Hey GMBN! The only thing harder than enduro mtb racing is creating enduro mtb racing UA-cam content when there is no enduro mtb racing! Ride ride ride!
Howdy Rich. I've been in the saddle for 31years either racing or riding. 3X Mammoth mountain kamikaze winner 1994 95 96. Raced many Norba and UCI events from 1991-96 with great results in DH & CC. Fast forward 2017 i raced my first enduro in the 50 over cat 123. 3rd place podium. I was 57 in 2017. 2018 2 podium finishes 3rd and 4th. Crashed hard july 19th 2019 training for the season. Broken scapula clavicle 7 ribs and punctured a lung. 2019 i was out...! Began hiking 3 weeks after surgery on my Clavicle and riding 2 weeks later. Ready to rock the 2020 season then the Corona hit. Training as much as possible getting ready for the 60 over nationals in Colorado. My point is and sorry for the book that Enduro racing is by far the toughest in MTB. Race Climb Sit Race again. You're body is shocked then cooled down over and over so you better be fit as a fiddle.
JD Wells Howdy buddy. Awesome story sounds like you’ve done some wicked races and hopefully I’m still going when I’m your age. I definitely think enduro is the toughest form of racing and having raced the EWS for the last 5 years no first hand it’s no breeze 🤘🙌
I don't understand why no one can figure out how to live broadcast EWS. Pretty simple. Run a 1 hr recap/highlights of the previous stages before the main event. Make the gnarliest run the final stage (also make it the Queen's stage) and live broadcast it just like a World Cup DH. Some form of live coverage would sky rocket the sport
I really like the rules preventing swapping of parts, other than consumables or exposed parts (as the mech). Promotes to take care of your bike and I think this totally bleeds out of the competition itself into the MTB sport as a whole.
Great presentation, Rich; and you make very persuasive points. Thanks! And - good work soldiering with interesting content while the season of racing is in hiatus.
XCM comes to mind, think XCO, but a 100km race instead of a 90min race. 100km in one sitting on a MTB is a hard day for anyone, even more so at race pace. And you would have to be crazy to think EWS riders are even close to the fitness level of pro XC riders. The key thing with enduro is the climbs aren't timed and there is enough time in their window to do the transition stages at a leisurely pace. There are at least a few EWS riders who dare I say, might be a little on the chubby side and are still competitive, so it still seems technical skill > outright fitness in enduro.
Yes enduro riders are generally fit, but there is a difference between their fitness level, and the fitness level of an XC racer. Enduro racers come in all shapes and sizes, XC racers are generally small, incredibly fit, and very low body weight, much like a road racer. Example, Ritchie Rude, he's very tall and is built like a bodybuilder, his sprinting power is immense, but in an XC race his weight would make him non-competitive on the climbs where body weight > all. Nino Schurter has basically 0% body fat, the fitness level of a top tier road racer, and still has a good deal of strength for his mere 147lbs. Nino would also probably be very competitive in EWS as his technical and bike handling skills are MUCH better than the average XC racer.
mrvwbug44 I’m sure you could take any xco racer at the back of a World Cup race and they could tear Richie rudes legs off. They could also probably hold their own on a short travel race bike on the down hill.
@@mrvwbug4423 u kinda.sunk ur own point...define 'fitness'...worlds strongest man, would u say he is fit? What about fastest marathon runner? Is one 'fitter' than the other? NO. 'Fitness' is an arbitrary term and its definition varies. You cant say xc requires more 'fitness' than ews...they both require different emphasis in their physical attributes. If u get to specifics more, u can start to compare. Then a huge topic.
I’m looking at getting an enduro and would like to race, at the moment I ride a xc bike (hard tail), I am able to keep up on downhill courses with people on full suspension bikes.
Alejandro Martín de Prado yes, I think I will build my own as a project so I can learn more about my bike, but for the moment I am trying to become faster on my hard tail doing downhill trails
No no no. Your XC bike with 120mm travel is dangerous to ride enduro races. The trails are way too technical, you end up in the hospital pretty fast if you would try riding a XC bike on those gnarly terrains.
absolutely agree - i think only for riders which are used to bike park riding enduro seems to be the toughest mtb discipline. XC marathon is overreaching everything in mtb universe regarding required fitness level and technical skills e.g. CAPE EPIC etc. ride on guys ...
I suggest all the lazy slow enduro climbers to ride a multi day MTB marathon event before trying to convince the world how hard is enduro. Enduro definitely require technic to win a race on the downhill timed stages and the you given a very very reasonable time to go up to the next stage. You can’t compare it to XC race of one and a half hours as no enduro racer will survive the firs 20 min. I personally think all disciplines are nice to race and challenging in different ways. But if you judge by recovery after enduro is the easiest.
XC racers are boring to watch. They have great fitness but that’s about it. Look at XC WC race in Mounte Sainte Anne last year it was comical to watch them ride a more technical course. Just don’t have technical riding skills and the light XC style bikes with XC tiers can’t handle it
Long downhills it a pain in the butt but it real funny as he said .That real like the thing that make enduro riding the best you get the beste of both worlds a nice uphill and a long downhill for adrenakine people like me
It's all about line choice, enduro racers seem to be more inclined to take an easier line to prevent crashing and bike damage, DH will typically take the fastest line and let the mechanics sort out any bike damage between runs.
I am not pro biker and I dont want to be one. Just enduro looks like hm better sport comparing to downhill or those jumping boyz where its all about who is stupid enough to risk your life more than the others. Ofc I might be wrong, but thats how I see it. And thats what I dont like about sport nowadays, pushing limits more than its good or smart. Enduro seems like legit golden middle way.
Guys, i have a question. Can we do 1×8 speed 11-42 rear cassette? I found a cassette that has this kind of ratio with 8 speed and i dont wanna upgrade my bicycle to 10-11 speed just yet. Any idea?
One element not covered, is the actual mileage, time and altitude gain between stages, the transitions...so ur timed stage is 2-4 mins average....but the transitions are??? And do u need to push on those at all, or are they a (relatively) low gear meander ride & chat to mates, or a 50% of xc max, where u are best not to chat, and save ur beans? Thx
You sure need fitness and skill to do well. I've been doing local and national enduro races last few years and suprised myself when actually did quite well in XC race. XC guys might be faster uphill but many loose heaps of time downhill up against and average enduro rider. Enduro mixes everything togeter and sure not easy to come out on top.
If you’re park rat, enduro may seem hard but XC and XCM events are way way way tougher than enduro. Most enduro stages are shuttled these days and if not, they are not timed and riders have plenty of time to rest and chill before they descend. XCM riders need to descend after redlining a climb...on a 80km course.
Lets be honest if you would compare watts/kg ews and xc riders, top3 enduro guys wouldnt be in top 20xc guys( I know i know, the w/kg isnt as important in enduro but it just proves who is overall fitter but still 1min/3/5/20/60/90 xc rides w/kg will always be higher as well as their v02 max
But it's likely that enduro riders will push a higher max watts which is what's required for them when they have gravity on their side. Weight doesn't factor as much in enduro either
there is no XC content in GMBN.. no video about efficient peddling.. only video i see recently is going down hill and that old how to manual how to bunny hop..lince choice...same old same old.. i used to watch every video of GMBN but now a days i stopped watching every video and you can also tell by view number of Dirt shed show.. bcoz seriously your content its not helping who pedal uphill or push physical limit in a MTB.. and except some videos of Blake videos are becoming monotonous.. I am not telling you EWS is easy it have its own difficulty but definitely not in physical fitness like XCO & XCM.. thumbs down for this video.

So a couple of weeks learning how to be a presenter, then pandemic, right be a presenter from home on your own! Respect Rich, good work.

EWS racers are as fit as XC WC racers? It's really hard to believe. We need some solid evidence :D
Nino vs EWS Riders... He would rule them all 😜👍
Sam Hill looks different physically now then when he raced DH,he would have changed his whole training routine for Enduro racing. 🤘
I can't help but think this is just a push to Enduro because GMBN is so tight with the series. It is so subjective and personal.
This was rad! I definitely earned even more respect for EWS, and this totally made me want to go shred!!
Definitely agree with what enduro has done for bike development, especially for the type of riding most of us do!!

Nah.. no skill just heaps of training pff

He says 98% but Finn Iles says his coach tells him to ride at 80 due to less chance of crashing so they probably do less than 98

Nice vid...be good to see a Rich 'meet the presenter'...soz if I missed it, but had no idea u raced ews...
Good idea! Check out his introductory podcast in the meantime - gmbn.eu/podcast36
So who will make a vid with Nino and Sam? Would be great content, maybe each trying the other's discipline for a bit.

I am going to start competing in enduro races. Any advice
Get riding and running long distances over all terrain, stamina is a must have attribute. Along with the skills to descend at speed.
Go to the gym pull those weights
Lots of time on the roughest trails you can find, and getting really good at finding good lines.
All is good
Why have you got a band depressing your brake leaver ?
but like.. what about marathon racers? Their racing takes even longer?!?
