Cool to see you enjoying my home flying site. Seeing you ignoring and violating airspaces not so fun though😮. I wish you had taken those more seriously. Launch site at Weissenstein has been closed for paragliders several times in the past because of rules and airspace violations. We locals then need to invest a lot of effort to get it back open and reastablish the trust. So next time ask the locals and inform yourself before launch. Sorry for being the nagative guy here. I am loving your videos but I also love that flying site😅. Keep the cool stuff coming!
Hey mate, thanks for that, such a awesome place to fly! Just to clarify when I was flying I had access to all the current airspace restrictions and I didn't breach any airspace during the flight. I know how complex things can get in order to maintain flying sites and I would never want to jeopardize that. If you have any more concerns please just send me a private message! 🙌
@@BenjaminKellett🙂 Hey Ben, nice video, It's my home flying site too, so in enjoyed it! Just wondering what app/instrument you used for the airspace restrictions? Because the one in the one in the west (Les Eplatures) you touched, needs radio contact to get trough. And the one above Weissenstein in the end, you need to check by radio or phone if TMA Basel HX is active. In case you didn't this could get dangerous because there are the big airliners flying around... 😮 Keep safe! 😀
@@BenjaminKellett I'm with Daniel here, you might have had access to the current airspace status, you might have checked all the NOTAMs before flying, but your narration is very clear here - that you did not check and will just fly through it because others did. Which is especially bothering as you have set this task beforehand and not just happened to be there out of luck. I know it's much easier to not care, people come, have fun and go, but the locals stay and pay the price later. I bet you wouldn't like your local areas being closed thanks to some tourists.
Thanks for the upload today Ben. I had a shit day at work so getting to come home, lay back on the couch when a glass of wine and get some therapy from Dr Kellet is absolutely what I needed. Perfect timing
Great video and flight. Thanks for advertising my home site, I live just under the Weissenstein and you made it look easy, which it is not always. Nice to see fellow Englishmen enjoying my backyard. Drop me a line if your heading this way again.
Hi Benjamin, it's Cédric @ SportsTrackLive. If you need to change color set to your profile it can be easily be done. Just let me know if you need help or have any request for the future (yes I'm a paraglider too while SportsTrackLive is not dedicated to this sport). Neat video!!
Man! What a great day out! Struggling at times but then you made it back. That feeling of being high when everything starts to glass off, the world laid out before you lit by the golden sunset, calm lift, the LZ in sight after a long day... if you could bottle that feeling you'd be a billionaire. One small request: seeing as how I'm a minor league pilot and a major league muppet, I struggle at times with working cloud streets. Your hyper lapse footage is very useful as I'm able to watch the clouds form and decay. However, what you often do, editing wise, is cut away just as you reach the end of a part of the street and I miss how you transition to the next part. Perhaps you could do a stand alone video sometime (similar to the "Getting Above the Cloud" one you did a while back) showing how you work the cloud streets in a bit more detail. Cheers.
Hey, you're not 'technically' talking to yourself in these... we're listening! Great vids as always. I noticed you're making a bit of an effort in explaining some of the PG jargon - any chance you'd make a bit of a show of your planning process and strategy in building your task of the day, terrain consids, etc? Something I'd like to learn more about. Either way, keep it up man, much appreciated!
Hey mate, another great vid. Just picked myself a brand new GT and cant wait. Can I ask how you have fitted the cam bracket, I have the vice grip but have no idea how people are connecting bars to the vice grip or camera? Any advice would be awesome. Thanks
Ah epic!! Such a class wing! 😎 I just clamp it to the carabiner then I have the “Insta 360 invisible selfie stick” that screw into a 1/4 thread onto the clamp. I’m going to make a video about it soon I promise!
Another fantastic XC flight, and extremely well shot/edited video! And I'm still mystified as to how you find such juicy thermals which take you up to 2000+ metres 😃 Maybe you have hawk eyes???
@@BenjaminKellett Hahaha 😂 That's a saying which fits our sport perfectly! I've also realised I need to expand the sites I'm visiting, if I'm going to rediscover the joy of XC from my days in Europe ☺️
I really like the XC Tracer, simple but effective, paired with flyskyhy it does the job and weighs next to nothing! I just have a selection of run of the mill power banks, nothing special. Mostly I take 2 x 10,000 mah but sometimes just one x 20,000 mah. It's enough for 2- 3 days of flying + filming.
As Always great video and great flying. Just servers as inspiration for my XC attempts. You make it look too easy I would say. One question if I may ask. That is the app you run on the phone to plan and execute the tasks? Cheers and keep doing you magic ✨
Hi Benjamin! I love this video! I also make some paragliding videos from time to time... and seeing your production, I wonder a few things: do you continuously record the 7 hours of video with the 360 camera? How many GB are needed? On the other hand, the camera you wear on the helmet, in addition to connecting the microphone to it, do you also have it connected to a power bank? And where do you put the microphone? When you edit the videos, is it difficult to synchronize the 360 video with the helmet video (sound and image)? Sorry for so many questions... 🙂
Hey, so I use a 512gb micro sd card for the 360, that's enough for 11 hours of filming, the gopro I don't use a power bank. i just turn it on for 1 minute at a time and it lasts all day. I have the new white "enduro" battery for it. It's pretty straight forward to sync the audio on Premier Pro, couple of clicks.
Ah in NZ I do for sure, just because I could end up somewhere remote. If I’m not planning on a night out then in just take the essentials. In the Alps mostly didn’t bother because I always knew I should be able to get back to the van.
hey man, some questions: how much practice does it take to become a capable XC paraglider? and is it risky/impractical to make paragliding trips like this in more remote regions such as peru or the himalaya?
Hey mate! Bit of a difficult question to answer to be honest because it’s very subjective to the person. Some people take it up faster than others, some take more risk than others. Paragliding is super dependant on the weather so as long as the weather conditions are good and your ability to make sensible decisions regarding risk is good you can use it to access some pretty remote places that make it far more practical than walking for example.
as nice as this video is, and the flight as well, I think saying out loud that you're not checking the airspaces or straight ignoring them, especially CTRs, is in a pretty bad teste. I can understand you don't agree with those airspaces being there, you simply don't care. But many flying areas have a very delicate arrangement with local authorities and some have been closed for paragliding exactly because of such attitude. So regardless of what you do in your flights, please at least keep such comments to yourself. 'He's worried about going in the cloud I guess, so I'll fly towards him...'! Classic line, really made me chuckle :)
