I dunno if you guys had friends like this, but the first guys I ever played music with could do as Slint did, just sit with a groove or a jam for an hour, messing around until it made sense. I played with these same dudes last fall and fell right into the same thing, which was neat, but I’ve noticed it doesn’t work in the same way with others. It’s more piecemeal where someone has a specific vision rather than a group of minds taking an idea and evolving it.

@@storaxsedan2076 - When it works, there’s almost no better feeling. There’s something so neat about a group of people all adding their bits to something greater than the parts. As a bassist, you can often vibe back and listen, as much of holding a groove is doing the same thing again and again, changing every 8 or 16.

Been obsessed with Spiderland since Albini awarded'Ten Fucking stars' in the Melody Maker.
But it was Squirel Bait that started it.
I went all the way to Louisville because of them - part of a road trip on a visit from England, years ago now
Spent the afternoon in a bar ( The Mag Bar?) with some wonderful folk and winded up seeing Lucero. I could drone on way more...

Oh man, I made the trek to Louisville with some friends in '95, all the way from Melbourne, Australia! We pulled up at the address in the Spiderland liner notes in a pretty dodgy looking Dodge Ram, just wanting to take photos. There were some curious faces looking back out at us from the windows inside, so we freaked out and bailed. I hope we didn't freak them out too much! It's interesting to compare/contrast this interview with, say, Henry Rollins' interview with a 14 year-old punker in '83. They are similar in that the interviewee becomes the interviewer, but other than that, they're just about the polar opposite: ua-cam.com/video/o-xMkHgan0Y/v-deo.html It's nice to see Britt connect with Matthew, and it fits very much with the unassuming nature of Slint. Four very young guys manage to create music that was decades ahead of their time, and it's endearing how they don't even really know how they did it to this day.

as far as acdc goes, in 1980-82 acdc was not widely accepted mainstream, back in black was massively successful yes, u didn’t see them on the grammys being introduced by pop stars. they were more mysterious that album is great. you would see their records at target for example but I was the only kid & 2 others who liked them everyone else was into rush & metal, they didn’t think of acdc as metal. acdc totally lost the handle after for those about to rock.
