Apparently the family's money was gone long ago and Laurent was living a sparse existence. Evidently anything of value was sold long ago. Most magnificent abandoned castles in European countries are abandoned due to the family no longer being financially able to cover the costs of maintenance, tax's, and general upkeep. Very sad.

I love that most of these castles are filled with huge numbers of books ,libraries containing the knowledge of the ages! Books and reading seems tobe a lost art these days! I have a library with over 5,000 books, and invariably visitors seem puzzled as to why I keep so many books. Some say, you could just look it up online…I say, there is nothing so wonderful and personal as opening a book and learning what lies inside its pages! There is much to be learned about the people from the books they owned! Leslie, you do such a fine job- the filming, narration, music! Thank you! And love your attire, very apropos!

So, I saw myself much younger descending the staircase wearing a beautiful gown. We wandered through the palace going nowhere and everywhere. Fireplaces were burning brightly. Candles were lit. It was all so charming and elegant! Thank you for the fantasy fuel!

It's just called a "Bed Warmer" here in America. They would pass it around in between the sheets, they wouldn't leave it in the bed or it would scorch the sheets. Love to watch your videos!

Yes, I was going to say the same. My mom was an antique dealer, and we had two of these bed warmers hanging on either side of the entry to the family room that was done up in Early American decor.

Fantastic chateau! My guess is that the smaller rooms with all the books were the servants’ quarters that was in one wing of the property and that Lawrence Robert used them for himself because they were smaller rooms to heat. Plus, larger rooms probably felt too spacious for someone living there alone. That chateau seemed far too vast for just the few rooms explored, imo. It would have taken all day to see the half of it. My guess is that the doorway under the staircase was not the main entrance. It’s not impactful enough for the wealthy owners, even though it’s lovely in its own right. There’s got to be a more formal entry area elsewhere. Truly a grand and magical place, though! I would give my right arm to own it and renovate it back to much of its former glory! Love the authentic costume to conduct the tour in, Lesley! Merci🤗

Being born in 1969, I've loved history and geography since very young age, this also includes castles!
Wonderful work, covering wonderful, unfortunately so, derelict castles, mansions etc., etc....
If money was object, I'd restore them or as many as possible, to their former glory, let them feel warmth of a fire, let the sound of laughter travel within....

Now here you go showing us as well such a stunning castle video! How lovely! - The start of the new year couldn't get
any better, wow!
Already the introduction to your video made me nearly speechless with the beautiful drone shots of the exterior
and additionally some images of the interior of that amazing location, combined with beautiful background music.
And - then seeing you coming down that grand stair case in your historical attire. My God, dear Lesley, you are also a talented
showman, as I think! Wow! - There was remarkably valuable antique furniture with many smaller items of value visible. It is such
a shame, that everything is just left behind to decay. - If this writer was very famous, the transscript of an unfinished book,
that you happened to find, might be an item of also some remarkable value.
I could easily feel with you, how incredibly sad it is to see these traces of increasing decay and mould on many parts
in the different rooms. Such a place should be by all means preserved!
It's practically unimagineable, how many items of great art historical value are just left to deteriorate for ever, instead of being
preserved.
I loved to watch you wandering through these abandoned rooms of that wonderful castle and filling it with some kind of new life
with your vivid imagination. - Nevertheless I think, that the castle might have been built in the 19th not 18th century, considering
the architectural features, which are imitating older styles like the gothic style. Of course I don't exclude, that there might be existing
also remarkably older parts in that building, which were not visible in the video. - However a wonderful explore video!

That copper "pan" with the long handle is actually called a "bed warmer". It would be filled with hot ashes from a fireplace and then run between the covers to warm a bed on a cold night.

Wonderful documentary, Lesley. Very interesting castle. Imagine how many people lived and worked in this beautiful place during the 100+ years of it's existence. The amount of books is astounding. That bizarre kitchen device just blew me away....... it is a pump, a very special pump! That's an air chamber on top which is used to build and hold air pressure as the pump handle is moved back and forth. Eventually both the water volume and the air pressure build to a suitable level and it's ready for some heavy duty pot and pan washing. And there's also that high pressure nozzle at the end of the flexible hose to assist the work....... Never have I seen such a device!

When I think of a castle 🏰 this is definitely how I picture them, built with rocks/concrete. It is sad to see all these places decay, and not be saved. I loved to look at the amazing bedding and the beautiful colors of the castle.

Beautiful yet dark wisteria blooms, so gothic yet enchanting. As an Antiques dealer, much of the household items were 1930-40's. and the furniture was rather plain for a castle.. he wasn't into opulence in decor for such a grand stately castle, that's for sure.. lol .. lovely video.. thank you. I love antique Persian, Turkish and Oriental rugs, I wish we could see more of them when explorers explore, antique rugs are worth a LOT of money, A antique Persian rug sold in 2010 for 9.6 million dollars, but they are often sadly ignored.

This was an amazing adventure and I enjoyed this very much. I believe the object you held in your hand at 10:42 (oblong ironstone dish with lid) was actually a Victorian toothbrush holder and would have been part of a matching washstand set which would include a soap dish, pitcher and wash basin. Here in the Southern United States we call that long-handled pan of bed warmer. Yes we could hot coals inside it, and then we ran it under the blankets in the top sheet of the bed just in contact with the mattress and the bottom sheet and it would warm the bed up so you didn't get a shock when you climbed under the covers.

There is something that attracts me to abandoned structures. Much more than the architecture, the antiques, or the material possessions left behind. Those things all link our mortal beings, to life as it once existed in those days, much like a time capsule that is undisturbed until many years later when someone happens upon it and an additional chapter is being read by new eyes so the story can continue to be told....
What attracts me most is knowing that a human being, much like ourselves once lived here and just like that, a life goes 'poof', and the only thing left to indicate who we were and what we are known for is in what we leave behind.... This young man, I think his name is Lesley has a very special ability to connect both sides of the story which lures us in, like transporting us back in time... Fascinating... simply fascinating. It makes me feel like I'm a time traveler.

The bedrooms were small in order to hold heat efficiently (when people’s body temperatures naturally drop), and because people used the rooms for sleeping, only-one did not spend a lot of time in the bedroom with guests. So the small sizes were practical for the lifestyle of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The purple flowers belong to a Wisteria vine. That one is glorious. They can be invasive, which might explain why that one has not died off, but instead, has climbed the castle walls. Stunning!

Lesley is (correctly) always careful not to tell us where these properties are, that he explores. But maybe the answer is in the two heraldic shields over the main fireplace. I don't think that these are family related (why would there be two of them - and only the King of France had the right to use just 3 fleur-de-lys). I think that these are the 'arms' of Tours, in the Loire - 3 towers (tours) normally surmounted by 3 fleur-de-lys.

Hi Michael. You are well informed. This coat of arms belongs to the family de Valois-Saint-Rémy, the descendants of the royal bastard Henri de Valois-Saint-Rémy (1557-1621, son of king Henri II), reason for their right to bear the 3 royal lys flowers. As far as I can assume, the both coats of arms on the fireplaces have'nt anything to do with this recent castle (built 1875).

@@madamabutterfly7349 It even EXACTLY looks like Renaissance style, but it is only an imitation (brilliant imitation, but only an imitation : in France, we speak of "pastiche (de la Renaissance...)").
My inquieries about this mansion gave me the building year 1875.
Moreover, a mixture of 13th century style (gothic windows) and 16th century style (mullioned windows) on a same facade was unthinkable and impossible in the Renaissance age (which severely contempted the Middle Age) : such an artificial architectural mixture is only possible from the 19th century on (mostly 1870's).

What a treat! For a brief moment, I saw people dressed in fine clothes, gathering for a cocktail, a smoke and stories embellished into the walls for all time, smelled the fire, heard half empty glasses clink against one another in toasts, friendly laughing, and a lord of the manor with his hands respectfully behind him by the fire as he listened to his guests' latest stories of hunting, the year's crops, travel and grandchildren. This is a grand castle with so much pride, however, I like that the owner let it be known immediately that his interests were books with very little ornamentation. For a castle, not allot of "stuff" but still very tastefully designed especially the woodwork. Grand yet very lived-in. Excellent place!

Hi Lesley, it is called a "Bed Warmer". It is good that most of the quality furniture has been removed from this castle. It is too sad to see it left to rot. Yes Lesley it is a pump to get the water up to the kitchen. All those books should be in a Library. Have you ever had a ceiling crash down when you were exploring ? Former History teacher here (hence maybe why I'm being so particular), and I have to say that for the first time ever, I'm disappointed in Bros of Decay!
You guys used click bait in promoting this video by advertising it as a "Medieval Abandoned Castle." However, at 1:05 you reveal that the chateau (it's also not technically a "castle" since by virtue of it's architecture it clearly was never designed to serve defense purposes), was in fact built at the beginning of the 18th century, thus grossly missing the medieval era by at least 200+ years!
I hate to criticize, but your content is so wonderful, and your videos are all so extraordinarily beautiful that you don't need to denigrate yourself by stooping to using clickbait. Otherwise, please keep up the amazing work!!
