David Byrne dancing is one of the things in life that make me so happy. He just fills me with delight when he's totally in his own zone dancing. And it's like an invitation of some kind, like we are presented with the dance in all its precision and urgency , it says you can make space in the world for you rather than trying to fit somewhere. So, when he is dancing it is always a giddy liberation.
Yes, and if you have ever seen him live, you know it's almost impossible to pass up the invitation. Byrne is walking (and, yes, Talking) proof that, if you do something with enough authority, even dorky dancing and shaggy hot pink suits, it becomes cool.
You still can, nothing stopping you except perhaps a genius creative ability and energy but hey, nothing is actually impossible because the entire universe is just a simulation.
Stop Making Sense, by far the greatest Rock and Roll movie ever made. I saw it 7 times in theater purchased the vhs and saw it another 30 times and now own it on dvd. So original!!!
Maybe the audience just wasn't ready for this shit! We can look back on it now almost 15 years later and say yeah I would of been going crazy..but David Byrne seems to have habit of being ahead of his time, considering this song was already about 15 years old at the time.
I’m just hella impressed with all of that kinetic dancing in his totally-buttoned-up furry suit. That’s some impressive devotion to fashion, but I’d expect no less. Edit: ah wait, I spoke too soon. But he used the lyrics, “open up!” to cue taking off his jacket. Smoove! BTW, this is pretty much my favorite Heads song. What a wicked groove!
It bums me out the crowd is so quiet, but I think that's a convention of 90's concert shows. They want the focus on the performer, not on the crowd, when really the energy from both should feed off one another. I get the feeling if they filmed something like this now, the crowd would be going nuts.
I read that because these were basically Sony label corporate shows, all the "audience" were label execs and a few friends and family. They see big shows and artists all the time and have become numb to amazing performances. I loved this show, though. Some performers were able to overcome the bland reactions, or they tried to egg on the audience because they were so zombified. Check out the Ben Folds Five episode for an absolute killer performance.

there were two pieces of music i heard as a 12/13 year old that utterly stopped me in my tracks, I didn't even know if i liked them or not, i just knew id never heard anything like them and i was entranced, one was 'the message, grand master flash and the furious five', the other was 'once in a lifetime, talking heads' which i saw accompanied by the promotional video. I remember exactly where i was when i first heard themThey has such a huge impact on me
This is my favorite live version of this song. I like it better than the version in "Stop Making Sense," if only because the time signature is slower. It's just so, so cool.
I personally prefer the stop making sense version more, not just because of the incredible musicianship that was but also because of the authenticity of the whole performance
This guy has some wacky moves. But i love his dancing. His effort is total, his music flawless. He attended the same music school as the frontman of the b-52's. Funky and wacky at the same time. But brilliant.
fucking awesome. visually as well as aurally interesting, classic david byrne. anyone know what that keyboard/slide guitar instrument playing the solo is called?
the story of our lives and also, simultaneously and improbably, our greatest ambition in one song. is there a more emblematic byrne performance? "we sing in the darkness!"
When I first saw Talking Heads in 1983 as an 11 year old I didn't think David Byrne was real
simon richardson he isn't real
simon richardson .... He Isn't Real.... He's Surreal !!!!!!..
This is the best comment on UA-cam ever
@Christine Gralow All of you need to transvestigate, they were both female to male transgendered like all musicians, actors and politicians.
1984 discovered talking heads .drove all over Europe listening to classic music like this .

I wanted to be David Byrne when I grew up.

That backup singer is FIRE 😍
in case anyone was wondering:
christina wheeler, bruce kaphan on keys, rea mochiach at the back, desmond foster on bass
Good to see them credited. They more than deserve it. This is one hell of a performance. Electrifying.
I was wondering who the keyboard player was at first I thought Brian Eno

Do not agree
what’s better than that?
@@seth5394 nothing is better than that.
Is it?
I don't get how the audience can remain seated through this. Get up and dance, people.
Ah now I understand, Chis and Tina's roll in Talking Heads was to keep David on planet Earth.
Freaking fantastic🎶

I just realized I dance like David
i like how this implies that jerry's role is still just to look cute
@@tapeworm6093 I do, a little, myself. not as much precision, or rhythm, but with a similar sensibility in relating to the music kinetically.
Never ever ever ever get tired of this version of this song. "I'll show you how to do it, ya'all can do it later..."
So David Byrne does this, it’s considered cool. I do this, I get escorted out of the library.
Massive Upps! Great Comment! Just kidding whatt is " Library"
Byrne is unreal
He is completely mad but OMG I just love it ! David Byrne has his own very special moves.

It was a sit-down , made-for-TV performance, I don't think the crowd was supposed to do anything other than enjoy it.

they were stricken by covid and didn't even know it!
One of my favorite Byrne performances, really nails the joy of Talking Heads here
With all of the visuals and the dancing, you just don't expect that steel guitar solo--truly unique.
this is unnerving. *i love it*
His movements, even talking is cartoon like! Long live David Byrne & TH's!
I can’t stop watching this
He walks that fine line between outrageous and insane - and we happily follow

Where can I get a Barney suit like the one David's wearing? He showed me how to do it so I really want to do it latter.
