Good job on the 454 Nick!!! I was really impressed with the power and torque the 454 made, amazing numbers, that will make the Nova a very wicked street machine. I have 2 of those MOTOR books, they do have all info others don't. The 1960s one has a lot of old school tips on tuning, it showed how to set timing with just a 12 volt light, did it once, worked great.
My 489 made 601.5 h.p. @ 6,000 rpm and 593 ftlb of tourque at 4500 rpm. Built much the same way. 93 or 94 sunoco. Roller rocker and lifters. Was running on 110 or 112 race fuel and made slightly more on the pump gas. My guy was impressed and said it probably leaned out a little.

A little late to the show here. I just came across this video last night. Mr. Nick, you are a true master craftsman, a "Mastora" indeed, as we say in the Greek language. Always a pleasure watching your videos and a real pleasure in meeting you a couple of months ago (as well as Vasili). Sorry I couldn't make the Corvette Saturday back in Nov20 for the Discovery Channel, my car was in storage. Maybe next time. This 454 is kick-ass bad, amazing video, love the way you approach things "old-school". I just picked up a 1970 Corvette, 454 (LS5), it's original, but I want to have it looked at. Dealing with some "run-on" at present, plus I would like to give the engine a good look-over. And you're the man. I don't know how to go about reaching you by email, maybe I'll drop by and call before I come. Keep up the fantastic work you and your team do, it's a dying art but fortunately there's people like you who are passionate about, love and take pride in their work . Keep well, Mastora! Thank you, and congratulations!
Yep, I had to shim my spring. But I had a tech who had a problem with that and he helped me tremendously. Also thanks for the advice from a previous video. I was cracking my water pump left and right, just after install. I went to an electric fan and it solved the problem. So that means my fan or spacer was bent like you said.
AFR oval port heads aren't SMALL port heads Nick. They will usually out perform stock square ports in my experience. Not saying my experience is the word but it is what it is. AFR are my go to heads. Thanks for your channel brother. Love it !
TIP - If you have a solid or hydraulic ROLLER lifter you DO NOT need to remove the inner springs. As a roller lifter does not need to be broken in like a flat tappet. When you break in a flat tappet, you are case hardening the cam. I had asked Lunati valve train and my suspicions were correct according to the engineer.
Morning Nick, Vasili, and others. That 454 sounded real sweet at idle for the power you were getting out of it. I gathered you would find and fix the problem so that motors going to be one sweet number now That sound from outside the shop sounded top George what a beaut idea aye! Stay healthy and happy guys.
I’m a Mopar enthusiast, but all make vintage Big Blocks sound and look good. The 454 in the 72 Nova should be a sweet combo and tough guy on the street! Keep up the good work Nick. 😎
only 500hp c'mon Nick only, i love watching you do this absolutely awesome motor rebuilds i used to work for a place in winnipeg that rebuilt engines and sold long and short blocks i'm a machinist and i love working the metal and i like to see the metal all working together in harmony..only 500hpLOL.
Every time that engine got above 3000 RPM the smile on my went from ear to ear. What a beautiful sound. I love any good performance engine but I love Chevy.
I love the Vanishing Point shirt. One of my favorite movies and definitely one of my favorite cars. I enjoy watching your videos in the work that you do. Have a great day. Namaste
Boy, did you bring back memories when you walked out with that "MOTOR Auto Repair Manual" @ 10:48. My Dad had 2 or 3 of those (I think he had 1971, 1973 and 1975 Editions). His were just as beat-up and greasy as yours too LOL And Bible is right! Pop never touched a project without first consulting that book .....
A neighbour had a '69 Chevelle SS with a beast of a 454, used to drag it at Luskville QC speedway, drove it there then swapped in those big Mickey Thompson stickies...
A lot of guys tell me I need a 750. I run a 600 cfm on my 396. Very small cam cruiser (stock .398 lift). Throttle response is better than fuel injection. Excellent street manners. Sometimes bigger is not better.
@@NoWr2Run True, but at wot. I don’t drive like that all the time. Peak horsepower is essentially a useless thing when dealing with a street engine. I would rather leave horsepower on the table for driveability and power in the useable rpm range.
Wow I’ve never heard of spring harmonics but that’s why you are the best in the business 👍please keep doing these videos I learn every time I watch you are amazing bro 👍👍👍
Wow, I still have my old Chilton's service book as well, a real godsend for info! My version has all the old specs on Mopar 6 pack setup and adjustment, as well as many other useful information for older musclecars. Hate to even use it near oil & grease anymore. I need that engine for my '94 K2500 Suburban tow rig!
That motor really wants to go...I'd say the dip is valve train related It looks like a harmonic problem to me, roller rockers with a different ratio and or valve springs maybe, if it was my motor I'd fit an 850dp with a spacer beneath and fine tune it...Those are really good numbers for a street car of build though..keep up the good work Nick.
Love the sweat shirt Nick...I remember going to the drive-in in my brothers Gran Coupe to see that flick.. Geez 575hp is going to make that nova fly.nice job as always.
Funny it was the springs. I always get my springs from the Camshaft manufacturer all in the kit and STILL you run it to this from time to time. Usually, I change to a good roller rocker set up and this problem goes away. Good job.
I had an 850 Holley with a 1” open spacer on my 468 BBC. Ran better than my old 750 Holley. My hydraulic flat tappet cam had single springs and made peak power at 5,600 rpm’s.
I shaved 400 lbs off my 72 vette by removing parts that were not needed and replacing with lighter aluminum like removing spare tire assembly replacing stock mufflers with lighter magnaflows replacing front and rear springs with composite VBP system replaced cast iron exhaust manifolds with lightweight headers replaced cast iron intake with aluminum got rid of jack assembly windshield washer bottle and pollution cannister and replaced my heavy P02's hubcaps with rallye wheels for a total weight saving of 425 lbs so from 3225 lbs with full tank to 2800 lbs today!!!
My cousin has a 73' Vette they use to Talley race. Once they us d a abandoned airport. I saw a 454 Vette & it went out & they opened it up, it performed very well.
Wow I'm not the only one with old books like that still. Passed down from my grandfather. Crazy to think how old some of those grease finger prints are. Love seeing things done the old school way.
I worked at an automotive machine shop when I was younger and remember a guy brought in a set of 351c 4v heads to have bigger/stronger rocker arm studs put in. It had triple valve springs and my boss told me it had a stupid big roller cam in it. When we put the spring on our tester to see we estimated the seating pressure at over 300lbs and the open length compression we couldn't get because it maxed out our tester. lul
I reviewed this amazing dyno test tonight and I was amazed. If you got 770cfm out of a 750 cfm carb, then your volumetric efficiency is 770 divided by 750 or 1.027, which is about 103%! That's racing eingine territory!
Sometime you should try putting a 650çfm on, dyno and then switch it to a 750 cfm and then try a giant one with out any other changes I will bet you the smaller carb makes more power be sure to put a 1 inch spacer under the carb
Got to love A 454 in a Nova. Man that brings back memories. Had a Chevelle with the same set up 454 30 over. I never had it on a dyno but it was a fun car.

Keep up the fantastic work you and your team do, it's a dying art but fortunately there's people like you who are passionate about, love and take pride in their work .
Keep well, Mastora!
Thank you, and congratulations!
Engine sounds great. Looking forward to the burnouts.
Nick, The 460 CID show was/is entertaining, interesting & fun. Well done.
The master of Mopar working on a beast of a chevy..love it!!
I love seeing the Motor manual, my dad gave me mine 20 years ago and it's one of my most valued possessions.
You got those numbers because it’s a big block Chevy, nothing like it . Can you imagine what it would do with a bigger cam. 👍👍
AFR oval port heads aren't SMALL port heads Nick. They will usually out perform stock square ports in my experience. Not saying my experience is the word but it is what it is. AFR are my go to heads. Thanks for your channel brother. Love it !
Love this channel! Thanks for sharing your knowledge Nick, and thank you too George on camera! 🇨🇦🇬🇷🇦🇺 🏁🚘🏁
Glad you enjoy it!
That's good to know. Definitely a learning experience. I've got a 454 that I'm going to be rebuilding and it's going to be fun. I enjoyed this.👍
Good morning Nick and team thanks for sharing love what you do for my Monday morning coffee and great job God bless you all
Thanks so much
TIP - If you have a solid or hydraulic ROLLER lifter you DO NOT need to remove the inner springs. As a roller lifter does not need to be broken in like a flat tappet. When you break in a flat tappet, you are case hardening the cam. I had asked Lunati valve train and my suspicions were correct according to the engineer.
Absolutely
Morning Nick, Vasili, and others. That 454 sounded real sweet at idle for the power you were getting out of it. I gathered you would find and fix the problem so that motors going to be one sweet number now That sound from outside the shop sounded top George what a beaut idea aye! Stay healthy and happy guys.
I’m a Mopar enthusiast, but all make vintage Big Blocks sound and look good. The 454 in the 72 Nova should be a sweet combo and tough guy on the street! Keep up the good work Nick. 😎
YES, ON THE STREET & TRACK. Very nose heavy other wise unless all Aluminum ?
"Nothing too crazy. Just over 500 HP." 😁
500 hp isnt too crazy for a Chevrolet anyway. Lol
And the guy buys the most overkill parts for 500 horsepower that can handle 800+ like the heads
@@theeoddments960 was probably hoping for 800 hp.
@@BBBILLY86 guy said mild 500 hp. Idk seems like such a waste of money That could have gone to a lot better use in the car.
@@theeoddments960 Never fun swinging for the fence and striking out.
only 500hp c'mon Nick only, i love watching you do this absolutely awesome motor rebuilds i used to work for a place in winnipeg that rebuilt engines and sold long and short blocks i'm a machinist and i love working the metal and i like to see the metal all working together in harmony..only 500hpLOL.
Such a pleasure to watch a pro at work! Keep the great content coming, Nick!
You took my outside exhaust sound footage request. Thanks guys! You are the best!
Bryan. I wish it were day light. Then you can see the exhaust set up on the roof.
Hope you like it!
Every time that engine got above 3000 RPM the smile on my went from ear to ear. What a beautiful sound. I love any good performance engine but I love Chevy.
A pleasure to watch a professional like Nick.
I love the Vanishing Point shirt. One of my favorite movies and definitely one of my favorite cars. I enjoy watching your videos in the work that you do. Have a great day. Namaste
nick is a force of nature and he is relentless. i am impressed.
Do you need a bigger carb nick
Can't supply fuel needed at higher rpm
So enjoyable watching Nick work. He looks so happy.
Goooood morning, Nick and all the guys!!! Happy (snowy?) Monday!!! Always love watching your shows, keep up the excellence!!
A neighbour had a '69 Chevelle SS with a beast of a 454, used to drag it at Luskville QC speedway, drove it there then swapped in those big Mickey Thompson stickies...
Good memories. Thanks.
@@NicksGarage It's my understanding that the SS was more common with the 396?
Awesome job your shirt is pretty cool. I'm looking forward to seeing that engine back in that beautiful nova!!
Respect to his knowledge and of course to his shirt!!
Amazing movie!!
I love that sound big block baby
Just recently found this channel and I can't get enough of the SBC/BBC dyno videos!
Thanks for joining us!
A lot of guys tell me I need a 750. I run a 600 cfm on my 396. Very small cam cruiser (stock .398 lift). Throttle response is better than fuel injection. Excellent street manners. Sometimes bigger is not better.
You really have too DYNO. it too know positively what the engine really wants more or less of.
@@NoWr2Run
True, but at wot. I don’t drive like that all the time. Peak horsepower is essentially a useless thing when dealing with a street engine. I would rather leave horsepower on the table for driveability and power in the useable rpm range.
@@mattbauckman9907 FAIR ENOUGH, SIR.
Wow I’ve never heard of spring harmonics but that’s why you are the best in the business 👍please keep doing these videos I learn every time I watch you are amazing bro 👍👍👍
wow, the guy that said "springs" ! kudos.
I have a built 454 stuffed in a 1973 Camaro. Loved the info of this video!!!
Oil stains on an old motors manual are like coffee stains on a civil war battle plan. It gives the book dna.
When my dad hit a shopping cart with the grill of his van , he replaced it with a 454 grill. It made him smile when ever he looked at that 454 badge .
Agreed
Love the sweat shirt Nick...I remember going to the drive-in in my brothers Gran Coupe to see that flick.. Geez 575hp is going to make that nova fly.nice job as always.
Thanks for showing the outdoor view during the test, I wondered what it sounds like out there, excellent.
You bet!
Funny it was the springs. I always get my springs from the Camshaft manufacturer all in the kit and STILL you run it to this from time to time. Usually, I change to a good roller rocker set up and this problem goes away. Good job.
The Chevy’s turning some pretty decent numbers for sure. That’s going to be one wicked Nova. Nice work Nick.👍👍
That Nova is going to be a street beast for sure.
Thank you very much Nick for selling a 3xlt shirt. I can't wait to get it. I will wear it in my next video.
I worked at an automotive machine shop when I was younger and remember a guy brought in a set of 351c 4v heads to have bigger/stronger rocker arm studs put in. It had triple valve springs and my boss told me it had a stupid big roller cam in it. When we put the spring on our tester to see we estimated the seating pressure at over 300lbs and the open length compression we couldn't get because it maxed out our tester. lul
Thats roller springs guy!
I always smack my valve caps with a plastic dead blow hammer to make sure the keepers are seated … great video Nick
I’ve been here since you when you bought your challenger love this channel good dyno morning everyone.
Me too but a bit longer
Geez you see the setup on that Nova! 🤤
Thing can rip your heart out just looking at the beast.
Tip: An inverted rubber tire valve works good to seal the dipstick. 😉
Nice!
...that single carb return spring makes me a little nervous, I've had a spring pop disaster!!!
YEAH BUDDY...BETTER THAN MY SUGGESTION...
That tricks works well I have done it many times myself
Love how passionate this man is. 🤘👍🏼
Great job! Always love a big block on the dyno!
Thanks J!
The Semi-Hemi Chevy is a beast
Got to love A 454 in a Nova. Man that brings back memories. Had a Chevelle with the same set up 454 30 over.
I never had it on a dyno but it was a fun car.
