  • In July 1881, James Garfield was shot by an assassin at a railroad station in Washington, DC. Over the next two months, his doctors tried to save him, though many would later blame the president's death on their lack of proper sanitary measures.

Garfield's death was probably the most tragic for the actual president dying. Harrison and Taylor's illnesses were unpleasant, but relatively quick. Roosevelt and Harding were typical illnesses. Lincoln and Kennedy stopped being conscious after the bullet went into their head, and McKinley only suffered for a week. But Garfield was in agony for two whole months, not even aware that the medical assistance was making a survivable injury much worse. He was about the same age as Jack when shot, but unlike him was perfectly healthy before it happened. Garfield could've easily lived to see the 20th century had his doctors actually prescribed modern tactics like Dr Lister, and he would've been the best president since Lincoln. Interestingly, much like how the son of a famous president was part of his cabinet, his son James Rudolph Garfield went on to be part of another famous president's cabinet-Robert T Lincoln was Garfield's Secretary of War, James R Garfield went on to become Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of Interior. These sons of slain presidents were the last survivors of their own presidents' cabinet

When struck by Guiteau’s bullets, President Garfield reportedly cried out: “My God! What is this?”

In reality, President Garfield cried out after being shot: “My God! What is this?” The dramatic recreation here has him taking the shots silently.

What happened to Garfield getting shot was bad enough for the poor man but to have these quack doctors (or should say this DR Bliss was his name) and all the others sticking their dirty fingers in him making it worse I have read the book on this assassination and its painful to read all the details of what he went through

  • @DJDoubleCee

I always questioned if Garfield’s assassination counted as an assassination. It’s mostly the doctors fault why he died. Garfield would have survived if Doctor Bliss hadn’t been so arrogant.

The idiots wouldn't have mangled Garfield had Guiteau not shot him. For about a day, Garfield was fortunate that the bullet didn't hit his spinal cord or really vital organs

@@redjirachi1 oh but the doctors first blunder was decidng his liver was peferated and he wouldnt live thru the night....yeah guitteau shot him. He caused everything that happened next. Its also pretty clear from hus behavior and his letters that he was most probably insane (for more then john hinkley jr)...but if garfield had competent doctors guitteau wpuldnt have hung cause garfield would never have died

@@Kimosabe12345 Sure-because "those who pull the real strings" are so powerful that they can easily assassinate a president, but they can't find anyone other than a bumbler who immediately gets caught to do it.

That metal detector for the human body amused me but then, it might be a great idea for scanning the metal poisoning, the new modern computer technologies might help a lot , scanning the body in order to point the precise surgery areas, if there's a true will to save lives you see, they become a fortune for all of us, such sad situations should help us improve the health cares systems, giving patients pain killers, narcotics, morphine or weed it's not the solution healing from various health problems, we should work rather on manufacturing organic cells in order to regenerate wounds or internal injuries and give them patients the chance to give up using pain killers, do you realize that most American citizens are poisoned? Call it the Garfield care but. .get in action and do something about this situation guys

Very sad story indeed, you should help the PBS followers, get involved and take important lectures of life from this tragedy, never let one single doctor to take over a suffering patient, never ignore infections, not even these might be only internal, such as a belly flu or food intollerance, from time to time, get together and share purification diet, if not for a single day, maybe a week might be better, fruit and cereals for instance, no fried food no fat nothing, only fruit and whatever cereals, biscuits crackers multi cereali cookies, the body is our most precious asset we have to take care of, wish you never let any tragedy of a kind without conseguences guys, you can do a lot of great things about it. The germs problem, watching homeless slum people living in the dirt, sorry guys, they are a huge germs infection and thinking, they can go on living worst than animals on a junk dump is wrong, nobody must live that way, it's.. sick. Those who lose their humanity, sooner or later infect us all, get involved guys, there are solutions to...sanitize such situations
