    My father was a blasting engineer for Hercules powder company for 40 years. He took me to many open pit mines in the south west US. We all hid behind a monstrous shovel when certain shots were detonated. We were less than a quarter mile from the blast site. I was 14 years old. At that time in the mid fifties they used a magneto powered blasting machine to generate enough electricity to set of the blasting caps. At times I would get to operate the blasting machine which required three or four pumping strokes to. Build up the electrical charge and then a final full stroke on the plunger

    Continued from above-- the final stroke sent the full electrical charge down the blasting wires at a speed of three miles a second. Even though the explosives were timed to follow each other in sequence the speed of the charge was so fast the explosion seemed to happen all at once. Part of the explosive was twenty five pound cartridges of Gelamite which were about three feet long and eight inches in diameter. The rest was a nitrogen slurry that was pumped into each hole and then soaked with diesel fuel . The nitrogen slurry soaked in diesel fuel was the main explosive, the cartridges provided a really powerful blast which was necessary to detonate the slurry . The slurry was the explosive used to blow up the federal building in Oklahoma City. That was about a thousand pounds of slurry in the back of a pick up truck. We were detonating about 100,000 pounds of slurry in most open Pit mining operations. Surprisingly the blasts were not loud because the holes filled with the explosive went down fifty feet or so. The blasts were designed by my father to shatter and lift about a million tons of earth and rock which then was removed and sent for processing to extract the iron ore.

      The Marion 8200 was always my favorite machine to erect. As an old Marion erector I was fortunate enough to have been the erector on 6 model 8200s and have erected at least one of every model that Marion produced from the early 1970s through the company's end. That would include all the Shovel, Drill and Dragline models.

    • @MegaDonns
      @MegaDonns 3 роки тому +1

      Yes you can still order a new Dragline if you want. However most people are seeking out old machines to move and refurbish at their sites. Joy Global, Komatsu can still build you one of the P&H machines. They got into the walking Dragline business when they purchase Page Engineering back in the late 1980s. The first P&H Dragline was still using the last Page 757 model number but incorporated the new P&H waking system (which I love calling a Marion system just to tweak my friends at P&H.) The reason this machine is a 757 model is because it was originally sold to the British Coal Board just before the Page takeover by P&H. P&H kept the 757 model number for this one machine and then went to their own model numbers for machines after that one. FYI, I was involved with moving this 757 Dragline from England to Mississippi. It was changed a lot from the original and is probably the most (ore at least one of the most) technically progressive machine out there. Cat purchased Bucyrus International and will sell you a new Dragline. Bucyrus had previously purchase the Ransome Rapier group in something like the late 1980s or early 1990s. Bucyrus then purchased Marion Power Shovel co. in 1996. Later Cat purchased Bucyrus International and wound up with the whole shooting match. The cat adverts mostly feature a Marion 8200 Dragline, a Bucyrus 797 Rope Shovel and an O&K Hydraulic Shovel plus Terex equipment, which they acquired in all their shopping expedition's. The Russians still make small walking Draglines but these would mostly be custom built machines and rarely sold outside Russia except maybe to India. There are actually companies out there that have the capability of supplying a walking Dragline structure and companies that can supply Motors and control systems. I won't mention the names of these companies because I don't know that they would want me to. There are still a lot of old Marion guys, like me, and old Page or Bucyrus guys roaming about out there with some good knowledge stored in their addled brains so a new machine is entirely possible - should anyone have a spare $100M +/- laying about to purchase one.

    Draglines of this size are bought in a million pieces from companies like P&H and others. All the pieces are then loaded on massive long haul trucks and train cars for delivery to the closest spot adjacent to the open pit project. Dozens of factory trained technicians then assemble all the parts and test the machine. All this could take a year or more to complete. Depending on the size of the project the drag line could work the same pit for twenty years of more. At the end of its useful life it will be moved to an out of the way spot at the bottom of the pit and left to eventually be covered by water as the pit fills over the decades. Eventually it will be forgotten as the company moves to another project and a brand new drag line. The same scenario is repeated over and over again.
