Simply superb in every way. Elegant, charming, wonderfully sung, first-class on every way.

Sometimes seeing early Joan is like stepping into an earlier, nicer age. Many thanks for the upload.

The flutist is Alexander D. Murray. He played in several orchestras and taught at Michigan State University and University of Illinois in the U.S. He currently lives in London.

Seeing this and other performances from early in the international career, it’s hard to reconcile with the view from 10 years before, when she was considered gauche and clumsy. Think how hard this great lady worked to look so graceful and serene. While she was developing that supreme voice, she also managed to find a Romantic “plastique” for her body. It must have taken keen observation, lots of direction, and a ton of hard work. What a transformation she, with help, achieved!
