I love the part at 3:45 when Shifrin begins the repeat of the first section and his phrasing is so beautiful, Peter Wiley just can't help but break out in a smile. It's a very emotional performance. Exquisitely played. I am so sad that the Guarneris retired -- even though they deserved a break from 40 years of constant touring. Their recordings (and occasional concerts) have been important to me my entire musical life.
Possibly the most romantic piece ever written - marvelously played!
We should remember to thank Richard Mühlfeld, clarinetist in the Meiningen Orchestra, whose playing motivated Brahms to return to composing after he felt he had nothing more to say as a composer. This work, as well as the Clarinet Trio and the two Clarinet Sonatas were the result of this collaboration and friendship in the closing years of Brahms' life.
Wow. You usually don't find live performances living up to their best recordings, but, and especially the case with Shifrin's recording with the Emerson Quartet, this absolutely lives up to that quality. All I can say is, Wow. The dude's still got it in him to this day.
To Matthew Snyder, a heartfelt appreciation. Late Brahms( all Brahms!) is so special and so deserving of as wide an audience as possible. A wonder performance. UA-cam really can change the whole matter of classical music reach. kind regards
I am so glad that there is such magnificent documentation of this superb ensemble. Such beauty and complexity of sound.
His tone is liquid gold and so expressive! Wonderful!
absolutely fantastic playing. Great sound - Shiffrin really got it. Not often that a Boehm clarinet has such a warm deep sonorous sound, making it a bit mysterious and so romantic. AAA+ rating from me for this recording!
It's a clarinet in "A", not the somewhat shorter Bb model. The former has a bit more mellow sound although the reason for it's use in this score is to more easily navigate the keys Brahms used.
I love watching this cellist!
***** looks like james gandolfini
@@i9avici7a5 my first thought!
One of my very favorite pieces. Such noble melancholy.
Indeed. Brahms qua himself
AMAZING!!! Out of this world! Beautiful clarinet singing of David Shifrin and very well blended and exceptionally good balancing with the Guarneri quartet. Some may argue about too much of clarinet vibrato, but so was also Reginald Kell's playing, Pity, though, the whole quintet was not uploaded all in one go...
An exceptional recording of one of my favorite quintets ever, David Shifrin is amazing.
Wow. What an amazing performance!
Gracias por compartir este maravilloso quinteto. Soy de los que "leen y no ponen comentarios" pero formo parte de la multitud que te sigue, te lee y te admira.
Absolutely wonderful! Thank you for posting!
Thank you for uploading this wonderful performance.
Such warm, rich playing by all; the sound is so beautifully blended. Thanks for sharing this wonderful performance.
AMAZING. GREAT.
This is Beautiful. Look also at (amazing) "Complete Brahms Clarinet Quintet initial run through "
Felicidades a todos los intérpretes y a quien ha compartido este vídeo.
One of the greatest masterpieces. Full of warmth, Sadness and relxation.
Simpy spectacular.
I just wish that the 1st violin would look less serious.
+Mr. Nobody That's just Arnie. He plays divinely, though.
Bless your souls
I am very sorry - slow, enthusiasm lacking performance by old white men in inappropriate white Dinner Jackets - too long self-centered - never listening to what Sabine Meyer and the Alban Berg are making with that georgeous piece of music. Boring.
@@justusniemeyer3333 I listened many times the players when they were young, and know what they accomplished. True, this is not a youthful performance, but that makes it more touching to me. I want to be like them when I grow old.
WHY is there not the whole thing available? SO beautiful.
The videographer knows the score. When someone has a solo, you can see them playing it.
And that's the way it should be done.
Sensitively played.
Bravo David. I do the same nov. 22nd 2020:)
amazing
Shifrin knows Brahms!
Him and Sabine Meyer are my clarinet Gods.
God like.
Ah.... Bliss.....
lovely peformance not too fast
@vivascargill1 and what happened?
Perhaps you need to listen to it zrimusic.com style...
They sound so beautiful. I wish they were not dressed like bell-hops.
Very strange to my ears. Lethargic and with some very out of tune playing from Shifrin. If you doubt me try listening around 2.05. The A clarinet can be difficult to keep up to pitch in this work, particularly the 1st movement when the instrument may be cold. Nevertheless, at this level things should sound better than this. Maybe the recording doesn't help or the transfer has done something to the pitch. I would like to believe it sounded better in the hall.
you are wrong
+Walter Brewster Agreed and the strings seem a little weird to me...
Funny, was unable to locate any Walter Brewster music ANYWHERE. Just another ass on the sidelines.
Well, I am a professional clarinettist and maybe you didn't look too far. A shame you feel the need to descend into insults.
Imo it's within acceptable range
