- Hey UA-cam, This viddy is about How to transition patterns when you are playing live!
When you are dawless jamming your setup for live music production on stage, you'll encounter a common problem which is how to transition from one song to the next. I've done videos on this with my dawless setup before, but with a new setup come new ways of doing things!

This one was crunchyyy! Keep up the good work. Nice jam
Thanks! Will do!
Great vid and set up thanks 🙏 didn’t know about the midi track controller, re delay - I like the strymon Volante very much!
Thanks mate, your videos are ALWAYS informative. You know your stuff and its great that you share. CHEERS!
Thanks for watching the video and I hope you’re doing great! Don’t be a stranger!
Thanks so much for this video! It answers a lot of questions I had as my rig is quite similar. Love your work.
Glad it was helpful! Stay in touch!
thks for all !!! it was amazing as usual ;-))))
Cheers!
Thanks for the helpful vid. Timeline is a great pedal
Thanks 🙏🏾 I will check it out!
Awesome thanks👍😎
Thanks for watching
This video really did speak to me, thank you! I've been struggling with the right setup and looking at all the synths like an orchestra or band makes total sense. And as if by magic, a cheap MD12 just found its way into my hands :) Thanks again!
No thanks 🙏🏾. Is it going better already?
Absolutely! Adding the mixer made all the difference, and approaching it as if you're conducting multiple pieces
This was a great episode, I've scrubbed through it to pick up on the details.
Making sense of the kick drum and API Lunchbox:
1. Beneath the Strymon reverb and Roland Space Echo is an API Lunchbox. In the Lunch box, you have 4 modules: 2x Neve 1073 mic preamps, 1x API 525 compressor, and 1x API 550B EQ.
2. The main outs of your audio mixer go into the line inputs of the Neve 1073 Mic preamps, which then gets routed to the house.
3. The kick is coming from the Octatrack, and you have it internally routed out of one of its Cue outputs into the API 525 compressor and API 550B EQ. The treated kick gets routed back to channel 1 on the audio mixer.
I love having the kick on its own channel in the mixer. I use an older Mackie 1402, it has giant Mute buttons which make it super easy to enable/disable a channel without having to fiddle with faders. As a bonus, Mackie mixers routes muted audio to a separate audio bus, which can then be either patched into a separate strip on the mixer and eq'd or sent to Aux 1/2 , or to some outboard gear. It's a great way to quickly blast audio into a different path without having to fiddle with the Aux 1/2 knobs.
I hadn't thought of using the Cue outputs on my 1402 in the same way I might have on a dj mixer, but DUH of course I should.
You nailed it! That is the current setup indeed!
Great video, gave me lots of ideas for my setup! As a suggestion for a delay pedal: TC Electronic Flashback 2 X4, it's stereo, has lots of delay types, plus toneprints you can load, and most importantly midi in to sync the delay!
Thanks for the tip. Thanks for watching!
I have been using Eventide Pedals like the Ultratap and Micropitch Delays. Of course, I couldn't live without my BlackHole. All Midi compatible and stereo.
Nice one. I will check them out
31.37 wicked bass chief
Thanks 🙏🏾 John. We should link up this week mate
Syncing is oddly something that I find much easier in modular. As long as it's strong enough to trigger and uses the same language (s-trig vs V-trig), a gate is a gate and it happens at almost the speed of light😋
True! Thanks for watching! How things?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! For delay, MPC have very good effects as delay… It need to be processed by audio input on MPC… If you have multiple output like MPC live2 (maybe headphones output could work) you could use a lot of effects includes in your MPC
Thanks for the tips!
Mr Kitchen!! Played and epic DJ set last night and looking forrward ti integrating some live production into the set!
I jumped into this at around 15:00 and heard your request for delay pedal suggestions - (btw i also have a blue sky in my guitar setup which i love)
- i think for this setup a midi synced delay pedal would work best as will be completely locked in - i used to use an Eventide timefactor which is probably
what i would suggest for your hands-on tweaking but i found it fiddly to use on a foot pedal board so have moved to a TC electronic flashback X4 which is
simpler by foot.. i would get an eventide again though if i end up with a rig similair to yours as the sound is pretty magical especially if you use it in stereo
Thanks for all the vids - most useful - just about to switch on my Minitaur for the 1st time which i got a few weeks ago but have been too busy to play with yet :)
Speaking of magical machines! The Minitaur is one! Thanks for your comment!
PS Thanks Mr Kitchen! I got my minitaur going last night - very cool but im still finding my way with it - can you post a pic of your settings please, i just want a solid bass sound that i can tweak a litttle bit to taste :)
Nice one, another insightful lesson into live performance :) I've been considering a delay pedal over the last few months (Zen Delay too expensive and big for me!) , and the Boss RE-20 Space Echo has always been too big for me, and no sync/MIDI control. Someone on YT has removed the top pedals to save weight, which is a great idea. El Capistan is just another HQ Space Echo (with spring reverb), without sync/MIDI either. New Boss RE-2 is the same, but is tiny, like a normal Boss pedal size. New RE-202 is huge but amazingly programmable, with MIDI. The (soon to be released) Nux NDD-7 Tape Echo looks interesting if you do like the space Echo vibe, with lots of MIDI control/programming too (program it via app then standalone). And it's cheap! Available June/July I think. For me MIDI can save having to tap tempo after each song/track or whatever, and great for automating extra weirdness... good luck, I'm sure there are other amazing delay pedals out there. And always great te see your setup evolving and adapting to your needs :)
I hear you completely but what a lot don’t realize is that tapping the tempo makes for an extra live element that the crowd latches on to. So I love the percussive aspect of it
@@AnalogKitchen Great point! Now I think of it, messing with the delay tempo reminds me of Plastikman's organic wobbly goodness 😄 Gotta try it, got an EBS retracer delay pedal (badly designed software, terrible knob control, not intuitive at all but great engines for the price) and many thanks for taking the time to reply 😃
My next pedal on the list is Eventide Time Factor.
Oooooh, Nice one!
On the delay question - have you tried the Erica Synths/Ninja Tune Zen Delay? It sounds amazing and has a lovely filter and drive section.
Not yet. But I’m looking at it now
❤️❤️❤️❤️
So for a transition, you can remove synth patterns and add the synth parts of the new song
But for the drums you do a breakdown, like on 24:00?
I do a hybrid of midi mutes and physical muting. You could always make more patterns on the RK 008 and program other stuff there. Its setup to act as a songwriter but I use it as a scratch pad
once you learn PARTS and how to use xfader on Octatrack, transitions become much easier.
record loop into audio buffer, xfade to recording, change patterns on other gear, mess with your audio buffer, in whatever way is clever, xfade back over to new patterns playing, and if your settings are good, you just did eazy transition, made it sound complex, via lots of setup time. RAVE RAVE RAVE!
it's not easy to learn how to do this and set it all up.
Well. It’s doable indeed. I’m using my Octa slightly different but am also toying with the ideas of routing something back into it and looping it back out
@@AnalogKitchen i been thinking putting the master insert from a mixer to/from OT, so that i can use it just for looping and efx on the entire mix. Sending samples, loops etc thru cue output to it's own channel on the mixing board?
volume control on the video???
Noted
Schweeet !
Thanks you!
