As your old mate Eli Silverman would say - "a melange of badness". Speaking of Eli - *_NEW BARSHENS CONTENT COMING THIS MONTH! WHOO! AMPLITUDE! MODULAR! SLEPP!_*
Back in the 70's, jam and crisp sarnies were a staple lunch around here. Not Wotsits, it was usually ready salted Walkers (or equivalent). I do like a cheese board but won't have one at a restaurant. I do agree that it should be a starter as well as after the main meal, as not everyone wants desserts.
A cheese board is best eaten immediately after the main course, enabling you to finish your red wine with the cheese before you then move on to dessert. This is the French way.
Wow, feels like forever since we saw Barry and Ashens eat funky food together. It's kinda nostalgic. A truly marvelous selection today, too, though I can't help but think the cucumber and chocolate might work a little better with just a sprinkle of salt. So thanks. Now I'm curious.
One thing I got addicted to while I was pregnant was plain potato chips/crisps and slightly softened vanilla ice cream! I still get cravings for it these days (my last pregnancy was over 30 years ago lol). I introduced it to my bff, one of my old bosses, a neighbour or two...and everyone admits its great. Just soften the ice cream enough to be able to stir it and then crunch a handful - or two depending on the size of the ice cream portion lol - and stir together.....creamy, crunchy, salty, sweet goodness!
I knew the Oreos and sour cream would work. For decades, one of my favorite dips for fresh fruit has been what I call crema dolce, which is just sour cream with sugar. You can play with the sour cream to sugar ratio depending on your tastes, anywhere from 2:1 to 1:1. The sour cream breaks down into a thick liquid, tasting like cheesecake. Amazing stuff.
Thanks for the mention Barry, what I meant was you mix the tikka paste with some mayo until you get it to your taste, then you add chicken, the Nutella goes on bread thinly to make a sandwich, it really is yum, Zonkford 😂😋🍞😍
I'm shocked by the revelation that cheeseboards for some people are considered a post-meal thing? It's always been either a grazing platter or a pre-meal appetiser in my life. Something to keep you (and the kids) from getting hangry while in a social setting when a proper meal isn't likely to come for some time yet.
Interesting, because commonly cheese board stuff IS a starter here in America for holiday parties and stuff. Just kinda sitting there on the table while you wait for the actual food to finish cooking Never heard of it being like a dessert before
You know where bleu cheese is great? On beef. Burgers with bleu cheese and spicy roasted green chilis or lots of black pepper. Or on a butter grilled steak. But you have to go light on the cheese because bleu cheese blows. As you obviously knows. Love your channel!
In my experience, cheese boards are a starter to eat while the main dish cooks😅 sometimes, it's the appetizer, and sometimes it's the pre-appetizer lol
White bread toasted with butter, grape jelly and a slice of American cheese. Peanut butter, mayonnaise and lettuce on white bread. Both child hood favorites.
In my fresh out of college days I occasionally made a bacon(or bacon bits) sandwich with thousand island dressing. Very much me looking in the fridge/cabinet and mixing things I thought could be decent. Still get a craving occasionally
When l was living on my own, I would have chocolate and marmite. Also started eating food cold from the tin as it was pointless heating it up just for myself.
On the contrary, I tend to add chips to sandwiches that I find rather bland. A favorite combo when on the run is to put cheddar-sour-cream Ruffles onto a ready-made egg salad sandwich. The sandwich is really just egg and mayo on white bread, there's really no flavor to it and the texture is pretty blah as well. The chips add a hearty crunch as well as some much-needed extra flavor. I would also recommend plain salted chips/crisps on a peanut butter and jelly, though. The texture and the saltiness really elevate the experience of eating the boring old staple.
I know you don't like unmelted or strong cheese but strawberry jam with a strong sharp extra mature or decent mature cheddar is really good, as per the jam and wotsit submitter said, but wotsists would never be able to fulfill the role the sharp cheddar plays.
This may be very difficult, since almost all of these ingredients are distinctly American, but a late relative loved the following sandwich: - iceberg lettuce - American "cheese" - Miracle Whip - crunchy peanut butter - Wonder bread ...personally, I think it was gross, but they loved it.
Maltesers are an amazing candy. The first I tried them was when my sister brought them back from the UK. They didn't used to be available in the US, the US version was the Whoppers. But I will say the UK version, the malted milk ball inside was a better quality, and the chocolate on the outside was so much better. We do how have the Maltesers in the US now in stores, but it's still not the same as what I got from the UK. The ones in the US being sold now, are much like the Whoppers version with too much wax in the chocolate and the malted milk ball doesn't have much airiness to it.
8:00.. Original digestive (bottom side) with Margarine (topside doesn't spread correctly) step mother used to love them.... palatable, but never saw or tasted her palette to have it once a month..lol
Brinjal (aubergine) pickle and mature cheddar cheese on crackers tastes amazing. You could probably put the pickle on melted cheese on toast too - the spiciness and sweetness of the pickle really goes well with the sharpness of the cheddar.
The Mars bar and Hula Hoop one reminded me that I used to love eating bites of Mars bars with a Trebor extra strong mint at the same time. Added a nice minty crunch to the whole thing.
Watching these combos reminded me of three that I love for different reasons. The first is teacake (as in a breadcake with currants and raisins in), buttered and with salmon paste on top of the butter. It was one I always used to request for my sandwiches when I went on trips with school, so there's a bit of childhood nostalgia there. The second is banana and tomato sauce sandwiches. Butter two slices of bread (with butter, not marge, as that doesn't taste the same at all, although marge/vegan spread alternative is permitted for vegans), slice a banana up into rounds and lay on the buttered bread, then squeeze on some tomato sauce - it's up to you how much you want - then slap on the other slice of bread, cut in half and eat. I "discovered" this one when I was messing about with food combos while I still lived with my parents. I'm glad I liked it, because my Mum wouldn't have been happy at me wasting food, otherwise! The third one is a cooked smoked bacon, brie and white grape toastie. Prepare your bread for the toastie maker, lay the cooked smoked bacon on it, lay sliced Brie over that, then slice up the white grapes and lay them over everything. Add the second slice of bread and close the toastie-maker lid. Cook until the bread starts to brown and is crispy and the cheese is oozing out a bit. Eat them hot but be careful about the molten lava-hot cheese and grapes, otherwise you'll have a blistered mouth and that's no fun at all! I used to help out with a conservation group in Sheffield some years ago and it was then I made this creation. They're good hot, but also go well as cold sandwiches later, when you won't burn your mouth but still have the taste of the individual elements.
i used to love a grated mozzarella and curry sauce sandwich. massala, bhuna, balti, vindaloo, phaal.... anything other than korma or pasanda. also few extra chillis to add some real heat
Barry - I think you should really try a PEANUT BUTTER & BOLOGNA sandwich… spread some PB on 2 slices of bread & slap a piece of bologna on one to go in the middle & monch away. It was my childhood favorite.🥰😁
Cheese and ginger I can get behind. The hairy bikers did it with a sticky ginger cake and some mature cheddar, which is absolutely incredible. I absolutely won’t be trying prawn flavour primula on ginger nuts 😂
Are cheese boards a desert item in the UK? They are very much a starter/side kind of thing in the states. Usually served as like a finger food while people are milling about at a party or somethihg similar.
Sliced mature cheddar and strawberry jam sandwiches. When my mother made apple pie she would often ease off the top crust, place thinly sliced cheddar on top of the apples and replace the crust.
@KellyS_77 that sounds interesting but I think l'd prefer the pastry to just taste of pastry, (I love shortcrust pastry). . But I'd try it for sausage rolls, made with short crust pastry. I'd try mixing cranberry sauce into the sausage meat, add some moisture. Best wishes. UK. E♥️, .
@KellyS_77 puff pastry is very traditional for savoury dishes but I think of sausage rolls as finger food and puff pastry can break up in the hands, and if it's freshly cooked it's a bit greasy. . I do use it to make cream horns though, using my metal moulds. And apple turnovers. Small cake and pastry forks mean the hands don't get too messy (and I have very small afternoon tea knives (not sharp, but cut the cake into dainty bite size pieces), which keep the pastry under control , and of course they are cold, not hot and greasy. (I could eat one now!). . I think the ritual of afternoon tea is disappearing . Best wishes. E♥️
Take white bread and toast it Put butter on one half/ peanut butter on the other half Fold in half Dip into Tomato soup This is better than grilled cheese
You should try Irish Tayto crisps (cheese and onion) with dairy milk Cadbury chocolate. It’s so amazing I’ve craved it at least once every month or so. A lot better if the chocolate is softened (not melted) slightly too. They actually used to sell an official Tayto chocolate bar with cheese and onion crisps without but it’s been off sale for years :(
Why do I get the feeling "Zonkford" is watching while rolling on the floor laughing that they actually got you to try something just made up off the top of their head!
Gravy on battered fish from the chippy is one of my favourite food combos, give that a try, with chips as well obviously! 😂 Also, curries work well with pasta instead of rice.
oh I have one, when I was younger whenever i had some chocolate i had too have a small glass of orange juice right after, i just loved the way the orange juice tasted right after chocolate, especially a dark chocolate
Cheese boards are delicious as a desert. The stronger the cheese, the better. Best enjoyed with a port or a sweet wine like rivesaltes. Bread with peanut butter and sambal (Indonesian pepper sauce/condiment) preferably a hot sambal. Also bread with peanut butter and (Dutch) chocolate sprinkles.
It doesn't help that the UK is the only country that serves them after a meal. It's supposed to be beforehand or a snack, just like they suggested it should be.
I'm a weirdo with Sour Cream, I put that stuff on everything. it's a great secret to melting ANY AND ALL unmeltable cheeses, so you can make some really interesting and intense flavored Mac and Cheese (I'm a rotini and cheese guy personally).
I think I would try adding some chili crisp to the tuna and marmalade combo, or perhaps swap out the marmalade for a pepper jelly/jam. I would think that adding some heat t the sweetness would play well with tuna.
If you do a part three, I'd suggest Quavers and Mayonaise. Last day at uni, decades ago, it's all that was left in the house and I've had it several times since. No one I've suggested this to has ever tried it, so it would be interesting to see your thoughts.
Strong Cheese , walnuts and grape / jam is a really common thing here in Germany :D you even find it on a lot of hotel buffets - I do really like it but I enjoy strong cheese anyway so :D
We do a cheese board every year but we make it into a meal: pastries, cheeses, pate's. Chutneys, jams , crackers and salad etc. We turn it into a party lol. Xx
I like M&M's with chex mix. I also like a green salad with ranch with One of these ( not all at once ) strawberries, grapes, apple or pear with Fritos corn chips.
Please keep asking for odd combos. I will forever request spaghetti bolognese with a peanut butter sandwich. 😂 Everyone I know outside of my house says it’s mental… We love it. Thanks to my mother.

It's nice of Ashens to leave Dans(Nerdcubed) house to go film with Barry. After this was filmed he then had to rushback to Dans to continue Advent
At least he doesn't have a stomach full of cheese this time.
How can you be sure they don't just all live together?

Peanut butter with sriracha was a moment of lockdown madness that really paid off.

Sounds like spicey Sateh sauce. Perfect.
But.. But.. How can Stuart be here when he's with nerdcubed opening his polly pocket advent calender? 😮
Interdimensional forces beyond your comprehension, mere mortal!

Xx
Oh! I've never had a cheese board, but I always thought of them as an appetizer or something to munch on during, like, a 'wine night' or something.
I like M&M's with chex mix. I also like a green salad with ranch with One of these ( not all at once ) strawberries, grapes, apple or pear with Fritos corn chips.
Barry is so cheery!
with the chocolate and crisps, i love plain dairy milk and plain walkers crisps, great combo
Please keep asking for odd combos. I will forever request spaghetti bolognese with a peanut butter sandwich. 😂 Everyone I know outside of my house says it’s mental… We love it. Thanks to my mother.
The birthday hat slightly maligned on Ashen’s head so that you can see a little lip is very comedic to me.
You shouldn't have gone with the prawn cheese. I can't find prawn flavored anything over here.
It's the spaghetti and sugar combo to which barry added tomato sauce all over again
Cheddar cheese on ginger biscuits was a late night supper meal when I was growing up
That cucumber in chocolate is probably great when you salt the cucumber first.
My husband is sat next to me eating a mars bar and BBQ hulahoops simultaneously while we watch this and we were both spooked 😂
