I live for these legends... they paved the way and opened doors for the next generations in the gay community but a lot of gays don't have any respect for the old school and how it originally started. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have half of the rights that we do now.
I found the movie this past month on Netflix. Im the last person that would watch a movie like this, but its one of the best documentaries Ive ever seen. Sad their all dead , it deserves a post oscar haha.
I love you so much, Willi. We'll never forget you. You paved the way for us and we will ALWAYS love you for it. Hope you're still killin' it wherever you are. RIP. ❤️💋
AGING MYSELF HERE...I USE TO GO TO BETTER DAY, THE ORGINAL/FIRST BETTER DAYS ON 49TH ST( REMEMBER THE MOVIE AND NOT ONLY THAT BUT THE HUGE HONOR NYC TIMES AND ALL THE GIGANTIC NEWS PAPERS OF THAT TIME PAID HOMAGE TO THE LEGEND...WILLIE NINJA!!! I love you so much Willie 💜💐♾🥰 you left us so young and you still had so much to offer to contribute to this world. You made Paris burn baby! You made Madonna vogue! You have Rupaul the infamous sache chaunte! You gave us your legendary children Benny and J! The infamous choreographer child of yours! The house of ninja is still alive and well. Thank You so much for being you unapologetically 💐💜👑😘

He def. use to work the door at this club on 21st in Chelsea/NYC back in the day, the late 90s. I heard he was a famous dancer (I was on Broadway at the time), but I didn't really know who he was? Sound Factory Bar/ Cheetah. He NEVER gave me a problem at the door. Always let me in without a hitch. I watched him turn away many ppl too! I guess I was a privileged. R.I.P
I'm telling you if he had lived, he would have been a brilliant Celebutante. For some reason, I could see him working with A Fashion Designer like Marc Jacobs whipping the Models into Work, or ANTP, or even working with the Kardashians.
@biotechb I stand corrected. I saw this Documentary in the 1990's, and it really blew me away. You know what's so sad, so many of these people live what I call "The Tom Ripley Syndrome". In the "Balls" they are Stars, Somebodies and they have Status & Power. Yet when Sunset comes up, and the Balls end, they sometimes may feel like they are nobodies in the Modern World. To me nothing is further from the truth.
PLEASE EVERYONE GO RIGHT NOW AND WATCH CHISE NINJA VOGUE AGAINST DAVINA, CHISE WAS PAYING HOMAGE TO WILLI NINJA AND SHADING DAVINA AT THE SAME FUCKING TIME WITH THE COMPACT MIRROR MOVE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BATTLE!!!! CHISE SHOULD HAVE DEFINITELY WON THAT!!!
Can you buy this movie? This clip has me very interested. I've seen voguing but never really knew the origins. I'm really serious. If anyone knows how I can get my hands on this documentary, please let me know. Thanks :)
So is that really where "throwing shade" came from... from the shadow on the floor that your body made while vogueing?? And you threw better shade than the other person? Or was shade already a drag thing & it just got incorporated into vogueing...
@nochokin I'd like to think his dream came true, but I don't think it was that so much as it was Madonna hijacked it, made it something very different and took THAT into the mainstream. I think most people have some concept of what vogue is, but how many of them understand the concept of throwin shade or have ever even heard of Ninja? :/
Most of them died from HIV/AIDS which is really sad. I know this because I studied them in a folklore class and my teacher who is gay knew some of them and told us.
@Miscreant435 Sadly enough, with the exception of Fredie Pendavis, all of the participants are dead mostly of AIDS related diseases. This should have won an Oscar for Best Documentary.
Voguing to me looks like people going from one position to another one while posing for cover pictures of the Vogue Magazine. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn't.

I love when he does the vogueing against the tree with the compact and the makeup. So brilliant!

I keep reading they are all dead. Is that TRUE???
Most of them died from HIV/AIDS which is really sad. I know this because I studied them in a folklore class and my teacher who is gay knew some of them and told us.
yes they are
Everyone is not dead
Kim Pendavis and Junior LaBeija are still out there, but yeah, most of them have passed away.
Not true Kim Pendavis actually died in the early 90s please get your facts straight if you're going to post information
