember, it will adapt to become unpredictable but fair enough that it's logical. This thing should linger awhile even after to delete/remove it from your world. It should change the whole game, so that building 3 blocks up won't stop it, you MUST innovate, change the game! Let it seeth into the main menu! Let it seeth even in the pause screen! The goal is to limit the player, let them not catch a big breath but a minor breath! When they truly are safe it will only be a ticking time bomb before it will evolve (Think Parasite Mod), let them know that safety is temporarily until the entity is deleted, give the player freedom, but also let them know they have to Git Gud if they want to survive in any world they make, even the main menu! If they want it out of their game! Let it be a hassle to delete! It's presence shall be felt everywhere! Screw cheap jumpscares it has player UI tools!
From my work on the Great Silence mod pack I've realized that horror mods are almost all unbalanced or not fair gameplay wise. Balancing them has been really fun cause the play tests are always really fun. Horror needs to be designed with players that don't know the entity in mind. They need a chance to learn or be able to intuitively do the right thing be it running, Fighting, weaknesses, etc. then the entities need to be interesting or fun afterwards in a way that enhances the experience. My approach has been to embrace the survival aspects with both single and multiplayer.
If you want to play with some kinda good horror mods, the best choice is probably herobrine, cave dweller and maybe the man from the fog 1) it is actually uneasing, his ai is a lot better than most of the dwellers 2) He is the original, like you can't call him typical dweller, because he literally the first of them 3) More controversial, but after update he has got a lot better, with few behaviors types and actually has an unpleasant atmosphere at nights Edit: my english sucks, sorry
The modding community of Minecraft (to this side) is actually pretty close to the modding community of FNF. Half baked copy-pasted formulate'd MODS that just want that sweet clout and attention, before fading into obscurity for the next "big" thing.
No way this is the same channel that always do alex caves mod, didn't realize! "Wow he fun! I think he played fun games too!" Then i check the channel, did bro change username and photo profile? Cuz i forgot
The exact meaning of a sighting I by video but in game. He doesn’t shout or chase you, he won’t scream he just watches. Progressively as days go by he will appear closer before errors appear warning texts and so much more. Herobrine is in this world. The fog.
Gargin cooked with the original cave dweller and everyone and their mother wanted to piggyback off of his success. That's basically the entire story in a nutshell.
Me and a friend of mine were playing a horror modpack together just to see and admittedly most of the dweller mods got old fast as they were just an insta kill or annoyance. There are good horror mods out there yes but admittedly the only time I really panicked was when the midnight lurker smashed through the windows of our base while screaming
22:11 u didn't go into the caves yet. And i agree with u that people shouldn't be stealing mods and just reskinning them. But some mods take a lot of time to make and aren't complete ripoffs. Rlly good video! have a nice day :)
The only horror mods I’ve adored for Minecraft are the MCSX (Minecraft: PS1 Edition) modpack and Infernø’s Herobrine mod. Because they’re not blasting repetitive jumpscares, screeching noises, and reskinned models chasing you. Rather they turn Minecraft into a paranoid schizophrenia simulator where you’re questioning whether your eyes are playing on you or if there’s something lurking in the fog and watching you
Y’know what would be a really funny idea to spoof and satirize how out of hand this Mod trend has become? Put in the Cave Dwellers From The Spongebob Episode “Chum Caverns”.
I do like the knocker, but yeah it definitely needs improvement. Also at the time of me watching this IDKsomeguy has made another new horror entity and so far it's pretty unsettling, plus someone made a mod called Vital Deprivation, worth a look at, though it's still in development from what I can tell.
One flaw I've noticed with these mods is that the entities they add just don't feel justified. There's little to no context surrounding them. Their only purpose is to try to be scary, which, ironically enough, makes them fail at being scary.
What if there was an entity who’s only goal was to steal from your base. It would look ghoulish and unnerving, but never directly attack the player. It would learn to open doors and ways to hide in what it deems the player’s base(maybe it recognizes the coordinates the player frequents the most/sleeps in).
There is only one thing i can disagree on. Slumbering omen isn't same as others, i don't know was it as good as it is now when the video was made. But nowadays it's one of my favourite horror mods because of how different and large it is.
@@derp_128True. He don't really looks scary, he is just sudden most of the time. Jumpscare is the only thing telling about his presence before he gets near enough to kill you.
I hate the dweller reskins and stuff, but the knocker dude was a bit creepy when I played it. (the knocker when I played only came every now and then.) (and I was too lazy to make a fence.)
Honestly,a ring to the finger for minecraft mods would be...explode the "kenopsia" feel. For ppl who doesnt know what is kenopsia: is the feeling of being watches, feeling like before ton of ppl would be there...but now it doesnt. It would be very cool, not a funny ass monster. That mystery comes true. That feeling came and turn into nightmare fuel,or something that would get the shit outta me or someone else.
I wish there was a Minecraft mod that didn't focus on horror and in your face jump scares. Rather something that simply can be seen observing you and do strange griefs that don't destroy your builds but are meant to create a feeling of unease
We need horror mod rating. For long play i like Midnight Lurker an From the Fog. Lurker is not annoying, and you can fight him (even abuse the fight if know how). Having different mechanics is also +
the most creepy mod in my opinion is the flesh that hates, i tried a lot of horror mods but this one makes you really jump from your chair in the late stages of the infection. you cant just run away from them they are everywhere
The thing that made Minecraft scary was you’ll be mining and hear the strangest cave noise you ever heard and you’ll never hear it again until you forgot about it. The cave dweller and especially the one with the new model does it well. You’re supposed to have other mod packs with it like create, and rats. You’ll be focus on those mods instead of the horror one. mining, crafting and building. the moment you have you’re guard down. You hear but don’t see it. Scary af.
It's sad to see horror mods just go for "raah big monster that instakills you" because it's such wasted potential. Minecraft's existing vibes of isolation can work really well for horror, hell herobrine worked well as a concept because the mere idea of something else being out there when you're supposed to be alone is naturally unnerving. A horror mod should have you *paranoid,* constantly checking your flanks or looking over your shoulder just in case even if nothing was actually there, only having something pounce once you'd really been buttered up by all the suspense, but no, instead we just get another loud screamer that runs up to you and socks you in the jaw.
One of the problems is that some mods just add entities to your world. if there's a whole custom map, etc. it gets scarier. but some mods won't fit with that.
The polish on the fan game looked lretty good and I liked the aliht puzzle solving elements. The monster's from chapter are either too easy to deal with, or (the main one) are too overwhelming on the first day until you dig a hole in the side of a hill and place a door. The weaping angles are a waste where they spawned and how you deal with them is... well, it makes sense but iit kinda just makes them feel/look cheesy after you realize what you're suposed to do.
Tbh the knocker is one of my favorites cause he’s one of the few horror mobs that won’t one shot me and he doesn’t have infinite health. Edit: that fence gate cheese is crazy. Also I’ve never had him spawn that often, let alone attack that often. He’s usually somewhat more subtle from my experience.
The issue with why Minecraft isn't scary, unsettling at best, but not scary is two fold. 1) Minecraft mechanics don't facilitate the vibe of a horror game. I mean you see this in your and other videos where you literally can build a wall to defend yourself from a monster, I can guarantee you that Amnesia would be ten times less scary if MC could just build save haven for himself or mine away from surface into safe dirt. And 2) Minecraft doesn't have a story or even lore to facilitate horror. Good horror, heck even horror that uses jumpscares usually has a story and lore that also facilitate atmosphere of horror, Minecraft doesn't have it. Those two points combined provide very confusing, dazed, aimless experience of Minecraft. And horror mods suck because they refuse to tackle those issues, they don't add horror mechanics, nor do they add a story/lore/goal for you to strife for. They just throw some mob at you with "scary" model and go "BOO!" It's basically Minecraft version of jumpscare, fast and strong mob. I think a simple way to actually make all of them more scary is adding realism mods, like add a mod that makes your MC asphyxiate due to lack of oxygen if you build yourself a dirtcage for defence. Edit: Another idea, considering it's a Minecraft horror mod, one way to make all those mobs scarier is to let them do what other mobs can't, *mine* towards you, but don't make it too fast, the issue with even good horror games is that if you die to a too strong of an enemy, the horror dissapates too fast, make them mine slower, or have limits or weaknesses. Obviously don't make it too weak but also not too strong, just enough to make you unsafe in small hut made of dirt with no doors, that way you're constantly forced to be on the move. Basically horror mods can only be good if they do a huge Minecraft overhaul, be it mechanics vise or add a story/lore of some kind and give player a goal to strive for to create horror atmosphere

It’s Minecraft that’s why
Not to mention, the way the warden spawns
The sounds the sensors make
When i first started fighting a warden in ATM9 (Before i became nigh unkillable and was actually squishy)
I was scared of the warden sense it strips you of your sight, and its sounds are heartdropping
The warden is the best vanilla dweller we have
The Warden is honestly _really_ well designed.
@@lasercraft32 Holy, you actually described the warden perfectly.
@lasercraft32 people who make dweller mods should REALLY look at the Warden for what to do right
It just hits all those perfect notes
The thing that mostly gets me with Dweller Mods is the fact that
1. They're all the same
The only problem I have (other then the ear splitting eye breaking jump scares) I JUST hate how over modeled they are. I just don’t like it
I actually like many of the dweller type monsters, but they have to have their own MO (so not flame dwellers).

Look up the man bear mod it is exactly how you describe it
that's something i was thinking would be cooler, lanky screaming man in cave doesn't scare me really, but the journey of a big scary monster that terrorized you the entire game is a fun journey, also the enemy needs to be perminatly dead when you do.
@@stachman9531so basically witherstorm?
@@aaamogusthespiderever2566 kinda but not exactly is what i was thinking
18:36 bro i laughed so hard at this part 😭😭
The things was, I didn’t get scared. The fact he can chase you was scary but him falling like “hey mf” just didn’t scare me
One thing that worked with the cave dweller is that it's spawn conditions were specifically only in the caves.
"Goatman can pipe me" is crazy
Derp, the stone angels you saw at 13:10 or something are actually called "Weeping Angels" they're a story/legend about stone angels that when you look away come closer. They are humanoid creatures that date back as old as the universe apparently. They're also a entity in a show called, Doctor Who were they feed off time energy. This is just a small fun fact for you!
Yeah I know 😭
The Silence is the worst type of horror, no buildup, random jumpscares and just pisses you off
18:36 is actually pretty funny. Just:
"Let me in."
*Can't open the gate.*
"No."
*Smacks with a sword.*
There’s one horror mod that’s actually pretty fun and good, it’s the playmate and it has a fun gimmick where you have to play hide and seek with him
a craft of mines monsters
1. spider thing that for some reason becomes a lever on death
2. motor engine
3. black goop
It's just a spur of the moment though tho.
at least the slumbering omen isnt just a copypaste and ahve its own thing by having him spawn minion ocasionally , infecting mob , ,added "the lost one" into the modpack , and so on
that stupid edited sound at 13:38 scared me more than the fucking entity itself
dweller mods are so boring lmao
facts
_Add guns and weapons to spice things up!_
Well...yes but if they never milked them that much and only left
Man fromt the fog
Og cave dweller
Evolved cave dweller
And the one that watches (the fella that looks like scp 096)
It would have been better than the current situation
Have you ever played it
I like some of the dwellers when they have their own gimmick.
Been cooking with TGS still btw, next update will be a big one.
They milked the cave dweller so much that things with the word dweller in them are not scary
I bet the word “dweller” will come in the 2025 English dictionary
Basement dweller
Swayle is ruining Minecraft horror with just reskins.
13:19 weeping angels always scare the crap out of me
18:37 "number 19 mouse in baked beans"
If you want to play with some kinda good horror mods, the best choice is probably herobrine, cave dweller and maybe the man from the fog
1) it is actually uneasing, his ai is a lot better than most of the dwellers
2) He is the original, like you can't call him typical dweller, because he literally the first of them
3) More controversial, but after update he has got a lot better, with few behaviors types and actually has an unpleasant atmosphere at nights
Edit: my english sucks, sorry
The sound at 8:45 is that one meme scream. Now all of you have to hear that too.
10:58 feels like a running gag at the end of its life where the narrator goes completely insane trying to count every instance of it happening
Geniune video, no scripting no roleplaying no bullshit, you’ve earned a new sub :]
The modpack forge labs played with herobrine and the Uncanny old minecraft texture and background is honestly the truly most terrifying mod
Modpack*
Slumbering Omen is actually a pretty good mod from what I've seen of it
18:35 *"NUMBAH 12, CAULK"*
21:10 I am appalled that I just got attacked by derp block zorking it in the microphone
If the slumbering omen looked a little different I would’ve found it more scary, but the mechanics are good
@@derp_128True. He don't really looks scary, he is just sudden most of the time. Jumpscare is the only thing telling about his presence before he gets near enough to kill you.
Yo Derp! Make a vid about the Aftershock Mod, it's quite impressive
oooh tremors yesss, I mean I might add it to a “scary” video with other mods too
I hate the dweller reskins and stuff, but the knocker dude was a bit creepy when I played it.
(the knocker when I played only came every now and then.)
(and I was too lazy to make a fence.)
Scary af.
"OH"
"...alright"
--
*hears screaming* "..."
*digs faster*
18:44 "erm that just happened" ah kill
"goatman mag me pijpen"
nawwww i didn't know you liked the mod this much 😭
It's sad to see horror mods just go for "raah big monster that instakills you" because it's such wasted potential.
21:07 that was so uncalled for
The Weeping Angels (from Doctor Who) are unironically a great choice to add to your game if you want to make it scarier
And
2) Minecraft doesn't have a story or even lore to facilitate horror.
