Thanks for touching on the axe debate, they’re great, but on short trips you’re generally not splitting anything bigger than kindling, something a saw and good knife can handle fine. If you’re going on long trips or with a few people then an axe is worth the weight.
I love my Silky Saws. The 2nd notch and the one not commonly used, is actually better suited for sawing below the belt. Keeps the angle of the blade from going into the ground.
bought 240 not long ago, will buy big boy as soon as i get paycheck. just LOVE silky saws (and since i spend a lot of time in nature, those saws are god sent too), works fantastic together with small axe :)
Great video and info. I would like to add something to consider about the second notch within the spine of the saw blade. This second notch also prevents the user from scraping their fingers and knuckles on the ground when cutting something.
I like the combination of Silky Saws and Gransfors Bruks, and have a couple of Silky Big Boy Outback's, a Gomboy Outback and an F-180. With a Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet, Wildlife Hatchet and Small Forest Axe, I can pair the most appropriate Silky and GB to whatever my needs or preferences may be. The Mini Hatchet and F-180 make for a very lightweight pair, suitable for inclusion in an emergency kit (I prefer the term emergency kit over survival kit). Invariably, the Mini or Wildlife Hatchet and Big Boy Saw are my preferred duo. My Small Forest Axe and Silky Big Boy Outback Saw live in the boot of my car. I started out with a Gerber Sportsman Saw, the lightest saw I've ever known, and whilst Gerber no longer make that little gem, the Silky F-180 is its superior successor!
Just an FYI to everyone living in Sweden: unless you are the owner of the land, or have gotten permission from the owner, you are not allowed to cut down ANY trees at all, even if they're dead and you're not allowed to harvest fallen trees either.
Got the Silky Big Boy and it’s an essential piece in my kit, the axe is too much work , the useful tool is a splitting maul, the orange handle is a better choice in my opinion, and the bitey front is what you need to grab resilient material
Fantastic video, its great that you impart the importnce of the resposible outdoor life, love the silky saw & just bought that based on this video, thanks again
Great video once again Joe. Thanks for sharing knowledge of the Swedish forrest and of course of the silky. Had to buy one now, it's time for retirement for laplander 👍
Hey, my name is Lobo and im Just recently getting into Bushcraft. I researched this saw and thought of getting my wife to get it for me for Christmas. As I was researching, I came across your video. Great video brother. Keep up the great work and awesome videos. I just subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to following you guys!!!
Good Vid Bro, relaxed talking about skills and tricks, like that, you got a new follower. I bought the 240 yesterday, I can´t wait for holding the saw in my hands. I got other Silky too, but this one seems to be something special.Greets from germany. Rob
what model [Fjallraven][Not Fjallraven] Jacket is that? I've looked all over on the (US) sites and can't find it anywhere. Thank you for the video! Edit: It looks like it may not be a Fjallraven . . . . had to spy that sleeve logo pretty close.
Hey ! Sorry for the late response but the summer got really busy. The jacket is made by a Finnish company called Sasta and the model is the Roihu trekking jacket. Hope it help some Joe
@@LivingtoLearn Thank you so much! It’s a fantastic jacket and I’d be embarrassed to admit how much time I’ve spent trying to figure out what make/model it is. Thank you!
@@LivingtoLearnHow do the two compare? I'm having trouble deciding what one to buy...I assume the big boy will burn less calories and process more wood; but I'm looking to be able to pack it in a canoe so the size of the Gomboy appeals to me. Having never seen either in person your opinion would be appreciated. 👍 Great vid!
Great review and leave no trace, stewardship philosophy. What are your thoughts on the bigboy2000 and the outback version pros and cons? Is it worth upgrading for the price etc? Thanks 👍
It does if you have never used one before. It is a tool meant for arborists. Most blade breaks are usually from the transition People make from a regular push-pull saw to just a pull saw. I personally have never broke a blade. But I took my time to.get used to them at the start.
Will this blade replace a normal bigboy 2000 xl tooth blade? I wanna get this instead of the normal replacement but idk if it'll fit. Looks the same other than the plating and such.
3:45 to get at it... (BTW, I bought one while watching your video, It will arrive after Christmas... thanks for the review!)
Awesome ! And thank you for the time stamp. I'll pin this post. Have a good Christmas 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Silky saw is the best. I got one for twenty years and still sharp.
I agree. They are a hard one to beat

Informative and interesting. You covered some of the key features which others have not. I especially liked how you explained how it actually cuts!

great information , what is the best tooth spacing for cutting hardwood ??
Great job on all topics covered in this video brother!!!🤜👍
Good point to using a saw. Keep in mind an ax also can work as a knife if your knife should break. Great video. Subscribed.
Do u have a link for the saw
I'll drop one in the video description 👌🏼
Loved your video
Glad you enjoyed it ! More on the way now that restrictions mean I can get back at it

Never stay in front of pacman, of course 👍
I can't find a single hunter who has reviewed this saw to tell me how it holds up to cutting bone long term.
I heard that the blade easily breaks.

Stop comparing a fcking saw with a axe !
I am preparing calories per tool and wether it's necessary for hobbiest. Thanks for watching 👌🏼

It's the same blade, other than it's nickel coated, my man / Joe
