I had the pleasure of climbing around on this dragline to inspect the ropes. Impressive machine and still digging!
So much history and cool machines around here. I remember as a kid hearing all the drags and ucs clanging banging and beeping 24/7
Only two 8700's were ever built. It is hard to give a good size comparison of just how big these walking draglines are. To actually build a machine of this scale would take a couple years! Thanks for the compliment!
Thanks. the inside tour gives you a good idea of how this machine operates. This machine weighs a little over 5,000 tons.
I grew up around draglines and worked as an electrician on 7900 and 8900 models at the Moura Coal Mine in Queensland in Australlia.
The second 8700 was owned by Peabody Coal, who later parted it out and scrapped the machine after it was devastated by a fire.
To answer your second question, when the machine is engaged into the propel mode, the shaft that connects the two shoes together rotates clockwise, pushing both shoes down onto the ground at the same time to pick the back of the dragline up off the ground and slide the entire machine backward. Each rotation is referred to as a "step" for the dragline.
When this retires I hope to god it doesn't get cut up ....save the dam thing for history
David Mccully that's what thy should have done with big musky
You know your stuff bud
Good video. The machine looks huge when you get on it. Very impressive.
Very unique = Very one of a kind This dragline is very one of a kind.
Thanks for the videos, I live in Northern Ontario and we have a lot of mining equipment, mostly hard rock mining but nothing quite like this. I am a Machinist and we rebuild a lot of rock trucks etc.... I am glad that big Marion is still running! I like your videos and find them very interesting.
I actually got up close to this machine in 1999. I remember seeing cotter pins on it like 3" in diameter! Since then they've given it a beautiful paint job.
I know a guy who operated the other 8700 for Peabody here in Indiana. Pretty incredible machines.
amazingly light/little steel in the support work on top.
Just a giant sheet metal building with machinery in it.
The lower levels, gear and house lock at the bottom are probably the most impressive
You could fit an entire office building inside that machine! I really have learned much from you and enjoyed you're videos immensely. I especially like the old excavators that you find. Thank you for doing what you do. The only thing you may want to do that might help is to get a windscreen for the microphone on you're camcorder.
Very informative and I like the film
great video thanks for poisting
OK thank you very much for these answers.
This is an older video, I don't even film with this camera anymore. All my current videos are shot in HD
I worked on a 8750 in terra haute indiana at bearing. Weld build on two swingers, weld repair on the boom and new super lugs. New bull gear on the right side propel.
Peabody *
I thought Peabody Bear run only had Bucyrus 2570 and 2550 when did they get a Marion 8750
@lozarok Yep, Marion was the best. Yeah I personally don't care for seeing a CAT label on a dragline, but you see what design are still keeping with building today- Marion.
You know a lot, nice job
Love your vids, looks like vagrants have set up shop in this machine
Humongous wow. What dose this weigh and how is this moved from factory to site, in pieces ? Impressive 🚜👍
Thank you for a good video and informative explanation! How many operators are typically required to run this equipment?
Hi PAmining,
I had not realized there was only two of these. ok. Pretty damned unique eh?
Congrats on a wonderfully shot and detailed video on this enormous machine. One can see it is large obviously, but to actually stand tight up against the side and look up, gives some idea of just how huge this is, and everything is heavy, No 'padding involved in the making of this at all, only exactly what is necessary?
Many thanks for the upload!
Take care,
mrbluenun
Very good video im impressed I want more videos go for marion the captain and bucyrus big muskie they was once the kings of mineing
Walking building, machine shop, warehouse.
That's an impressive size machine. Great walk around i also enjoyed the inside tour. any idea of how many tons this beast weighs.
Left dazed and confused in awe with drool mouth wide ajar then I woke up and uncrossed my shutters 😜
Your welcome!
Hello this is very impressive. I have two questions: 1. What happend to the other one? You explained it but my English is not good enough... 2. How does it move? You mention the shoes but how does it actually work? Thank you.
You must be pretty healthy you didn't even breath hard when you went up all those stairs!
I didn't notice that at first in this video but you're right. I did notice in another video where he is driving a truck you can see his hand on the wheel and it's all wire and muscle. Of course most miners in their prime are very rugged guys. I've never heard of farmers, loggers or miners having to go to the gym after work.
How many years does it take to build one?
@PAmining For sure mate , when bucyrus took over Marion they never made any BE's ; ) Marion Rules!!!!
Thanks. It is huge lol
What do pull this machine out with if it gets stuck? lol
Great Vid Mate, Marions were the Go !!!! its a shame Draglines are now CAT , it is so wrong
Another proud product of the great state of ohio!
Badass
