Nirvana - Sappy (In A Nevermind Kind of Way)

- Here's another part of the experiment.
An attempt to make "Sappy" sound like as if it was released on "Nevermind".
"In Utero" is my favorite album by Nirvana, music- and sound-wise. I've always been fond of the rough and honest nature of that album. An opinion that wasn't really shared by mainstream music listeners and even their own label and management.
There was always this thought in my head, what if the tracks on "In Utero" were mixed in the same way as on "Nevermind", clean-cut, slick and slighty over-produced.
Being an audio engineer for post production myself, I attempted to recreate the sound of each individual track, with an additional guitar track taken from the guide guitar track and vocal bits reused to create true double-tracking.
Well, technically "Sappy" is not really included on "In Utero", it originates from the same session though.
Here's the result, tell me what you think, I appreciate any feedback!
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to upload the entire remix due to UA-cam's/UMG's policies.
I'm not intending to break copyright laws, this is merely an experiment.
Nirvana played this at the very 1st show I'd ever seen them, at Bogart's, Long Beach, in early '90. Couldn't get the song out of my head for DAYS ... and it wasn't on BLEACH, so I had no idea what it was called. In those pre-internet days, it took real investigating to find this stuff out!
Haha i love stories like this...thank you!
How did you find out what the song was, man?
@@iamshaggy3587 he probably didn't until 1993. It is possible though because Kurt tried to record it with Sub Pop in January 1990 but it didn't turn out as good as he wanted. And since Nirvana bootlegs were everywhere, maybe some people in Seattle knew it was called "Sappy" but the bottom line is Cobain was such a great songwriter that he could captivate people like us by playing a song one time, and then just leaving without telling anyone the title lol
@@startervisions true true, thanks for answering!

I love this version. The snare is snappy, the tom is gone, the bass is up and the guitars are more level. Way way better. 10/10
The snare is *sappy
Too sad it's gone from Spotify for some reason
@@julianpottermusic The Sappy is snare
@@perkyydevilus4934 Sappy is still on spotify if i'm not wrong.
@@vandormael7962 other versions are. Idk maybe it's just the case for Spotify France.
I made a T-shirt from the thumbnail. You should see the confused looks. It's awesome!

Nirvana In Mind.
Please make more of these. I would like to see "aneurysm" and "You Know You're Right" on In Utero and "Sliver" and "All Apologies" on Nevermind. pleaseee!
No multitracks for Aneurysm have been leaked or "released" (with RockBand/similar). Other 2 may be possible.
aneurysm was a b side for a nevermind song, I think it might've been lithium
@@R04dny yeah plus it was also an Incesticide song too
Love this, it still baffles me to this day how this never made it onto Nevermind or In Utero, but Kurt apparently thought it ‘wasn’t finished’. Guy was the master of sloppy perfectionism. He threw out perfectly good songs, some of which are better than a couple that are on In Utero.
Sloppy perfectionism. Couldn’t have said it better.
like what songs?
@@mokat He never used several songs that never made it onto albums or anything officially released. A few that were unused or rare are on Incesticide but the ones that come to mind are Sappy, Blandest, In His Hands (which might have also been called Token Eastern Song and been on some Japanese singles, not sure), Return of the Rat, Junkyard and Talk to Me. Not saying all of those belonged on In Utero but they were great. I personally think Territorial Pissings on Nevermind could have been swapped out for a song they already had like Sappy, and lose either Milk It or Tourette’s from In Utero. As it is, I don’t think Tourette’s is better than a lot of stuff Kurt had already decided not to use.
@@KRSsven i agree. never really a fan of milk it or tourette’s. definitely felt as tho their non-album work, especially sappy, should’ve had better limelight
@@natelastname5472 Milk it is Horrible,Tourettes works fine for me especially Live at Reading 1992
This sounds so more energetic than the original. I think Kurt would have loved this. He said he wanted this to be poppier and I think you nailed it!
It's almost like hearing it for the first time all over again. Great job, man.
Cant Praise Him enough!
I pasted the chorus portion from chrous 2 to chrous 1, chrous 3 to chorus 1 etc, kurt was pretty consistent.
Its eargasmic and more than album worthy man. Thank you
The most professional remix of Sappy I've heard. Love how you supplemented the solo with extra guitar track. I put up my own mix. I wanted to make it more polished myself, though I didn’t go to the extent this does.
There actually is a sappy Nevermind version made by nirvana but it was never released on nevermind. It’s more slower then the original
That's "Smart Sessions." I like this fan version better than it, too. It's a fusion of Nevermind and In Utero, whereas Smart Sessions is just too mellow and un-energetic.
Sappy (In Utero) and this fan-mix just remind me of Live Nirvana, which is great.
Sappy was kicking around in the bleach era as well.
Kind of sad it had the chance to make it on either of the three albums and never did.
Great track.
▶️🙋♂️🎸
I think it's their best track. Or come as you are. I can't decide
@@Ghosty6464 Sappy from Sound City sessions also leaked few years ago. So we have the one from 1991 too
This sounds so good. It tastes like vanilla ice cream.
Sappy is already a very powerful and touching song. This version is dramatically boosted to another level
I can't believe that I'm liking this version more than the original version. I hope you keep up the good work!
This is the best version of this song I've ever heard! Amazing!
i remember first hearing this song and just being blown away, 20 years ago or something. this guy was from a different planet.
Thank you for this. You’ve made my favourite song from Nirvana sound the way I’ve been trying to get it to sound in my head. If you could please just extend the whole thing I would be very happy
You nailed it. I just can't say enough great things. I feel like we have all new Nirvana records thanks to you! Thank you!!!
I can't imagine this wouldn't have been an absolute hit had they released it as a single. I like the other version a Lil better. I can't hear the solo very good in this one. But Sappy is so fuckin underrated. Much of the world was and will probably always be deprived of this amazing song.
LOVE the reverb. Dude, you are doing some really cool experiments.
radio friendly unit shifter in neverminds style?
I don't think that's possible.
+wwfwrestlingfan4ever Of course it's possible. There is also a 1991 version of that song, recorded along with Nevermind stuff too :P
+Jacek K What he means is that there's no multitracks available for RFUS. Only Sappy, Very Ape, an early version of Pennyroyal Tea and the majority of MV are available as multitracks.
That guitar sounds so beautiful, oh my god-
This sounds so crispy clear.
Oh! .....Hell yeah!
This is the best version I've ever listened, excelent job
Gone just like a fever dream wish this was the entire song I love this fan creation so much
Absolutely awesome! Great remastering job, wow! You're definitely a pro!
OMG! Love it! The sound... amazing!!
Wow, well done! This is going to be my version of this song to listen to from now on!
the sad down tempo Drain You . Loved it the first time I heard it and here I am tonight still rocking out.
Im telling you guys, This guy should be hired to remaster nirvana songs
I really enjoy this arrangement
Beautiful
This is the best version of sappy I have ever heard in my life, I want to see more from you
very great this song, and the cover mixed with nevermind and in utero makes it special
what a beautiful cover
to an unusual song
Can't you please upload a link of a non fade out version to download, if youtube won't let you post it?
Terrific this is, I'd love to listen to this version more often.
This sounds amazing.
Jesus, this is incredible.
Awesome work!
Damn this version just sounds even better if you ask me.
Sounds better then I thought it would have. Well done!
Far out!!!Love it.
wow dude these are really good very refreshing please keep it up !
Heavenly
This is some of the coolest stuff I have ever hear. I always dreamed to of hearing exactly this scenario. I wish there was a way to hear it all.
these remixes (is that the right word) are great. thanks for posting.
Can't believe this is 10 years old already.
Still my #1 favorite mix of this song
This sounds unbelievable. I have to say I prefer this version over the original. I'm going to listen to it five more times in a row now.
amazing guy, congratulations on the work
Best version
This is the best version of this song I’ve ever heard
While it needs more reverb while somehow making the whole thing sound super thin for that super accurate early 90s mainstream rock sound you totally nailed the stylish dark atmosphere of the album, which I feel comes more from the production than the songs themselves so well done!
I honestly think this mix may be better than the actual mix on Nevermind. It honestly blows me away and has become my reference track for guitars
sounds amazing dude.
I love this so much wow
Great mix!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I love this.
Wow they even doubled the chorus like butch always wanted to
It sounds like it belonged on the album..... fantastic job on this re-master! probably the best one! I always wondered how the solo would sound double-tracked though....
Of all versions I've heard of Sappy, this is definitely the one I stick to. Glued to it.
I don't know if everyone here knows, but sappy was actually recorded at sound city during the Nevermind sessions
👍Amazing Kurt,nice voice,sound🎸R.I.P.Kurt✝️🎸
thank you
AMAZING
Good job !!
I have the stems for Stay Away, On A Plain, SLTS, Territorial Pissings, On A Plain, Lounge Act and MV
they're online anyways
Raw or processed?
@@rockboy360 processed, MV, Sappy, and an alt take for Pennyroyal Tea were raw tracks.
holy shit this is amazing
wish there wasnt a fade out though because this is easily my most favourite version of the song :(
Brilliant!
Best solo so fucking crazy
Instant favourite.
Agreed. Amazing
Epic Echoes!
BEST SONG EVER!!!
Wow, this sounds so much like a Nevermind track with this mix... reminds me a bit of the mixing on Drain You!
nice work
Thanks for giving this classic the Butch Vig studio treatment.
Thanks for this.. Interesting experiment.
Man this is absolutely brilliant. I've tried myself a million times to mix those 24 wave tracks in a "Nevermind" way, but never get something as satisfying as this, the youtube audio encoding is a bit muddy though :(
Please do more tracks!!
It was made on Nevermind, during the Smart sessions. It's the best version imo, it follows a very mellow vibe rather than the loud smells like teen spirit vibe seen everywhere else.
i love it
good job
Great job dude
I like it
Awsome
dude you did a fuckin awesome job and all these songs! you really should post the whole song though. definitely a worthy download
Send me the full version please.
FAWESOME
I fuckin love this version.
The vocals on the chorus sounds a little "doubled", and i liked it
Holy shit this is really good
phenominal remix and remaster, best of this ive ever heard until it cuts out early. get in touch with Courtney if you can and see if she'll release it
They actually recorded it on the final Sound City Studios recording session but it's never been released and there are fakes on UA-cam (people putting filters on the In Utero one or the Smart Studios one, etc)
It's been recorded in a couple different places actually c:
Sappy is the longest-running unreleased track I can think of, there's recordings of it dating back to early '88 and it was meant to appear on Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero, but unfortunately wasn't released on any of them because Kurt was never happy enough with the song. A live version can be found on the Bleach 20th reissue though.
Todd Dawson-Cooper Very True
Would you like the Sound City version? I can't upload it on UA-cam due to copyright, but I can send it to you.
It was officially released on No Alternative in 1993 as the last song, it isn't listed on the track listing and Nirvana was not credited, but it's there and it's the best version they recorded.
this track reminded kurt to much of drain you so he didnt put it on the album:) comment on the video: great work men! really liked the mix, I heard the bass never in this way. really nice bassline
Do a few more of these with this band
Its better its better wtf good job
Nice.
Can't wait for more :3
sounds like it should of been on nevermind
Kurt originally wrote the song in 1990.
1tobedoneX It's actually much older than that; around 1987.
From those days I personally love the Old Age version from With the Lights Out.
ua-cam.com/video/a2_pWVfTCt4/v-deo.html
i guess you could say it should've
been a son
Should of put normalising compression on the kickpedal so the hits are consistent.
Otherwise, it's astonishing, I love all of these remixes!!
It would be cool if you made more of these
WHAT THE FUCK IS THE SOLO HOLY SHIT
i know, it just sounds extremely good in a nevermind-way
TastyFecal it sounds the exact same to me idk what y’all are talking about
