    I bought my 1023e about a year ago and I continue to come here as a guide to understanding the fundamentals of these machines. Today I learned that there is an override switch for going backwards.
    Update:
    I just mowed and can definitely share that I saved 20-30 minutes of cut time because I used the PTO override. The smallest things can make the biggest difference. Thanks, Tim!

    Mr. Tim. . . . . one of the best ideas ive had to use on steep or uneven terrain, was i attached my backhoe attatchment & used the lowest outrigger pad for stability as well as swing around & use the backhoe arm boom & bucket for stability as well.

    I love my 1025R. The only issue I had was the reverse shut off BS switch. That is the only issue I see with this tractor. But a short utube video a zip tie and not having to cut or splice any wire. Reverse mow is no longer a problem. It only takes about 10mins from start to finish. And does not void any warranty. Now I love it 100%

      Tractor Time with Tim , Yes I do believe people would pay for a hands on class. First time buyer’s can be intimidated by all the different functions a tractor can perform. As you have pointed out in your videos it’s not just a lawn mower. Safety would have to be paramount in overall operation. Your vast experience makes it look easy but we know that comes from seat time. In the last two videos I saw that young mans confidence grow as he actually used the features A small class say 3 or 4 at $100 per head for 4 hours of instruction. This is a small price to pay when one is considering a $20,000 purchase. Of course all of this is just my humble opinion.

    My back yard too has some dips in it where my 60d cuts uneven where my 54d didn’t. I figure fill in the low places or live with it.... In a perfect world I’d have a JD zero turn AND my 2025r as I haul wood, push snow, landscape and mow. But I’m not wealthy and this world isn’t perfect and for a multi task tractor I’m very pleased with everything it does.

    • @Chris_In_Texas
      @Chris_In_Texas 4 роки тому +1

      That is the argument for smaller decks vs larger. I went for the 60" vs the 72" on my ZTR mower. If there is uneven ground the smaller deck won't lean as much causing the unevenness in cuts.

  • @cwolf8841
    @cwolf8841 4 роки тому +4

    Some folks believe that mowing short looks good, but the grass leaves are what feeds the roots.
    Short grass is going to die out faster in AUG IMO.
    Consider adding clover to feed the grass, too.
    I believe the RIO switch is more dangerous than the issues of mowing over stuff (especially the older version).
    If you're working on a hill, the RIO can become a major problem.
    Rear wheel spacers can make a significant difference in stability.
    :)

    This was one of the best comprehensive vids showing how the disconnects and reconnects function. I'm currently researching compact tractors so I can purchase one this Spring after the mud season here in Vermont. I have to mow about 3 acres of steep terrain (over a 25% grade) and my Cub Cadet XT2 is just not cutting it (pun intended). Since I really want the ability to utilize a bucket, belly mower and brush hog I think this JD 1025R fits the bill for my needs. Thanks again for the demo and I'll be sure to have the dealership let me test one out before I purchase a new one. Thanks for sharing.

    If I was buying today I would change some things. I got my 1025r in late 2018 and these were not out yet, but I would have the R3 tires rather than the R4's and would have had the front diverter valve installed so I don't have to worry about it later. I would buy with the tractor anything that requires it to go back to the dealer for like the front or rear diverter valves or engine block heater, etc. My dealer didn't charge anything for install if bought with the tractor and if you can afford it, that is the time to do those things. Get the attachments later on cheaper. I got the full package with TLB and 60" mid mount mower. I didn't want to pay for the backhoe, but I had some plans for it and always wanted one so I got it to have. The 0% for 84 months helps out a lot! Also, don't forget the loadngo! Very nice! Easy install and can be bought later.

    I have the same reverse switch on my d120 mower... it’s so annoying. Instead of looking behind me to see what’s going on I gotta find the button and mess with that. So I got wired it so the mower always thinks it’s pressed and then I some more work and repurposed the button for a car horn. Ever since I did that it has made life much easier.

    A couple Kubota BX differences. Center scalp wheel on 60" deck, standard. Backing up while mowing, no button to push.

    Ha Tim, thus I'm having my 1025R, I never knew about the push and run your PTO in reverse..... great video, I really enjoy those detailed videos, you (I) learn a bunch on the things you point out! My peeve really is, that compared to my flail mower, my belly mower cut perfectly on a billiard table flat soil, but as soon as a dip comes, it either scalps or I get stuck, because it got hung up on the following ridge. We've a larger septic mountain and to feel a tad more at ease, I've installed 3" spacer, made a world of a difference!!
    One tip though, I never go off my shed with Johnny, w/o it "wearing" the front loader. Saved me numerous times to dig myself out of the spring season wet soil.

      Same thing for purchasing ATV's and UTV's, any of them can drive across a paved parking lot...its what kind of work and how much of it can they do at once, and can they get through the slop is what's important. My Cub Cadet XT1 lawn tractor you simply turn the ignition key and press a button to enable reverse mowing, and it stays there till you are finished or you turn the key to disable it...and just about every time I mow my lawn the first time I backup I'm reminded of that LOL.
      I like the BX but don't have a mid mount mower for it....yet. Was supposed to be in my original purchase package and salesman forgot to include it....so at some point I'll have to go buy one, but I have a lawn tractor so not in any hurry to spend another $2500 for a mower deck.

    I always appreciate the content. However to go from dissing the bx for not having a drive over deck to showing having to use plier to connect the couplings on the 1025r without a mention of the Kubota quick attach coupler is hypocritical.
    To each their own, but my loader comes on and off every time I mow my grass. The mower deck only comes off when I am getting into some “heavy” dirt work.
    I wish my bx23s had the turning radius of the 1025r, wish I had lift of the loader. But the lower overall height of the rops allows me to store the tractor and scoot under trees better. Lower rops combined with the ease of removing the loader and backhoe swing over to the kubota.

    Does the 2038R mow faster than the 1025r? The issue we have at the farm is hills with the ZTR. Musing about the next go around, just getting one of the Korean small tractors with no loader or anything for mowing (keeping the 5000 series with loader), as it's about the price of a new ZTR, has 4wd, and will probably last 2.5-3x the hours. It's a trade-off between mowing time vs. traction, which turns into mowing time. Having to go around and just now up a particular slope, Because if you face the ZTR down it, it'll slide down uncontrollably. I'm not sure there is a perfect solution, but will be looking at that new Cub ZTR with the steering wheel, as well.

    • @southpawxj
      @southpawxj 4 роки тому +1

      I'm not Tim, but maybe I have some experience here.
      I live on 3 acres with the house on a large, pretty steep hill (I don't exactly know the grade of the hill) and only have an old Dixon 50" ZTR. It depends on the steepness of the hills and the size of the steep part. I mow probably 98% of the yard with the zero turn even with some pucker factor. However, I have a lot of experience with the machine (been mowing on it since 2004) so I know when I am close to the limit. Experience is important in that. That being said, the other 2% of the yard is hills that go into the neighboring properties and are both too steep and have fences at the top meaning the only option is side hilling. I tried that a few times, and while I'm still alive and it didn't tip over, I don't want to tempt fate again. I could do it in one pass with the 50" deck but it was sketchy. After leaving it to grow up for a month plus every year and then chopping it down with a weed whacker, I finally bought a cheap battery-powered mower from Home Depot. That little push mower handles it well and keeps it from turning into a snake habitat.
      Tractors are more durable, but some zero turns can last a while. I don't treat my zero turn nicely and I've used it for things it shouldn't have been used for because it's the only power equipment I have. I've dragged big piles of limbs off with it, pulled a lawn sweeper that swept the entire 3 acres once (that's what I get for not mowing for a month and boy, it didn't like doing the entire yard pulling that sweeper)... It's still here 16 years later and starts pretty easily. I probably have 1000 hours on it (it never had an hour meter) over that time. Some people get some insane (10,000+) hours out of them.
      It really depends on how you want to spend your time and which one will be faster. I mowed this same property for my grandpa before 2004 using his Yanmar GT14, and while it was a sweet machine it took forever to mow. The Z literally cut the time in half, and it's only going about 6-7 mph at full sticks. I'd also maybe test a few different brands and styles of Z on your property before ruling them out completely (unless you're hills are insanely steep). Dixon mowers (as far as I know) weren't known for holding hills well, but this one works for me. Grasshoppers, and specifically the front mount ones, seem to be well-regarded for hillside stability.
      Ultimately, get what you want and have fun with it. When the Z dies I'm going to probably switch to a SCUT just for the added benefits of the tractor, but I'll miss being able to mow my lawn in 2 hours.

    • @southpawxj
      @southpawxj 4 роки тому +1

      Another option (if the Z is too sketchy for you and since you're only looking at mowing really) would be an X7 series from Deere. They cost a lot, but they seem (to me, at least) to be more nimble than a SCUT. Specifically one of the mowers with 4 wheel steer like the x734, 739, or 754 (the diesel).

    • @bartonmd
      @bartonmd 4 роки тому +1

      @@southpawxj ZTRs typically take am engine and hydro motors at around 1000hrs in pro use. Less in the hills, but more if they aren't run hot all day every day, so we figure about 1000hrs is typical. That's around 6 years for us. diesel tractors last in the 3000hr+ range. We try to mow as much with the 5320 as possible because it rides much better and burns a ton less fuel than the Scag. Between both sides of the road, my uncle being on the other side, there is probably a total of 25-30 acres mowed, but some of it only a couple times a year. Some of the hills are 35-40% grade in sections, but not largely. 20-25% is common. The grasshopper style is also an option. When my Grandpa went from the 1050 Deere to the 5300 years ago, he also got a JD riding mower which became nearly worn out in like 2 years, so I don't see a riding mower in our future. It'll either be a small tractor with a belly mower or some pro-class mower or another.

      @@bartonmd Man, that's a lot of grass! There's a ton of options out there. Yeah, my ZTR beats the crud out of me if I'm trying to cut too fast. I wish I had some sort of suspension seat or suspension in general so I could not get beat up. How wide of a mower do you run on the 5320? It's funny to think of a ztr as a trimming mower but that seems like what you're doing there.

    I am considering this for my 3 acres. But I’m worried the weight of the machine and industrial tires would just be bad for the lawn with regular weekly use. The wheel paths would eventually compact an make ruts. Then the grass would die. I’ve seen this in yards the have pros cut their grass. They use heavy ZTRs and this is the result. I’m in central Indiana/Illinois area with typical sandy topsoil and average grass/weeds. My yard is no golf course. But it looks great when it’s mowed.

      @@TractorTimewithTim Thanks Tim, I saw that one (ua-cam.com/video/-Z8DhTXBYnI/v-deo.html) but was holding back because of the finance committee and because it seemed like it'd interfere with a diverter valve for a 3rd function (at the very least I'd need to separately disconnect the electrical every time - which seems like the kind of thing I'd forget to do). The tease at 16:12 made me hope you might have something coming to help with both my problems :)
      I've been thinking I can probably get by without the 3rd function for a grapple (and maybe snow blade) just using pallet forks/bolt on hooks and chains instead (given the kinds of stuff I tend to do anyway) so it might be a moot point - but if I had the option down the road all the better. Between the two I think I actually think I'd prefer the single-point connector given how much I take the loader on and off. Maybe if I decide down the road to get a grapple I might be better served just getting a rear remote (from summit hydraulics) and some long hoses instead of a diverter (since I already have power beyond for the hoe). 🤔
